PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It seems hard to believe that a month has passed since Christmas and the New Year, and referring to the often used phrase “time flies when you’re having fun” certainly applies to the Club activities. After the last couple of months of 2014 and the warm weather, January has been very pleasant with the beautiful mild days and cool nights that allow one to get a good night’s rest. The re-greened countryside makes it very pleasurable for a drive around the local roads, and for those who like the wind in their hair they would have been in ‘seventh heaven’. What could be better? We just hope the rain has been widespread enough to provide some relief to those unfortunate farmers and people in outback NSW and Queensland who have not seen rain for two years or more.

During January, we welcome new members, Andy and Julie Young from Bathurst, Bruce and Patricia Lorimer from Orange and Garry Cooper and Barbara Cooke from Cargo have joined the Club, or in Garry and Barbara’s case, past members who have re-joined. To Andy and Julie, Bruce and Patrica ,and Garry and Barbara, a very warm welcome; we look to see your company on our activities where possible, and we hope you have a very enjoyable time with us.

2015 really commenced on New Years Day, when a group of members came together at Lake Canobolas for a recovery from New Year’s Eve, for an informal lunch and the usual socializing and relaxing under the shade of the beautiful shady trees overlooking the lake and the activities.

On Thursday, 8 January, a number of cars and members gathered alongside the highway at Kelso in Bathurst then travelled through Sunny Corner and

Portland for morning tea on the shores of Lake Wallace in Wallerawang. After the usual cuppa, sampling some of the ladies cooking, and more socializing, it was time to head off through Lithgow and take the trip up to the Hassens Walls Lookout. (Stewart, you did mention that you hoped the road has improved, you can be assured it hasn’t) The view from the lookout was spectacularly spectacular, overlooking the country to the West, the Great Western Highway, and the Megalong Valley. After time admiring the view, we moved on to our previously arranged lunch stop at Hartley. On arrival some went straight to the café, while others wandered around checking out the buildings, many heritage listed, in the village. Not too much later we noticed those who had gone to the Café driving away, apparently

being told that ‘it may be better if we sought our lunch elsewhere’. It was at this stage the group split up, some going into Lithgow, while others, as the return run went through Tarana, elected to have lunch there at the renown Tarana Hotel. I believe we all had a great day, and our sincere thanks to organiser Peter Harper. That 48 members and partners in near 30 cars were in attendance is a testimony to the success of the day.

On the following Sunday, 11 January, the Annual General Meeting was held at the Orange Ex-Services Club Country Club. The Minutes of the 2014 AGM were presented and accepted, and each of the 2014 Committee presented their reports. Two motions were presented, one for the 2015 membership fees to remain the same as 2014, the second to amend the Constitution to allow new members who join after September to be deemed financial for the following year, both motions being accepted. All positions were declared vacant, and Peter Single took over the chair as the Returning Officer for the election of the 2015 Committee. The Management Committee made a decision in 2014 that the Management Committee comprises only those people who hold various portfolios. Previous Committee members, with the exception of the Condition Registration Register were re-elected to these new positions. Richard Gardoll was then elected as the Conditional Registration Register. I extend my thanks to the members on my re-election as your President for 2015. I will certainly put all my effort in ensuring the Club continues as successfully as it has in the past, and I know that with your dedicated and hardworking Management Committee, I’m sure we can achieve that goal.

The new Auto Auction facility had their official opening in Orange on Saturday, 17 January, and asked local Shannons Insurance representative, Harold Upton, if he could arrange a display of 7 or 8 sporting type cars as an attraction for the opening. Those displaying cars were Mick Buckler, Jaguar XK 150, John Baker, Giocottolo, Paul Hingston, Triumph TR4, Peter Moras, Austin Healey Sprite “Bugeye”, David Smedley, Jaguar XJS, myself with Trish’s Mercedes SL230, and the

Southern Cross Street Cruisers also displayed a few of their cars. Thanks Harold, for the opportunity to display our cars.

On Australia Day 15 cars and 27 members and partners gathered in Carcoar for the annual Australia Day Re-Enactment. On arrival, in no time at all, the picnic tables and chairs were setup under the shade of the willow trees on the bank of the river, and morning tea to be partaken before it was off to see what could be found in the stalls in the town’s main street, or wander around and admire the other cars and motorcycles on display. It was then time to return to the cars and enjoy the company, discussions, and banter of the members in such a tranquil setting, under the cool shade of the willows beside the babbling riverside. By mid-afternoon it was time to head off, with the west bound members taking the longer route to the east to miss the muddy road works between Blayney and Millthorpe, and in Millthorpe. As is usual, a mandatory ice cream stop was required at the Two Fat Ladies Shop in Lucknow to bring a very pleasant day to a conclusion.

As we can see above, there were a number of activities during January; in February we also have some events, starting with the annual Bathurst Swap Meet, for those who like to snare a bargain, on Sunday, 1st, followed the next weekend by the Gnoo Blas Car and Bike Show on Saturday, 7. This is one of the prestige events of the year, and we have always had a very impressive display of cars, so much so that we have been awarded the Best Presented Club for the past few years. Let us see what we can do this year. As there are some vehicles on Conditional Registration that are rarely seen at events, the Committee have resolved that these vehicles attend at least one event each year, and the Gnoo Blas Day is the day they nominated. There are some great incentives to attend this year, Regalia man Stewart is presenting each member attending a Club umbrella, and one lucky member stands a chance of winning a $50.00 BP Fuel Voucher, courtesy of Shannons Insurance. The Gnoo Blas Club also have a district tour on the Sunday for those attending the Car and Bike Show. Meet in Clinton Street, Orange, outside Cook Park at 9.30 AM.

Future events are the mid-week outing to Burraga on Thursday, 12, and the Wellington Vintage Fair and Swap Meet on Sunday, 1 March.

That had better do for this report or the Editor will be imposing space limits on me, so until next month:

Smooth roads, and happy and safe motoring

Charles Stammers

SOMETHING TO TICKLE YOUR FANCY ---

An elderly man in Ballarat had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back paddock. It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees. One evening, the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, 'we're not coming out until you leave!' The old man frowned, 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked.' Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm here to feed the crocodile'

January 11th Sunday – ASCC Annual General Meeting. Orange Ex-Services Country Club.

Summary of Reports, Decisions and Elections from ASCC Annual General Meeting held 11th January 2015

(N.B. A full copy of the 2015 AGM Minutes is available from the Secretary on request)

C.Stammers welcomed all members present and considered 2014 to have been another successful year, with a stable membership and the Club in a sound financial position. He stated that it had been a great pleasure representing such an enthusiastic and happy group of members and partners.

C.Olson reported that the Management Committee met five times throughout 2014 with decisions made affecting you, our members, appearing in the club newsletter immediately following each meeting meaning that all members have been fully informed by these regular

summaries of all important decisions your committee makes. A.Mitchell tabled 40 copies of The Income and Expenditure Statement for 2014, showing the ASCC has no debts as at 31/12/14. This will

be submitted to the Dept. Fair Trading upon approval by members and committee after the next committee meeting.

P.Hingston reported that as of today (AGM) there are 160 financial members. This is down from the highest recorded number of 174 in 2013. There were thirty five members from 2013 who did not renew their membership in 2014. Seven of these resigned due to the sale of their car or work commitments. Naturally, these former members are welcome back to the club should their commitments or interests change. Twenty-nine new members joined during the year.

C.Stammers reminded members that we must consider it a privilege extended by the RMS (previously RTA) to approved motoring bodies to administer the Conditional Registration Scheme. It is a condition of the Clubs that they administer the scheme in accordance with the guidelines, and that it is not abused. It is his belief that those ASCC members holding Conditional Registration continue to act within the spirit of the scheme, in that their vehicles are very well presented and maintained, and comply with the authenticity requirements as required by the RMS. At this time we have nineteen members with their cars on Conditional Registration (Club Plates).

P.Moras noted another year has passed and hopefully either an electronic copy or a hard copy of the newsletter has managed to find its way to each member’s household. It has been his intention to try to get as much information as possible into the newsletter to keep members across what is coming up each month as well as what has taken place in the previous month. None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for the input from several members who send in reports and photos from events.

M.Buckler and P.Harper reported overnight weekend and mid-week trips have continued to be well attended by members this year. The 2015 Spring Tour is likely to be held earlier in the year (September) to avoid the hot conditions experienced in November.

S.Blowes reported Regalia sales for 2014 have been quiet during the year. A new stock of improved windscreen stickers, complete with backing making them easier to read, has been purchased. Members were reminded stock can be ordered as required.

P.Skulander reported that during 2014, short articles and technical information from the magazines held in the library were included in the ASCC’s monthly magazine. Some articles featured unique sports cars that are not so common and other articles compared the technical statistics and performance of two or more sporting type cars.

After some discussion on 2014 fees the following motion was put to the meeting.

The 2014 ASCC Management Committee proposes that the 2015 Annual Subscriptions for ASCC Membership remain the same as for 2014, ($40.00 for two members of the same family and $30.00 for an individual member.) Accepted on the motion of K.Kinninmont/S.Blowes CARRIED

Summary of Decisions from ASCC Management Committee Meeting held 11th January 2015

C.Stammers welcomed all members present, particularly those members attending for the first time.

C.Olson confirmed with members that now was the time to consolidate our planning for 2015 on our calendar. He reminded members of the three Management Committee dates scheduled for later in 2015

(12.4.15 in Bathurst, 12.7.15 in Orange and 18.10.15 in Bathurst)

A.Mitchell tabled the relevant documentation required for our club ready for submission to the Department of Fair Trading by our Public Officers.

P.Hingston reported an increase in members using the BSB method of payment to renew their memberships.

P.Moras reported that the next task he hopes to tackle will be to establish all members that get electronic versions have the ability to receive the newsletter in .pdf format (Adobe Reader) which will then mean that size of the email attachments will be reduced to half.

At this time there are 19 vehicles in the club on conditional registration as the majority of members’ cars are fully road registered.

Again this year the Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club display has been selected as a day that these members and their cars are requested to attend.

P.Harper reported that he was planning to continue to advise members three events in advance of upcoming mid-week events

M.Buckler reported that a Canberra visit was being planned for February/March 2015. More information will come in the future.

After some discussion the following motion was put In 2015 the ASCC again donate $100.00 to each of these clubs; The Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club, the Bathurst Light Car Club and the Grenfell Car Club. Accepted on motion of S.Blowes/J.Donohoe CARRIED

Dearne Witherden asked if support from members was needed for catering for the Gnoo Blas Classic event in February. Perhaps our lady members might like to supplement the BBQ with some salads. M.Buckler reported that he would again appreciate assistance, early in the morning, with the erection of the marquees.

Next Meeting of the ASCC Management Committee will be held at the Bathurst Light Car Club at 10.00am on Sunday, April 12th 2015. Chris Olson - Secretary

January 26th Monday - The annual Australia Day event at Carcoar (Report by Mick Buckler}

After a great deal of confusion regarding starting points and times, 15 cars and their occupants presented down by the riverbank in the picturesque 1850’s village of Carcoar. Our club again grabbed the prime position with the shade of a very old willow tree to protect us from the January sun. Tables and chairs were set up for a typical Australian morning tea of lamingtons and billy tea. That done, it was time for the shoppers to hit the street stalls and small shops. One lady member was spied returning with a nest of tables – lucky they have a larger than average sports car. Most other shoppers were content with bargains that fit within the confines of a shopping bag. The Carcoar Village committee always puts on a great day with a street parade, a bushranger re-enactment, live music and other attractions with the whole village seeming to take an active role in the festivities for which they should be congratulated. It was another most enjoyable day out, finished off with an ice cream on the way home at the Two Fat Ladies Cafe in Lucknow. Members attending the day: Gary Cooper and his partner Barbara, Dave and Dawn Smedley, Stewart and Kerrie Blowes, Chris and Judy Bromley, Michael and Shirley Buckler, Richard Gardoll, Bono and Sandra Marinovic, Larry Nunn and Rodney Bowd, Annette and Paul Hingston, Dearne and Doug Witherdin, Alan and Cherilyn Mitchell, Kevin and Annette Neville, Sharon Aiken, Roy and Sheila Riley, Charles Stammers.

COMPARING THE SUPRA, RX7 AND 300ZX TURBO – Car Australia, May, 1986 From an outsiders point of view, in 1986, it would certainly seem that Porsche is the target for a number of Japanese manufacturers. In 1986 building prestige performance coupes, particularly when considered in the light of the bulky price increases they have had to wear in Australia. Although Porsche maintains its distance comfortably enough, especially after the most recent price rise which means you have to fork out $73k, to get into the basic model. But the fact of the matter is that the Japanese have been now well and truly forced into the high numbers game at the performance end of the market. Driving all three cars merely serves as reinforcement to the visual perceptions, although hardly anything separates these three cars in performance. The RX7 is a true sports car. It does all the right things, with the degree of agility, intimacy and quality as the sort of car you strap on Sunday morning. The Nissan with its turbo charged V6 engine delivers 155kW with impressive fluidity, however it is a generation behind the Supra and the RX7. The detachable roof makes it an enjoyable summer cruiser. The Toyota Supra, is more of a grand tourer. It’s very fast and has superb roadholding. Its forte is hustling through a series of wide corners at 160kph, rather than going on a steep climb through tight corners in lower gears. In brief the Supra is one hell of a car and just nudges out the RX7.

With the start of the new 2015 membership year we have some members to welcome back to the club. These are;

Gary Cooper and Barbara Cooke, Cargo, in their new Hyundai Veloster Turbo Coupe

Andy and Julie Young, Bathurst, Triumph TR6 and Fiat 500 Bambino,

Bruce Lorimer, Orange, BMW Z4 We have enjoyed their company in the past and will look forward to more antics from “Highnoon” Gary. His last effort was to tempt Mick Buckler to “trade” his XK150 for a Vauxhall Viva and a few bob to a “secret” buyer! We also welcome our new member, Bruce, and look forward to seeing him and his wife Patricia, in their BMW Z4 on an outing soon. With the commencement of our membership year in January, fees are now due. We have already reached over the 80 mark. As there is not yet a lot to report so early in the membership year, I thought it might of interest to those of us who are analysis oriented, to look at the diverse locations of our member base. Naturally heading the list is Orange and environs (including Millthorpe) with 66 members. Then follows Bathurst and environs with 31. Next are Sydney Suburbs and Dubbo with 10 apiece. Act, Blayney and Lithgow have 6, 5 and 4 respectively. We have Canowindra, Carcoar and Cowra with 3 each. All with two are Grenfell, Manildra, Mudgee, Oberon, Rylstone, Trangie and Wentworrth Falls. And last but not least with one each are Bowral, Katoomba, Molong, Narromine and Wellington. In all 160 members for the 2014 year. If those members in locations with small numbers are feeling a little lonely, you might like to grab any owners of sports or sporting cars that frequent your location and tell them about our great club and its outings. Then you will have some company in your trips to catch up with the rest of us on our runs until we can organise an outing to your areas. Due to the strong financial position of the club, the fees for 2015 have been retained at $30 for single member and $40 for two members in the one family. There is a membership renewal form attached Please only complete a renewal form if there are changes to your details recorded with the club, change of email address. This will assist maintaining consistent club records for contact with you and renewing our membership to the Council of Motor Clubs. Please note on then form the Club’s Bank Account details. This will enable renewal via Direct Debit. Please use your surname and your membership number as reference, as there are several members with the same surname in the club.
