February 2016 Roosevelt Parents,
Roosevelt offers many opportunities for students in grade 3-6 to learn and grow beyond the classroom. We want
Rough riders to have a variety of experiences so they can discover their many talents.
LEGO CLUB
Students in 3rd and 4th grades can participate in our Lego Club. This club is run by Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Shep-
herd. These students work as young scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and creative writers to make fun mod-
els. The Lego Club had one group of 30 students last semester and has offered the club again to a new group of
30 students this semester. Two models they have worked on are an actual drumming monkey and a giant man
who could actually do sit-ups.
GAMING CLUB
The Gaming Club is offered to students in 3rd, 4th and 6th grades. This club has also had two sessions allowing
more students to sign-up and be involved. Students in this club play a variety of board games designed to help
them develop problem solving strategies, social skills, communication skills, and math skills. Games included in this
club are: Back Gammon, Stratego, Monopoly, Sorry... The list goes on. Some students have invited their class-
room teachers to attend Gaming Club and have challenged them to a match. Rumor is that teachers don't always
win! We have persistent, problem-solving students!
GIRL POWER CLUB
This club is designed for girls in grade 3-6 to inspire self-love, self esteem, and a desire for healthy living and a
higher education This club always has a short lesson, followed by different forms of exercise. This is a fun, interac-
tive club in which students experience jogging, yoga, line-dancing....
COOKING CLUB
Students in this club have the opportunity to meet once a week for 6 weeks to learn about following recipes, cook-
ing, and making healthy food choices. These students learn to make healthy snacks for themselves and their fami-
lies. This club has also been offered in two different sessions to students in grades 3-6.
ROUGH RIDER TUTORS
5th and 6th grade students assist primary grade teachers. They learn to apply for a job and then are trained by
their "employers" on different ways to work with children. Students are taught skills they will need in the workforce
such as; dependability and punctuality. Students meet occasionally before school to learn necessary skills needed
to be successful in their "jobs."
ROOSEVELT HARMONY
Students in grades 4-6 are invited to participate in Roosevelt Harmony, our after-school choir. Roosevelt Harmony
performs during school and at evening events. It also performs for the residents of Friendship Village and members
of Kiwanis. Roosevelt Harmony performs yearly with the Mesa Elementary Honor Choir.
STUDENT COUNCIL
Leadership and service is the focus of this organization. Students in this group are expected to be role models on
our campus. They must maintain high grades and model exemplary behavior. Student Council is a student govern-
ment. Students who qualify, run for office are voted in by their peers. These students help plan student events and
raise money for students activities.
B.U.G. (Bringing Up Grades) CLUB
This club is offered to students in grades 3-6. Students signing up for this club are dedicated to improve their report
card grades. They target a specific subject and set specific goals to help them be successful. Students can attend
B.U.G. Club during their recess in the computer lab or may attend on three different days after school. Students
work on homework first and then are able to practice skills on our iPads.
THANKS TO ALL OF THOSE WHO MAKE OUR CLUBS POSSIBLE!
It should be noted that we are able to offer the clubs because of the generous donations from our teachers, parents,
neighbors, and Friendship Village. These wonderful people donate their ECA funds which enable us to offer Extra
Curricular Activities. We thank them, and we thank the wonderful teachers who give of their time and energy to
make great things happen for kids.
Sincerely,
Darlene Shumway, Roosevelt Principal
