INITIATED: DECEMBER 28, 2006DIED: JANUARY 17, 2016
As we are in full swing of the season the most important meetings of the year are this month. First is the February 4th meeting. It will start early (5:00 P.M.) nominations of next year’s officers. It is so very important because the future of the lodge depends on the people who run the lodge. The second meeting which will be at our standard time of 7:00, is the election of the officers. Plan to attend.
The quarterly meetings are the first week in February with the Rib Cook off and Bake Sale on Saturday the 6th of February. The following week is our Valentine’s Dinner Dance on Friday the 12th and a Poker Run to benefit a Winter Garden PER who is experiencing extreme medical bills. If you ride or want to wish him well, a group will stop at our lodge on or about noon. We will be serving Belly Busters. The Misfit Bowlers know him as Gator Dude.
As the year comes to a close at the end of March our membership numbers are nearly a gain this year as was last year. If you know someone who would make a good Elk sign them up. Speaking of that I am calling a special meeting to initiate several candidates who are ready to join our lodge. Hope you will attend the meeting to wELKome them to our lodge.
The Gitty Up Go Band that was here on the 16th of January will be reappearing in March. Watch your calendar. We are also having a Neil Diamond Show February 27th. Bill Hal, ER

The membership numbers for lodge year 2015-16 to date are as follows:Added = 53 Dropped = 59 Deaths = 14 Delinquents = 0 Absolute Dimits = 4 Currant Applications = 10 Current Total Membership = 688 Difference = -14
MEMBERSHIP:With 3 months to go in this lodge year, we continue to receive applications weekly. However, with dues notices out we are going to receive requests for absolute dimits. After the first week of dues receipts, requests for 4 absolute dimits have been received. At that pace, the -14 shown above is going to be hard to overcome. However, we are not going to give up and we will do all in our power to attain a gain again this year.
2016-17 MEMBERSHIP CARDS:Dues are coming in fast and are being processed as quickly as possible. Please remember that the new card keys work immediately. There is no reason to wait until April 1 to start using your new card key. Of course the old keys will work until April 1. ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION:This years dues notice urges all members to make their annual donations to ENF with their dues payments. In order to list the ENF line on the notice, a number had to be inserted in order for the line to print. I used the number of 1 cent, knowing that all our members knew that we were not asking for a donation of a penny. However, several members thought the penny was the request and donated that amount. Most of our members donate to ENF annually in an amount between $10 and $500. What we are asking is that you donate whatever you like, but do it with your dues payment. If this happens, we should have our required quota on April 1, and will be ready to submit our grant requests on that date, having a much better chance of being accepted for the maximum of $19,000 in grants to share with our community. Please support this plan if you feel led to help.
WHAT DOES YOUR MEMBERSHIPO DO:(REPRINTED FROM A SISTER LODGE’S BULLETIN FOR THE SECOND MONTH):Your membership allows us to be classified as a non-profit organization. Under the IRS code 501c (8), we are exempt from federal income taxes. This gives us the opportunity to provide you with all the great benefits you now enjoy. This also helps us with all of the charitable work we perform for the communities of Tavares, Eustis, Mount Dora, and Umatilla. Allowing non-members to frequent the lodge without being accompanied by a member in good standing will jeopardize all that we have accomplished. This includes a member trying to leave while their guest remains in the lodge. Please sign the guest book for any and all guests that you bring into the lodge.

State President’s MessageMy Fellow Elks,
This marks my final message to you for insertion in your respective monthlylodge bulletins. I wish to thank all those lodges across the state that chose toplace the monthly article in your bulletins. Hopefully this benefited your members. My goal was to enhance communication from your State President to themembership and I trust that has been accomplished to some degree.
I have repeatedly stated the sense of honor and privilege felt to have served inthis capacity. Julia and I will have many fond memories of the cordiality andfriendliness we have received while traveling and visiting in your lodges and districts.By virtue of our travels to every district, visits to 81 lodges, some of them morethan once, and attendance at over 40 events, we have become further abundantlyaware that Florida Elks are indeed the “BPOE” (BEST PEOPLE ON EARTH!).
Our FSEA continues to have many pressing issues to address. Decliningmembership is still prevalent even though it appears we have lessened the numberof non-renewals. Our donations and support for all the charitable activities inwhich the state association and local lodges are engaged is still strong, but wemust continue to work hard to sustain that effort. I am tremendously encouragedand pleased with the numerous programs that so many dedicated Florida Elksare promoting.
As we encounter inevitable problems, I am confident we in this organizationhave the talent and ability to overcome whatever may stress us at a given time. The FSEA did not establish a most charitable Children’s Therapy Service, awonderful Youth Camp, Veteran’s Services, Hope and Van Duren Scholarships, and other numerous programs to see it all cease to exist because of lack ofattention.
I will conclude with this thought. As the nation approached the end of WorldWar II in 1945, then President Franklin D. Roosevelt wrote in a speech never tobe delivered because of his sudden death these words: “The only limit to ourrealization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. Let us move forward withstrong and active faith.”
Thank you again for this privilege. It has been a wonderful journey for Julia andme.May God Richly Bless all you in our family of Florida Elks.Fraternally,James E. HurstFSEA President, 2010-2011
