As kids leave, ask them why they created passports, and how they want to show love to others this week.

Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together.

Connect before you correct! When it becomes necessary to discipline kids because of their behavior, connect with them on a personal level before you correct them. Building relationships with kids is the most important, and effective, part of managing their behavior.

Today we’re hearing about one of Jesus’ most well-known sermons: the Sermon on the Mount! But instead of just focusing on what he said, we’ll focus on what he DID afterward. We’ll see how Jesus met people up close and personal, and gave them the kind of comfort that only God can provide.

Jesus was obsessed with loving others.Matthew 8

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear.

BRIDGES AND RIVERS● Keep kids in one large group for this activity.● Half the kids in the room will be “bridges,” and half the kids will be “rivers.”● Whenever the leader calls out “Bridge!”:

○ All the “bridges” in the room have to make their bodies into arches. (Demonstrate by arching forward and placing your hands on the floor, with space for someone to crawl underneath.)

○ Anyone who is a river then has to crawl under a bridge.● Whenever the leader calls out “River!”:

○ All the “rivers” in the room have to lay down flat on the ground with their hands at their sides (Demonstrate for kids.)

○ Anyone who is a bridge then has to take a giant step over a river.● With a tap on the head, designate each kid as either a “bridge” or a “river” and

briefly remind them what each are supposed to do.● Play music from the KC itunes playlist (if you want) and let kids walk around the

room. Every 10-20 seconds, pause the music and yell either “bridge” or “river,” and let kids respond!

Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

Today is the first lesson of the “Obsessed” Journey! Today’s main point is that Jesus was obsessed with loving others, and he showed it through his actions every day!

Here’s a link to God’s Story / Sermon on the Mount:

*Click to play intro music.● Welcome: Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. We’re so

glad to have you here! I have a question for you. Raise your hand if you want to have a boring life, and not really do anything out of your comfort zone. (Let kids respond.) No? Nobody? Okay, raise your hand if you want to have an adventure-filled life that’s full of amazing surprises?! (Let kids respond.) I agree, I want that life too!

● (Image: Passport) For the next 5 weeks, Kids’ Club and all of Crossroads is going on a journey together. Does anyone know what this picture is? (Let kids answer.)

● Say: It’s a passport, which is a book you have with you if you want to travel around the world! Today we’ll make one of our own, because we’re going to explore this amazing adventure that Jesus wants to take us on. He doesn’t just want us to sit at home and do nothing. He wants us to get out of our comfort zone, and actually change the world!

● Ask: Before we get into that more, what was your favorite part of Connect Time? (Let kids respond.) How did you know when you were supposed to act like a bridge or a river? (Let kids respond.) Yep, when the leader said “Bridge” or “River,” you had to act it out! You didn’t just stand there and do nothing. You did what the leader said!

OBSESSED JOURNEY

Main Goal: Introduce the Journey and how Jesus wants to take us on an amazing adventure!

CONNECT TIME REVIEW

Main Goal: Review Connect Time and actively worship.

OBSESSION: WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Main Goal: Discuss what obsession is, and what it looks like in our own lives.

WHAT ARE YOU OBSESSED WITH?

Main Goal: Do a short activity to get kids thinking about what they’re obsessed with.

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

Main Goal: Show kids where Jesus preached, and help them visualize Galilee.

● Say: Today we’re going to talk about how Jesus spoke to lots of people, but he didn’t want them to just stand there. He wanted them to go out and do what he said, just like you did what your leader said!

● Ask: What do you think Jesus loved to talk about the MOST? (Let kids guess.) Jesus LOVED talking about how to love other people! He was OBSESSED with loving others!

● Ask: What does it mean to be obsessed with something? (Let kids respond.) Yep, it’s when you devote all your energy, time and attention to it! You can’t stop thinking about it, and you talk about it all the time!

● Say: Let’s watch a clip and see what a dog named Dante is obsessed with….

● Video: Coco / Dante’s Lunch● Say: So what was that dog obsessed with?! (Let kids

respond.) Yep, he loved that bone! He chased it all over the place, and all he could think of was eating it!

● Say: Right now, everyone think in your head: What’s something that you’re obsessed with? (Give kids a minute to think). Okay, I need three volunteers to come up and act out something that you’re obsessed with, and the rest of the room will try to guess what you’re doing! (Call on three kids and let them act out while the room guesses.)

● Say: Good job! We ALL love different things. And when we’re obsessed and love something sooo much, we give lots of time and energy to it. We talk about it with others, and we spend lots of time doing it, right?

● Ask: What things do you think Jesus was obsessed with? (Let a few kids answer.) Great answers! Let’s find out as we watch a video about a time Jesus preached to hundreds and hundreds of people on a big hill! Pay attention to what he talks about, AND what he does afterward!

● Video: God’s Story / Sermon on the Mount● Say: After hearing what Jesus talked about on the mount,

and seeing all the things he did for people afterward, what would you say he’s obsessed with? (Let kids respond.) Basically, he was obsessed with loving others.

Page 5: February 17-18, 2018 Obsessed Journey: Sermon on …crossroadskidsclub.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/K2...THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT Main Goal: Show kids where Jesus preached, and help

WHAT WAS JESUS OBSESSED WITH?

Main Goal: Understand why Jesus showed loved, and how he was obsessed with doing it all the time!

WE CAN LOVE LIKE JESUS

Main Goal: Understand that we can change the world by loving others like Jesus did.

MATTHEW 19:26

Main Goal: Learn the verse and do motions to go along with it!

Sign language for “God” https://www.signingsavvy.com/sign/GOD/1409/1

● Say: Jesus spent all his time talking about how to love people, and then he went out and actually showed love in all kinds of ways!

● Say: Remember, Jesus was God’s son. He came here to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world, and one of the ways he did that was by loving people with his words and his actions. He never stopped doing it, no matter how tired he got, or how busy he was. He was obsessed! And it changed the world forever.

● Ask: So if Jesus was obsessed with loving people...do you think WE should be obsessed with loving people too?? (Let kids respond.) Yes! He wants us to love others no matter what!

● Say: Do you think we could change the world by loving others? Yes! But not just by loving sometimes, or when we feel like it. We have to be completely obsessed with it, and spend time and energy on it, just like we do with other things we’re obsessed with.

● Say: Think about it. What if you were as obsessed with loving others as you are with video games, or sports, or art, or music? Do you think you could make a difference? (Let kids respond.) Yes! Let’s check out Kid President, and see what he says about how we can change the world.

● Video: Kid President / How to Change the World● Ask: He had some pretty good advice! We don’t have to be

powerful, or rich, or mean to change all the broken things in the world. We can start with ourselves, right where we are.

● Ask: Do you think we’ll ever come up against things that seem impossible to defeat, or people that seem impossible to love? Yep, we sure will. But that’s no reason to give up. Let’s read a verse about this:

● Slide: Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With people, this is impossible. But with God, all things are possible.

● Say: Let’s do some motions for this verse!● With people (point to different people around you)● This is impossible (cross your arms)● But with God (Bring your hand down across your face, as if

you’re “dividing” it in half; see link)● All things are possible (spread your arms up and out)

Page 6: February 17-18, 2018 Obsessed Journey: Sermon on …crossroadskidsclub.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/K2...THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT Main Goal: Show kids where Jesus preached, and help

RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP

Main Goal: Let kids actively respond to the Holy Spirit. Close the lesson with prayer and worship.

● Say: Good job everyone! Nothing is impossible with Jesus! Now do you remember….what was Jesus obsessed with? (Loving others!) And what should WE be obsessed with too? (Loving others!) Yes!

● Pray: Jesus, we want to be like you. We want to love people no matter what, but we need your help to do it. We trust and love you. Thanks you for meeting us today. Amen!

● Say: I think it’s time to celebrate how much Jesus loves us, what do you think? Let’s stand and sing and dance!

● Music Video: Best of Your Love● Music Video: All That You Need

Dismiss kids to small groups.

Page 7: February 17-18, 2018 Obsessed Journey: Sermon on …crossroadskidsclub.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/K2...THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT Main Goal: Show kids where Jesus preached, and help

Goal: Kids will (1) recognize that Jesus was obsessed with loving people, and (2) identify how we can be obsessed with the same thing!

Why? It’s important to understand that Jesus healed people and performed miracles, not just to fix physical problems, but to help comfort and heal people emotionally as well!

Tip: Kids will need to share staplers, and may need you to demonstrate how to staple the “binding” of the passport book.

REVIEW THE STORY1. What’s one thing you’re obsessed with? What things do you do to show it? 2. What was Jesus obsessed with, and how did HE show it?3. When is hard for you to love people? When is it easy?4. What else do you think Jesus liked to do? (Let kids imagine, anything goes!)5. What are some real ways you can love people this week? Who will you show love

to? What will you do?

MAKE IT PERSONAL● Tell kids we’re going to make passports to tie into how we’re going on a Journey for

the next 5 weeks, and explore how we can have a huge impact on the world as followers of Jesus!

● Give each kid two passport pages: one blue and one white.● Tell kids to layer their two pages:

○ Put the blue page on bottom. Put the white page on top.○ Fold the pages in half to form a “book”.○ Staple twice along the binding (kids will have to take turns).

● Hand out markers, stamps.○ Kids can write their name on the first page of their passport, and draw a

portrait of themselves (if they want).○ On the next page, kids can either draw or write one way they can show love

to someone this week.○ Let kids share the passport stamps and fill their books with stamps!

(Continued on next page.)

MAKE IT PERSONAL● Memorize the verse with motions! Read the verse as a group first: Matthew 19:26

Jesus looked at them and said, “With people, this is impossible. But with God, all things are possible.”

● Now break it up into the following sections, and have kids repeat the words and do the motions. After a few tries, see if they can do it on their own!

○ With people (point to different people around you)○ This is impossible (cross your arms)○ But with God (Bring your hand down across your face, as if you’re

“dividing” it in half; see link)○ All things are possible (spread your arms up and out)
