The Quarantine of LentDuring the fi rst decade of the American

space program, it was common to quar-antine the astronauts upon their return to earth. The reason was simple: no one wanted to risk an unnecessary contami-nation. It was because of such fears that entire ships used to be quarantined. The last thing people on shore wanted was for some highly contagious disease to spread to the general population.

Given our familiarity with the word “quarantine,” it might come as a sur-prise to learn that the fi rst defi nition given in most dictionaries is that a quarantine is a period of forty days. Even more intriguing is the fact that in the early centuries of the church, the forty-day period before Easter – now known as Lent – was called a quarantine.

Would there be any benefi t to incorporate the concept of a quaran-tine into our Lenten observance?

The Disease: “Sin”In the Augsburg Confession, origi-

nal sin is described as a disease. Indeed, there is no more widespread disease in the whole world. Sin

permeates not only the world around us but also our lives and our very being.

Some people believe that they can avoid, or at least lessen, the contagion of sin by separating themselves from the world. In a sense, they establish a quarantine. The problem with such thinking, Jesus says, is that evil proceeds from the heart (Matthew 15:19). It’s impossible to avoid the effects of sin and evil. We are all infected; and, the disease is terminal!

The Cure: “Jesus”“God so loved the world that He gave

His one and only Son” (John 3:16). These familiar words say it well. God in His boundless mercy gave His dearest treasure that we might have life. Though sin and evil will plague us until our dying breath, we know that on account of Christ, our sin is not held against us. In Christ – we are forgiven and free!

The Renewal Of LentThe Season of Lent is a very special time

for God’s people. As we journey through the Lenten Season and prepare for Holy Week and Easter, we are reminded of the great cost of God’s gift of life.

But Lent was never intended to be a forty-day Good Friday. While the suffer-ing and death of Jesus are certainly in our thoughts during the days of Lent, there’s

another theme that has shaped the observance of Lent through the years. It is the theme of repentance and renewal!

In the early centuries of the Church’s history, the weeks before Easter were a very special time for the preparation and formation of new converts who were to be bap-tized at the Easter Vigil. For those already in the Church, it was a time of repentance and renewal.

And so it can be for us. As our sin is diagnosed by God’s Law, there’s no need to set up a quarantine. Rather, we rejoice in the free gift of God that is in Christ Jesus, our Savior and Substitute. Renewed by His gift of life, we joyfully live out our daily calling, by serving our neigh-

bor and by letting the light of Christ shine in us and through us!

I pray that the Holy Spirit is able to move each of you to take the time to worship during the Lenten Season and renew your heart and life in Jesus Christ – the Savior of the world! The Lenten Season begins with Ash Wednesday on February 13, 2013, with worship beginning at 6:00 p.m.! God bless your Lenten observance with repentance and renewal.

Lenten Sermon Series “A Copy and a Shadow of What is in Heaven!”

In the 2013 Lenten season, I would like to take you on a journey that leads us all the way back in the Old Testament – to when the Children of Israel were out in the wilderness for forty years, worshiping God before the (Old Testament) Tabernacle. The theme verse is from Hebrews 8:5, which says: They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.

In this Lenten Journey, we are going to view (recreate) the Tabernacle and its furnishings and study the link with them to the New Testament and our Lord Jesus Christ! In studying the Old Testament Tabernacle, we will notice that its divine pattern, priesthood and sacrifi ces not only foreshadowed Jesus Christ, His Person and Work, but also provide the background for the Four Gospels. (In the six weeks of Lent and in Holy Week – we will see the furnishings of the Old Testament Tabernacle Wor-ship System come alive before us! We will also see replicas of what the Tabernacle might have looked like and their signifi cance.)

Installation Set for Sunday, February 17 at 4:00 p.m.

Holy Cross is celebrating the blessings of God in receiving a new Associate Pastor, Rev. Dustin Lappe, coming from Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Aurora, CO. Lenten Wednesday Night Schedule(No FaithWeavers until April 3)The 2013 Lenten Season is approaching and Ash

Holy Week Seder (Passover) MealHoly Week – 2013 – Holy

Cross will give members the opportunity to observe and celebrate the Seder (Pass-over) Meal, on Wednesday evening of Holy Week, March 27, at 6:00 p.m.

Jesus and His disciples shared the Passover meal the night before He died. This year, that ceremony will add depth and meaning to our Holy Week and Easter celebra-tion!

Passover! The mere thought of this joyous Festival of Redemption delights the soul, both Jewish and Gentile. Each spring, Jewish men, women and children prepare their hearts and their homes in anticipation of the holiday. It is a feast of remembrance, a time to thank God for His deliverance of the ancient Israelites from Egyptian bondage. For Jewish and Gentile believers, who know the true Redeemer of Israel – the Messiah Jesus – Passover has added signifi cance. It is a time of gratitude for God’s total redemption and deliverance of mankind from the bondage of sin.

In the Passover Meal, we will use what is called the Haggadah, which is the Hebrew word used to describe the booklet that sets forth and explains the Passover seder. The word seder is Hebrew for “set order” or “service.” This meal provides an opportunity for us as Lutheran Christians to better understand our Old Testament heritage.

The meal will consist of Wine (four small glass-es for each adult, and grape juice for children), Green Vegetable, Hard Boiled Egg, Unleavened Bread, Bitter Herbs, Charoset, (mixture of apples, nuts, honey and cinnamon), Lentil Soup, Roasted Lamb (and another meat), Baked Potato, Green Beans, Pound Cake, Coffee.

Members of Holy Cross need to sign up to be able to attend the Seder Meal – so we know how many to prepare for, and don’t have too many sign up for our Friendship Hall to handle. Reser-vations will be needed so we know how many to prepare for. The sign up sheet will be at the Min-istry Center beginning Ash Wednesday (February 13) and will remain until we have 150 participants. Participating in the Seder Meal will make the Lord’s Supper more meaningful the following night at the Maundy Thursday worship service. (A free-will offering will be taken to help defray the costs of the meal.)

Lappe Moving Plans Set for February 11 - 13

Pastor Lappe has accepted our congregation’s offer to move his family to Kearney using U-Haul

vehicles. We are in need of a few volunteers who would be willing to travel to Aurora, Colorado, and help pack the trucks. The current plan is to travel to Aurora on the afternoon of February 11 and load trucks on February 12. We also need volun-teers to help unload the trucks on the afternoon of February 13, in Kearney. If you are interested in helping either in Aurora or Kearney, please contact Jerry Gloystein (234-9702) or the church offi ce.

2013 Souper Bowl of Caring Begins February 3

It is almost Super Bowl time, and we are asking you to help tackle hunger in Buffalo County. The Holy Cross Youth Groups and Lutheran Women in Mission members are teaming together to sponsor a food drive. Canned foods and nonper-ishable items can be placed in the shopping cart near the offi ce anytime during February. We have set our goal at 1,000 items which will be delivered to the Safe Center, Jubilee Center and Salvation Army. Deliveries will be made each week in Feb-ruary. We encourage you to be a part of our team effort by sharing God’s love with those in need.

Thank You from Food for the Poor

On behalf of the many destitute people living in Island Nations in the Caribbean and poor na-tions in Central America, please accept their deep thanks and gratitude for the generous support you have provided to the ministry of Food for the Poor, especially for continual support by those donors who send gifts on a regular basis.

Gifts are most urgent now to help us maintain the many ministries in other countries as we remain the major relief organization in Haiti and will continue providing resources to the people as we are able. By the power of God’s grace, we are making progress, one person and one child at a time.

If there are some individuals or a group from the church who have an interest in spending some time serving on a mission trip, please contact the Food for the Poor website for more information at www.foodforthepoor.org. We have a special department which organizes and guides groups in planning their mission trips. Perhaps members of the congregation would be able to participate in a special project, like building a house or supplying needs for a fi shing village or tilapia pond.

Thank you for your kind and gracious hospital-ity and response to the message of this beggar and your care and concern for “the least of these, my disciples.”

Pastor Lappe Welcome Gift We would like to offer members of the congre-

gation the opportunity to give a welcome gift to Pastor Lappe and his family. We plan to collect a door offering on Sunday, February 3. Our gifts will go toward the purchase of stoles that Pas-tor will wear in worship. Any excess funds will be used for expenses associated with the Lappe family’s move to their new home. Please consider a generous gift to the Lappe family.

Greeters and Ministry Center Volunteers

Greeters serve as our “fi rst impression” at Holy Cross, providing smiles and warm wishes to visitors, letting them know we are glad they are here! If you have a warm, inviting personality and would love to welcome members and visitors as they enter our doors, greeting is for you. You can “take a door” on your own, or make it a family affair!

Ministry Center Volunteers “man” the Ministry Center – pointing people in the right direction should they have questions or helping them sign up for classes should they so desire. You don’t have to know every-thing that is going on at Holy Cross, just a willingness to help others fi nd the answers they need.

If you are interested in either of these volunteer opportunities, or have ques-tions about them, please contact Michelle Bombeck at 224-4616 or [email protected].

“Living, Growing, Maturing, Caring”

Life Groups The mission of Life Groups at Holy Cross:

For all to have a living, growing, maturing and caring relationship with Jesus Christ and with one another.

What is a Life Group?Life Groups are a fellowship of 6 to 12 people who gather outside of the church to study God’s Word, pray, serve, have FUN and share their faith journeys with others.

Is this another Bible study? No. The purpose of a Life Group at Holy Cross is to live in Biblical community with fellow believers, grow and mature in our faith by building authentic relationships with others and caring for people both inside and outside of God’s church. Life Groups are about studying God’s Word, yes, but they are also about having fun together, caring for each other and sharing our lives and faith!

How often do we meet?We encourage Holy Cross Life Groups to meet twice-monthly from September through May. However, the frequency of getting together is up to the Life Group!

How long will we be in this group? Multiplication of Life Groups takes place two years after the group begins.

Confidentiality is an essential part of each Life Group. “What is said in the group, stays in the group.” Godwants to us to be in relationships with others that are grounded in faith and which strengthen our connection to Him.

We all need Life Groups! God did not make us to live our lives alone!

By sharing our lives and our faith with others, we are doing the very thing God called us to do: Love Him and Love our Neighbor.

Interested? Don’t wait to sign up!

YRTC Thank youWords are never enough to express my

thanks to the people of this wonderful con-gregation. Our third YRTC Christmas cookie ministry was a wonderful event this year. We were able to put a smile on many a young man's face that day and we also participated in spreading the love and message of Christ.

We had such an abundant amount of cookie plates that we were also able to serve the residents of the CrossRoads Shelter. The members of this wonderful Church never cease to amaze me on how they can pull together and make an event turn into a success. Many, many thanks to the people who graciously donated their time and talents in baking, transporting, and reaching out to minister to these young men.

Gratefully, Kim Sheldon
