Good news fellow Lions! It is only one month until spring. I for one cannot wait to see the green grass and spring buds.

Well the big news this month was being able to present three Melvin Jones Fellow-ships. The first was to Lion Grant Malcolm which was presented to him at his home. Tom brought coffee and muf-fins and about 20 of us had nice visit with Grant. He was very surprised and pleased. On Feb 7th, we surprised Lions Jim Thomson and Ken Harris with their M J Fellowships. Every Lion (from a club in good standing) can enter a photograph of his or her immediate surroundings into the club-level Lions Environmental Photo Contest.

The purpose of the photo contest is to showcase the beauty of nature. In 1972, Lions Clubs International made a commitment to protecting the en-vironment.

Lions can enter photographs of their environment (without people) in one of the following five categories:

* animal life * plant life * urban or natural landscape * weather phenomenon * a special annual theme

Winning club-level photographs will advance to the district, multiple dis-trict, and international competitions. Registered attendees of the Lions in-ternational convention will vote for the six (includes Best of Show) inter-national photo contest winners.

Re: Lions Camp Dorset

Dear Lions Family,

As I look out as the blowing snow it is hard to think ahead to the needs of our Lions Camp Dorset for this coming summer.

But, in order to be ready for our Dialysis families, we must plan for their needs and have the camp ready for their use so they may enjoy a well deserved vacation with their family.

The 2008 Lion's Family Cleanup Prior to Camp Opening is from June 13th to 20th. Dialysis families will start to arrive on June 22/08.

Please click on the web site www.lionscampdorset.on.ca for all information regarding Lions Camp Dor-set. For specific information and photos regarding schedules/wish list etc. click on the respective tabs;

Lions/Lioness/Leos Fundraising Lions Camp Dorset Information

I would like each one of you, to help me reach as many Lioness &/or Lions as possible, and pass the word along that we do need help, either manually or monetary.

It is important that anyone who wishes to come to Lions Camp Dorset for a work party (any date, weekend or weekday) let us know so that we may have accommodations avail-able and food on hand.

So, as the saying goes “Many hands makes for light work”. Hope to see lots of you June 13th to 20th or anytime you have available.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

A jumper cable walks into a bar. The barman says "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."

A sandwich walks into a bar. The barman says, "Sorry we don't serve food in here."

A dyslexic man walks into a bra.

A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm and says, "A beer please, and one for the road."

Two aerials meet on a roof, fall in love and get married. The cere-mony wasn't much but the reception was brilliant.

Two cows standing next to each other in a field, Daisy says to Dolly "I was artificially inseminated this morning." I don't believe you," said Dolly. "It's true, no bull!"

Two hydrogen atoms walk into a bar. One says, "I've lost my elec-tron." The other says, "Are you sure?" The first replies, "Yes, I'm positive..."

A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet and says, "My dog's cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?" "Well," says the vet, "let's have a look at him." So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then checks his teeth. Finally, he says "I'm going to have to put him down." "What? Because he's cross-eyed?" "No, be-cause he's really heavy."

I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day, but I could-n't find any.

I went to the butchers the other day and I bet him 50 quid that he couldn't reach the meat off the top shelf. And he said, 'No, the steaks are too high.'

My friend drowned in a bowl of muesli. He was pulled in by a strong currant.

If staying in a haunted house, women should investigate any strange noises wearing their most revealing under-wear.

If being chased through town, you can usually take cover in a passing St Patrick's Day parade - at any time of the year.

All beds have special L-shaped top sheets that reach up to armpit level on a woman but only waist level on the man lying beside her.

All grocery shopping bags contain at least one stick of French bread.

It's easy for anyone to land a plane, providing there is someone in the control tower to talk you down.

Once applied, lipstick will never rub off - even while scuba diving.

The ventilation system of any build-ing is a perfect hiding place. No one will ever think of looking for you in there and you can travel to any other part of the building without difficulty.

You're likely to survive any battle in any war unless you make the mis-take of showing someone a picture of you sweetheart back home.

Should you wish to pass yourself off as a German officer, it will not be necessary to speak the language. A German accent will do.

The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any window of any building in Paris.

People of TV never finish their drinks.

A man will show no pain while taking the most ferocious beating but will wince when a woman tries to clean his wounds.

When paying for a taxi, never look at your wallet as you take out a note - just grab one at random and hand it over. It will always be the exact fare.

If you lose a hand, it will cause the stump of your arm to grow by 15 cm.

Kitchens don't have light switches. When entering a kitchen at night, you should open the fridge door and use that light instead.

LFC/LCIF/LIONS NEWS

Dear Club Officers:

Best wishes and Happy New Year to you and your Lions club!

The beginning of a new calendar year is an opportunity to reflect on the previous year’s accom-plishments and look ahead to the opportunities we will have in the months ahead. By far, the greatest of these opportunities is Campaign SightFirst II (CSFII).

What we have accomplished to-gether thus far is remarkable. Over the last three years, Lions worldwide have raised more than US$130 million toward our US$150 million CSFII minimum goal, an amazing feat. These funds will provide sight to ap-proximately 22 million people in danger of losing their sight to the scourges of preventable blindness. But before we cele-brate our accomplishments to date, we must realize that the sight of millions more individu-als hangs in the balance.

Now, we have just six months to exceed this minimum goal and strive toward our challenge goal of providing “Vision for All.” Only through the continued ef-forts of Lions worldwide will we save 37 million people’s sight.

Throughout this year, we have addressed the “Challenge to Change” in a variety of ways. How will your club’s actions through CSFII in the next six months change the lives of indi-viduals who otherwise face a life of blindness? This January, I challenge you and your club to

be a part of CSFII’s success.

Since the SightFirst program can save one’s sight for an aver-age of US$6, every Lions club has the power to change lives. Consider if each Lion in your club was dedicated to saving the sight of 30 people in the next six months. If each Lion personally committed to saving the sight of

at least 30 people, CSFII would surpass its minimum goal and millions of individuals would have their vision restored or saved.

As a club officer, you have the task of leading your club in this effort. Whether your club mem-bers have not yet participated in CSFII, or have raised or pledged some funds, or even if they have already done much for CSFII, I ask you to consider what more you can do to bring the miracle of sight to millions around the world.

I have every confidence that your actions and conviction dur-ing the final six months of CSFII will inspire your club

members to accept the “Challenge to Change,” whether they are saving the sight of 30, 300, 3,000 people or many, many more!

Sincerely,

Lion Mahendra Amarasuriya International President The International Association of Lions Clubs

Dear Friends:

On behalf of Lions Clubs Inter-national and Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) , it is our pleasure to write to you to announce a new partnership between our two organizations. Our two organi-zations have been supportive national colleagues for many years. Together, we took a posi-tive step to formalize this rela-tionship in 2007.

CADCA is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen the capacity of com-munity coalitions to create and maintain safe, healthy and drug-free communities. CADCA represents over 5,000 commu-nity coalitions across the coun-try. CADCA provides training and technical assistance, public policy and advocacy, media and communications support and hosts major training and net-working events like the annual National Leadership Forum. In-ternationally, CADCA is assist-ing the U.S. Department of State by teaching anti-drug

Why we love children (kind of goes with Vision Screening.) * I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my five-year-old shout from the back seat, "Mom! That lady isn't wear-ing a seat belt!"

* My son Zachary, 4, came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he'd dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. So I fished it out and threw it in the garbage. Zachary stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bath-room and came out with my toothbrush. He held it up and said with a charming little smile, "We better throw this one out too then, 'cause it fell in the toilet last week."

* A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, "What's the matter haven't you ever seen a little boy before?" * It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was bark-ing, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. "Is that a dog you got back there?" he asked. "It sure is," I replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, "What'd he do?" * On the first day of school, a first grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, "The opinions expressed

by this child are not necessarily those of his parents."

* While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about six years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, "Are you a cop?" "Yes," I answered and continued writing the report. "My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?" "Yes, that's right," I told her. "Well, then," she said as she extended her foot toward me, "would you please tie my shoe?"

* A little girl had just finished her first week of school. "I'm just wasting my time," she said to her mother. "I can't read, I can't write and they won't even let me talk!"

coalition building principles to community-based organiza-tions in Peru, El Salvador, Co-lombia, Mexico and Brazil.

Our two organizations share a common goal, to provide young people with the skills they need to reject drugs and live healthy, productive lives. Lions Clubs International has re-cently demonstrated support for community anti-drug coali-tions by becoming a sustaining member of CADCA. Together, CADCA and LCI have commit-ted to work together to develop strategies in three distinct ar-eas:

1.) Increase awareness and education about the mission and projects of each organiza-tion through all communica-tions vehicles and at each or-ganization’s major conferences.

2.) Provide opportunities for Lions Clubs members and community coalitions to mean-ingfully connect at the local level.

3.) Consider future part-nerships, both domestically and internationally, that seek to reduce drug use and its asso-ciated consequences.

At this writing, we are confi-dent that many local connec-tions between Lions Clubs members and anti-drug coali-tions exist. We applaud these partnerships and seek to en-courage them in a more formal way. if you want to start such a relationship, we ask that you contact CADCA at 1-800-54-CADCA, Ext. 228. The CADCA staff will connect you to a coali-tion in your area.

This letter serves as the official launch of our partnership. We are excited for the work ahead. Thank you for your ongoing service to improve our world. We hope you will assist us in making significant connections between our two great organi-zations at the local level.

Sincerely,

Al Brandel Arthur T. Dean

I trust that everyone has noticed that the second dinner meet-ing in march is on the 13th. As the

20th is Maundy Thursday the churches did not wish to serve dinner that night. Hence the change.

We are back to Vision Screening again. If you haven’t participated in this program please consider it. The chil-dren are great and if we help but a few (or even one) if is worthwhile.

I went with A 16 Governor Dick to Richmond Hill re-

cently. In talking with Presi-dent Alan over pie and coffee, I was reminded that different members have different tal-ents and therefore make dif-ferent contributions.

One sometimes comes up against the “A Lion is a Lion is a Lion philosophy, “ But in truth all Lions are different — some are good at sales, some at technical matters, some at project management, etc..

Members will enjoy Lionism more if assignments are based on talents and comfort levels. We, in Markham Lions are lucky that this is generally considered.

For example, if you watch one

of the good salesmen in the club at work you note they consider the glass half full, look people in the eye , start the conversation with a ques-tion , and don’t waste time where a sale is unlikely. On the other hand some other types see the glass as half empty, look anywhere but in the eyes, make a statement (product available) and likely see it all as a waste of time.

Maybe this is why we have all those jokes about travelling salesmen.
