February 2014 From Our Rector

I was reminded of this article when thinking of where we are as church in our communities.

“Why go to Church?

A church attendee wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. “I’ve gone for 30 years now, “ he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me I can’t remember a single one of them. So I think I’m wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.” This started a real controversy in the ‘Letters to the editor’s column’ for weeks until someone wrote this clincher.

“I’ve been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32.000 meals. But for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this: They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!” When you are DOWN to nothing, God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes in the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!”

In these days of debate and concern re attendance at church we perhaps need to ‘get back to basics’. Before we get lost in the debate re what type of music, what to wear, what type of service, all age, young age, old age etc perhaps we ought to reflect on the response referred to in the article quoted and pray through the question ‘why do we go to church?’ Then the debate can focus on what we need to fulfil our need for spiritual nourishment.

In many ways December in St Mary’s showed church at its best. The literally hundreds of people who came through the doors for the various services probably would answer the question in different ways. However many did get a lovely sense of being part of something special and for that we thank God.

When reflecting on “what is church” I could not let the opportunity pass to reflect on the service of celebration for the life of John Blenkiron. That really was what church is about – community (and it did rather feel like the whole community of Richmond and beyond) coming together to celebrate, with God at the centre. John was a man who preached with action and not just words – a man who touched the hearts of so many of us. It was a joy and privilege to be part of such a coming together.

John Blenkiron was a great believer in taking his faith out into the community in his own way, and although (to my knowledge) he never stood in the market place waving his bible, everyone who knew him, knew of his very strong faith.

In the same way, we as church must continue to be church in the market place – in otherwords – we must be involved and have a Christian influence in all aspects of our community. Many of you are already working in the community, supporting the various agencies and have been doing for some time. Over the coming months I will be looking at ways in which we, as church, can be more involved in a supportive way in the community.

I encourage you to look at how church can be more supportive of our two schools – The CofE Primary School and SFX, the YMCA and the RCVS. The recent CTIR meeting was most enlightening for many when faced with the amount of need and deprivation there is in Richmond as well as our rural communities.

To be able to face the strains and stresses of the real world around us, we are also looking at ways in which we can be spiritually nourished – our batteries recharged. With this in mind, in addition to our existing and successful study groups, held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, we have now launched a short, six session course from Lindisfarne and St Anthony’s Priory called “Come to the Well and Drink “. It is both experiential and reflective. The only requirement for coming is a desire for God. The course started Jan22nd and will continue on every Wednesday at 2:00pm at the rectory up to and including 26

th February. They are a series of stand - alone

sessions so feel free to join, even if you weren’t able to be with us for the first sessions.

Then, as part of Christians Together in Richmond, we launch the five session ecumenical York Lent course entitled BUILD ON THE ROCK – Faith, doubt – and Jesus. More details in the March magazine.

February 16th is Education Sunday.

We hope to be able to welcome some children from our schools at our 10:00am service. We are exploring ways in which our support for the primary school can be more constructive and tangible – watch this space.

Perhaps by our efforts to take God into the market place, more people may be encouraged to ask such questions as “what is church” and “why go to church”.

Although more than 1.2 billion Fairtrade bananas are now sold in the UK each year, that is still only one in three of the bananas sold.

So ‘Abolish the Unfair Banana’ aims to carry on transforming the banana industry, in order to ensure that those at the sharp end of the supply chain – the millions of struggling banana farmers – get a fair deal.

NATIONAL NEST BOX WEEK Whether human or feathered, it is well known that love-birds like to nest together. This is why the British Trust for Ornithology has cho-sen Valentine’s Day to open National Nest Box Week (14 – 21 Feb). The week aims to encourage people to put up nest boxes - not only

to protect the wildlife we already have, but to encourage even more birds to brood in our gardens. The need is greater than ever. Since National Nest Box Week started in 1997, more trees have been cut down, meaning that even more birds have nowhere to build their homes. Nest boxes are a great alternative – it is reckoned that there are now between five to six million boxes across the UK! For details of all the different types of nest boxes, visit: www.bto.org

SLOW DOWN – IT IS FEBRUARY!

How are your energy levels? February is famous for being the time of year when people most want to hibernate – to sleep, to be left alone, and to do as little as possible. So instead of fighting the winter blues this year, why not go with the natural rhythms of nature? Set aside as much time as you can – to do nothing but rest. It is no coincidence that February is when retreat bookings soar: people want to escape the crowds and renew themselves.

“I think the human spirit is like a daffodil bulb, preparing for the Spring by refreshing its roots, so it can bloom again when the times comes.” So says Stafford Whiteaker, former monk, ex-hermit and editor of The Good Retreat Guide. The Bible makes clear that God blesses our times of rest: ‘In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.’ (Ps 4:8)

Two Weddings, three funerals and a whole lot more…. Christmas is always a busy time of the year. Somehow dozens of things have to be ’done by Christmas’ in addition the things which we do every day. No matter how much we fight it, life at home and work suddenly becomes very hectic. No use seeking sanctuary in church - it was a busy thirty one days here too. The normal pattern of Sunday and weekday services continues with just a few additions. We hosted three special carol services for organizations within the town. On two occasions local schools abandoned the school hall and came to us for their annual Christmas event. Many of the same faces also appeared at the candlelight Christingle and Christmas Eve Crib Service. Two Sunday evenings became our Advent Sequence and Nine Lessons and Carols Services. Late on Christmas Eve we gathered at Richmond and Hudswell for midnight worship and after a few hours sleep we finally greeted the great day. Two happy couples chose this special time to get married and begin their life together. I very much hope that the families at the three funerals during the month felt comforted and supported as they met in the church. Musical tastes of all types were catered for with four concerts two choral one with a military band and another celebrating the talents of musicians home for the holidays. Hundreds of people (literally) walked through the doors of their parish church during the month. I hope all have felt part of the good news of Christmas and left with a little bit of seasonal magic on their feet. None of this would have been possible without a lot of hard work by many people. On behalf of all of us ‘thank you’ John and Antony, Joan, Joy and Scott for leading our worship. Colin, visiting organists and the choir, Carol, Upbeat and Anacrusis for the wonderful music which has inspired our worship. To the many who have taken time from their own busy schedule to work in our church in so many different ways - THANK YOU TEAM. David Frankton

STOREHOUSE

Thank you to all who support the Storehouse Foodbank with dona-tions left in the large box at the back of church. Over the past month approximately 15 bags of non-perishable foods have been left, the contents of which are greatly appreciated by those who re-ceive food parcels. THANK YOU!

Thank you also to Leonard and Susan and Stuart who take the con-tributions from church every week - a bulky job done most willingly.

Although we are busy all year through, there is always something special about the month of December in school. Wherever you go, there are people beavering away at projects linked to Christmas and there is glitter and sparkle galore! We began the month with something less festive, but equally exciting. If you have visited school this term you will have noticed our willow reindeer which the Y6 children created last year. The

same people who worked with those children came back to school in December to work with all the children in school. This time they all worked outside (even in the wind and rain!) to make a willow shelter and tunnels on the school field. As these are living willows, they will continue to grow and, come summer, will provide a leafy shelter and play areas for the children. Our fantastic FORCE (Friends of Richmond Church of England School) people worked very hard and had a very successful Christmas Fair in the middle of the month. Various stalls raised over £1000 towards school funds and a good time was had by all. It’s lovely to see the hall full of children with their families and waiting to meet Father Christmas, who always makes a special visit to us. Throughout the last few weeks, the hall at school was busy with children from Key Stage One and from Foundation Stage making their Christmas preparations. Key Stage One entertained parents and friends with their nativity play with everyone singing, performing, dressing up or reading. Foundation Stage children also prepared songs for parents and delivered them with confidence and gusto! As well as all the Christmas preparations, everything else goes on at school, including our sporting activities. The Y5/6 football team were hugely successful and brought back a huge trophy after winning the finals of the local schools’ league. Not only had they worked superbly as a team, but their grace and humility in victory were wonderful to see also. They were also successful in a local hockey event, with teams coming in first and second. We had a fantastic record-breaking number of children who joined this year’s singing group and came along to perform at the Mayor’s Christmas concert this year. Well done to Mrs Foxwell, who single-handedly prepared this large group of children of all ages who, as usual, did us proud on the night. Their rendition of a new song called “My Gran Wants an Action Man” was much appreciated by all! It was also very encouraging to see so many parents supporting their children that evening and enjoying the concert too. For a lot of December, groups of children could be found working away at cutting out and decorating the angels which flew high above the heads of everyone at St Mary’s over the Christmas period. It has become something of a tradition for the children at school to contribute to the decorations in some way and they all loved coming to our school’s special collective worship in church on the penultimate day of term and seeing how they all looked. The service itself was also appreciated by many children, staff, parents and grandparents. It is always a good opportunity to focus on the real meaning of Christmas amidst the Father Christmas frenzy! This is always followed by Christmas Dinner at school which is always an enjoyable event, with all the children and staff joining in as well as some governors. So 2013 is over, let’s see what 2014 brings. With good wishes to everyone in the Parish from all the children, staff and governors at Richmond Church of England Primary School. Richmond is holding a sponsored sleep out on the night of 4th April 2014, in aid of the local youth homelessness charity SASH (Safe and Sound Homes). SASH prevents vulnerable young people from becoming homeless by offering them a room in a volunteer’s home, giving them a safe place to stay for a few nights while they access the help they need. It operates across North Yorkshire, York and the East Riding. You can find out more

at www.sash-uk.org.uk. The Richmond SASH Sleepout follows similar successful and safely-run sleepouts in previous years at Northallerton, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and York.

The aims of this community event are to: • Raise awareness of youth homelessness in Richmondshire and across North Yorkshire • Raise funds so SASH can continue to meet the growing demand for this ‘Nightstop’ service.

Participants will sleep in the grounds of St Marys Church. The church will be open all night for toilets, hot drinks and emergencies, and breakfast will be provided the next morning. Anyone can take part, so long as you are fit and healthy and willing to sacrifice your warm beds for one night. Under-17s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. All participants must register with the organisers, for the safe and sensible running of the event. We welcome groups taking part – group leaders may wish to make their own arrangements and register the group as a whole. Please let us know in good time so we can support you with all the information you need.

We are starting to compile lists of those willing and wishing to play an active part in this event. We are looking for those wishing to do the sleepout, and or those wishing to do a stint as watchmen, and or those willing to help with publicity, and or those able to help with fundraising.
