ESIDA'S HAPPY COUPLEWe interviewed couple Florence and George from Esida and this is what we discovered.13 May 2019 will be George and Florence’s 69th Wedding Anniversary and they are as in love and cherish each other now as much as they always have throughout their long and happy marriage.

Tell us how you first met.Leaving the family orchard in South Australia at age 17 and moving to Adelaide proved to be the beginning of an amazing love story. As fate would have it, a chance invitation to a birthday party saw a beautiful city girl catch his eye.

For Florence, then 18, the long pushbike ride across town for a school friend’s birthday was rewarded by a dashing young man who quickly stole her heart.

As their four and a half year courtship blossomed, they learnt to hold hands whilst riding their bikes to and fro across Adelaide.

Any tips on living a happily married life?George promised his mother he would attend Church once a month. When Florence decided to join him, they quickly formed strong friendships and became active with Sunday School and Missions, sharing a strong sense of community and fellowship.

“Being Christian, it was God first in our hearts and household’, tells Florence. “We didn’t have much and as we raised our first 3 children, we taught them to be happy with the simple things in life.”

"Often gifts were simple, so Florence would wrap them up with stones to trick the recipient into thinking they were bigger or heavier. She has a beautiful sense of humour." says George.

The couple were to be blessed with a 4th child later in life who kept the family young at heart.

What’s the best thing about your partner?Florence looks towards her sweetheart, George, and says “You better tell the truth.” and they smile, nod and laugh together like two peas in a pod. It’s clear to see their devotion to each other.

“Be open with one another. Don’t have cross words, thoughts or deeds. We never did.” says Florence. And George nods in agreement at his beautiful bride.

MAREBELLO'S HAPPY COUPLEThe bells rang on December 6th 1958…John and Shirley, who both reside here at Marebello, recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary! A magnificent milestone, with pictures of the happy couple on their Wedding Day placed around their rooms, and banners and balloons to remind them of this day. The ever popular performer Lachlan, who was entertaining that day, dedicated some love ballads, which had Shirley beaming with pride and happiness.

How they first metBoth were keen tennis players when they were younger, it was through tennis that they met. Never imagining their love of the game would lead to a perfect match!

Their life togetherJohn and Shirley were married on the 6th December, 1958. They had three children, Mark, Wendy and Susan. Both the girls became professional dancers, with Shirley making quite a few of Wendy’s ballet costumes. Performances were at an international level, which gave John and Shirley the opportunity to travel extensively overseas, proudly watching Wendy and Susan. This was a great time in their lives.

John and Shirley are now proud Grandparents to 6, with Susan and her family living in the Netherlands.

Shirley can be seen beside John every day…it’s really wonderful to see true love!

Our one year

milestoneHappy

BirthdayPortofino

On January 16, 2019, we celebrated a milestone at Portofino Hamilton. Our first birthday had arrived.

Ian Byron, Manager Portofino Hamilton, has been working in the aged care industry for 14 years. Previously managing Casa Dámore, Ian has now been working for Vacenti for over 5 years and has seen Portofino develop from an architect's plan, through construction site, to a fully functional Aged Care residence.

We spoke with Ian recently to gather his experience over the development and growth of Portofino to this day.

"It's phenomenal to look back over the year and see how far we have come. I could not be prouder of the quality care and service that is provided by our staff.

After 14 years in the industry, I would say it is most important to know each resident and their individual needs and that is exactly what Vacenti is founded on through their PERSON model of care.

We had our first resident Oliver move in on 19th of December. He was soon accompanied by fellow residents and it wasn't long until our small community grew into a family. Of all the rewarding experiences I have in this role, the best would be being able to witness residents living life to their full capabilities.

Moving into any aged care home can often be stressful and I'm grateful to be able to make a difference to people's lives during this time."

It's a wonderful opportunity to be able to care for those who have cared for us and made this great country what it is. We look forward to creating new memories and milestones with residents, families and staff.

Open Day March 26, 2018 Comments from our residents:"Everyone here is nice. I feel safe and secure living in the apartments at Portofino. Retirement Villages are good when you don’t need care but when you do it's not much help. This place is so adaptable. I have the freedom to do what I like everyday and I like to go for walks."

- Therese

"I love the freedom to have a coffee downstairs at Caffino or to a cafe down at Racecourse Road. I enjoy exercise and take advantage of the physio to help. I came to terms with needing help and now have better attention than I could elsewhere. Staff have great attention to detail and the cleanliness is pristine. I couldn’t find a better place."

- Olive

"I like to help support others and enjoy the freedom to go out and visit family. I don’t feel pressured to go to activities, but like joining in and helping out. I enjoy happy hour and community events. The atmosphere with the new building is spacious and I feel at home. It’s nice to have someone to talk to as I’ve been on my own for a while. The staff are bright and cheery and would do anything for you."

- Mary

"I feel safe. I’m well looked after. Everyone is so kind. The manager helps out too."

8 FEBRUARY 2019 - Vacenti Vibes Issue 20

As hot cross buns and school supplies over-run the supermarket shelves, I look back fondly on my recent family Christmas

holidays which left me charged and refreshed for the exciting year ahead. It’s always a great feeling to spend time on a family holiday and this year we ventured to Sydney. My husband and I divided the task of transport … he opted for the long haul road trip (“are we there yet?”) whilst I battled the airports, baggage limits (try that with a teenager!) and extortionist airport food prices. But it is all these trials and tribulations of travel that paint the colourful stories we tell when we return to work.Carrying on from our winning ‘Bonza crackin’ Christmas’ foyer decorations, I do hope you’ve had a chance to see our Australia Day display. Our resident men folk have created a magnificent Australia Day sign from fallen tree branches, ‘drop bears’ and a recycled pallet, whilst our clever art and craft ladies have created stunning barrier reef and wildlife flora and fauna collages. It really is magnificent and we’re leaving it up for a few more weeks in February so everyone can enjoy its full glory. Our bathroom renovations have kicked back into gear with the return of our tradespeople. By the time you read this edition, the finishing touches should be happening to our 3rd and 4th bathroom. 4 down, 2 to go and it’s all going well to schedule. Thank you again to everyone for their patience and understanding during these important works. I’m sure you’ll all agree how much better our facility is as a result. With our 2019 focus on continuous improvement, we always welcome your feedback. There are a number of ways you can let us know your feedback: come and speak to any of our staff, phone 3422 9500, send an email to [email protected], fill in one of the Share Your Experience forms at Reception or drop us a line to Esida/Lodge, 79 Foxglove Street, Mt Gravatt East, QLD 4122.Until next time,

Katherine McSpaddenActing Facility Manager

Hi from the Lifestyle Team.We have enjoyed a few great entertainers at our facility over the month of January.

One popular highlight that had everyone talking and moving was the African drumming session teaching the residents how to play a variety of drums and rhythms. It was great to see some of the Esida staff members attempting African style dancing. I don’t know who was laughing more: the residents or the entertainer, Joseph.I personally think we might just stick to our day jobs instead of cultural dancing! We look forward to having Joseph back at our facility in the coming months. We also welcomed an amazing artist, Rhylee, into our facility for her Artistic Drawing Classes which are being held on a fortnightly basis. Residents that have had a passion or interest in pencil art drawing are encouraged to attend. We have had a great first session of our Garden Club with a robust discussion about what plants need to be re-potted. The Garden Club are also planning to add some extra colour and plant varieties around the facility. We have exciting outings taking place in February including: a trip to Burkes Park for a picnic; to Dendy cinema to watch a new release film; and a trip to Brisbane City Hall for the Heritage Tour. Please remember, places are limited for each outing so if you would like to attend please book your space in the taxi with either one of the Lifestyle Team members.2019 is going to be a crackin’ good year of outings each month. There are more great outings in March so if you miss out on a space in February we hope to get you along to another fantastic location in the coming months.Until the next issue of Vibes, take care, stay well and we’ll see you at your next activity.

What a very hot and humid summer! I am not sure what is worse the 45.0 degree heat in South Australia (where I relocated

from previously) or the jungle humidity in Queensland. As per previous Vibes I would like to introduce Catherine L. Catherine was elected at the last resident and carers meeting for the role of Resident Advocate in Lorocco, in a volunteer capacity. Catherine’s father is a current resident of Lorocco. The Resident Advocate role supports Lorocco residents by listening to and working for residents’ interests and protecting their rights. Advocacy is working together with Lorocco staff to implement the changes residents would like with a focus on continuous improvement. The new Aged Care Quality Standards make it very clear that residents, as consumers, must be encouraged and supported to give feedback - good or bad, and must feel safe to do so. Catherine has commenced in the role and can be contacted when she is at Lorocco or alternatively emailing her at [email protected] to arrange a mutual time to meet. It is a privilege and a fantastic opportunity for all within Lorocco, a special thank you to Catherine. It is also timely to introduce Courtney Webb who has commenced in the role as an Occupational Therapist. Courtney has written the following: "Hi all, I am currently working at Lorocco four days a week, ensuring the residents receive therapies that manage their pain. My role also includes conducting allied health assessments for mobility and falls. I have an interest area in therapies for people with Dementia, and engaging people in their daily activities. I am looking forward to developing some group therapy sessions for residents who have Dementia and Alzheimer’s conditions. It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know the residents and team, and I am looking forward to working with everyone at Lorocco. I am also a huge animal lover and I feel that Portia and I are going to make a great team!"Portia has been missing in action and will be for the next 2 weeks, she is off to Boot Camp. She has been missed but am assured she will be returning with new skills and some needed behavior education. We look forward to her return.Take care,Cheryl TargettFacility Manager - Lorocco

At the beginning of 2019, many of our residents joined in a goal setting activity to enhance their leisure and health.

Each resident wrote their goals down and signed their intentions. We then sealed and signed the envelopes and will review them in 3 months time. The main collective goal was physical activity and increased attendance to group excursions. This January we focused on everything Australian. We proudly displayed our national and indigenous flag, we celebrated the Aussie spirit and culture with games and quizzes, and an outing to a bush café called Indigiscapes. For the first time we attended Casa Dámore for a collective Australia Day celebration. It was a wonderful experience for our residents as they enjoyed the BBQ, animal farm, sheep shearing and delicious damper. At home (Lorocco) we had a BBQ on Australia Day and raised funds to purchase bales of hay for our Aussie Farmers. It is such a pleasure to see that the community spirit always shines here. Our next concert/BBQ and happy hour is on the 7th of February and all are welcome. We look forward to being entertained by Dennis Boland with his musical flair. It is important to recognise and embrace the cultural needs of all our residents and make these days significant. As Lorocco residents enjoy learning about the diversity of cultures, we will be having a celebration on the 5th to mark the Chinese New Year - the Year of the Pig. We look forward to enjoying what our chef has in store for our taste buds. Not to forget, on the 14th this month we acknowledge Valentines day with a Hawaiian style couple’s lunch that will take place in the Cove. Please mark this event in your calendar and get ready to Hula and enjoy mocktails. Our intergenerational friendship group resumes this month. We love to spend time at the kindergarten to learn, grow and share stories. This month we will exchange books about Australia. If you have any requests for activities that you would like to incorporate, we welcome your suggestions. Please contact me via [email protected].

Here we are ...one month down already and what a month we’ve had!I enjoyed a wonderful break, spending time with some of my family who

travelled from England and Wales. We covered so much ground in 2 weeks and I couldn’t wait to get back and share my adventures with everyone!2018 finished with the sound of popping champagne bottles as we welcomed in the New Year. Our Wish Tree is still in view in the Rose Room with residents voicing their hopes for the New Year on vine leaves. Entertainment kicked off, with Caroline & Lou, C’est la Vie, Mike’s selection, Daphne, Elvis and Matty Bateson, getting everyone moving in their seats and even dancing! The cricket and tennis have been enjoyed on the television, and our residents have been sporting indoor bowls and putt putt. It was great to see those who have never putted before giving it a try. Some of us had a go at Origami, some made Aussie decorations, whilst others travelled to Switzerland during Armchair Travels. Great stories were shared as some of our residents had visited or lived there. It felt like we were all on the slopes as we marvelled at the ability of a 2 year old skier! Armchair Travels will be a regular monthly activity as we discover facts of the wonderful places in the world. In February we'll go to China as we Celebrate Chinese New Year. It’s the year of the pig! The Zodiac animal signs will be displayed in the Rose Room, so if you don’t know which animal you are, come by and check;Australia Day celebrations began at the beginning of the week with an Aussie sing along, Aussie movie, Aussie quiz and an Aussie Happy Hour before celebrating on the 26th. Our morning was spent outside, thong throwing, cooking snags, playing games, followed by a delicious BBQ lunch for all. Aussie poems and stories, and the classic movie, “The Dressmaker” screened on the 28th to cap off a very patriotic week! We look forward to a busy month ahead, we host Tournament of the Minds and love is in the air, come and have a look at our Wedding Photo Board, and see if you can guess who is who! Until next time, stay active and be happy.Jo Fazio with Lynne, Eileen & JodieLifestyle Coordinator & Team

Happy February!Welcome to the month of cupids arrow, love hearts and hopefully lots of chocolate!

With the door of 2018 definitely closed and Christmas a distant memory, January’s unrelenting heat tested our patience. Little to no rain has browned the grass and brought out the unwelcome slithering visitors searching for water and shelter. With the New Year swinging into glorious action, Marebello hosted its first “Family and Friends of Wisteria” morning tea. What a great morning we had listening to stories of our beautiful residents' pasts. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room from laughter. We welcomed new residents and staff and enjoy having Elena’s smiling face as a permanent at reception.Australia Day had the delicious smell of sausages and onion in the air that anyone would have thought we were at Bunnings. We all had a wonderful day. The message of ''we are one, but we are many... I am, you are, we are Australian'' was celebrated in true Aussie style.Renovations in Wisteria forged ahead with the opening of the stage 2 dining room. The transformation is incredible.February brings Valentines Day on the 14th. Valentines Day, also called Saint Valentines Day or the feast of Saint Valentine originated as a western Christian feast day honouring Saint Valentinus. Saint Valentine of Rome was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers, who were forbidden to marry. Before his execution he wrote a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell. He gave his all for love, I suppose you could say.Love is so powerful, I see it every day. I see our residents smiling gratefully at the carer that takes their hand when distressed, the families that visit and bring joy to their loved ones and the unspoken love and dedication displayed everyday by our beautiful staff. However you celebrate this day, remember, love comes in all forms, a gentle smile or touch of the hand. That smiling face that greats you every morning and says goodnight.Until next time,

Hello and welcome to our February update form Casa Dámore.A warm welcome to our residents, families

and staff that have joined our community this month. It is a pleasure to have you with us and to get to know you.2019 is certainly in full swing as we enter February – where did January go? I hope you have enjoyed your start to the new year and the fun and celebrations this time of year brings. It’s scary to see Easter Eggs already on the shelves of our supermarkets – one celebration down and the next one starting! But I don’t mind because I love chocolate – especially white chocolate!I had a short break and spent some time back on the Northern Rivers of NSW with my family, visiting friends and enjoying some time at the beach. This area is where our kids grew up, went to school and got their first jobs – lots of memories! It’s always nice to visit – but it’s just as good to be back home again. It was great to see so many family and friends visiting over the last month. If your schedule has changed this year and you have some spare time we would like to invite you to be involved in our community. We have many opportunities for you to volunteer in our facility. If this is something you would like to be involved in – please get in touch with either myself or our Lifestyle Coordinator, Marieann Edgell.A brief reminder also in regards to any new clothing received, please bring it to Reception so that we can organise for it to be labelled before going to our laundry. Is there something you would like to let us know? Please do not hesitate to get in touch, we want to hear your feedback. You can do this through our Share Your Experience form, by telephone, email or in person.Catch you next time!

The month has gone by so quickly.

What a busy month January was as we started with taking the Christmas

trees down, celebrating the New Year and then ending the month with Australia day. Our monthly birthday celebrations honoured a couple of our residents during January.

We visited the East Leagues Club where we went for music and morning tea and watched a group of ladies line dance/boot scoot across the dance floor, with Karen (staff) learning to boot scoot for the first time.

We celebrated Australia day on the 24th of January and had residents from Esida and Lorocco joining us. We started the day with a BBQ lunch and pavlova. Once lunch had finished we went to the basement where the animal farm was set up and watched Viv from Viv’s animal farm and sheering exhibition. Viv bought one of her sheep from her farm and she sheered the sheep and entertained us with expertise, experience and knowledge that she has with the animals in her care. Then after all the excitement we stopped and had damper and golden syrup for afternoon tea. The afternoon was a great success and was great bringing the three sites together; we look forward to getting together in the future.

The lifestyle team are currently running a leisure and lifestyle survey and looking to see what you would like to see on the monthly program, please complete the survey and return to Shebby at reception, Lifestyle staff or in the feedback boxes in the dining room or please feel free to drop us a line with any feedback or suggestions to [email protected].

Hello all,

We are well in to the New Year and Christmas is a distant memory and many

New Years resolutions have already been forgotten or broken, however we have a lot happening at Portofino to assist our residents keep their's.

Our staff and I are looking forward to assisting all residents be the best version of themselves that they can be and to assist them to achieve their goals. We are commencing swimming sessions in February for our residents. Residents will need to undertake an assessment before they can participate, Portia has already checked the pool to make sure that it is ready.

Residents can also attend daily chair exercises, attend the gym with our Physio or Occupational Therapist or join the walking group with Karen and Nirajan.

In other news, Portia will be off at Doggy Obedience School from the 30th of January to the 12th of February. We will be having a birthday morning tea for Portia on the 20th of February at 10:00am in the Retreat. All are welcome to attend to see how obedient she is.

If you are planning on visiting your loved one at Portofino there are a number of options for meeting spaces; The Caffino café is open 7 days, the Piazza is a lovely place to sit on a nice day, as are the many balcony spaces available.

If you need a private room please see Tash at reception who would be happy to assist. Please see me or complete a feedback form (available at reception) if you have ideas or suggestions.

Until next month,Ian ByronFacility Manager

Happy New Year to everyone.

Welcome to 2019. After ending the year with the residents favourite Happy

Hour, they have been looking at new adventures to do in the New Year. We had a travel agent come and speak to them about day trips to see the country side. Places like Maleny, Gold Coast, Hinterland, Bribie Island and the Flower Show.

Happy Hour has been more entertaining with the residents having a sing along and downloading their own songs.

We celebrated our 1st Birthday with the cutting of the cake and Oliver’s daughter came to celebrate with us. It was great to see so many residents joining in to make this event successful and memorable.

Italian Luncheon was another successful get-together feast. Big thanks to Head Chef Selena for the food and to Jill for bringing Lorocco residents along to join us.

Residents like their sporting activities, with their favourites being Ten Pin Bowling and Golf Putting. We have a weekly winner for these events. We had a round robin of 5 activities and a new winner came through the ranks with Dawn taking the win.

We hope the residents who were having trouble with televisions and mobile phones are finding it a bit easier after Nirajan and myself go around to help explain how to use them.

Roz was here again on demand with her storytelling singing style. The residents all become involved and enjoy the atmosphere when Roz plays all the old favourite songs.

Hello,

My name is Catherine and I am currently the Acting Manager at Con Noi Retirement Village. I’m no stranger to Con Noi as I have been relieving for Allen when he went on leave for the past two years. I must begin by giving a big shout out to all of the wonderful Residents of Con Noi who have once again welcomed me back and who have helped me through my learning curve during my tours.

The year is already speeding ahead, so it is good to report that the activities such as water aerobics and gentle exercise are once again in full swing. New members for both activities are always welcomed.

This years Australia day BBQ was well attended by the residents, with some family members joining in the fun.

The residents enjoyed a beautiful fare of Aussie tucker complete with pavlova with all the trimmings.

After lunch, some tried their hand at thong throwing… (try saying that really fast, three times in a row!) and were also treated to some bush ballads.

With the start of a new year, many of the residents have also taken time out of their day to catch up for a chat at our coffee shop, with Chelady preparing the coffees.

The residents have also been busy planning some new activities for the coming months with bingo and Sunday lunches at East Leagues Club to name a few.

We are still receiving enquiries regarding vacancies at Con Noi, so if your family or friends would like to come and take a tour, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 0418 588 468. Like us on Facebook and check out our website for the latest information.

Marriage HumourIn honour of Valentines Day and for love, take a break and enjoy some light humour on marriage.

WordsA husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day... 30,000 to a man's 15,000.

The wife replied, "The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men.

The husband then turned to his wife and asked, "What?"

RelativesA couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?"

"Yep," the wife replied, "in-laws."

The Devoted HusbandAn elderly American couple went on holiday to Jerusalem. While they were there, the wife passed away. The undertaker explained to the husband that "You can have her shipped home for $5,000 or you can have her buried here in the Holy Land for $150."

The man thought about it and told him that he would just have his wife shipped home.

The undertaker was surprised. He asked the man: "Why would you spend $5,000 to have your wife shipped home when it would be wonderful for her to be buried here and you would spend only $150?"

The husband replied: "Long ago, a man died here, was buried, and three days later he rose from the dead. I can't take that risk."

IT IS NOT PROUD.It does not dishonour others,IT IS NOT SELF-SEEKING,it is not easily angered,
