Dear Parents, I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. Although the spring semester is longer, it feels like it passes by even faster than the shorter fall semester. Now that I have said that, I want to make you aware of some of the important events occurring over the next couple of months. MCAA’s Beginning Drama production of “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” begins on Thursday, January 26 and runs through Sunday, January 29. Our annual “Showcase” talent show is on Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4. The Lanaea Festival, which is at Folsom College, is a great opportunity for our students to attend workshops and compete with students from other schools throughout California. Our students will leave for the Lenaea Festival on Friday, February 10. One last event for February will be a vocals performance known as “Musicality”. “Musicality” will be on Friday, February 24. On an academic note, I am happy to report that 84% of our students are on the Honor Roll for the fall 2016 semester. Such a high percentage is only achievable with the support from parents at home. Thank you for being involved in your student’s academic life. I want to thank all of our parent volunteers. Parents are deeply involved in PTSA, site council, drama productions’ set building, supervising at events, chaperoning, fundraising, and often take an important role in other important meetings. Thank you again, Tim Malone, Principal

Hello MCAA Students and Parents,

Happy New Year from the Counseling Office! It’s hard to believe it is second semester already…June is going to be here before we know it.

Second semester classes are well under way and all schedule change requests were finalized in December. Students will need to keep their current course schedule until the end of the year, but soon they will have an opportunity to start thinking about what they hope to take next year. The plan is to begin discussing course requests for next year’s classes in February or March. This will allow ample time to build a master schedule that will ideally accommodate the majority of students’ requests. More information will be sent home with your student when this process begins.

Want free money to attend college?? Seniors need to make sure they have completed their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than March 2nd, although sooner is better. As mentioned in a letter sent home to senior parents last fall, GPAs have been submitted for seniors so they can create an account on WebGrants 4 Students (www.mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov) to see if they qualified for a Cal Grant. Additionally, more and more scholarship opportunities are becoming available for seniors. Updates are e-mailed to seniors and added to the Scholarship Binder in the Counseling Office. If your student is not receiving e-mails or wants to check out the binder, have them stop by to see me. Also, remind your senior to check out the financial aid webpage for the colleges they hope to attend next year. Many institutions offer scholarships and now is the time to apply, even if they have not finalized the admissions process.

Yuba College QuickReg information will be coming soon. This is a program offered to seniors who plan to attend Yuba College in the fall. The first phase of QuickReg is the application process which will be completed during a Saturday workshop in Febru-ary. This workshop will provide seniors assistance with completing their Yuba College application. Additional phases will in-clude the placement exam and orientation/registration. To be eligible to participate in the QuickReg program students must com-plete all three phases. While this is all stuff students can do on their own, participation in this program gives students support with the enrollment process and also gives them priority registration which is a huge bonus! More information about this valuable program will be provided to seniors in the coming weeks.

Juniors who are planning to attend a 4-year university and are interested in getting a jump start on the SAT this spring should come by the Counseling Office for information about how to register. Upcoming test dates are March 11th, May 6th and June 3rd. Students who meet certain income guidelines can qualify for a fee waiver to take the SAT for free. See me for more information if you think you might qualify. Also, PSAT results will be delivered in the next few weeks to those students who took the test last fall.

And finally, our second Student of the Quarter was Julissa Gonzalez. She and eight other students from area high schools were recognized by the Marysville Exchange Club at a luncheon in December. Congratulations Julissa!!

If you have any questions or concerns about your child and his/her education, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Warmest Regards,

Christy Spade

S.H.A.R.E.S. Card Program FAQ for Shoppers

How do I signup?

Shoppers can sign up for the Shares program at http://www.escrip.com/shares/

Is the new program tied to my Save Smart account?

If you are a Lucky You or Save Smart rewards member, please make sure to use the same phone number or card number you shop with for that program. That way you can earn rewards and Shares donations at the same time.

Will my S.H.A.R.E.S. card continue to work?

No, beginning April 1, carrying a S.H.A.R.E.S. card will no longer be necessary, so the card will be obsolete. All you will need at checkout is to enter the phone number or your Save Smart/Lucky you card you used when you signed up for your eScrip account.
