The Friendship Note Newsletter of the Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild, Inc. Sarasota, Florida
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
February is traditionally associated with
love, hearts and candies with sweet
sayings. But I wonder…
Last month Bonnie Hunter shared her
scrap quilts, many pieced with fabric
associated with memories from her life.
This made me think of a quilt my mother
gave me that had been made by her
grandmother. It was pieced from old
dresses, table cloths, shirts and blouses
and every other fabric source around the
house. I barely appreciated this quilt
because after all there was all this new
beautiful fabric available with which to
create fresh looking, bright colored quilts.
But my daughter Kelly fell in love with
the quilt and the history. She now owns it
and the last trip I made to Dallas I saw her
daughter Kyndall lovingly wrapped in the
quilt. When I think about it, what an
amazing connection Kyndall has to her
Great Great Great Grandmother. She can
touch the fabrics and the hand stitching
and imagine the life of a woman whose
stern black and white picture is all we
would know about her without the quilt.
So I know, making quilts gives us the
opportunity to pass on our love, share our
hearts and even add sweet sayings to those
who will follow us. Hurrah for February!

Education Notes
Elva Farrell
What a remarkable evening we had with Bon-
nie Hunter at our last meeting. I’m sure everyone
at the meeting gained inspiration and is back
home cutting up their stash into little strips and
squares for future quilts. Thanks to all who
helped coordinate her visit. Next month, we look
forward to Robbi Eklow’s classes and program
at the guild meeting.
Ever wonder how we select our programs,
classes and speakers? Final decisions are made
by the Education Committee with input from all
of our members. We need a few more members
on the committee. If you’ve ever thought you’d
like to be involved in discussing the types of
programs the guild offers and having input into
the choices, now’s your chance. Email me at
[email protected]. We will be meeting
soon to start selecting presenters for 2015 and
beyond.
Committee members have the opportunity to
get to know the speakers even better, as we are
also charged with helping with the arrangements
for each speaker including airport pick-up, trans-
porting to and from class, hosting for an evening
meal or even hosting the speaker in your home.
If serving on the committee won’t fit your
schedule but you have a suggestion for a possi-
ble program/speaker, let me know. All sugges-
tions will be researched and considered by the
committee.
I look forward to the year ahead and working
with all of our membership to make this another
banner year for programs and education. Please
contact me with any questions or suggestions.
WOW!
Cass Bowen
You can imagine my surprise when I was
presented with a huge basket of fat quarters from
the members of the Guild. You (the members)
are just the best! It was my pleasure to serve as
your President, and I am happy to support Karen
Clark, your new President. She will do a terrific
job. Thank you so much for your generous gift.
I see several new projects in my future with all
that fabric.

Go to the website and check the attendance roster for the class you signed up for. If you can’t re-
member which class it was, keep checking attendance rosters until you find your name. At the bottom
of your class will be a list of names on the waiting list. Start with the first name and work your way
through the list to find a replacement. If the person’s phone number is not listed look on your roster
before emailing Faith for their phone number. Work out an arrangement with the person to exchange
payment for the class. The guild does not get involved in the financial transaction. After finding a re-
placement, notify Faith Reynolds [email protected] and Gayle Hages 941-504-3488 letting them

Quilts In Paradise - March 6 & 7, 2015
Show Chairs Update
Ann Greene, Lynn Purple, Jamie Sculley
We’re working on the show. We have our
judge - Linda McCuean. We have our Chal-
lenge Fabric (see Pinky Stewart or Pam Morris).
We have our Vendor Chairmen, Shirley McMath
and Jan Secor. They are working hard at getting
us some good vendors.
We are in need of someone for Door Prizes
(we already have several donated); we need
someone to co-ordinate buses. And, of course,
we are going to need lots of volunteers over the
next year to make sure that this Quilt Show is just
as spectacular and successful as in all the previ-
ous years.
Mini-Quilt Silent Auction
Cass Bowen
Get those sewing machines out and whip up a
small quilt for the Mini-Quilt Auction. Our goal
is to have at least 100 quilts - 50 for each day of
the show. Quilts can be appliqued, pieced, or
paper-pieced. Total perimeter should not exceed
80 inches. They can be square, rectangular or
round - you decide. There is no minimum pe-
rimeter measurement. The quilt should have a
sleeve or some type of hanger on the back.
Please label your quilt. Hopefully we will sell
them all, but if not, they will be returned to the
maker. Since we are going a different route for
the Boutique this year, this will be your chance
to make something cute for the quilt show.
Please turn them in to me at any of the future
meetings and call me with any questions you
might have.
Gift Basket Boutique
Karla Lynch and Mary Nissen
On Monday night we announced the new con-
cept for the boutique for the 2015 Quilt Show
and showed two sample gift baskets. What we
(guild members) are going to do is provide items
to make gift baskets that will be raffled at the
quilt show. It’s an idea that’s been done at other
guilds and has been quite successful.
Here’s how it works. We have a list of 30-40
themed gift basket ideas. We’d like you, your
cottage group, or a group of you to pick a theme
and buy the items to go in the basket. You don’t
have to buy the basket. We have those already.
We want the items to be new or nearly new and
the value to be approx. $100. We want people to
desire the baskets so much that they’ll buy lots of
raffle tickets. We think we’ll be selling 30 tick-
ets for $5.00. If you need ideas talk to us. We’ll
have a Boutique table at every meeting. If you’d
like a copy of the list, send me an email and I’ll
send one to you.
These baskets have been chosen already:
BBQ
Civil War Reproductions
Pink Ribbon
Food Theme
Hand Dye Basket
Thread Basket
Beach Theme
Art Quilting Theme
Dog Basket
American Girl Basket
Liquor Basket
Redwork & Tea Basket
Easter Basket
Which basket would you like to do?

2015 Quilt Show Donor Quilt
Rose Ryan
I was very disappointed in the lack of participation in the last donor quilt workshop. My goal was to
have this a guild project done by many hands. On January 25 we had only 3 people show up and work.
There were a couple of others who took blocks home to work on. The 3 of us at the workshop had fun
and were able to put the arcs on all the finished blocks and begin the process of removing the paper.
The next workshop is Saturday, February 8th at 9 a.m.,
Five Lakes Clubhouse, 3475 51 Ave. Cir. W., Bradenton. We will be putting the sashing on the blocks and the stars in
the corners of the sashing. Please join the group and help with
this project. Bring your machine and the usual sewing tools as
well as a cutting board. Hand sewing needles for the applique
stars as well. If you do not applique, come anyway. There
will be straight sewing and pressing that needs to be done.
Bring your lunch or there are several places to order from
in the area. Bring your coffee or tea and breakfast treats will
be provided. Hope to see you on the 8th.
Quilts In Paradise - March 6 & 7, 2015
Just Another Day in Paradise Challenge Pam Morris and Pinky Stewart
ALL of the challenge squares have been bought. Those of you who are inspired and ready to jump
in, go to it. We will accept your challenge as soon as you have it ready and will hold it for you until the
time to register it, if you would like. We will get the proper papers for registration to you when they
are ready. We would hate for you to get your challenge done and have it ‘hide’ under other projects.
“Hmmmm...now what do I see in this fabric?”
Rules:
1. The Challenge Quilts to be accepted will be no larger or smaller than 24 inches on a side.
2. The theme for the Challenge Quilt will be “Just Another Day in Paradise”.
3. Each participant will pay $3 for a fat quarter of the challenge fabric.
4. All quilts must have a gusseted hanging sleeve and be labeled.
5. All quilts must be turned in during the quilt registering process.
6. The Challenge quilts will be judged by the professional who is judging the whole show.
Some of the proposed categories may be: Best Depiction of Theme, Best Use of Fabric, Most Origi-
nal, Most Humorous, Popular Vote and Judges Choice.
Any questions can be directed to Pam Morris [email protected] or Pinky Stewart
[email protected] and we will respond as soon as we have an answer.

KiDZQuilts
Jo Wieczynski, Coordinator
Thirty-two KiDZQuilters came to the Fruitville Library on January 14th when 65
quilts were donated to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. At the January FKQG meeting
Ginny Klotzbach at the KiDZQuilts table received fabric from Joan Landrey and Debi
Webb as well as seven quilts from Debbie Goldshot and one quilt from Cass Bowen
and friends.
KiDZQuilts meets on February 11th from 12:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Fruitville
Library. Our guidelines and calendar are available on the FKGQ website. For addi-
tional information, please contact Jo Wieczynski at [email protected].
Road Trip
Lynn Purple
March 29 - Mark Your Calendars
We are going to have a Road Trip to Deland
with stops at quilt shops along the way. We al-
ways stop some place good for lunch and we al-
ways, always have a great deal of fun.
If enough members are interested - new or
old - we will hire a bus rather than car pool. I
don’t have a firm price as of yet, but it will be
around $35 per person. This is not a money-
making deal for the Guild. We will take the total
cost of hiring the bus plus 18% gratuity for the
driver and divide it equally among the members
and friends that go on the trip. When the itiner-
ary is solid, we’ll let you know in an email. If
you know of good quilt shops in the Orlando/
Deland area, let me know. I always welcome
suggestions: [email protected]

In Memory of Jean C. Pearson
Nov. 5, 1929 - Jan. 8, 2014 Cass Bowen
I recently learned of the passing of one our
members, Jean Pearson. Jean passed away after
a short illness. She was originally from Boston,
MA. Jean had been a member of the guild since
1993. She had not attended the monthly meet-
ings for a few years because of her health, but
always participated in the quilt show. She won
her first blue ribbon for her entry in the 2013
Quilt Show. Her son, Per, told me that it was
Jean’s desire to donate her fabric stash to the
Guild. A true quilter for sure, she knew we
would make good use of her “treasures”. It is
certainly appreciated. We will miss you, Jean.
On a similar note, we received four cartons of
quilting books from the husband of another of
our members that passed away last summer, Patti
Wadsworth. The books will be a wonderful ad-
dition to our library. We appreciate this thought-
ful gesture from her husband.

Dog and Cat Bed Update
Jane Sanks
Thank you for all of your contributions to this
project. Before the Quilt Guild’s involvement, I
was unable to find enough stuffing to meet the
requests for beds. Now, I am able to supply eve-
ry organization that makes a request with a bed
for each animal they are sheltering.
In 2012, I was able to complete 229 beds. In
2013, that number rose to 298. I am off to a
good start for 2014 in trying to complete one bed
a day.
Due to feedback from the shelter, I plan to
eliminate upholstery scraps. The batting and
fabric scraps are wonderful and I appreciate your
contributions more that I can say.
One lucky result for me is that I thoroughly
enjoy the Guild meetings. I have learned quite a
few things about quilting and met some very tal-
ented quilters. I have been inspired to begin
quilting again; if I
can only find the
time.

New Member Sew-In
Lynn Purple
At the January Sew-In, we had twelve gals
sewing. Some were working on hand pieces,
some brought their sewing machines and Carol
Brown, who had no quilting projects, brought her
knitting for cancer patients. You see, it doesn’t
just have to be for new members. Seasoned mem-
bers of our Guild are encouraged to come. It is
really a lovely way to spend the day and a great
way to get to know other members.
Well, it was so much fun we’re doing it again!
The FKQG Sew-In will be on February 10 at the
Sarasota Senior Center. The time is from 11:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can bring your lunch or buy
the delicious sandwiches that the center has ca-
tered. There will be an ironing station and a cut-
ting station (bring your own rotary cutter).

We will also talk about the 2015 Quilt Show
Boutique and what baskets the new members
group wants to provide. So, come with your ideas.
The Boutique Charimen would like the contents to
be worth at least $100 at retail, new items, quality
fabric and books that are good-as-new.
Our space is limited, so I need to know who is
coming on February 10.
Dinner at Der Dutchman
Before the January meeting, 25 members -
new and seasoned - met for dinner. I can’t ex-
plain how much fun this is. Everyone is so de-
lightful and the conversation is so lively. Do
yourself a favor and put dinner at Der Dutchman,
5:00 p.m. the night of the guild meeting, on your
calendar. The only caveat, is that I need to know
if you’re coming by 3:00 p.m. that day so that the
restaurant can be ready for us.

Anna Vaughn
Hello all!
I want to introduce myself as your new Li-
brarian. My name is Anna Vaughn and I am ex-
cited to take on this challenge although I have
big shoes to fill after Trish. I love quilting, re-
search and reading, so this is going to be so
much fun for me. I want to ask you all for help.
If you have any suggestions for books to add to
the library, please do not hesitate to come to me.
I love suggestions and love to see others get as
excited about books as I do.
At the last meeting, we were graciously given
four boxes of books in perfect shape from Rick
Wadsworth, the husband of the late Patti
Wadsworth (a dear friend of Karen Clark and
member of our guild). These books were so well
taken care of. I am honored to add these books
to our Library. I know some of these will be
doubles of what we already have, so some will
be on sale in the bookstore.
This brings me to my next topic, the BOGO
sale was such a success last month that we will
be doing it again in February!
So in closing, I am very excited for this new
adventure and hope you can stop by the Library
table and say hi!
