Those who witnessed the Ritualistic Ceremony and Arch De-

gree at the Lake Havasu Ceremonial on October 16th saw

another fine performance by the two teams. We are fortu-

nate to have such fine actors and speakers on these teams.

However, we are in need of understudies for each of the

speaking parts in the two plays. Each time we perform

these, we experience scheduling conflicts by one or more

members, which results in the current members doubling up

on parts.

So, we nEED you! If you have an interest in working with

one of the Ritualistic teams, please contact Alan Dye or call

his cell (480-223-2914), or call the Shrine office (602-231-

0300). Understudy parts are available ranging from a few

sentences to several paragraphs.

We are looking for those members committed to excellence

in the performance, will attend approximately 3 practices

prior to each performance, and are willing and able to

travel with the teams to Lake Havasu City or wherever the

performances may be given in the future.

Nobles and Ladies, myLady Valerie and I are sovery proud to serve as the115th Potentate and First

Lady of El Zaribah Shriners during 2011. Twenty-one years ago I sat in the sand dunes outside

Yuma, attending my first Shrine Ceremonial as a Candidatethen a new Noble. While attentive to the Ceremonial, I tookin the Mounted Patrol, their horses in full Parade attire sur-rounding the grounds from on high, looking magnificent.Shortly after, we had the “2nd Section” which was allabout fun. I paid close attention to all that was hap-pening that day, and also kept an eye on then Po-tentate George Deitrich. I said to myself then,“one day I want to be Potentate.” 21 years later, here I am. I want to thank every one of you formaking my dream come true and for your voteof confidence and trust in me.

Over the past 4 years, I’ve had some fan-tastic mentors. Ill. Sir Russ Gunther – 2007; Ill.Sir Dave Polner – 2008; Ill. Sir Jim Miller - 2009and Ill. Sir Phil Houghton this past year. Each ofthese Potentates made a positive impact on me aswell as El Zaribah. I want to say “thank you” to eachof them. This isn’t to leave out all the other Past Poten-tates who mentored me and offered their help as wellthroughout the coming year.

Our motto this year is, “Havin’ Fun, Gettin’ It Done” andour emphasis is on increasing membership and communityawareness. We’re truly looking forward to having some funwith planned events, but at the same time, accomplishingour goals of increasing membership as well as projecting ourimage into the community in a positive manner while in-creasing the awareness of Shriners, El Zaribah and ShrinersHospitals for Children.

So many of you expressed your desire to help during2011 stating, “Just let me know, anything you need done,I’m here to help.” I’m now calling on you for that help.

You can indeed help me, and all El Zaribah Shriners, byobtaining just one new member for both the Spring and FallCeremonials. The Spring Ceremonial will be held at El

Zaribah April 23rd and of course, the Fall Ceremonial will bein Lake Havasu October 15th. Petitions for membership to ElZaribah may be found on our web site as well as in the Tem-ple office.

The new Membership Development Team led by Merle An-derson totals 18 people at this time, and I’m sure once every-one’s able to see the plan they’ve put together, more Nobleswill volunteer to help. This team includes Past Potes and evena Past Imperial Potentate, all there to help you bring someoneinto our fraternity. They have the knowledge and tools to help

you do that.At the Jan. Stated Meeting, we watched a presen-

tation by Membership Development Team ChairMerle Anderson and Asst. Rabban Ed Stolze thatgave us some eye-opening statistics. Nobles, it’squite simple. If we continue with the attitude, “well, this is the way we’ve always done it,” our belovedEl Zaribah won’t be the same as we know it today. If each of us, as Nobles of El Zaribah Shriners, doesn’t bring into our fraternity the new members

I’m asking you to, you won’t recognize El Zaribahby 2014. We’ll be under 1,000 members and unable

to operate our Temple. Immediately after StatedMeeting I had several Nobles come up to say it was a

great presentation by Merle and Ed and they just had noidea where we were until they saw these statistics. I’m count-ing on you now to fulfill those promises you’ve been makingover the past few months.

Here are some of the fun events we’re looking forward toover the next couple of months. Feb. 11th & 12th is Yuma Sil-ver Spur weekend. We’ll be joined by Al Bahr who’ll provide aroasted chicken lunch after the Parade, then El Zaribah willput on a Hillbilly Degree. The Yuma Foothills & Yuma ShrineClubs will hold an OV Friday evening.

Saturday, Feb. 26th is our Potentate’s Ball with a very spe-cial guest as well as entertainment by a very funny comedianand magician. Many reservations are already coming in. Bet-ter get yours in now, this will be a fun evening for all.Come see us at El Zaribah.Tom Calvin, Potentate 2011“Havin’ Fun, Gettin’ It Done”

Greetings from the bucket closet. Well, you’re stuck with me another year, and let’s hope I can continue giving you good news.

Right now, all of our buckets are doing very well and if you made the Feb-ruary meeting you heard the year-end results, which are very encouraging, especially during the hard times most people and businesses have experi-enced the past 2 to 3 years.

As I emphasize at each meeting, the biggest single reason we’re doingso well, and what continues to be our biggest asset, is the Nobility and theirfamilies. Please come to the functions whenever possible.

From the Treasurer...

after fezzing treasurer nate boyer, fern “spoke” to him

about his short pants

Potentate’s Bolo – The Hemis Kachina.

Probably one of the most beautiful and

best known of all Hopi Kachinas is the

Hemis Kachina. At sunrise, when the

Kachinas come to the plaza to dance for

the first time, they bring with them entire

corn plants, the first corn harvest of the

year, to distribute to the audience.

In Niman, or the Home Dance, no other

Kachinas appear, neither clowns nor side

dancers, only the Hemis Kachinas.

Masonic Charity:  The Masonic Sheaf of

Corn represents charity to the

less fortunate.

By now you should have heard about the exciting calendar of events PoteTom has in store for us, and surely some of the things have interest for youand yours. Try to come out and enjoy them.

Pote Tom’s following a series of extremely good leaders and has a toughact to follow and keep pace with, but with your help and involvement, I’m surehe’ll come through with flying colors.

Here’s hoping the entire year is good to you and yours, and hope to seeyou soon. The Bucket Man

First Lady’s Brooch - The Ram

Having a predominant role in

most cultures, the animal

symbolism of the Ram speaks of

Determination, Action, Energy,

Initiative and Sacrifice. It is also a

symbol of new beginnings. This

represents to me the

qualities within El Zaribah of our

Nobility and their Ladies,

the enduring passion to provide

children with new beginnings.

The Shriners Hospital for Children is very proud of their role in medical ed-ucation. For some 20 years, more than 8,000 doctors have received resi-dency education or postgraduate fellowship within the Shriners Hospitalshealth care system. By maintaining relationships with more than 60 medicalteaching facilities worldwide, Shriners Hospitals for Children foster an aca-demic environment committed to providing high-quality medical care to allpatients.

With all this in mind, if your family isn’t saving Campbell’s Labels for Edu-cation or Box Tops for Education product labels for your child or grandchild’sschool, won’t you please consider helping the Ladies Oriental Shrine at ElZaribah collect these labels for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children? By bringing these labels to the Shrine officeyou can help defray the cost of expensiveaudio/visual, electronic, textbooks and otherdevices used in the teaching process at thehospitals.

In addition to bringing labels in myself, I willarrange space in The Arabian Tales office forstorage and handling.

...Uniformed Units...

2011’s here and off to a great start with the Installation of the newDivan and the Unit and Club Officers. It’s time for all Mason-Shriners tostep up and become an active part of the El Zaribah Shrine. In order forour Temple to survive we need the membership to become active. Ifyou’re not an active member and want to become active, ask theRecorder for information on upcoming events that you can volunteer tohelp with. There are plenty of activities that could sure use your help.

The Outreach Clinics are in full swing and that means the Clowns willbe attending them as frequently as possible; if you want to volunteer, askIll. Jim Miller who’s taken on the duties of the Temple’s Hospital Chair-man, where and what you can do. There’s always plenty of work that canbe done. If you’ve never been to one of the Clinics then give yourself agift and come out and see the children your Temple’s helping.

The El Zaribah Clowns look forward toserving the Nobility of our Temple. Please re-member if you want our Unit to assist with anupcoming event, we need to be asked in ad-vance and not 2 or 3 weeks in advance. Weschedule months in advance and the morenotice you can give us, the better the

chances are we can help. Doug “BB Clown” Fry

With start of 2011, the El Dulabs want to wish the very best to our newPotentate and Divan and that wish also extends to all Nobles and Ladiesof El Zaribah.

We’d also like to thank our brother Rick Fasano for the excellent jobhe did as our President durning the past 2 years. As we all know, it’s notan easy task coordinating family, work, Masonic organizations, all whileattending Shrine and Unit functions. Rick did a fine job.

This year, our small but mighty Unit plans to par-ticipate in as many Parades and Shrine functions aspossible. So……..if you’re looking for a Unit and likeParades, old cars, classic cars and trucks, then ourUnit may be just for you! You don’t even have to havea “Parade ready “car right away.

So check us out and visit one of our monthly meetings on the 3rdWednesday at 7 pm. Howard Goldman, El Dulab Pres.

el Dulabs...

Hi and Happy New Year to all. We’re back in the swing of things again and looking forward to another

good year. We have some Parades comingup and looking forward to a good turnout forall. Remember, it’s music that keeps usyoung. J.

Greetings from the Culinary Unit. This is the time of the year when wemake plans and set goals for the months ahead. We’re starting with aclean slate and a chance to establish the things we want to achieve in twoimportant areas of our Unit, fund-raising and social activities.

There’ll be plenty of opportunities to get to-gether and serve at regular events, like theStated Meetings, the Barbeques and theCornFest, but there are other, more Unit-ori-ented activities to discuss.

To make sure you don’t miss out on anyof them, join us at our Unit meetings, held the3rd Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm. RalphJones, Scribe

Culinary...

Membership’s the word for 2011; Ill. Sir Tom Calvin has been empha-sizing this for many years. For the Director’s Staff, mem-bership is vital since our purpose is support for theDivan and to provide a great Ceremonial for our newCandidates or prospective Nobles. To support this pur-pose, we’ve remodeled our Director’s Staff room up-stairs at the west end of the building. The Unit meetingsare now in the room and the Unit’s in the process ofmoving all the Unit pictures up to the new room. Oncethese very important items arrive, the transformation willbe complete.

A second activity we’re planning is a Director’s Staff Steak Fry thisspring. At our Jan. meeting, we made preliminary plans and next monthwe’ll share them with you and have tickets available. We find that work-ing together on fund-raisers or Ceremonials really bring the Unit togetherand supports our and the Temples objective, Membership.

Our next dinner meeting is Feb. 23rd with social hour at 5:30, dinnerabout 6:45 and the Unit meeting following. Everyone’s invited; bring yourLady, kids and friends. Dinner is $10, prepared and served by the Unit.If you’d like to attend, please contact Leo Balthazor (602-740-5635) andhe’ll make a reservation for you. A Red Coverall

November brought sad news to the Oriental Band as the Black Camelpaid a visit to a key member of the Band for over25 years – Kenny Downes. Kenny was active withthe Band right up to the end and he was evenlooking forward to playing in the next Parade. Wepaid tribute to Kenny at his memorial service byplaying “Amazing Grace” on our musettes. Wealso played Amazing Grace at the Dec. StatedMeeting in honor of Kenny.

In December we joined the Drum and Bugle Corps to put on a Christ-mas Concert and potluck. The crowd appreciated the authentic orientalsounds of the Band for “We Three Kings of Orient Are” and “It Came Upona Midnight Clear” (at least they threw money our way as we played). Many thanks to the Drum and Bugle Corps for allowing us to participate.Did I mention the potluck had so much great food I think I put on 8 poundsjust that night.

Also in Dec., the musette players signed up to ring bells at the Salva-tion Army outside WalMart. We played Carols like “What Child is This(Greensleeves)”, “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” and “Oh Holy Night” onthe musettes during our 2 hr. block and we estimate people donated $250- $300 during that time. Many thanked us for playing true Christmassongs, including WalMart’s employees who said we could be heardthroughout the store.

On New Years Eve, when the Concert Band pulled out of the FiestaBowl Parade, I put on my long johns, sweat pants, a wool sweater andthe Class A Shiek outfit and marched behind the Divan, just in front of theClowns. I was mostly playing traditional Oriental Band music but fromtime to time, you could hear me playing “Auld Lang Syne.” ABC TV hadgreat coverage of the Parade with over 7 minutes dedicated to the Shrine. We even got a close-up of Bob on the musette playing “Nomad” and“Hootch.” You can go to their website and view the Shrine Parade entriesif you hurry. We’re about 18 minutes into Part 4’s segment.

We’re looking forward to participating in many upcoming Parades, starting with Laveen and Apache Junction in Feb. Happy New Year - SC

Here we are at the end of another great year. This year will even bebetter, under the Direction of our new board President.

For those who didn’t make the Christmas Party and OV with the otherUnits, you missed a great and fun filled event. We presented our Poten-tate with a token of our appreciation and his Lady for the job they both didfor us this year. They will both be missed.

We finished up the year with the Fiesta Bowl Parade and was it everfresh. So fresh that some of the folks up north couldn’t come down, theywere saying something about snow. Sorry, we sure missed all of you.

We want to tell Ted to get well soon so hecan come back and play with all of us. You’remissed; get well soon, looking forward toseeing you soon.

We’re pleased to see Jim back at ourplace. After taking this year off from ParadeChairman, he’ll be back to us as our Chair-man and it’ll be great to see that truck back where it belongs (Trans-portation).

Please try to attend Feb. meeting, and bring your dues.Just a note - we no longer have the motor home, the Clowns are now

Casa Grande Shrine Club’s looking forward to a successful 2011. Ournew Officers are in place and ready to go.They are: President Jerry Hampton; VP RayAtkins; Sec. Ken Karnes and Treas. Tom Car-dona.

We’ve investigated different places inCasa Grande to hold our meetings. Either theplaces are too small or charge too much forour Club. Presently we’re at Eva’s on Pinal. Some members have ex-pressed a dislike to the Mexican food; however, Eva’s has an Americanmenu also.

Casa Grande had a Veteran’s Day Parade and 8 of our Nobles werein it. Jerry Hampton and Ken Karnes are Clowns and were in the Flo-rence Parade.

We’re looking forward to a good meeting and our OV in February. Ken Karnes, Sec.

The entire Corpswould like to thank Jack and his slate of 2010 Officers for their work inseeing that 2010 was a great year for the Drum & Bugle Corps. And we’reconfident Jack and his 2011 Officers will continue to ensure the Club re-mains strong, participating in Temple events as they have in the past.

Congratulations to Tom Calvin in being elected Potentate of El ZaribahShrine for 2011. We’re proud of him and looking forward to a great yearunder his leadership. The Drum & Bugle Corps plans to be an active Clubthis year and stands ready to support Tom, the rest of the 2011 Divan, andall of El Zaribah with our presence.

At the Drum & Bugle Corps meeting Dec. 21st, we held a ChristmasParty for members, their Ladies, the Oriental Band and several guests. This was our 3rd annual party and performance, and as every year since,we had a great time. Everyone brought more food than we could possi-ble eat. We again performed several Christmas numbers, had a per-

formance by the Oriental Band, listened to the D&B“Symphonic Quartet,” and had a lot of laughs. Thanksgo to everyone who contributed to this fun event.

The Drum & Bugle Corps is always looking for thosewho enjoy music and camaraderie and have thoughtabout what fun it would be to play an instrument in aband. I’m always surprised with the number of ShrinersI meet who say they played an instrument 30 or 40 yearsago but “could never do it now” or “have forgot every-thing they learned.” We guarantee if you come down anyTuesday evening at 5:30 pm in the Band Room to look

us over, we’ll have you playing with us the first night. Alto Bugle

My, how time flies when you’re having fun. Here it is February and2010 just flew by.

The Sun Lakes Shrine Club’s Annual Golf Outing at Sun Bird Coun-try Club Nov. 13th was an outstanding success and is the Club’s mainfund-raiser. There were some 140 golfers plus additional workers andparticipants who enjoyed the barbecue and awardceremony on Sun Bird’s patio afterwards. Manythanks to all the committee members and spon-sors who contributed to the success of the event.Noble Don Watkins chaired the event, ably as-sisted by never tiring Nobles and their Ladies whoworked from setup at 6:00 am to tear down at 3:00pm. The event awarded the usual low gross andlow net flight winners, closest to the pin, longestdrive as well as a cash drawing and over 100 drawing prizes. Incomewas substantially greater this year, in spite of the downturn of the econ-omy, which says a lot about residents and businesses in and around SunLakes who desire to support the Shiners and their activities.

Our Nov. 8th dinner meeting was well attended as we inducted 2 newmembers and our 2011 Club Officers. The Club wrapped up 2010 with ourAnnual Christmas Party Dec. 13th at the Sun Lakes Country Club wherewe enjoyed a fun evening of fellowship, holiday spirits, gift exchange, good food and lots of laughs. In addition to being our Club’s ChristmasParty, it was our annual OV by El Zaribah’s Potentate Ill. Sir PhilHoughton honoring him and his lovely Lady Ronda.

Jan. 10th was our start for the new year and was well attended. Weswore in new member Jim Smith and voted to approve minor by-lawchanges. The food was excellent as always.

Now that the Golf Outing, Christmas Dinner/OV and Election of our2011 Officers are finished, we’ll be back to our regular meeting/dinnerschedule the 2nd Monday of each month in the AZ Room at Sun LakesCountry Club. Be sure to attend the Feb. 14th Valentine’s Meeting andDinner. The festivities will start with social time at 4:30, break at 5:00 forthe Meeting, then at 6:00 pm is Dinner. All Shiners, their Ladies, hon-orary members and guests are invited.

Notes for members of the Club - Don’t forget you can bring guests toour dinners and it’s a good way to let prospective members experiencethe fun the Club has to offer.

The members of the Sun Lakes Shrine Club wish all a very prosper-ous, healthy and fun 2011. Through the efforts of the Shrine, we hopeothers less fortunate will also enjoy the upcoming year.

Foothills Shrine Club operates from October through April. Its purposeis to provide a Shrine Club for visiting Nobles in Yuma. These visiting No-bles from the far north including Canada are those who fill our Club andUnits with Officers and members; they serve on the several committees, volunteer with our Shriner Diners and participate in our Colts Parade ac-tivities.

Several of our Ladies have a fund-raising activity to benefit our Hos-pital program and it’s our Ladies who decorate our tables so beautifullyat the socials. The December 2010 Social decorations were especiallygreat and were justly appreciated!

The Nobles who served our Club so wellin the past but are now unable to participatebecause of poor health or injury deserve ourgratitude for the many past years they did so.

Some special activities are the aluminumcan collection & raffle by Dirty Ernie, the jew-elry sales, the Noble Lee fish feed, and sev-eral others. We should honor those Nobles

who’ve sponsored children into our Hospitals. Also those who volunteerwith the Helping Hands organization, County Game & Fish, their Church, the Sheriff Department and those who help Yuma Shrine Club at theirFair Booth, Circus and much more.

Nobles: Don’t take laxatives and sleeping pills the same night! IT’S GRAND TO BE A SHRINER! Joe Elleard, news writer

In July 2010, Shriners Hospitals for Children started accepting third

party pay (insurance) when it’s available. As this program expands to all

the Shriners Hospitals in the system, it’s imperative that Shriners use the

proper terminology when explaining our hospitals. It’s also important from

time to time to review what our hospitals do.

The following statement comes from the cover page of the Shriners

Hospitals for Children official website: Shriners Hospitals for Children

is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the

lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative re-

search, and outstanding teaching programs for medical profes-

sionals. Children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burns,

spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and

receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of

the patient’s ability to pay.

The key phrase is that children receive all services in a family-cen-

tered environment, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. This is

what we need to stress. Shriners Hospitals for Children will continue to

provide very high quality care to children, just as they’ve done for almost

90 years. If insurance is available, then Shriners Hospitals for Children

will accept it. If insurance isn’t available, Shriners Hospitals will still care

for those children also.

Since third party pay is going to be collected by an outside agency, our

hospital staffs (doctors, nurses, etc) won’t know which children have in-

surance and which don’t, thus the quality of service and care will be equal

to all children and this is the way we as Shriners want it.

I hope this answers most of your questions. Please call the El Zaribah

Shrine Hospital Office if you have any further questions or concerns. We’ll

get the answers for you. Jim Miller, PP, Hospital Chairman

Please join me in congratulating Tom on being Noble of the yearfor 2010. Phil Houghton

...phil’s farewell and thanks to ronda...EL Zaribah Nobles, Ronda and I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks

to all of you for allowing us the honor of representing EL Zaribah Shrinethis past year. We had many wonderful experiences, visited many places, made new friends and solidified existing friendships. One of the greatesthonors was to see the work our Nobles and Ladies do to put on greatevents at our Shrine. Everyone puts their heart and soul into our fund-raising efforts and our entertainment events.

Part of the leadership role is to help create memories people enjoy. Ourmemories are numerous and we enjoy them. I hope you took away somepositive memories from last year and talk about them often.

I encourage you to keep your eyes, vision and focus on the future. Ourorganization needs your focus on the future to help us survive and be-come better. We have some good people on the Divan who have the bestinterest of the Shrine at heart and they deserve all the support we cangive them. It truly takes each and every one of us to pull together to helpus move into the future. Things are changing and so must we. Big picturethinking and planning for how to get there must be done.

We ended the year with a fantastic event, the Christmas Party for ourhospital patients and their families. It was beautiful, we had a good timeand saw many happy children and families that day. The response fromthem has been fantastic. The entertainment for that day, Michael Finney, has pledged to come back and help again next year to make it bigger andbetter. That says a lot for him to donate his time, effort, money and pres-ence to make our children feel better. A special thanks to Ronda for or-

ganizing it, Michael Finney for the entertainment, and to all the peoplewho helped put it together and made donations to the project during theyear. We’re making plans to do it again.

In closing, I say: Thanks for the memories! Remember, Together WeCan Make A Difference!Yours in the faith, Phil and Ronda Houghton

First Lady Ronda Houghton donated all the fundsshe received throughout the year, in addition to lots ofher own money, for toys and goodies for our childrenat the Christmas Party.

A big THANK YOU for her devotion to our KIDSand the Temple in general.

In 2009, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Northern California identified a gene in mice that may uncover the fundamental mechanisms of cleft lip and palate, a common birth defect that affects about 5,000 children annually in the U.S. The discovery was made by a research team led by Chengji Zhou, Ph.D., a principal investigator for the Institute of Pediatric Regenerative Medicine (IPRM), a collaborative research program of Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Northern California and the University of California, Davis.

The research revealed that all of the mice with a disrupted gene named Lrp6 developed a cleft lip and cleft palate and showed the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms involved. The findings of Dr. Zhou and his colleagues were published in the September 2009 issue of the scientific journal, Development.

“This discovery may someday allow scientists and doctors to identify the mutations in related human genes that may cause cleft lip and cleft palate in children and to find new drug targets to prevent this kind of birth defect during pregnancy,” said David Pleasure, M.D., director of research at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Northern California and the IPRM. “Our hope is that scientific discoveries made by Dr. Zhou and the team of researchers working at Shriners Hospitals for Children® will one day transform the lives of children faced with congenital birth defects and other physical challenges.”

A New Treatment Additional research in the field of cleft lip and palate includes the development of a new method of treatment of patients with wide cleft lip and palate. Created by Beth Roscoe and Philip Stoddard, M.D., of Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Springfield, the innovative process helps close the gap prior to cleft lip surgery.

A plaster model of the patient’s lip and palate is scanned into a computer. Then, using CAD/CAM (computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacturing), a series of palate-shape corrections are created on the computer. The corrections are designed to serially reduce the gap, taking growth into consideration.

These digital models guide the manufacturing of the series of corrective appliances for the patient. It generally takes about 12 corrective steps to achieve the desired result (each device closes the gap by about half a millimeter on each side, and is worn for a week). Ideally, this method is meant to begin when the patient is about 1 month old and takes from 10 to 15 weeks to complete.

Research Provides Better Understanding and Treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate

(left) Dr. Zhou’s research is contributing to a better understanding of the possible genetic causes of cleft lip and palate.

(right) Dr. Stoddard’s research has led to a new, less invasive treatment for cleft lip and palate. Here, he looks at a series of corrective devices used in the treatment.

www.shrinershospitals.org

OSQ310RPBU

Saving Time and MoneyThere are several benefits to using this procedure, according to Dr. Stoddard. The computer-assisted design provides consistent results; it allows for expected normal growth; the appliances are not surgically inserted, therefore, no anesthesia is required; clinic wait times are reduced; and if patients live far from the hospital, several appliances in the series can be given to the family at a time, reducing the number of visits to the hospital. The new process saves time and expense.

Shriners Hospitals for Children®

has a patent pending. These research projects

exemplify Shriners Hospitals for Children®’s commitment to improving care for children with cleft lip and plalate through a comprehensive, coordinated program, including research.

Cleft lip and palate deformities occur when the tissue that forms the upper lip and roof of the mouth fail to join together before birth. The condition is associated with alterations in speech, hearing and facial growth. Cleft lip and palate is corrected by reconstructive surgery and multidisciplinary therapies.

Approximately 5,000 children are born each year in the U.S. with cleft-associated deformities. In fact, facial clefts are one of the most common birth defects in the U.S. Children with facial clefts have various interrelated problems involving the brain; the development of the skull and facial bones; the structure of the ear and the ability to hear; the teeth and the ability to chew and eat; and the mouth and nose and the ability to breathe and speak. Reconstruction must be staged with the child’s growth in order to restore the facial skeleton and functionality as completely as possible.

A Common Birth DefectDespite the frequency of its occurrence, and the severity of the deformities, care for patients with cleft lip and palate can be difficult to obtain. For this reason, Shriners Hospitals for Children® added cleft lip and palate to the health care system’s service lines in 2005. Treating cleft and palate problems is a long-term commitment; children require care from birth to adolescence, which fits well in the health care system’s mission of providing family-centered care until the patient’s 18th birthday.

Care for cleft lip and palate is currently available at the Shriners Hospitals for Children® located in Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston, Los Angeles, Northern California, Portland and Springfield. Multidisciplinary services include surgery, orthodontics, hearing, speech and psychological therapies, and additional supports.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® has also partnered with the Humanitarian Foundation of the Grottoes of North America, a Masonic-affiliated fraternal organization. Children with special needs are often excluded from normal childhood dental care, which is important in the successful treatment of cleft lip and palate, and the Foundation will provide appropriate patients who need cleft lip and palate surgery with financial assistance for routine dental care. The partnership has benefited more than 50 Shriners Hospitals for Children® patients.

Cleft lip and palate is a common and serious condition. Shriners Hospitals for Children® is committed to improving care for children with this condition through a comprehensive, coordinated program of clinical excellence, teaching and research.

Mollie Carlson is just one of the many children

with cleft lip and palate who has received

treatment from Shriners Hospitals

for Children®. Today, Mollie is studying

communication disorders in college,

and hopes to one day be a speech-

language pathologist.

One reason Shriners Hospitals for Children® is renowned world-wide as a leader in burn care is the excellence and expertise of the health care systems staff. Two examples are Oscar Suman, Ph.D., and Robert Sheridan, M.D.

Oscar Suman, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist and director of the Childrens Exercise and Wellness Center at Shriners Hospitals for Children® Galveston and associate professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, was honored by President Barack Obama for his work in helping children recover from burns at a White House ceremony in January.

Dr. Suman was one of 100 researchers selected to receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Sci-entists and Engineers. The award is the highest honor given by the government to outstanding scientists and engineers who are in the early stages of their careers. The award is meant to recognize scientists who have demonstrated potential for leadership in developing and discovering knowledge in science and technol-ogy. Dr. Suman specializes in developing exercise regimens to help children recover from burns.

It is an extremely great honor to be nationally recognized for the work we do at the Shriners Hospi-tal in Galveston, said Dr. Suman. It is a re! ection of the great work and dedication that our Galveston staff and faculty exhibit daily. I hope to be able to continue to devote my life to burn care research.

The Presidential Early Career Award for Scien-tists and Engineers Program is administered by the National Science and Technology Council. Several participating federal agencies submit nominations, including the National Institutes of Health, which nominated Dr. Suman.

The respect for Shriners Hospitals for Children® among those in the burn care " eld is indicated by prestigious leadership positions held by hospital staff. Robert Sheridan, M.D., assistant chief of staff of Shriners Hospitals for Children® Boston currently serves as the president of the American Burn Asso-ciation, a premier national organization dedicated to improving the lives of those with burn injuries. In addition, Dr. Sheridan is co-director of the Sumner Redstone Adult Burn Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Sheridan is certi" ed in surgery and surgical critical care and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Chest Physicians and American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

The expertise of the medical staff of Shriners Hos-pitals for Children® is part of what allows the health care system to change the world through caring for kids every day.

Brittany Fojtik was a dancer in peak physical condition when a car accident left her with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Doctors told her that she was paralyzed from the chest down and would never walk again. The tenacious young girl, then 10 years old, set out to prove them wrong.

The dedication and drive that helped Brittany succeed as a dancer was redirected toward making a full recovery. She devoted many long hours to therapy at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago and just two years after her injury, not only is she walking – she is dancing again.

On Nov. 2, 2008, Brittany was en route to her family’s new home in Katy, Texas. Brittany and her brother, Daniel, sat in the middle seat of their minivan as their father drove. While the van was moving, Brittany unbuckled her seat belt to grab an item from the back.

A sudden and unexpected turn of the wheel caused the van to hit a concrete

through the air and Brittany was ejected from the car out the back window;

pavement.The next thing Brittany remembers

is a man telling her “everything is going to be OK.” She was surrounded by sirens, ambulances and paramedics before being airlifted to a hospital in nearby Houston. Her mother, Beverly Fojtik, was told she may not make it

In addition to her SCI, Brittany sustained a broken arm, hip, wrist, nose and ribs, as well as massive internal bleeding. After spinal fusion surgery, Brittany spent 18 days in the intensive care unit while her vital signs stabilized.

As Brittany’s condition continued to improve, it became clear that she would need rehabilitation at a facility that specialized in pediatric SCI. A therapist recommended Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago to the family and on Dec. 1, 2008, a transport team relocated her to the Windy City.

Brittany worked with physical and occupational therapists at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago for two-and-a-half weeks in early December. Examinations during this admission indicated that she had sustained a complete SCI (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale A), meaning she had very little chance of walking again. Despite the dim prognosis, Brittany’s progress continued. The day before she left to go home for the Christmas holidays, she discovered that she could move one of her big toes.

“It all started happening so fast,” explained Beverly. “When we got home the next day, she was able to swing her leg from side to side. From then on,

there was some kind of new movement all the time.”

Brittany returned to Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago in mid-January 2009 for a month-long stay. Her therapists began standing her up and she was able to move her hips a little bit. With the help of leg braces and

steps since the accident on Feb. 11, 2009.

“I cried and cried and cried,” Beverly said. “And I wasn’t the only one – the nurses and therapists were crying too. Nobody expected this.”

she began rehabilitation, she has progressed from a wheelchair to a walker to forearm crutches. She now walks with a cane and only uses her wheelchair at the mall and the airport.

The level of recovery and return of function that Brittany experienced is unusual and was a wonderful surprise and outcome for both the SCI team that worked with her and her family. Doctors noted a number of factors that contributed to her success, including her physical condition prior to the injury, a positive personality and a lot of hard work.

Brittany is now back on the dance
