F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 9 SKI TRIP DIARY 2019 FRANCE - MONTGENÈVRE This is our third/fourth year going on the Winchmore ski trip with Mrs Tidmarsh and we have no idea how they get better every year. The skiing improves, we improve and overall we all have a blast. It’s time to connect with people you would never necessarily meet at school and helps bond people together making and strengthening friendships. Each day we do different activities to fill up free time and make the most of the area we are in because for some they may never return to such a beautiful location. Some of the activities we did were the Luge, treasure hunt, snowball fight, bum boarding and quiz night not to mention the disco. The Luge is a single track of pure speed and fun, with drops, quick turns and tunnels. The treasure hunt required us to find a list of locations and items in the town. Followed by a huge snowball fight in the middle of the empty town, this was started by the teachers. Bum boarding is another alpine tradition of sleighing that we do on the beginner slopes that are surprisingly steep. The next night we took part in a Harry Potter ski quiz, filled with Harry Potter references and ski terminology. We watched many teachers participate in trying to dance to songs that were barely recognisable over the loud shouts of the Year 8. This may be one of our last trips as next year we are undergoing GCSEs and won’t be able to attend due to mocks and study leave. Then depending on what we choose for A level we may leave for a different Sixth Form and won’t be able to attend. However the past years we have been on this trip it is a break from homework, tests and school. It’s a beautiful place and will take your breath away so anyone who has the opportunity, take it because you may not get a view that beautiful ever again. Ski Trip Diary 2019France - MonTgenèvre

This is our third/fourth year going on the Winchmore ski trip with Mrs Tidmarsh and we have no idea how they get better every year.

My ski trip experience was so wild, it was exhilarating! From bum boarding to skiing down the fast slopes, the beautiful views to relaxing with friends in our rooms, I loved every minute of it!

We skied on the slopes for 4.5 hours a day. Every level of ability was catered for by passionate and encouraging instructors. By the end of the week I had mastered the parallel turns and we even went over the Italian border into Italy to ski there for the afternoon. On the last day we even skied through a blizzard.

The fun didn’t stop on the slopes though, in the afternoon and evenings the adventures continued together. Exploring the village of Montegenevre, walking up the mountain to the beautiful souvenir shop with my friends. We had a massive snowball fight, we went bum boarding down the slopes. The disco was fun too everyone dancing to cheesy tunes!

I loved every second and I can’t wait until next year.

Thank you to all of the teachers and my parents for a wonderful experience.

attendance

Attendance and Punctuality are taken very seriously here at Winchmore School. Government expectations are that pupils have at least 95% attendance. It is your responsibility to make sure that your child attends school on a regular basis and on time.

Studies show that regular attendance is linked to higher achievement and being at school and arriving on time will allow your child to make the most of everything that Winchmore School has to offer. Habits of regular attendance and good time keeping, learnt now, will benefit your child for the rest of their school career and throughout life.

Please help us to help your child attend regularly. If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance and/or punctuality, or just wish to pass on some information, you can contact us on the school number or email us at: [email protected]

Jack petchey Speakout challenge 2019

Winchmore were lucky enough to receive two training days from the Jack Petchey Speakers Trust this year, with over 40 Year 10’s taking part. Feedback from students was positive with some saying that they ‘developed confidence in public speaking’ and thought that the ‘day was excellent’. The speakers trust trainer commented on the excellent behaviour of Winchmore students and how they held themselves professionally throughout the day. The judges struggled to get it down to 6 semi-finalists and we put 9 through to the Assembly final. The 9 students were: Simon Fleming, Joseph Iyamu, James Dumonbreville, Lucas Rafael Cunha, Nazife Dagli, Mahima Ali, India Saleem, Ameen Rahman and Mustafa Ak. All students delivered brilliant speeches; some addressed very serious, current issues such as; homelessness and the impact of the media in today’s society. After some difficult deliberating from the judging panel, they decided to announce Mahima Ali as the overall winner with her amazing speech entitled: “In defence of the cliché”.

Jack petchey Speakout challenge - regional Finals

After winning the school finals against excellent Year 10 opposition, Mahima Ali, 10.5, competed in the Regional Finals of the Jack Petchey SpeakOut challenge held at St Anne’s school on Wednesday 13th February. Coming up against 20 other speakers from other schools in Enfield, Mahima ruthlessly battled it out for a place in the grand finals with her speech entitled ‘In defence of the Cliché’. Waiting patiently until the end to speak, Mahima stood up and delivered her speech with panache, guile and exuberance. Following on from her excellent speech, Mahima was crowned Regional Champion, with judges remarking that her speech was “inspirational” and “thought-provoking”. Mahima’s win means Winchmore have again retained their Regional Final title for the 4th time in the last 6 years. The support shown to Mahima from both students and staff demonstrated the famous ‘Winchmore Way’ and how everyone pulls together as a community to support and celebrate others’ achievement.

rotary - youth Speaks District Finals

After winning the Enfield Rotary Club Youth speaks competition, first timers: Harry Doyle, Sejal Patel and Ruby Shapir competed at the London District Public Speaking finals held at New City College, Redbridge on Saturday 23rd February. Despite facing difficult opponents from schools that had previously entered and won this competition, the team performed outstandingly and there were only a few points separating them from placing teams. The highlight of the day came when Harry Doyle won, best ‘Vote of Thanks’. All three students delivered their speeches with gusto and passion, impressing all judges.
