“So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have
washed your feet, you also should wash one
another’s feet. I have set you an example so
that you should do as I have done for you.” -John 13:14-15
Christ’s posture in the Gospel reveals a great deal about our mission as
God’s people. As Christ kneels to wash the feet of his disciples, we are
called to take the same servant posture and serve the rest of the world.
Jesus demonstrated that we are to be humble people who kneel to do
the work of servants. We kneel to face the neighbor and the stranger
who we are sent out to serve.
Jesus offering himself as food for his followers during the Passover
meal; Jesus pouring himself out on the cross. All of these actions
speak of the mission that we who are now in Christ also have: to serve
the needs of the world Jesus died for. During this month Ash
Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. As we journey through the
Lenten Season, we will be asked to focus on hunger around the world.
Our Lenten offerings on Wednesdays’ noon services and evening
services will be dedicated to the World Hunger Appeal.

Call to order: Meeting was called to order by Duane Christensen at 10:55 a.m. President Chris-tensen started by talking about how this is our 110th congregational meeting and how we are standing on some good times. There are also some real needs for the message of Christ in the world.

Resolution for BCCC Advisory Board: January 9, 2018 Meeting of the Church Council, a motion was passed to allow the BCCC Advisory Board to look into building a Romper Room onto the church. The motion is now brought to the con-gregation to be approved.
Miriam Kindem explained that the BCCC board is looking for a committee to help look into the build-ing of a Romper Room.
Discussion included what building onto the existing structure of the church would mean and who would be financially responsible for the expenses.
The BCCC plans to make 11 payments to the Be-thel Foundation to be debt free by the end of 2018.
It was requested that someone from the committee keep the congregation updated monthly or bi-monthly on the progress of adding a romper room.
Motion Passed (30 votes, none opposed).
President Christensen passed the gavel over to the new President, Kirt Dreyer.
Kirt Dreyer adjourned the meeting at 11:39 a.m.

Highlights
The mission of the Church is to Glorify
God
Tuesday, December 12, 2017 Old Business: The Memorial Garden - Jack and Jan Johnson will not be
working on the garden this year. It will need to be kept up.
Recognition Sunday for New Members - One idea is to
post a bulletin board with photos and a short paragraph about themselves.
M/S Lisa Newhouse/Kirt Dreyer moved that we have a ‘New Friends of Bethel’ Recognition Service & Fellowship hour on Sunday, January 21, 2018. Motion Passed. New Business: New Church Members: Emily Case, Andrew-Husband,
Hudson - Son M/S Jessica Powell/Kirt Dreyer to accept the Andrew and Emily Case family and their son Hudson as new members of Bethel. Motion Passed. Recommended Benevolences for 2018: Bethel gives a
tithe of 10% of our annual budget to several organizations. Bethel gives 5% to the North American Lutheran Church. The remainder is split between several local and foreign organiza-tions. Bethel is generous in their giving, being one of the leading churches in the Bemidji area who donates.
M/S Char Espe/Lisa Newhouse that we divide the 5% equally among all 6 organizations that we give benevolences to. Motion Passed. A suggestion was given that there be a night for young
families who are members or friends of Bethel to get together. Lisa Vind and her daughter Holly would volunteer to watch the small children at Bethel. This would give them an opportunity to fellowship with each other. Post this in the bulletin.
A suggestion was given that Bethel members pray for all
the Children of Bethel, including both the children in the Child Care Center and children who attend services with parents.

Old Business: PVC Retirement - Patti has accrued a large amount of Paid
Time Off. She would like to stay on the payroll until her PTO is paid up. This will allow her to keep her current insurance plan until that time. She is planning on retiring in April.
M/S Kirt Dreyer/Char Espe moved that we allow Patti VanCamp to retire in April as are her plans and stay on the payroll until her vacation or comp time is used up. Amendment - As of January 28, we will have in writing a current number of hours of comp time that will be due to her. Amendment Passed. Amended Motion Passed.
Congregational Members to Pray for children of Bethel -
Jessica has made a list of all the children by family. We will create a board to have in the Narthex and we will have members of the congregation sign up to pray for these children.
A suggestion was made that employees of the BCCC be
issued name tags and lanyards so that they are easily identifiable as employees by persons who may be visiting the church.
New Business: Bethel Foundation Grant Recommendations -
M/S Kirt Dreyer/Jessica Powell moves that we recommend to the Foundation to meet all the requests fully. Motion Passed.
Dumpster - BCCC asks that we move the dumpster closer to the door of the building due to the difficulty of hauling all the garbage to the dumpster in the winter. M/S Pastor Mark Kindem/Kelly Vind moved that the dumpster be moved to the west end of the parking lot for the duration of the winter. Motion Passed. Election of Officers
President—Kirt Dreyer Vice-President—Samantha Pond Secretary—Kelly Vind Treasurer—Jessica Powell
The BCCC requested permission to begin looking into building an addition onto the church. This would be a large playroom for the children to play in during inclement weather. M/S Sally McIntyre/Lisa Newhouse moved to give permission to the BCCC board to begin looking into planning and financing a romper room (an addition to the church) with the condition that they come back for congregational approval before they do any financing, breaking of grounds, and building. Motion Passed.
The council would like a print out of those persons on the various committees.
Respectfully submitted by Sara Dreyer, Council Secretary.

Bemidji Community Food Shelf
“Mission Statement: The Bemidji Community Food Shelf is a faith-based, caring place that listens to those who are experiencing food insecurity. We work with our partners to be inclusive and to provide fresh, nourishing foods for those living in Beltrami County and the Bemidji School District.”
Thank you: Thank you for saving Our Family barcodes and your donations to the Food Shelf. Also, thank you to our volunteers (Karen Tank, Char Espe, Suze Ann Pearson, Alice Sadek and Dee Tiegland).
Clients Served: Between January 1st and November 30th, the Food Shelf had 10,433 visits compared to 9,345 during the same months in 2016. That means 1088 more visits and about 140,000 more pounds of food. It also shows that many families in the community are in need.
Stuff-a-Truck: The Stuff-a-truck campaign in November was again very successful with a total of $4,361.43 and a total of 13,665 pounds. Donations from the schools were: Middle School $652.33, High School $765.46, Marketplace Foods $1,412.85, Hockey game $80, and all Area Schools $1,450.79.
Volunteers Needed: Due to the large number of clients we have been serving, additional volunteers are needed. If you could work one of the shifts (9 to 12:30 or 12 to 3) on the first Wednesday of the month, please call me (586-3424).
Annual Meeting: The Food Shelf’s Annual Meeting will be held February 10th at Bethel. Lunch and the Annual meeting will be at 12 noon followed by the presentation: “Health Inequities in Northern Minnesota” by Nutritionist, Amanda Shongo. All volunteers are encouraged to attend.
Current Needs: The Food Shelf is in need of canned meat, peanut butter, cold cereal, canned fruit, pork and beans, bar soap, shampoo, dish and laundry detergent, toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant, and facial tissue.
Website: The Food Shelf has a new website - www.bcfsmn.org

Churches United
Churches United is a non-profit organization that is primarily funded by member churches for the purpose of meeting the emergency needs of the homeless and low-income people. Bethel is a member church, and a portion of our benevolent dollars are directed towards this ministry. Churches United touches the lives of the people they serve in ways that cannot be measured in dollars and cents.
A story from the Director: “Becky (not her real name) first came to the Churches United office in mid-September. She had escaped an abusive relationship and was living in her car, as there was no room at the battered women’s shelter. We were able to give her food, gas, personal hygiene products and a quilt, which she hugged and shed a tear over. Two weeks later, Becky is back and still living in her car. Again, we provided food, gas, and personal hygiene products. We also gave her a pillow and another blanket, as it was getting colder outside. A month later, Becky is still living in her car, however, now she needs help with a deposit on the apartment that Bi-cap is helping her move into. Food, gas, and the partnership with Bi-cap to cover the rent deposit enabled Becky to move out of homelessness. The Friday before Christmas, Becky picked up a Tub of Love and thanked the Churches United volunteers for the many blessings that she has received in the past few months. Becky’s story can be multiplied, in one way or another, hundreds of times per year.”
Churches United is located in the old Lincoln School building at 414 Lincoln Ave SE. Office hours are 12 pm – 4pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. If you are interested in supporting this mission by volunteering, feel free to either stop by their office or give them a call (444-1380).
