Encounter Lent, 2017 My Dear Friends in Christ,

You are to be richly commended for participation in the Diocese of Des Moines’

2017 Lenten Series: ENCOUNTER LENT. You are providing a great gift for

yourselves.

The primary goal of this series is to establish a deeper relationship between Jesus

and yourself. This leads to an ever more productive bonding with your fellow

parishioners which guides us to the deeper rooting of our lives in the Church: the

Body of Christ alive in the world today.

I encourage you to devote quality time to your Lenten effort. It will provide abun-

dant dividends for you. Especially do I urge you to enter wholeheartedly into

faith sharing with your group. Over the centuries, this has proven as a highly ef-

fective way to grow in our faith.

This particular series was developed in coordination with Encuentro V, a process

involving our Hispanic brothers and sisters as they move forward in integration

with the American Catholic Church. They do so by contributing riches from their

ecclesial culture and absorbing the dimensions of the dynamic American Church.

I am with each of you in a personal, heartfelt manner in Encounter Lent, 2017. I

am confident that it will be a source of abundant riches for all of us in the Church

of Des Moines.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

The Most Reverend Richard E. Pates

Bishop of Des Moines

Our Lenten Offerings

Our St. Anthony Parishioners are making plans for the com-

could do whatever they can to help with reaching out to

those less fortunate than we are. The three traditional pillars

of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As

part of that observance, and in an effort to witness to our

Catholic faith during this Lenten season, our parish will be

collecting donations for a variety of worthy causes. Posted in

the bulletin each week of Lent will be a charity, along with a

From Msgr. Frank Chiodo

My dear friends in Christ,

With the next week’s retreat I am completing my sabbatical leave. It has been a blessed time,

a time to grieve the loss of my mother, a time to focus on the past—with its successes and fail-

ures, a time to refocus on the future, a time to recognize the swift passage of time. I am here

this weekend, and then to an St Ignatius retreat. Let’s pray for each other.

Lent is fast approaching, We will be offering several opportunities for spiritual growth. Along

with daily Masses, and Friday Stations of the Cross at 5:30pm , we will be have a reflection

session entitled, Encounter Lent. It will be on Tuesdays during lent at 6:30-8pm in the lower

level rectory meeting room. I will be leading the discussion along with Melissa Garcia . Stay tuned to the bulletin for

other opportunities.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the appearances of Mary at Fatima in Portugal. I am planning a pilgrim trip

to Fatima Nov 7-17th this fall. Along with Fatima we will be travelling to Lourdes in France, and to Compostella in

Spain, and Avila Spain—the home of St. Teresa of Avila. More details to come.

There will be a Mass of Healing on Friday, March 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at St Anthony’s celebrated by Fr. Ubald Ru-

girangoga from the Diocese of Cyangugu, Rwanda. Come, bring a friend, and tell others to join us for this special mass

of healing. Fr. Ubald will also pray for others who cannot be there to pray for healing. Jesus is not limited to time and

space. We look forward to seeing you there. Invite your friends and relatives —-who may be suffering from an illness in

body, mind or spirit to come and experience the healing power of the Lord. Many healings have taken place as a result

of his ministry of healing.

I would like to announce the appointment of Caroline Lavorato to the Board of Education. Caroline is an educator

with many years of experience and comes willing to share her experience and expertise with our board. Welcome to

Caroline Lavorato to the Board of Education.
