    race & Peace to you,

uring Lent each year, which begins Wednes-ay, February 13th, Christians give up something

an act of sacrifice and spiritual discipline. Of-n it is something like chocolate, knowing thatter Easter Sunday they can once again enjoyhat they have given up. This year, how about

ying to give up something spiritually that youould be better off not doing? What would itean if we sought God's help to focus on elimi-ating one habit or attitude that is destructive?magine if we gave up envy, jealousy, self-pity,pathy, procrastination, gossip, resentment, oregative thinking, how much better life woulde.

was reminded of this type of living at a recentession meeting. David MacKay reminiscedbout the attitude of former member Lucy To-as. Lucy lives by an attitude of gratitude. Sheves giving thanks in all situations.

What would happen to our faith during thisenten season if we gave up negative attitudend worked on a positive one? David gave us at of tips for a positive attitude. Here are some

f those tips: Dont seek happiness. Instead decide to

live with passion and purpose and happi-ness will find you.

Dont chase success. Instead decide tomake a difference and success will find

you. Focus on Get to vs Have to. Each day

focus on what you get to do, not what you

have to do. Life is a gift not an obligation. Implement the No Complaining Rule. Re-

member that complaining is like vomiting.Afterwards you feel better but everyonearound you feels sick.

his Lenten season give up the negative andke on the positive. Live differently and expand

    he Kingdom of God.

In February Mary Beth Neely will continue her interesting and informative examination of two of the worldsmajor religions, Islam and Judaism. A retired teacher, Mary Beth knows how to present her material in an en-thusiastic manner that encourages class participation. The classes address our own misgivings and misunder-

standings about each religion, and focus on the issues that tend to bring conflict.

Classes are held at 9:15am every Sunday morning in the Session Room where coffee is available. Come join usand learn things about Islam and Judaism that you never knew before. You might also learn that some of yourperceptions about Islam and Judaism might not be as accurate as you thought.

    SESSION

    WORSHIP

    Lent Begins!

Believe it or not the season of Lent begins February 13 th with our Ash Wednesday service at 7:00pm. This yearour Lenten theme during worship will be The Roads We Travel as we journey to the cross of Easter. Each Sundaywe will discuss the paths we take in life and faith, as well as the obstacles we may encounter.

You are also invited to join us at 5:30pm each Wednesday during Lent for our annual Lenten Dinners and Study. We be discussing the 24 hours that changed the world. No single event in human history has received more at-tention than the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. We will discuss the last twenty-four hours of Je-sus' life. Our discussion will help us experience and understand the significance of Jesus' suffering and death in a

way we may have never done before. Whether you are a long-time Christian or simply curious about the story ofChrist's crucifixion, you are invited to join us in retracing the last 24 hours of Jesus' life.

Our dinners this year will be catered by outside organizations so we will need to get an accurate count on howmany will attend dinner. To make this possible the Missions Ministry will take reservations following worshipeach week. Remember, dinner begins at 5:30 and our study begins at 6:00.

We hope you will join us for these challenging Wednesday evenings and Sunday services during Lent as we traveldown the roads of faith. If you have questions or want to reserve dinner tickets please call Carole DeLucian orthe church office.

Something to Think AboutMeditation Mark 10:35-44

Because Jesus was not teaching religion; because what he was teaching challenged all levels of social authority

both political and religious; because imperial authority had subjected human life to subsistence and survivor levels, while that elite lived extravagantly; and because Jesus spoke of God as Abba/Father, the God who cares andprovides for all human life, contrary to the emperor of Rome or any client-king, Jesus of Nazareth was silencedby crucifixion as a warning to the Jewish population not to attempt to replace the worship of and submissionto Caesar with the worship of God.

Did the disciples understand Jesus? There is no question that the writer ofMark depicts the disciples as obtuse and unsupportive of Jesus. That these two disciples (James and John, the Sons of Zebedee) wanted to be

first, when they have already been told that in Gods domain the last are first (Mark 9:35), underscores just howuncomprehending they were, how unprepared for what was to come (Funk, Hoover and Jesus Seminar 1993The Five Gospels 95). Lets rename being first: it was an attempt to grab power! (Funk et al. op cit. 94).

Indeed! Mark 9:35 is quite clear: If anyone wants to be number one that person has to be last of all and ser-vant of all. This probably goes back to Jesus; Mark, however, has recast the form of what Jesus said to deal withthe power struggle that ensued in the early Christian community. To put it differently: Power-relationships hadbeen so ingrained in the disciples that they simply could not and perhaps just did not want to understand; theyheard the words but the meaning zipped right over their heads. To be last, to be a servant of all? Being a servant is your power, your authority?

There is a second concern besides the power grab by people to control the direction of the church in the firstcentury after Jesus crucifixion: people wanted emotional security in a time of socio-political and religious turmoil. They expected the leadership of the Church / congregation to come up with a belief-system along withhow-tos to deal with reality as they experienced it and as they were accustomed to it. This means that theywanted beliefs that were consistent with what they believed and hoped for and in; they wanted practicebehavior that would allow them the least amount of friction with the powers that be, i.e. socio-economic, religious, and political powers of Imperial Rome. And, they preferred miracle, mystery, and authority to having towork out/through their understanding and/or to project how they were going to live their lives over againstthe Imperial powers that lorded it over them. Keep it simple I have to make a living!- Just tell me what tobelieve!

What Jesus of Nazareth had done, what he called out to people to do, what that all meant is pretty much whaMoses and the prophets had already said and experienced: there was either outright rejection of both the

teacher and the message, and/or an accommodation of what had been said so that it fit comfortably within thereligious emotions and aspirations of a temple/church goer. When an attempt is made to recover the meaning owhat a prophet said, people walk away with: How will that help me cope in my daily life? Thats too muchresponsibility for me to carry too much to think about too much like work Nothing has ever beenmore insupportable for a man and a human society than freedom(F.M. Dostoevsky 1881 The Brothers Karamazov, The Grand Inquisitor, 130).

So, we use the freedom we have gained how? For a power grab in the church to make things go my wayTo rely on other people (my leaders) to tell me what to think and do? To run away from facing what were involved in, as escape from freedom?

WORSHIP (continued)WORSHIP (continued)WORSHIP (continued)WORSHIP (continued)I have chosen to be a follower of Jesus of Nazareth. His message is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago. And, in spite of the teachings of the Church, or perhaps because of them (!), we are as human beings still at thesame place:

They will tremble impotently at our wrath; their minds will go fearful, they will be quick to shed tears like women and children their life (is)

like a childs game! (Dostoevsky op. cit. 134).Weve not been paying attention and weve gotten too comfortable. This is my beloved Son Listen to him! Its time.Shalom,Tom
