Need a Valentine’s Date Ideas? Try the Symphony or Theatres

By Sara E. ButnerYou don’t have to be an expert on classical music to enjoy the symphony – in fact, both the Greensboro Symphony and Winston-Salem Symphony have planned concerts that’ll make a perfect date night for you and your Valentine. The Greensboro Symphony’s Tanger Outlets Pops Series will present Broadway, Our Way! on Saturday, Feb. 13. Classically trained vocalists, entertainers and recording artists Will and Anthony Nunziata bring fresh takes on timeless Broadway classics in a concert that soars, entertains and comes straight from the heart. The concert includes lush arrangements from West Side Story, South Pacific, Man of La Mancha, including songs like “The Impossible Dream,” “Make Someone Happy,” “Somewhere,” “Being Alive” and their signature mash-ups of songs like “Who Can I Turn To / What Kind of Fool Am I” and “This Nearly Was Mine / Some Enchanted Evening.” The concert takes place at 8 p.m. at Westover Church (505 Muirs Chapel Road, Greensboro). Tickets: $25-$50; purchase online at www.GreensboroSymphony.org. If rock ‘n roll is more your style, the Winston-Salem Symphony’s Plugged-In Pops Series welcomes Terry Mike Jeffrey for A Salute to Elvis!, also on Saturday, Feb. 13. Jeffrey, an Emmy Award-nominated singer, songwriter and instrumentalist, is known world-wide for his performances of Elvis Presley’s music. With the blessings of Graceland/EPE, and the original orchestra charts from the official Elvis archives, he and his band blend with full orchestras in presenting their salute to the King of Rock & Roll, (minus the impersonator element). The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Reynolds Auditorium (301 N. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem). Tickets: $20-$67; purchase online at www.wssymphony.org. Twin City Stage presents Neil Simon’s ProposalsA warm summer day in 1953 finds the Hines family – Burt, daughter Josie, and housekeeper Clemma – awaiting the arrival of Burt’s ex-wife for a visit to their cottage in the Poconos. When Josie’s old boyfriend and Clemma’s estranged husband show up at the same time, romantic entanglements ensue for one delightfully funny and poignant afternoon. An Opening Night Reception, hosted by NewBridge Bank and Raffaldini Vineyards, will include complimentary hors d’oeuvres and sweets by Savory St. Catering, wine and punch. The Saturday, Feb. 13, performance includes a pre-show Valentine’s Day Wine and Chocolates Reception, courtesy of Raffaldini Vineyards and Black Mountain Chocolates. Performances:

Valentine’s Day Special at The Mad PlatterBy Brian Watkins

The perfect Valentine’s Day plan is right in Greensboro at The Mad Platter. Treat your special someone to the annual Valentine’s Date Night special, including desserts and adult beverages to enjoy alongside the night’s main painting event. Whether you’d rather work your creative muscle on some pottery or put paint to canvas, each couple can create something memorable together. The Mad Platter is kicking this year’s Valentine’s Day off with a canvas special: $65 per couple covers supplies and instruction, as well as a traceable template. Stop by and do something unique this year for Valentine’s Day; you’ll both bring home something to remember. As an open studio for all ages, The Mad Platter has been a place for budding artists to create and grow over the years. Owner Meredith Moore says that’s her favorite part:

watching kids grow through their artwork. Styles develop over time, and friends can bond over shared experiences of expression. For 20 years The Mad Platter has been open to walk-ins. Patrons choose their pieces, their paints, and then get to it. With stamps, stencils, and other tools folks can put something personal and unique into every piece. After the piece is finished patrons can leave them at the studio to be glazed and fired. Simply pick them up later and bring them home to enjoy forever.Canvas painting is popular, too. For beginners there are a variety of designs that come with step-by-step instructions, but painters are free to create their own designs as well.Classes for canvas painting and pottery painting are available through

The Mad Platter’s website at: www.madplatterpottery.comBecause you can stop by and paint your own designs, but also be guided step by step if desired, The Mad Platter works for artists of all experience levels. If you’re new to painting, this can be a great way to get familiar with brush techniques andHosting a special event where you think your guests would enjoy painting? You can also take advantage of Mad Platter’s “Parties To Go” service — ideal for groups of 20 or more. Mad Platter brings all the supplies needed for everyone to create and have a great time. Parties To Go has been a good experience for after school groups, churches, daycare centers, and even girl scouts events.Meredith grew into owning The Mad Platter after graduated from UNCG a year after its opening. She’d been working there while in college, and used her passion to turn a job into a vision.

Bear Republic’s Big Bear Black StoutSpencer: Bear Republic opened in wine country, Sonoma County in 1995. In 1996 they were named “Small Brewing Company of the Year” and Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year” at the Great American Beer Festival. The beer that put them on the map is the Racer 5(India Pale Ale) but we sampled the Big Bear Black Stout. Weighing in at 8.1% ABV this is definitely a “Big” beer! Lots of caramel and roasty flavors finish this smooth Russian Imperial Stout with the addition of Centennial and Cascade hops. If you are looking for a deep black stout with a nice brown head then this is your winter companion. The old saying in wine country is that it takes a lot of beer to make good wine. Tim: We had this not only on The Less Desirables, but on our sister show, The Beer Dads. We found it to be a unique brew. It’s dark and creamy like a stout should be, but it also had a bitterness that was reminiscent of an IPA. This was not an overpowering trait as it sometimes can be. It was a welcome addition to the mix. The higher ABV was a bonus, as well. More bang for your buck, not only in alcohol content but all the flavor conditioning the brew gives your mouth. It’s better when you let it warm slightly, it brings that beautiful IPA/stout mix to the forefront. I rated it 4 stars the first time I had it (The Beer Dads) and it went up to 4.25 stars the second (The Less Desirables). It gets better as you go on. Highly recommended.

Stained Glass Playhouse marks Black History Month with The Piano LessonAlso opening Feb. 5 is August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Piano Lesson, which the Stained Glass Playhouse presents in honor of Black History Month. Set in Pittsburgh in 1936, the play focuses on the dispute between Boy Willie and his sister, Berniece, over a family heirloom piano. Boy Willie wants to sell the piano to purchase land down south, but it’s covered with incredible carvings detailing the family’s rise from slavery. The Piano Lesson is a moving story of family, history and survival in which the Charles family must come to terms with their legacy. Spirit Gum Theatre Co. returns with biting comedy SeminarRounding out a busy month for Winston-Salem theatre, Spirit Gum Theatre presents Theresa Rebeck’s provocative comedy, Seminar. Four aspiring young novelists sign up for private writing classes with Leonard, an international literary figure (played in the original Broadway production by the late Alan Rickman). Under his recklessly brilliant and unorthodox instruction, some thrive and others flounder, alliances are made and broken, sex is used as a weapon and hearts are unmoored. The wordplay is not the only thing that turns vicious as innocence collides with experience in this biting Broadway comedy. The production includes adult themes and language. Location: 1047 Northwest Blvd., Winston-Salem. Performances: Feb. 19 & 20, 26 & 27 at 8 p.m., and Feb. 21 & 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets: $10 at door.
