"Whom shall I send? Here I am Lord. Send me."

Our readings today speak of the call of The Lord. We often mistak-enly think that God's call is aimed only at the great biblical figures such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Elijah, the Apostles or perhaps our priests or those in religious orders. But God calls us all to lead lives where we fulfill the unique plan He has for each of us.

Through our Baptism we are called to be people of God and are asked to lead holy lives. Our calls or vocations may take diverse

forms. Mothers, fathers, husbands and wives, teachers, lawyers, physicians, coaches, engineers, farmers, grocers ... you get the point. These vocations become holy when we carry them out in a way that gives glory to God. We glorify God when we perfect ourselves as humans. Jesus showed us the way to live the perfect human life in keeping with God’s will. As Matthew Kelly, the Catholic writer and speaker states, we should become “the best versions of ourselves.”

There is a formula that these calls from God seem to follow. First, God calls. It is his initiative. God makes the first move. The one called usually responds with fear and a statement of unworthiness. Isaiah was a man of unclean lips among a people of unclean lips. Peter's feelings of unworthiness forced him to ask Jesus to depart from him for he was a sinful man. In the second reading the apostle Paul proclaims the mighty works that God was accomplishing in him despite his own unworthiness. But let's face it, only with God's grace could we ever be deemed worthy to carry out his plan.

Today’s Gospel is very familiar to us. Peter and his coworkers had fished all night with nothing to show for their work. Yet due to his trust in Jesus, Peter cast his nets once again this time with a bountiful catch. The story tells us that no matter how futile our efforts may appear to be, God chooses to work through our efforts and He will successfully accom-plish His purposes if we respond to His call.

There are many forces in our society today that would have us give-up when the going gets tough. The Gospel message reminds us that Peter and his companions had given up their failed efforts at fishing and were washing their nets. Their work was finished for the day. Peter, however, in an act of faith, heeds the call of Jesus and as a result experiences as-tonishing success.

In our world today we are necessary if God’s work is going to be done. God needs us. He has provided a sense of direc-tion through Sacred Scripture, prophets and priests. Along with His guidance he has gifted us with many talents and assured us that He will be with us always. He in turn waits for our response. God offers – we respond. God calls - we answer. Everything depends upon our response.

Our patron saint, St. Teresa of Avila, wrote a beautiful reflection that is as relevant to us today as it was to the people of her day. She wrote:

“Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks with compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.”

If we do not answer God’s call and step forward to do His work, it will not be done. We must heed His call and join him in His work. We must be ready for His call. God’s call isn’t necessarily an overpowering call. Elijah heard the call of God in a tiny whisper (1 Kings 19:12). God speaks to us in unanticipated and unexpected ways. We must be ready. We must be attentive and open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. We must spend time with God in reading the scriptures and in prayer. In our prayer we must learn to be still and listen. God has a unique and individual plan for each of us. We must listen for His voice, His call and be ready to respond.

It is only through our faith that we are able to utter those bold words, "Here I am Lord. Send me."

God bless you, Deacon Kerry

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Each of the readings for the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time makes reference to people being “called.” Of course, each of us is called by God to be a disciple. The challenge for us is to hear that call, understand it, and then to respond to it with action. The first reading from Isaiah reminds us of a hymn based upon that reading most Catholics have sung and heard for the past few decades — “Here I am Lord.” The hymn portrays Isaiah’s response to God calling him. The lyrics in the refrain, known to many, are “Here I am Lord. It is I lord. I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, where you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.” The Gospel from Luke is a story known popularly — of how Jesus told Peter and James and John to go out in Peter’s boat and fish again, even though they had caught nothing previously. The catch was enormous and it was a changing point in the vocations of those men. They were fishermen, and had probably been fishermen since they were boys. Fishing was their vocation, but Jesus called them to something higher — to be “fishers of men,” and they responded by changing vocations from fishermen to apostles — messengers. Some of us, like Isaiah, are called to vocations of discipleship which function paral-lel to our life’s vocation, our jobs. Others, like Peter, are called to lifetime vocations — holy orders. The point is not which vocation we follow — it is that as good stewards we recognize we have a vocation — a role — in building the Kingdom of God. Are we prepared and are we responding in the way we should? “Here I am Lord… I will go, Lord, where you lead me.”

STEWARDSHIP SAINT OF THE MONTH:

FEBRUARY Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne

R.S.C.J. (1769-1852)

Missionary to Native Americans

St. Rose Philippine Duchesne was a passionate young woman with a heart for missionary work. She joined the Visitation nuns at the age of 19, but a few years later, convents were shut down during the French Revolution, and Rose was forced to return to life as a lay woman for many years. Ten years later, she was finally able to rejoin a convent, this time as a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart. In 1818, she was sent to the Louisiana Territory as a missionary, facing illness, hardship and hunger to bring Catholicism to the Native Americans. She opened the first free school for girls west of the Missis-sippi river, as well as the first Catholic school for Native Americans. She was known among the Pottowami Indians as the "Woman Who Prays Always."

Thank you again, and may God bless you all, Pat Bush

They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.”

Growing Food in Burkina Faso

In the small West African nation of Burkina Faso, 80% of the population are farmers. Frequent

droughts make it difficult to produce enough food for the entire year. Often, farmers can only

grow enough to feed their families for seven months. The rest of the year is called “the hungry

season.” This week, we pray for families in Burkina Faso and give to CRS Rice Bowl to help

small-scale farmers.
