Trail Talk

Over the years, the phrase, “practice makes perfect”has kind of lost its impact, but it still holds true. We allstrive to improve as riders, but being self-taught has itsdownfalls, and can’t supply all our knowledge. That’swhat makes clinics a great option for any rider who wantsto brush up on their skills, and have an accomplishedhorseman/woman there to help them.

Riverside Recreational Trails is, in fact, hosting aclinic for their upcoming Trail Trials at Graystone Ranch,on the first Saturday and Sunday of May. This is anexcellent opportunity for beginner riders to gain theirconfidence through guided instruction, for intermediateriders to add to their skill set, and for advanced riders toput their skills into practice.

For beginners, riding a horse skillfully is a dauntingtask. What with trying to figure out the differencebetween a cinch and a girth, it can get really confusing.That’s why guided practice in a clinic is so important.You ask the questions you need to, and get the clarityyou need to succeed.

For intermediate riders like myself, you’ve conqueredthe basics, and you’re probably looking to add a littlesomething more advanced to your skillset. Clinics giveyou the chance to do that as well, so that you can get itright the first time. Remember, teaching it wrong is worsethan not teaching it at all. Besides, it’ll add helpful skillsto your repertoire.

Advanced riders are welcome too! You guys are likelylooking for a good place to apply your skills, and thetrails aren’t cutting it. A clinic will challenge your skillsto improve them, and refine your technique, or brushoff some old moves you haven’t used in a while.

Part of being in a clinic is using the opportunity you’rebeing given. The trainer/s are there to help you get better,and improve your techniques. Plus, it’s a nice changeof routine for your horse. Your horse is your teammate,and they will also get a lot out of a clinic.

Greener horses get a chance to be exposed to a “show”environment, with lots of activity buzzing around them,and having to focus solely on their rider. It’s also greatmental stimulation, and will definitely give them a lot

to puzzle over. Horses are curiouscreatures, and they grow in maturityif we give them the chance to exploredifferent obstacles and settings witha no-pressure environment. Anunstressed rider makes a happyunstressed horse.

For more intermediate horses,this is awesome mental stimulation,

and a refresher on old and new skills. They get to beintroduced to new obstacles, and build respect and trustwith their rider. Those founding principles of arelationship will boost your horses confidence, and theywill learn something new.

Advanced horses, the horse you would compete in ashow with, get a brush-up session, and a morestimulating environment than a stall or showring. Givingyour horse something else to do is great for their mentalhealth. A clinic is more like a brush-up than anythingelse for this horse, but they get to have fun.

There’s another essential ingredient only a clinic cangive you. Team bonding! Separately, the horse and ridergrow, but combined, A horse gains more respect for therider, and vice versa. Horses gain experience, and ridersget to learn new things. Horses get enjoyment, and so doriders. A clinic is a space to get better, not to show off.

A clinic has one more great thing to it. You get toexpand your social network. Meeting other people whoshare your passion is just plain exciting, and you get togrow together as riders. You also get to meetprofessionals, and get to know them as well.

Thank you for allowing me to give you a snapshot ofme just after celebrating my 70th birthday. Gives mepause to be thankful for all the good things I have beenblessed with, by wife Diane, our wonderful ranch, herdof horses and cattle, all our home critters and great friend.Could not ask for more!

Here are a few of the segments of my life film that areworth noting for this article.

Diane and I own Graystone Ranch in the Desert ofPhelan. We have lived her for 25 years after being Chinoresidents for 27 years. We are both retired High Schoolteachers.

We have always had driving and riding horses and pres-ently have 11, 5 of which are mini’s and almost everythingwe do revolves around our horses.

Originally we established Graystone Ranch as a DrivingVenue, but over the last several years the ranch hasevolved in to a wonderful trail course with almost 30permanent obstacles. We love the high desert becauseof it’s openness and beauty.

This is a good spot to invite all of you to join us onMay 4th and 5th to RRT’s Clinic and Trail Trial. We areworking hard to make this a fun event for all riders,horses and volunteers alike.

After retiring I started Horseshoe Kreations. It began afterDiane and I started making gifts for our local neighbors toput on their gates at Christmas time. After 5 years Horse-shoe Kreations keeps me busy going to different events.

Pat Knudsen, Cathy & I rode at the Joshua TreeNational Monument on March 17th. Greatweather, tons of flowers & a safe & happy ride.

This last year my Oak Creek Wonder Horse Rodger andI have experienced riding in the San Gabriel Mountains,Black Rock, North of Kennedy Meadows, Los Flores Ranchand most recently 2 days at Joshua Tree National Park.

I see so much of Rodger’s nine years as a native horseseach time we are out. He never puts himself in a badposition on a trail, keeps his head down and doesn’t letwater, rock, brush throw him off, or me! We spent 5 dayin the Eastern Sierra’s at Kennedy Meadows and BlackRock Horse Camp. Rodger and I traveled 60+ miles in 4days with no problems. We have been great trail partnerseven if he tries to rub me off trying to clean himself offon an occasional Juniper. I am so lucky to have such asmart horse. I believe Diane’s new horse Waylen is thesame kind of critter and will treat her well too!

RRT has opened a door to a wonderful group offriends for both Diane and I appreciate the space to sharea little of my life with everyone and hope to seeyou and meet you and your horse on some ofthe trail rides or out a our ranch real soon.

Last month I visited my sister in the beautiful city of Aiken, South Carolina with my niece, Annmarie. I wouldlike to share it with you.

First, let me tell you about Aiden. It is a city of 30,000 people located in western South Carolina, just across thestate line from Augusta, Georgia. It was founded in 1835. In the late 19th century, Aiden gained fame as a winteringspot for wealthy people from the Northeast. The Winter Colony was established by Thomas Hitchcock and WilliamC. Whitney. And these rich, notable, and famous people brought with them their passion for horses in manydifferent areas of equestrian sports.

As a horse lover, the spectrum of equestrian sports in and around Aiken astounds me.It’s a booming equestrian community. It includes thoroughbred race horses, pacers,steeplechase racing, show jumping, fox hunting, dressage, eventing, both under saddleand driving, and trail riding. I’m sure I’m missing some sports.

The centerpiece of equestrian activity in Aiken is Bruce’s Field at the Aiken HorsePark There was a Grad-Prix Eventing show going on the weekend we were there. Spectators

are welcome for a small admission fee. It’s facilities sits upon sixty-six acres ofgrassy field. It includes five all-weather rings, a practice arena, 224 permanentstalls, space for additional temporary stabling, and an administrative building. Thishorse show facility hosts about a dozen events a year and offers premier equestrianfacilities with the charm of an iconic Southern town.

The city of Aiken has the Aiken Training Track next to Bruce’s Field that isused for thoroughbred horses. It is surrounded by training stables that pay anhourly fee for use of the track. I havehad the thrill of touring one of thetraining stables and learned what it takesto produce a great racehorse. Thesestables have produced many championrace horses, such as Kelso.

The McGhees’ Mile Standardbred Races are an annual event held atMcGhees’ Mile race track in Aiken. While we were there, horses were trainingon the track and preparing for the first race of the season, Bruce McGheeMemorial Harness Races. The event is a day of racing, but also includes acarriage parade and a race for miniature horses. The track is used for trainingof Standardbred horses, both trotters and pacers. The mascot of the Universityof Southern Carolina Aiken is the Pacers, named for this sport.

Annemarie and I had to visit the Hall of Fame and spendsome time getting acquainted with Allen’s contribution tothoroughbred racing and steeplechase. The AikenThoroughbred Hall of Fame and Museum is near the AikenTraining Track and displays the area’s rich thoroughbredhistory with memorabilia, photography, and trophies. It isa tribute to the famous flat racing and steeplechaseThoroughbred horses that trained in Aiken.

We didn’t have a chance to visit any of the polo fields,but they are worth mentioning. The Aiken Polo Club isone of the oldest and most historic polo clubs in the UnitedStates. The club held its first game on Whitney Field in1882. It became the winter playground to many ofAmerica’s top polo players. There are dozens of polo fieldsin and around Aiken. That’s on my list for a future visit.

While we were touring Aiken, we saw a fox hunting group that had just finished at Hitchcock Woods. AikenHounds is a Fox hunting club that was established in 1914 by the Hitchcocks of Long Island. They purchasedHitchcock Woods, 3,000 acres of woodlands and fields where Mrs. Hitchcock hunted a pack of beagles and Mr.Hitchcock schooled his steeplechasers. It’s now a park and fox hunts and other equestrian activities continue theretoday. Bridle trails from surrounding areas connect with those woods.

We didn’t get to enjoy a Steeplechase while we were there, but the steeplechase races are a huge social event.The Aiken Steeplechase Association, founded in 1930, hosts the Imperial Cup each March and the Holiday Cup inOctober at Bruce’s Field, both of which are steeplechase races sanctioned by the National Association.

As we make our way to the historic downtown to shop and dine, we pass Bruce’s Field, the Aiken TrainingTrack, Powderhouse Polo fields, hoof-friendly clay roads, and historic winter colony homes (mansions) and stables.Largely unchanged over the last century, these are the sights of a unique way of living, preserved in the heart of acharming Southern town.

In closing I need to say that there is much more about Aiken then the horses. It has a thriving diverse culturehat includes dining, theater, music, education and more, all in the tradition of warm Southern hospitality.

The meeting was called to order at JoJo’s Pizza at 7:30pm by PresidentElana Riedel. We had 20 people present. Secretary Diane verified we hada quorum. Minutes were approved on a motion by Wayne Pitzler secondedby Gene Stauffer. Member Becky Hageman’s husband, Tim, joined usalong with Jim Edgar who we had not been seen for awhile.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Elana reported the paperwork for Hidden Valleyfor the Prize Ride has been approved.

VICE PRESIDENT: Lisa Murphy... was absent.

SECRETARY: Diane Pitzler... no report.

TREASURER: Gene Stauffer... Gene reported as of 2/28/19, RRT accountbalance, after donations and expenses is $8,351.85. This includes ourreserve fund of $3,500.00. Expenses for the month included website hostingand domain registry, bank service fee, printing for the newsletter and othercommunications, totaling $311.11. No income for the month was recorded.

HISTORIAN / NEWSLETTER: Diana Thorpe... Shared a letter ofappreciation for our donation from The Ventura Humane Society.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS: Wayne Pitzler... Upcoming Clinic & Trail Trialat Gray Stone Ranch is progressing nicely.

There is also a possible trail project available if Back Country Horsemanof Norco are no longer interested. 1500 acres east of the truck scales onHwy 138 and the 15 freeway. More on this later.

Coming up the last weekend of March is BCH’s Rendezvous in Norco.Trail Cooridnator Kimberlie Hall added that entry and parking forRendezvous is free to attend.

TRAIL COORDINATOR: Kimberlie Hall... The Box Springs ride is set forMarch 24th. Get in contact with Gene or Helma. The Stagecoach Trailsride, an open ride in Julian, Kimberlie will pre-ride. If interested in goingon this ride, talk to Kimberlie by April 10th.

The RRT Clinic and Trail Trial, may 4-5th, needs volunteers and riders.Entries close on April 8th. See Diane Pitzler if you are interested in ridingin the Clinic or Show, or if you can volunteer. Volunteers get lunch and aT-Shirt. RRT member can volunteer and participate too!

The upcoming Chino Hills ride will be staged from the Brea side, but withall the rain it is still closed. The ride will re-schedule, contact Helma.

Fran, owner of Thrifty Horse, has a stable across from the entrance tothe Brea Park. She has volunteered to provide a club ride with a BBQ.More info to come when park re-opens.

Jim Edgar said, Gavilan Hills is covered with wild Poppies and flowers.

An alternative date is needed for our planned Sweetwater Campover inBonita (campsite full). More on this next month.

NEW BUSINESS: Gene commented that Helma’s phone number is wrongfor the Hidden Springs Ride. He suggested we distribute a membershiplist of members. Elana added that this could be done annually, perhapsat the time of the Prize Ride. Diana Thorpe said that the list is usuallythree pages long. Becky suggested the member list be on the website.Kris said robo calls could come from the listing. He also thought memberscould pick up list at the Prize Ride. Gene added there could be anotherproblem with putting the list on the website. Others have been suedbecause of ADA compliance laws for vision assistance. Elana thought a listcould be sent out now and again in September. No motion at this time.

Kimberlie reported that Mike’s Auction is selling tack sale space for $20.00for the second Saturday of the month.

BRAG FOR A BUCK: Gene bragged on him and Susan, they competedat a recent Saddle and Harness Show. She captured two blue ribbonsand two third places. Gene got two fourth place ribbins.

Terri McCluskey bragged on her two year old mustang, Trinity. She hasponied him twice on the trail with her mare and the two year old mustangdid really well.

Megan bragged that her mother, Annemarie’s birthday is tomorrow.Kimberlie has had eye surgeries and has just been released by the doctor,so that she can now lift more than five pounds.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45pm on a motion by Craig.

RRT Board Meeting for March 2019The Meeting was called to order at 8:50pm. Present were Elana, Bill,Craig, Diana, Gene, Susan, Diane, Wayne, Terri, and Kris.

Diana Thorpe would like to see the club’s website actively brought up todate each month.

Kris said, the bylaws require the website wrangler to attend meetings...she cannot miss three conservative meetings in a row.

Kris also brought up that if we sold used tack at Mike’s Auction, asdiscussed tat the meeting, we could as a club, face product liabilityproblems. Our insurance company should be contacted on this. Dianaadded that we were told ten year ago we couldn’t sell used tack as aFundraiser - plus we would have to pay sales tax on it.

The meeting adjourned at 9:04pm on a motion by Kris.

DIRECTIONS:From Riverside take the I-10 toward Yucca Valley/PalmSprings to CA-62. Merge onto CA-62 (Exit 117) towardYuccal Valley to 29 Palms Hwy.Turn right onto Sage Ave., then turn left to Yucca Trail,turn right to Joshua Lane, keep to the left. Turn right toSan Marino Dr., First left to Black Rock Canyon Rd.,turn right onto Park Rd. an unpaved road into the Park.

Have fun riding and hiking with your fellow RRT friends at Black Rock Horse Camp in YuccaValley. Black Rock Campground lies among one of the thickest Joshua tree forests in JoshuaTree National Park. Black Rock is open on a first-come, first-serve basis. Travelers who enjoywarm, dry winters flock to Joshua Tree from October through May, to see the flowers whentemperatures are between 70 to 90 degrees during the day and drop anywhere between 40 to 60degrees at night. Black Rock is at an elevation of 4,000 feet and has a mix of both sun and shade.

The facility is convenient for RV camping, complete with flush toilets anda dump station. There are no hookups. Black Rock is one of two campgroundsin the national park that provides drinking water. There are equestriancampsites and miles of riding trails.

We will have a group ride on Saturday,leaving at 10:00am. The ride should be from3-4 hours. If anyone can’t do a 4 hour ridedon’t worry, we can change the route asneeded to make all the riders happy withthe length of a ride they can handle.

If you would like to come for the day andjoin us for the Saturday group ride, you will able to park in theEquestrian Parking Area. This is a huge parking area with lots ofroom for your truck and trailer.

This will be a 4 hour ride. We will start out together riding the canyon.The area is very flat and easy. There are 3-4 water crossings. When we getto the 4-corners we will stop at the picnic table and have lunch (bring yourown). There is a port-a-potty at this location but no water.

After lunch we will split up. Whoever wants to go on a trail that meandersup through the hills can do so. Some of the trail is on the side of the hill,but nothing difficult for the horses. Whoever wants to take the canyon trailback to the staging area can do so. Please be aware that there are bicyclists,runners, hikers and families on the main trail so please be considerate aswe go by.

DIRECTIONS: A very nice and easy drive. About 2½ hours towing horses. Approx. 102 miles from Norco. Take 15 Fwy.South to San Diego, go 10 miles SE of San Diego to the 805 Fwy. South. Exit Bonita Rd. (Exit 7C), go East throughtown (approx. 4½ miles straight ahead) to Sweetwater Park. Bonita Rd. turns into San Miguel Rd. DON’T TURN TOTHE LEFT OVER THE BRIDGE AT THE SIGNAL, GO STRAIGHT UP THE HILL through the residential areaon San Miguel Rd. to Summit Meadow Rd. Look for Sweetwater sign & gate on your left.

Campsites: 1 camping rig, 1 extra vehicle, 1 horse trailer, corrals,2 horses and up to 8 people per site. Plenty of room for extra horses(30 overflow corrals) at $1.00 per day. Tents allowed on camp siteonly, not on grass. All sites have water, electric hookup, table andfire ring, you can bring firewood or charcoal for cooking outside.Full restrooms, showers (bring your quarters) and dump station.

Gates open all night. Dogs allowed, on leash only.No stallions or dogs on trail ride please.

You will have two beautiful ladies’ for your Trail Bosses. Saturday the 23rd, we will have an organizedtrail ride on nice and easy trails along the Sweetwater Reservoir and through rolling hills. The ride will

leave at 10:00am. Sunday for those memberswho feel comfortable riding under and overthe freeway, we will leave at 10:00am andbe riding the trails around the golf course.The Sweetwater Camp is about 2 miles frommarkets, shopping and restaurants. If youwould like to visit Tijuana, Mexico it is onlyabout 25 minutes from the park. If you wouldlike to go to Border Beach State Park it isabout 15 miles south of the park.
