FREEDOM AND PRIVACY In 1948 the free world was shocked by the trial of József Cardinal Mindszenty. The man who had valiantly with-stood Nazi and communist oppression in his native Hungary pleaded guilty to the charges of treason brought against him by the communist regime. But he was clearly a broken man. Somehow that brave, independent spirit had been overcome, but only at the cost of destroying the person. To invade the per-sonal center of another human being is the ultimate act of vio-lence. Each individual has a privacy that is his or hers and that cannot rightly be invaded. No human being may take away that privacy from another. Privacy is not just something to be enjoyed. Privacy means more than the right to unplug the telephone and shut the door and not be bothered by anybody. The other side of the coin, however, is our personal responsibility for our life. PASTOR’S NOTE February 9, 2020 CALLED TO HOLINESS

Today I would like to begin sharing my reflection on the third Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis. It is entitled’ GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE”. In English it literally means: Rejoice and Be Glad. This passage is taken from the Gospel of St. Matthew 5:12. It was published from the eternal city of Rome last April 9, 2018. The subtitle of this document is “ON THE CALL TO HOLINESS.” Basically the document touches on the fundamental aspect in the life of every follower of JESUS. It is on the call to holiness. One of the outputs of the Second Vatican Council is the document: LUMEN GENTIUM. In English it is titled as the Dogmatic Constitution in the Church. In paragraph 2 of this sad document we read this pas-sage. “Since the church is, in Christ, is in the nature of sacrament – a sign and instrument, that us , of communion with God and of unity among all men.”—He determined to call together in a holy Church those who should believe in Christ. By baptism a person is united to Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism and thus becomes a member of the mystical body of Christ. Such membership obliges one to live in holiness. Therefore, Chapter V of this dogmatic constitution on the Church is aptly entitled the Universal Call. “Therefore all in the Church, whether they belong to the hierarchy or are cared for by it, are CALLED TO HOLINESS, (emphasis mine) according to the apostle’s saying: For this is the will of God, your sanctification (1 Th. 4:3, Eph 1:4)
