1. OffsetOnDemand Solutions Visitors will view the OffsetOnDemand demonstration that consists of a combination of the Lithrone G40P (eight-color H-UV- equipped 40-inch convertible perfecting offset printing press), already proven in many installations, the Lithrone S29 (five-color H-UV-equipped 29-inch sheetfed offset press), postpress systems, the Komori Color Management System (CMS), and a digital printing system.

‘OffsetOnDemand’ is a system that handles short runs and tight delivery schedules by cutting print preparation time, paperlosses, and the time needed for all printing

processes while retaining both the high print quality and high productivity that are the outstanding feature of offset presses by means of introducing a module that covers the prepress and postpress processes of offset printing and incorporates the latest digital printing technologies. The core technology is Komori’s advanced H-UV curing system, which uses a new UV lamp developed with Komori know-how and high-sensitivity UV ink. Using a single lamp for each side of the sheets, this system ensures high print quality and reliability in addition to offering economic and ecological advantages.

OFFSETON

DEMAND

Komori developed OffsetOnDemand based on a completely new concept. It maintains the high printing quality and high productivity of offset print while providing a competitive edge with ultrashort runs and quick turnaround work. By shortening makeready time, cutting paper waste and reducing printing time to the absolute minimum, both short-run competence and short job cycle times are achieved. The core of Komori’s revolutionary new OffsetOnDemand printing system is the fusion of the KHS-AI integrated control system, the H-UV curing system and the new leading-edge color management system.

20Matching is a Komori technology that transcends the standard perceptions of the offset printing industry by matching standard colors within 20 sheets of print start-up. Komori has now also developed the new Komori CMS Solution to work together with the KHS-AI integrated control system, a core Komori technology. Real solutions to empower printers to implement 20Matching will be presented at drupa 2012. The Komori CMS Solution consists of two parts. The first is K-PressNavi operator support software for the stabilization of offset printing – a system that only a specialist press manufacturer such as Komori could create. The second is K-ColorSimulator high-level color matching software that makes CMS proof-setting tasks, which were complex and difficult up to now, extremely easy for today’s workforce. By developing a set of solutions aimed at resolving the two major obstacles to the implementation of a CMS – the ‘instability of offset printing’ and the ‘difficulty of making proof settings in-house,’ Komori is offering real support for building a total CMS framework for printing companies.

Another key technology for OffsetOnDemand is the instant drying achieved by H-UV.

OffsetOnDemand is enabled as a total workflow by the close combination of these unique technologies, bringing unprecedented integration of the production process and ultra-high efficiency and also laying the foundation for new business initiatives.

Supports offset print quality pp p q ystabilization with work navigation for the press g poperatorp

K-PressNavi is a new printing information tool that supports standard work practices in the pressroom by displaying work navigation for the press operator on the screen of the Print Quality Control (PQC) console. For example, by using K-PressNavi for maintenance work that is essential for stable print quality, the press operator can know exactly the ‘when,’ ‘what,’ ‘why,’ and ‘how’ of the work that must be performed. The work navigation content of K-PressNavi is based on the curriculum of the Komori Graphic Technology Center Printing College.

The work procedure slides, which include video content, cover not only machine maintenance information but also various printing press settings, KHS-AI settings, and printing troubleshooting to powerfully promote the enhancement and standardization of press operators’ technical skills.

High-level color matching software that enables the colors now produced by offset printing to be reflected in an instant digital proof

The Smart Color Link feature of K-ColorSimulator drastically simplifies the entire chain of proofing tasks — color chart printing, chart measurement, ICC profile creation and color matching software adjustment — that up to now demanded so much time, effort and expertise. With Smart Color Link, simply by measuring the color chart located in the margin of the printed image on regular jobs, all of the adjustments for producing a high-level digital proof are fully automated. This expands the possibilities for flexible profile usage in a way that is completely different from the cumbersome color matching approach of the past. In addition, K-ColorSimulator, as the CMS Center Server, offers a wealth of other functions, including POD matching, reduction of ink consumption, remote proofing, print quality analysis, and standards-based proofing judgments, meaning that it meets the full range of CMS needs in the printing industy.

Smart Color LinkSome issues for which Smart Color Link is useful are:

• Even though the press is well maintained, the color of the proof and offset printing do not match.

• Proof settings by paper type, by screen ruling and by client are required.

• Intermediate color mixes do not match the proof because the inks, blankets or printing software were changed.

K-Color Chart (EC12002/1485 patch) is located in the margin of the printed image on regular jobs and is measured by PDC-SX/PDC-SII. Inkjet printer calibration, device link profile (DLP) creation, and proof settings, including color feedback, are all fully automatic from start to finish.

The Core of OffsetOnDemandThe Crown Jewel of Komori Control Technology – DoNet Digital Open Architecture Network

KHS cuts paper waste to an absolute minimum using preset data calculated from CIP4/PPF data. KHS-AI with self-learning is a further evolution of this KHS system. Preset data is optimized in accordance with the machine condition, the printing environment and changes in the printing materials. KHS-AI also obtains air and register adjustment data and provides optimized presetting functions. It also ensures stable sheet feeding and stable delivery matched to

the sheet size, thickness, grade and grain. Paper waste is slashed and makeready time and consumption of resources are substantially reduced. In addition, KHS-AI manages the operating record, status history and maintenance data of the press. The system includes a self-diagnostic function to identify and minimize problems.

This system adds an automatic registration function to the color control function n so that both color and registration bare measured in one process and the measured sinformation is automatically fed back mation ito the press. For the color control prepfunction, an automatic X-Y travel system is used so that measurement can be performed regardless of the position of the color bar. This means that the color bar can be positioned in the center of the sheet when using a perfector, for example, so as to minimize the use of paper. In addition, spot measurement of particularly important points on the image can also be performed. The automatic registration function works by using special register marks so that registration is measured simultaneously with color in the same scan and any adjustments are automatically fed back to the press. By integrating the KHS-AI color matching and register adjustment functions, PDC-SX minimizes makeready

time and further reduces paper waste.

Model with an in-line color control function added to the systemy

A multifunctional mode that adds a density control function to the in-line print quality assessment function of PQA-S. Thanks to the optimized image control provided by a high-resolution triple CCD camera and an LED light source, the color bar image is converted to density values by means of an RGB-to-CMYK conversion table. This is calibrated in advance by PDC-SX and densities are measured in-line for instant feedback to the press.

Model with two cameras for even higher accuracy is added to the g ylineupp

A twin-camera PQA-S model for fields such as packaging that demand very high print quality assessment capabilities. Two high-resolution triple CCD cameras used on the standard PQA-S are fitted, enabling a print quality assessment system with twice the accuracy of the standard model. In addition to stabilizing the light source by using an LED lighting system, the imaging angle can be changed and metalized paper can be inspected, making this a highly accurate system for assessing the print quality of a wide variety of products.

As printing machines gain more functions and operations become more complex, the load on the operator must be addressed. KID is an operation support system that puts together the information needed by the operator and presents it at just the right time in an easy-to-understand

format. KID makes it possible to maximize the total performance of the press and achieve higher productivity. In addition, KID collects and displays information from KHS-AI, PDC-SX and PQA-S.

The well-known magazine and commercial printer/publisher V-TAB in Vimmerby, Sweden, has just installed a new Komori System 38D 32-page web press which is expected to be fully operational in early 2012. The press will have a host of makeready features such as fully automatic plate change, KHS-AI, and the Komori DC-38 automatic changeover folder including auto collect to non-collect function.

V-Tab already has a Komori System 38S 16-page web press, used for producing high quality short and medium run length magazines and longer run general commercial print. The System 38D has re-written the role that a 32-page web press plays in the market place. Launched into Europe in 2006, more than twelve presses are now operating successfully across a wide variety of installations throughout the territory.

Peder Schumacher, Managing Director of V-Tab, says: “Given the diversification of the market and the clear indication of continually reducing run lengths, the market requires a more flexible high performance press that can support the ever changing demands of the advertisers — and the System 38D fits that brief.”

Tony Carter, Komori’s European/Middle East Web Sales Manager, says: “Komori is the only manufacturer to focus on makeready performance on larger format presses, thereby duplicating the high performance of its 16-page press. The System 38D gives V-TAB perfect compatibility with its existing 16-page presses as the paper width (965mm) is the same, therefore enabling full interchangeability of print jobs, paper and spare parts.”

About V-TABV-Tab is the largest printing group in the Nordic countries with operations at 11 locations around Sweden. V-TAB prints everything from daily newspapers, periodicals, direct advertising and exclusive magazines to signs and banners. V-TAB is part of the Stampen Group, which is a rapidly growing media group and Sweden´s largest newspaper owner. V-TAB has grown in recent last years, widened its offering and developed additional new services for customers. V-TAB´s size is in

many ways a strength — the plants can handle assignments that require great capacity and the geographical spread allows customers’ needs to be met.
