Michael Johnston is NECA’s executive director of standards and safety. Prior to working with NECA, Johnston worked for the International Association of Electrical Inspectors as the director of education, codes and standards. He also worked as an electrical inspector and electrical inspection field supervisor for the City of Phoenix, AZ. Johnston achieved a BS in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. He served on NEC CMP-5 in the 2002, 2005, and 2008 cycles and is currently the chair of CMP-5 representing NECA for the 2011 NEC cycle. He currently chairs the NFPA NEC Smart Grid Task Force. Among his responsibilities for managing the codes, standards, and safety functions for NECA, Johnston is secretary of the NECA Codes and Standards Committee. He is a member of the IBEW and has experience as an electrical journeyman wireman, foreman and project superintendent. Johnston is an active member of IAEI, NFPA, ASSE, the NFPA Electrical Section, Education Section, the UL Electrical Council, and National Safety Council.

Johnston will discuss NECA’s current and planned safety products and their new Standing Policy: Safety Programs, Safe Workers. He will also cover the role of both the electrical contractor and the electrical worker and the cultural shift challenges that the industry will be facing.

The NJATC is the training arm of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). Palmer Hickman also serves as a Director of Codes and Standards for the IBEW. In this capacity, he represents the IBEW on the National Electrical Code (NEC) Technical Correlating Committee (TCC), Code Panel 1 of the NEC®, and on the Technical Committees for NFPA 70E® — Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, NFPA 70B® — Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance, and NFPA 79® — Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery. In addition to his Codes and Standards responsibilities, he is an OSHA Construction Industry Master Instructor as well as an OSHA-authorized Outreach Trainer for both Construction and General Industry. He is a thirty year member of the IBEW with additional memberships including IAEI, NFPA, NETA and the UL Electrical Council. In addition to completion of the IBEW/NECA/NJATC apprenticeship, his educational background includes a BA in Labor Safety and Health.

Prior to joining Westex in 2000, Scott Margolin was a firefighter for six years, and then spent 10 years at a major multinational chemical company working in two of their flame resistant fiber businesses, including four years leading the flash fire segment. He has conducted over 3,200 flash fires and 1,100 arc flashes in labs in the United States, Canada and Europe; among this research is groundbreaking work creating arcs in real equipment and utilizing high speed, super slow motion cameras to analyze arc flash and PPE performance. Scott has presented these topics at seminars around the world including North and South America, Europe, Russia and Australia, and is a member of numerous NFPA and ASTM committees, including 2112, F-18, and F-23.

Margolin will discuss the hazards of arc flash, the consequences of wearing flammable clothing in an arc, the myths surrounding arcs and FRC, the 2009 changes to NFPA 70E which involve FRC, and the changes pending in the 2012 70E.

Mike Wright’s electrical and safety career spans nearly 35 years. He spent 14 years in safety management for the 20th largest electrical contractor. He also contributed to modernizing PPE to enhance comfort, functionality and safety. Recently, Wright founded 70E Solutions, a company which closely works alongside global Fortune 500 companies performing NFPA 70E training, PPE testing and electrical safety equipment sales.

Wright’s hands-on session with electrical equipment shows attendees causes and the potential for equipment failure, leading to arc flash or shock exposures to experienced electrical workers. He shares concepts and techniques for safe work practices taught in his “qualifying the worker” classes.

As the son of a NECA Academy of Electrical Contracting member, Steve Abbott’s electrical and safety background started at an early age. Since 1990, when he graduated from Muskingum University and became an OSHA Outreach Instructor, he has been involved with developing, writing and revising policies and providing training for electrical safety programs. He branched out from his father’s contracting business to create Stark Safety Consultants, a specialized electrical safety consulting and engineering group. Stark Safety Consultants has been a National Training Partner with the NJATC since 2006, and continues to provide support to NECA / IBEW to educate and promote electrical safety. In 2010, Steve was asked to serve on the NJATC NFPA 70E national advisory committee. He is an active member of the National Safety Council and the American Society of Safety Engineers.

Steve will address the key components of the incident energy analysis process, and will describe some of the key items that can determine the quality of your assessment.
