Originally stitched on perforated paper, this m i n i - s a m p l e r i m a g e a p p e a r s o n NeedleWorkPress’s Web site at http://needleworkpress.com/node/22 ~ and here is what Vickie wrote about it on July 4, 2011: Chances are the motifs in this mini-sampler were selected by its maker because of their significance in her life. In my mind’s eye, the prominent rose spray says she appreciated beauty; the small cross represents her faith; the flag signals her independence, the bird proudly stands for freedom and the potted flower is stability. Who knows the truth? How wonderful that we are free to interpret art as we please. Just wait ‘til you see our over one interpretation of this rescued treasure from bygone days. You’ll see it soon in our workroom!

NeedleWorkPress’s “Roses in July”

Below: 3 photographs I took of Marsha’s model on our June visit to The Scarlet Letter that I hope give you an idea of the glorious floral border ~ but no progress photos this week; only finished leaves but will get to more flowers this week. It is my goal to reach the bottom of the right-side border by the end of February :-) We’ll see!

The original, right, was stitched in wool on canvas, with the maker’s initials (g a) flanking the tree ~ the “1882” date is also included. There are two “adaptation” colorways from which to choose, the brighter colors or the muted colors.

I am thrilled to show you these w o n d e r f u l n e w a l p h a b e t necklaces, handmade by Carol and her husband, Scott, images of beautiful initials that were stitched with a lovely red or blue silk on linen, photographed, and images enclosed in a silver-plated 1-inch pendant that is covered with raised glass and hung on a 30-inch chain. At $11.50 you can have one of each color for yourself ~ and they’re perfect for gift-giving to your family and friends. Pre-order now, for release at the Nashville market.

NEW, NEW, NEW!!!! Pre-Order Now

You’ve all met dear Carol through the pages of this newsletter ~ she’s been a friend, and friend of The Attic, for 20+ years. All who know her also know her heart of gold and her wonderful sense of humor ~ be prepared to laugh when she enters the room. There’s a palpable hole in the group when Carol is absent from a stitching get-together. “Fun” is her middle name. Whether it’s a Royal Wedding party or a Halloween get-together, the photos tell the story: Carol and her Pepsi are party animals! So it is very special for me to introduce you to Carol and husband Scott’s new venture, The Bees Knees and all that too, taking advantage of both of their special interests, Carol and her needlework and Scott and his graphic and photographic artistry.

It’s 2012 (February already, yikes!) and time to launch a new series of pincushion projects from JABCO. Make a simple gathered pincushion from a pattern and "make-do" with a container you already have.  Or display the pincushion on its own.  This simple design has lots of options, so give us your preference; we will reserve some for you. Clockwise from above: “Bee Mine,” a great Valentine gift with oodles of possibilities: the make-do pincushion kit, $49; the instruction pack (which includes everything but the material/wool), $22 ~ the Pin-It Ornament Kit, $22 ~ and the JustPins set, $14.50. “Snowball,” another make-do pincushion kit, $45 ~ or the instruction pack, if you want to use your own wool, $24.50 ~ or the Pin-It Ornament Kit, $23 ~ or the JustPins “S is for Snow,” $14.50

On the Way from Just Another Button Company

And 2012 at Just Another Button Company brings another new series: Button Buddies, little pincushions with big personality! Aren’t they adorable? A wool felt ball becomes a sheep, a penguin, a red bird, or a lovebug with the addition of a couple of JABC buttons and a bit of wool.  Add a button base and finish with a couple of Just Pins.  The pincushion stands 1.25" tall.  Available as a complete kit. “Sherry Sheep” & “Penny Penguin” $17 ~ “Tommie Tweet-Heart” & “Lola Lovebug” $19

A New Conversion

Featured in Sampler & Antique Needlework’s Issue #66 as its cover sampler, “Margaret Woodleigh” will be presented in 4 parts. Denise asked us to do a silk conversion, and here it is! We’ve selected 1 Au Ver A’Soie, 9 Dinky Dyes, and 13 Belle Soie (silk pack $140.05) + a gorgeous 40c Lakeside linen ($32). Of course, you already know this is my philosophy: Spending months creating a beautiful heirloom should be spent using the finest materials available, for the best result and the most enjoyment with your needle.

From Pineberry Lane, “Token of Love” $10 has been a favorite of mine since I first laid eyes on it. I started stitching it (on 40c Lakeside with a red Belle Soie) last year around this time but didn’t get it finished until late in the year, another time of year when I love stitching with red. And then Karen finished it into a lovely cushion with buttons! It’s not really as “white” as it looks in the photo but not as dark as the chart model. I love it!

And a New Shop Model ... a Valentine Cushion

Left, “Valentine Postcard,” $10, is a sweet little sampler that’s the size of a postcard and can actually be sent to your Valentine. The chart model is attached to a piece of matboard to write your Valentine greeting on the back and pop it in the mail. It’s a quick stitch just in time for this Heart celebration.Above, “To My Sweet Pinkeep” $10 was a design done last year for Stacy’s Girls Club, and I’ve loved it ever since seeing it so I’m so happy she’s released it for everyone! I can’t wait to stitch this. I love monochromatic, especially in red!

This came to me in an e-mail earlier this week, and when I read it, I couldn’t help but think about how very applicable Vitamin F is for needleworker friends.

Vitamin F  (Friends) Why do I have a variety of friends who are all so different in  character?  How can I get along with them all?  I think that each one helps to bring out a "different" part of me. With one of them I am polite.  I joke with another friend. I sit down and talk about serious matters with one.  With another I laugh a lot.  I listen to one friend's problems.  Then I listen to another one's advice for me. My friends are all like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.  When completed,  they form a treasure box.  A treasure of friends!  They are my friends, who understand me better than myself, who support me through good days and bad days.  We all pray together and for each other.   Real Age doctors tell us that friends are good for our health.  Dr. Oz  calls them Vitamins F (for Friends) and counts the benefits of friends  as essential to our well being. Research shows that people in strong  social circles have less risk of depression and terminal strokes. If you enjoy Vitamins F constantly, you can be up to 30 years younger than your real age.  The warmth of friendship stops stress and, even in your most intense moments, it decreases the chance of a cardiac arrest or stroke by 50%. I'm so happy that I have a stock of Vitamin F! In summary, we should value our friends and keep in touch with them. We should try to see the funny side of things and laugh together, and pray for each other in the tough moments.  Thank you for being one of my Vitamins!

Welcome, Nancy!I am pleased to introduce you to our newest staff member. Consummate artist Nancy Mills brings not only her love of needlework but her appreciation of many art forms to The Attic as the newest member of our staff. Nancy is an artist and teacher in her own right, melding painting, collage, and fiber art into unique one-of-a-kind creations. Her gift for art, meticulous cross-stitch skills,  and love of helping people make her a welcome addition to our enthusiastic staff. Nancy's primary passion is her busy Tempe, AZ, family that encourages her creativity and keeps her hopping pretty much 24/7. She's learning the nuances of the counted-thread world, not even skipping a beat when challenged by my fun-loving spouse, John, who enjoys putting new staff members through the paces when he calls and asks for plaid floss or Mother’s Day Specials in January.
