Worthy Officers and Brothers All:

Happy St. Valentine's Day!  Yes, for those who have forgotten, this day of cupids, hearts and candy is real ly the feast day of a saint.  Valentine, a Catholic priest and martyr, died on February 14, 269.  He was imprisoned by Claudius II for marrying Christian couples.  When he tried to convert the Emperor to Christianity, he was stoned, beaten and, finally, beheaded.  The feast of St. Valentine was first established in 496 by Pope Gelasius I and was officially removed from the Catholic calendar of saints in 1969.

February is a very busy month for the Knights.  One of our largest events, the "Tootsie Roll" Drive, is this Saturday.  Hopefully, many of you will be joining us as we raise money for many needy charities that reach out to those in our community who live with disabilities.  It only takes a few hours so don't be shy!  Come out, shake a can and help some people out.

Two members of our First Degree Ceremonial Team will be joining members of the Corpus Christi council's team to conduct an Exemplification at Resurrection council in Winter Garden.  This will be the first time that two councils from our district have joined to produce one Exemplification.  Our council will also be sending a number of candidates to make their First Degree.  If you want to come out and watch this monumental event, come on out on February 6th!

On Wednesday, I will celebrate the "10th anniversary of my 29th birthday".  Time really does fly by, but it also gives me a great opportunity to thank our Lord, Jesus Christ, for his many blessings in my life.  Among those, I count all of you.  Being a Knight is very special and I look forward to many more years of serving with you to make other people's lives a little better.

I would also like to employ the assistance of my Brother Knights.  Tomorrow, and all of the Mondays in February, Pizza Hut of Clermont is donating 20% of all profits raised to the Clermont Middle School Band.  To help us out, all you need is a form.  You can order at any time during the day or night and you can do delivery, carry out or dine-in.  The form can be obtained here in the newsletter or on the front page of the new Council web site.  All proceeds raised will go towards helping to send the Clermont Middle School "Flight of Sound" Jazz Ensemble to a national competition in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

I hope you all have a terrific month and look forward to seeing you out there next Saturday making money ... one Tootsie Roll at a time!

Vivat Jesus!

Brothers I would like to thank each and everyone of you for the continued support which you give me. I would like to apologize for this belated recognition but g re a t l y a p p re c i a t e d a n d deserved. I with the assistance of m y w o n d e r f u l w i f e Ja c k i e coordinated the “Keep Christ in Christmas” magnet fund raiser and the “Kids Christmas Party” and due to her along with those involved were both of great success.

The kids Christmas party was a new adventure but, with the initial sharing of information from last years coordinators, Bill and Kelly Nowack, which was greatly appreciated the baton was passed without dropping it. Larry and Diane Barber along with there sons Nico and the Cookie Chef Sir John (both Squires) the preparation went with only a couple of broken or b i t t e n c o o k i e s . Lu c a a n d Concetta (his Mom) lead the C h i l d re n’s Pi z z a R i a w h i c h t u r n e d o u t t o b e f u n a n d interactive with the children. Lets not forget the great support and back bone of the party from Gonzo and his wife Cindy. I want to give special thanks and tell you all how wonderful our squires were. Not just in there continued assistance which they do with out hesitation. They stepped up to the plate for the scavenger hunt which we strongly attempted to present the meaning of “Christ

In C h r i s t m a s ” i n w a y s t h e children would understand.

I think all involved felt the meaning and the Squires showed the meaning. Special thanks Sir John, Nico, Christopher, Joseph, Michael, Robby, Michael , Will, Javier, Ishmo and not to forget Chief Squire Eric Palmer. We also can’t forget you all know who that’s right our very own “ Santa Clause”. again thanks to al l involved and if I forgot anyone please view the pictures that were put on our Web page . These were taken by and I would like to thank William Overbay for his outstanding photography of the entire event that let us not just instill the meaning of Christmas to our children but were able to s e n d e a c h p a re n t a d i s c o f m e m o r i e s t o s h a re a n d remember this wonderful event for years to come. Please let me also thank

you all for another “ Christ in C h r i s t m a s ” Ma g n e t S a l e success. Special thanks to Ste ve Cr uz, for assisting during the Saturday evening m a s s e s . T h a n k s f o r t h e assistance from all the other knights involved. We did not sell out but we sold more and made more then last years but, we sure came close to another sale out. Next year will be bigger and better and a different magnet will arise but, we do have some spares of the past magnets if any or all are interested a sell out could still happen.

Thank you all from both Jackie and I , God Bless.

Some Things To PonderFrom Your Fraternal Benefits Advisor

Different life stages, changing needs

You may have a long-range expense for which you are saving, such as college for your children. You may be concerned about a comfortable, worry-free retirement. You may want to protect your ability to earn a living. You may wonder if needing costly long-term care will deplete your hard-earned assets. You want to have something to leave for your wife, children or grandchildren.

At some point you may have had all of these needs on your mind. Over time, these thoughts make way for others as your needs evolve, your finances change and you get older. What is important to you at age 20, may not be at 30, or 45, or 65. What is the best way to be prepared for these changes before they happen?

One of the easiest ways to be financially ready for changes that come with different life stages is to meet annually with your professional Knights of Columbus agent, and address the needs that his analysis uncovers. This can help you be ready to face the financial challenges and issues on the road ahead.

During that annual visit, I’ll take the time to review your needs, goals and budget. I’ll update all beneficiaries on your policies and be sure your coverage meets your needs. I’ll recommend a program of life insurance, long-term care, disability income insurance and guaranteed retirement products that will help you rest easy at night.

Whatever your needs, whatever your concerns, whatever your stage in life, I can help.

Contact me today to learn more.

Dear Sir Knights

This month, Feb. 4th,  we will have an Exemplification in Bonita Springs Fl and two new Sir Knights will join our Assembly. Please welcome Elliott Ogden and Michael Ogden, Father and Son, when you see them at our next meeting. We are working on an Exemplification for May 5th in Orlando so if you have a third degree buddy who is thinking of the 4th or sitting on the fence or just now showing interest then talk to him about May. Iʼll have more at the Feb. Council meeting or you can email or call me. We had a great showing of the Color Corps at the 50 th Anniversary  Masses of our parish. I want to thank all who came out in Regalia and put on a great show of support. The Bishop was here and had a great time presiding at the Mass and then the wall breaking at our soon to be Youth Center. I hope you had an opportunity to meet the Bishop at the Church, reception or the Youth Center.  The Bishop is quite friendly and I believe surprised some parishioners when they came in the front door and found him standing there saying hello and shaking hands. I received a number of comments from parishioners about the professional way we add to the ceremonies at the church. Thanks again. Color Corps will be needed again for Confirmation in Feb. so look for a call from the Commander.

The Jan issue of the Knightline  had two articles that caught my interest and I thought should be brought out again. First in Nov. 2011 the Knights of Columbus held its first Patriotic Degree Exemplification in Poland. This event coincided with Polandʼs Independence Day and 24 candidates became new Sir Knights. Our Supreme Master Dennis Stoddard, a past Fl. Master, was in attendance and the Mass was said by Cardinal Franiszek Macharski of Krakow. Wow ! What an event and a great tribute to the beliefs and values of our Order.  What better way to show solidarity with our brothers than wearing your pin and shirt to church. Secondly, our Supreme Knight visited Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican and gave him a gift of $1.6 million, representing this yearʼs earnings from the Orderʼs Vicarius Christi Fund. Over the yearʼs this fund has provide some $49.6 million for the popeʼs personal charities and causes.  That humble group of men who joined with Fr. McGivney in 1882 in New Haven CT surely founded a great and benevolent society.  Pete Stauder Faithful Navigator

Catholics That Helped Shaped America

Colonel Stephen Moylan2nd Quartermaster GeneralJune 1776-September 1776

Stephen Moylan was born of wealthy parents in Cork, Ireland, in 1737, and, though he had been in the United States only seven years at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, he became a vigorous advocate of independence and established a reputation for intense loyalty to the American cause. His family was Catholic and he had been sent to school in Paris, where he received a good education. He engaged in the shipping business, first in Lisbon and then in Philadelphia, where he moved in 1768. Although still in his thirties, he had gained considerable wealth and social prestige before the outbreak of the war. His jovial nature won him many friends, and when the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, comprised mainly of prosperous merchants. was founded in Philadelphia in 1771 he was elected the first president.

John Dickinson, prominent Philadelphia lawyer, recommended him to Washington as a zealous patriot. Moylan joined the Army at Cambridge and Washington appointed him Muster-Master General in August 1775. In January 1776 Moylan became one of the leaders in the movement for complete independence of the colonies. His ambition was to become ambassador to Spain, but failing to get the appointment he remained in the Army. In March of that year he was named secretary to Washington. Three months later, on June 7th, Congress appointed him Quartermaster General to succeed Thomas Mifflin.

Moylan was unfortunate in that his appointment came on the eve of the disastrous New York campaign in the summer of 1776. Washington made the tactical error of attempting to hold Long Island against a much larger British army and strong fleet. Moylan was instructed to try to block the progress of the English fleet up the Hudson, but his frantic efforts in anchoring obstacles in the river proved fruitless. In the meantime, he had been transporting supplies to the troops by means of the Hudson and East rivers. When the British gained control of these waterways, overran the island, and defeated the Americans in a battle at Brooklyn, the Continental Army was forced into a hasty retreat across the East River, leaving behind many wagons containing most of its baggage and supplies. Not only was the morale of the soldiers shattered by the retreat but their distress was increased by the interruption to the flow of supplies, and in their irritation they blamed Moylan for their predicament. Congress appointed a committee "to inspect the state of the army in New York." The committee arrived while Moylan was making valiant efforts in the face of overwhelming difficulties to get supplies again moving to the troops. After a three-day investigation the committee suggested in a "delicate" manner to Moylan that be resign in favor of Mifflin in an effort to restore the morale of the soldiers

Although he was convinced that he was the victim of circumstances beyond ''the power of man" to control, Moylan demonstrated his strength of character and his devotion to "the Glorious Cause we are engaged in," when he wrote to the President of the Continental Congress that he was ready to resign if it was deemed "for the publick good," and added that he would remain in the Army as a volunteer. This he did, and served with distinction at the battle of Princeton.

Late in 1776, upon orders from Washington, Moylan organized and took command of a regiment of dragoons, which became a part of the American cavalry commanded by General Pulaski. Moylan, with a display of Irish temper, engaged in a quarrel with Pulaski and Zielinski, another Polish officer, with the result that he was tried by a court martial. He was acquitted, but Zielinski later had the satisfaction of "unhorsing" him in a tilt. When Pulaski resigned his command of the cavalry, Moylan succeeded him and retained the post for three and a half years with outstanding success. His military career ended after the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, when ill health forced him to return to his home in Philadelphia.

Moylan occupied no position of national prominence after the war. He spent the greater portion of his life in Philadelphia, but for a while lived on a farm in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Washington appointed him Commissioner of Loans in Philadelphia--a position he occupied until his death on April 13, 1811, at the age of 74. He was buried on the grounds of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Philadelphia.
