Voskrese! Voistinu voskrese!) Translated: Christ is Risen! He
is Risen Indeed. Sts. Cyril and Methodius received permission to translate the Liturgy into the language of the people...Moravian. But because this meant the German clergy would no longer have control over the Church by saying the mass only in Greek or Latin, the two saints experienced great difficulties. This was over 1200 years ago.
18 Days: It’s only that long before we begin the great season of Fasting and Penance: LENT. It’s not too soon to plan on how you will make LENT a good 40 Days. —Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday of Lent at 7:00 pm. Confessions are heard before hand: 6:00-6:45 pm. The Grade School will pray the Stations each week at 3:00 pm on Fridays. If there is a First Friday then the Stations will be part of the Closing Service for First Friday. —Confessions: 6:00-6:45 pm on Fridays, except Good Friday; 7:00-7:30 on all Wednesdays. Other times to be set up later on in the season. —Theology on Tap: 7:30 pm on Fridays in Lent...Place to be determined.
What is a Mission?: Its a Parish Retreat. We get some good spiritual input, some time to pray together and sometime to pray privately. We are all on a journey but it’s necessary to stop and notice the scenery, look back over where we have come from and where we are headed. The Parish Mission will encom-pass three things: 40 Hours Eucharistic Exposition; Evening Ses-sions with talks by visiting clergy; Eucharistic Miracles Exhibition.
I’d like to talk about 40 Hours. St. Charles Borromeo speaks as if this practice of praying for forty hours was very ancient; and he relates it to the forty hours that Christ's Body remained in the tomb. The number 40 is also associated with the rain at the time of the flood of Noah lasting 40 days and nights, the Hebrews wandering in the desert for 40 years on the way to the Promised Land, and Jesus fasting for 40 days before beginning his public ministry. So the number 40 has deep significance. Our 40 Hours maintains the title but not the hours, technically because our devotion runs 56+ hours: From 11:30 am on Sunday to 8:00 pm on Tuesday. Saints who were associated with promoting this devotion were: St. Philip Neri, St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Francis de Sales and St. John Neumann. St. John is credited with bringing the devotion to the United States. In his diocese of Philadelphia he set up a schedule such that 40 hours was running virtually continuously throughout his diocese. As one 40 hours was end-ing in one church it began in another. Years ago this was the case in most diocese. I promote this devotion because of the need to support the doctrine of and belief in the Real Presence during a time of when many Catholics fail at this belief. In addi-tion, the evening sessions include the Church’s rich practice of praying and chanting the Liturgy of the Hours; in this case the Hour called Vespers.
Take it home: After a weekend numerous bulletins are left in the church book racks. It may be convenient for you to take a bulletin and read it before mass but it is not convenient for those who volunteer to keep the church in order. Please take your bulletin home. Care for the Music Books: Please help preserve these. Make sure ONE cover, the BACK cover of the music book, is tucked in all the way into the maroon folder. Please place the book back into the bookrack closed and upright. Thanks....Again another way to help pro-vide hospitality to the next dweller of the pew for the next service.
Clergy Conference: I will be a the Clergy Conference in Schuyler Monday and Tuesday. There WILL be a mass on Monday at 8:05 am at which the GS will attend. There will be NO mass on 8:05 am on Tuesday but there WILL be a mass at 1:30 pm for Cedar HS.

These two saints were responsible for bringing Christianity to the Slavic Nations, in particular Moravia...hence the connection to my Czech ancestry. Cedar Catholic Board Meeting: This Thurs-day in the Library. Pastoral Council: We will meet again on Thursday the 23rd at 6:30 pm Ash Wednesday Schedule: 1) Mass at 8:05 am. 2) Liturgy of the Word and Distribution of Ashes at 12:00 Noon (not a mass) 3) Mass at 7:00 pm. Communion and ashes will be brought to the residents at Harting-ton Care and Rehab during the day. Just So You Know: I have been given per-mission for us to have a Saturday evening mass at 4:00 pm the weekend of the GALA: March 25. Confessions will be from 2:30-3:30 pm. There will be no 5:30 pm mass. Moving Along: The carpeting is in. As soon as the winter begins to fade we will be shampooing the whole church carpet and then I think it will blend even better. The kneelers are being built and once they are finished (will have to wait until upholstery is done on the kneel part) then the whole ado-ration area will settle into a spot. Right now the chairs are about 2-3 feet away from where you used to sit. A heater will accom-pany the space to help if it gets chilly. Right now the space for communion is fantastic and the folks in wheel chairs don’t have to feel like they are in the way. Donations are welcome
Paul tells us, "eat it to our malediction." Only believ-
ers can benefit from this Bread of Life, only believers
can profit from the Blessed Sacrament, and only believ-
ers can grow in spirit by partaking of the Eucharist de-
pending always on the measure of their faith. Those
who believe deeply in the Real Presence will benefit
greatly from the Real Presence; those who believe
weakly will also benefit accordingly. The Eucharist is
capable of working miracles in our lives. So it can –
after all, the Eucharist is Jesus. He worked – change the
tense – He works miracles, but as it depended then
(remember, Christ could not work miracles in certain
places for lack of faith), the same now. It depends on the
depth and degree of our faith.

The Eucharist as the Real Presence is the touchstone of
sanctity. As evidence of this fact we have the witness of
the saints who, when they speak or write about the
power of the Blessed Sacrament to sanctify, seem to be
positively extreme in their claims about what the Real
Presence can achieve in making a sinful person holy.
In order to appreciate the value of the Real Presence in
the spiritual life, we must go back in spirit to the event
described by St. John when our Lord, after He had
worked the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves
and fishes, made the solemn promise of the Eucharist.
"I am the Bread of Life," Christ declared on that
occasion. "He who comes to me will never be hungry.
He who believes in me will never thirst. But, as I have
told you, you can see me and still you do not believe.
All that the Father gives me will come to me and who-
ever comes to me, I shall not turn him away because I
have come down from heaven, not to do my own will,
but to do the will of the one who sent me. Now the will
of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of all
that he has given to me and that I should raise it up on
the last day. Yes, it is my Father's will that whoever sees
the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life and
that I shall raise him up on the last day."
The Eucharistic Miracles of
the World
The Real Presence
Those who believe will receive this life. Those who do
not believe will die. What kind of life was Christ talking
about? It must have been the supernatural life of grace
in our souls, of partaking or participation in His own
divine life.
This, in homely
language, is what the
Savior promised those
who believed in His
Real Presence. He
assured them and,
therefore, assures us,
that we shall be not
only alive, but filled
with His life, full to
brimming and flow-
ing over with strength
and power and wisdom and peace and all manner of
holiness. This is what sanctity is all about. It is the
muchness of the good things of God. It is the more and
more and still more of the life of God in our souls. More
still, He promises that, provided that we believe in Him
in the Eucharist, He will sustain this life in our souls
into eternity. In other words, being alive now we shall
never die. And most marvelous, He will even make this
life pour from our souls into our bodies risen from the
grave on the last day and glorified by the vision of God.
No wonder the Eucharist is called panis vitae, the Bread
of Life. It is that, and let us remind ourselves, and here
is the condition, one condition, that before we eat
this bread with our lips, we take it by faith into our
hearts. Indeed, unless we first have faith, we shall, as

perfectly answers the first question we are asking.
"What do I believe when I believe in the Real
Presence?" The prayer goes as follows, a little long, but
worth it:
"I believe and I will confess to my last breath that this is the living
bread which Your only-begotten Son, our Lord and God and Savior,
Jesus Christ, took from our Lady and the Queen of Mankind, the holy,
sinless Virgin Mary, Mother of God. He made it one with His Godhead
without confusion or change. He witnessed before Pontius Pilate and
was of His own free will condemned in our place to the holy tree. Truly
I believe that His Godhead was not separated from His manhood for a
moment, not even for the twinkle of an eye. He gave His body for the
remission of our sins and for eternal life to those who partake of this
body. I believe, I believe, I believe that this is in very truth that body.
Amen."
That is your faith and
mine.
But why do we believe
in terms of the
promises He made?
What blessings and
benefits did He assure
those who believe in
t h i s E u c h a r i s t i c
Mystery? All the
blessings that Christ promised to those who believe in
the Holy Eucharist are summed up in His own masterful
promise of life. Those who believe will receive life and
the life that He promised was zoé – the kind of life that
belongs to God, the kind of life that Father, Son and
Holy Spirit shared and interchanged from all eternity.
By now we have read and heard and meditated on these
words many times, but they deserve further reflection
because they contain so much mystery that after
nineteen centuries of the Church's existence she has not
begun to exhaust the richness of their meaning.
Every time we go back, every time we go back to
Christ's words of revelation, we always discover
something new. Always! The key word in Christ's
discourse on the Eucharist is the word believe.
On the answer to what do we believe depends in large
measure whether we shall only know about sanctity or
also attain it, whether holiness will remain only an idea
or whether we shall actually become holy. What a
difference!
The simplest way to express what Christ asks us to
believe about the Real Presence is that the Eucharist is
really He. The Real Presence is the real Jesus. We are to
believe that the Eucharist began in the womb of the
Virgin Mary; that the flesh which the Son of God
received from His Mother at the Incarnation is the same
flesh into which He changed bread at the Last Supper;
that the blood He received from His Mother is the same
blood into which He changed wine at the Last Supper.
Had she not given Him His flesh and blood there could
not be a Eucharist.
We are to believe that the Eucharist is Jesus Christ –
simply, without qualification. It is God become man in
the fullness of His divine nature, in the fullness of His
human nature, in the fullness of His body and soul, in
the fullness of everything that makes Jesus Jesus. He is
in the Eucharist with His human mind and will united
with the Divinity, with His hands and feet, His face and
features, with His eyes and lips and ears and nostrils,
with His affections and emotions and, with emphasis,
with His living, pulsating, physical Sacred Heart. That is
what our Catholic Faith demands of us that we believe.
If we believe this, we are Catholic. If we do not, we are
not, no matter what people may think we are.
Our faith is belief because we do not see what we
believe. We accept on Christ's words that all of this is
there, or rather, here in the Holy Eucharist. Faith must
supply what, as the Tantum Ergo sings, "the senses do
not perceive." And faith must reveal what the mind by
itself cannot see. Let us never forget this phrase, first in
Latin, lumen fidei, the light of faith. Faith reveals, faith
discloses, faith enlightens, faith empowers the mind to
see what the mind without faith cannot see.
Strange as it may sound, when we believe in the Real
Presence, we believe in things twice unseen. We see
only what looks like bread and wine, tastes and smells
like bread and wine, and yet we are to believe that
behind these physical appearances is a man. Faith
number one. And we are further to believe that behind
the unseen man is God. Faith number two.
Is it any wonder the Church calls the
Eucharist, Mysterium Fidei, the Mystery
of Faith? Those who accept the Real
Presence accept by implication all the cardinal mysteries
of Christianity. They believe in the Trinity, in the Father
who sent the Son and in the Son who sent the Holy
Spirit. They believe in the Incarnation, that the Son of
God became man like one of us. They believe in Christ's
divinity since no one but God could change bread and
wine into His own body and blood. They believe in the
Holy Catholic Church which Christ founded and in
which through successive generations is communicated
to bishops and priests the incredible power of making
Christ continually present among us in the Blessed
Sacrament. They believe, against all the betrayals by the
Judases of history and all the skepticism of Christ's first
disciples, in an unbroken chain of faith ever since Peter
replied to Christ's question whether he and his
companions also wanted to leave the Master. What a
chance Christ took. "Lord," Peter looked around, "whom
shall we go to?" (And he spoke for all of us.)" You have
the message of eternal life, and we believe, we know,
that you are the holy one of God."

Advance Gala Tickets on sale now for a $30 donation per person til Monday evening, March 13, 2017. Tickets
purchased Tuesday, March 14 and later will be a $35 donation per person. Gala goers will need an event ticket for
any part or the entire event. This is an Adult only (college-age and older) event.
Deliver or call in grain donations at the Hartington Elevator, Fordyce Coop or Hartington
Feed & Chick. The Grain Auction is a large part of the Grand Auction. Your generosity of grain or
cash helps tremendously. Many more donations are needed.
Confirm your auction gifts to an Auction Committee Member or the Catholic Development
Office as soon as possible. Gift descriptions are needed immediately. The Gala book pages and
auction list is being composed now.
Encourage other friends to attend and enjoy the Gala event. Plan to bring friends and get
tickets for them before tickets are sold out. Reserve tables are available to assure your dinner
party sitting together.
Get your Gala Raffle Tickets to help students reach their class goals and for you to
Win! $700 Groceries, a 43” Smart T.V., $500 of Gas or $300 cash. If you have not
purchased a ticket, contact a 4th, 5th or 6th grader from East Catholic, West Catholic, Holy
Trinity Elementary Schools or Cedar Catholic Jr. - Sr. High School. Thank you to Steffen Drug/
Matt & Brenda Steffen for sponsoring the Gala raffle. Help students reach a mid-contest incentive
of selling the most over their class goal by Valentine’s Day for cookies or soda’s.

Perpetual Adoration FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
If I elect to participate, can I change my mind? Yes, just call the parish office and request to be removed from the schedule. We will
advertise your time slot as being open for someone else to take.
Do I have to stay for a second hour if the next person fails to show up? No, you are not responsible for covering others’ hours unless you choose to do so. Only
when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar (e.g., as on First Fridays) must
someone continuously be present to attend to the Lord.
What if the weather is bad or I am sick?
No one is expected to endanger their lives or their health to keep his or her hour of
prayer in church. If it is possible to find a substitute, you may do so.
What if I want to change days/times? Call the parish office to request a change of day and time. As soon as there is an
opening, those on the waiting list will have the opportunity first to fill it.
What do I do when other things are happening in church?
If a liturgy or devotion is taking place (e.g., Mass, Weddings, Baptisms, Stations, etc.), you
should participate in it. If some other activity is happening (e.g., cleaning, rehearsals,
etc.), you should maintain your adoration of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
What do I do for an hour in church? How each person structures his or her prayer is a personal choice. Some read Scripture,
pray the Rosary, make the Stations, meditate, read a devotional/spiritual book, or just
talk to God in one’s own words. Some days will be easier than others. You must develop
your own rhythm.
Are there resources to help me pray? Yes, there is a bookcase in the north entryway of church with devotional books in it. You
may borrow from there during your hour. Please return all items to the bookcase after
your hour in order to keep the adorer’s pew neat. All materials donated to the bookcase
should be dropped off at the parish office so that it can be reviewed and approved. You
may bring your own books from home; however, please do not forget to take them with
you when you leave at the end of your hour.
Do I have to stay in the “adorer’s pew”? No, you are asked to sign the book at the adorer’s pew, but then you may pray in church
wherever you are most comfortable.
