Cover Artist: Charles Mattina Artist Charles Mattina, a Southold resident originally from Queens, began drawing in youth with pen and ink and moved on to oils and his current preference, acrylics, in college. He has been compared to Horace Pippin, a turn-of-the-century artist but considers his greatest influence to be Edward Hopper, known for his painting “Nighthawks.” He is a veteran of many art shows, auctions and galleries. His current works consisting of ocean, beaches, and street scenes can be seen at Greenport’s Fiedler Gallery.

It’s never been so exciting out here, and it just keeps getting better. New ideas and ventures, an influx of artists, craftspeople, wine producers and farmers, and of course our visitors all combine to create a really vibrant scene. On Greenport lets you in on the action and gives you all the information you need to plan a great time while you’re here.

If you’ve been to the North Fork wineries lately, you know they can get a *little* busy. It can be hard to coordinate a relaxing, quality experience, what with festive crowds, busy servers who may not have time to answer all your questions, and, of course, the eternal dilemma of who gets to be the designated driver! Vintage Tours has created an elegant solution, offering high-end, small, informative tours that include wine tasting, lunch and transportation. We meet the company’s delightful owner Jo Anne Perry, a long-time North Fork resident and expert on the local wine industry.

The Greenport art scene continues to thrive, and a new art collective has sprung up to join the collectives and galleries that laid the foundation years ago. Here’s a peek at the art and artists that are part of this evolving collaboration; we wish them the best of luck!

I’m excited about two great new, fun additions to Greenport this year: the American Legion Burton Potter Post 185 roller skating rink and the Fire Fighter fireboat museum. The rink is an old friend to generations of ‘Porters who grew up rolling to the music and having fun, and it’s back now after almost a decade of community-driven fundraising and restoration. The Fire Fighter fireboat was the pride of the NY harbor fleet, and is now retired and moored permanently at the Greenport docks. It has a fascinating history, and is celebrating its 80th birthday this year. Both attractions are worth a visit and are kid-friendly.

Looking for things to do in the Greenport area? Just peek inside at On Greenport’s expanded calendar of events. It’s much more comprehensive than any other calendar for the area, so keep this little guide handy. More details for these events and others are at ongreenport.com, where you’ll also find the link to our sister publication, On Montauk, at onmontauk.com, which gives you everything you need to know to navigate “The End” of the South Fork.

    Enjoy!

sizes available to rent. In a conscious effort to bring the fun of skating to everyone, admission and rental are very affordable while and drinks and snacks are low-priced, too. Live DJs spin tunes and the atmosphere is lively and a little chaotic. Much of the oversight is done by volunteers like Louise Wilkinson. She was there the first day the rink reopened and now helps to rent out the skates. She can remember skating there many times as a little girl and through her teenage years. “The first time someone asked me to go steady was there,” she said. “Now, every time I go, I smile at the memories I have and the new memories being made for all

the new kids and families. The genuine fun and feelings there are amazing!” “It’s a great addition to the Greenport scene.” It’s a minor miracle that the roller skating rink reopened at all because it nearly didn’t survive into the new millennium. The story behind its revival is a heartwarming tale of community effort and perseverance. Since the 1950’s, generations of North Fork kids grew up skating there. By 2002 though, the building had fallen into disrepair due to a lack of funds, and its doors closed. But the Greenport community didn’t give up. A small group came together with a vision

Roller skating is good, old-fashioned fun. Now, after being closed for many years, Greenport’s iconic skating rink is open once again to the public, with skating sessions throughout the week for kids, teens and adults, and availability for private events. It’s a great addition to the Greenport scene. The rink is located in the Burton Potter American Legion Post 185, a big building right near Greenport’s boardwalk and the North Ferry to Shelter Island. It’s nothing fancy, but it has everything it needs. The huge interior has a high ceiling, a newly resurfaced skating floor, plenty of seating and a concession stand, plus, of course, dozens of skates in all

and started on a long road of fundraising and renovations. George D. Costello Sr., a Vietnam veteran and part-owner of a successful local construction company, dedicated years of his own time to the renovation. Superstorm Sandy in 2012 flooded the building and destroyed much of his work, and he, sadly, also died that year. It seemed for a time that the project died with him, but a new wave of volunteers and donors took up the cause. The doors reopened in March this year. The renovated space will also serve as a community center, hosting fundraisers, weddings, meetings, private parties and other events. Check out the calendar at greenportamericanlegion.org.

I met up with Jo-Anne at Pellegrini Vineyards in Cutchogue to find out more. She’s an engaging person with a ton of knowledge from years of experience showing people the best of the North Fork, and she’s clearly enthusiastic about what she does. Pellegrini Vineyards is one of the oldest and most architecturally stunning of the Long Island wineries, with a large stone courtyard surrounded by rustic yet elegant grey-shingled buildings. A white gazebo punctuates a picture-perfect vineyard that stretches away over low, rolling hills to the north. As we walk inside, the staff greets Jo-Anne with big smiles. The wineries regularly deal with noisy bachelorette parties and motor coaches full of day-trippers, they said, so they appreciate the pleasant and

purposeful atmosphere that Vintage Tours creates for its clients.

    “We love Jo-Anne,” said Pellegrini

What makes for a high-end tour of the North Fork wineries? Ideally, you’d be welcomed like an insider and treated to special winery access and tastings. Someone personable and reliable would drive as you cruise in a luxury vehicle. And while you drink wine, you’d learn about the interesting history and science of Long Island winemaking. Spend the day with Vintage Tours owner and tour guide Jo-Anne Perry, and that’s what you’ll get.

winemaker Zander Hargrave, who is a second-generation winemaker and part of this wine region’s founding family. “She always brings such great people.” That day, Hargrave was bottling the Pellegrini rosé, a delicious example of the dry yet pretty style that everyone seems to like in pink wine these days. It’s a popular choice to drink with Vintage Tours’ gourmet boxed lunch made by Grace & Grit, a local catering company that focuses on fresh and innovative eats, and sources its produce from area farms. Vintage tours started about 20 years ago, when visitors to the winery were far fewer than they are now. While wine tourism has grown exponentially, Vintage Tours remains the only outfit to offer a small-group, personalized experience. Perry has, she said, figured out the perfect rhythm to a day in wine country, creating an itinerary that includes different styles of wineries, and a balance of serious tasting, education, relaxation and fun. The 14-passenger tour van usually picks up clients in and around Greenport. They are staying at the hotels or B&Bs, or coming out for the day from New York City by train or the Hampton Jitney, or over from Connecticut on the Orient–New London ferry. Individuals, couples and groups are booked together, with a minimum of four passengers required to make a tour happen on any given day. The first stop is at a winery that dates from the start of the Long Island wine industry, like Lenz or Castello di Borghese. “I like to begin at the beginning,” she said. Then, she gives an educational tour of the vines and winemaking facilities, including the press pad, fermentation tanks and barrel cellars. A classic guided wine tasting of different styles is included. A stop at one of the “new” wineries shows the diversity that continues to grow within the industry, as smaller, more individual variations of the winemaking dream have taken root. These are places like Sparkling Pointe, Shinn Estate, McCall’s and the newest tasting room, The Cellar

Door. Lunch is often at Pellegrini Vineyards outside on the patio, or in a private VIP room with expansive second-floor views of the vineyards. The second half of the day is do-as-you-please at two more wineries, with the options to do tasting flights or purchase wine by the glass, listen to live music and just relax outdoors. Last season, Jo-Anne expanded some tours to include a stop at a local farm, like Wickham’s Fruit Farm, or 8 Hands Farm, as many clients expressed interest in local food as well as wine. She said she is currently developing more tours that will include farm stands, livestock farms and oyster purveyors, and will be listing them on her website as they become available at www.vintagetour1.com. It’s advisable to book in advance, she said, as tours fill quickly. For special requests, she will access a larger vehicle. It’s always been tempting to expand into a larger operation, she said, but she worries that if she did, she would end up sitting behind a desk coordinating tours. “I choose to keep this small and personal,” she said. “I started this business because I like being with my clients, and I really enjoy showing people the North Fork. It’s an incredibly interesting and beautiful area, and what I like to do best is to help people enjoy it and learn about it, too.”

Greenport Harbor is now home to the decommissioned National Historic Landmark, Fire Fighter, the most famous fireboat in the world. She’s docked near the Maritime Museum, sports a spiffy new coat of paint, and is all ready to welcome you aboard for the 2018 season. She fought long and hard, but now it’s time for Fire Fighter to enjoy a retirement that’s all about fun for visitors and amazing water displays.

This summer marks the vessel’s 80th birthday and several events are planned to celebrate. She’s open every weekend for tours and, on special occasions, will motor out into Greenport Harbor and show off her firefighting superpowers by shooting huge jets of water all around and hundreds of feet into the air. It ’s a dazzling sight. “She was the Queen of the Fleet, greeting ocean liners in New York Harbor with her grand water displays,” said Charlie Ritchie, president of the

Fireboat Fire Fighter Museum. But as the New York City Fire Department’s most powerful fireboat back in the day, her real job was extremely important. She and her crews served at the front lines of more than 50 fires, including some of the largest and most dangerous emergencies in maritime history. “To me, she is a representation of a period in fire-fighting history in New York Harbor that I call the “blood and guts” era, when massive fires confronted its crew at a wharf or on a

ship, and they performed beyond expectations with great tenacity and courage,” said Ritchie. “Fire Fighter battled blazes at the SS Normandie, the Luckenbach Steamship Co. Pier, SS Constellation, Port Mobil, and many others.” At the 1973 collision of the SS Sea Witch and the SS Esso Brussels, Fire Fighter rescued 30 crew trapped in the fire. For this, she received the Merchant Marine Gallant Ship Award. She was also part of the FDNY Marine Unit response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001. When the towers collapsed, the underground water mains were destroyed and no water flowed to the site. For three weeks, fireboats were the only source of water to fight the fires. And she went out with a bang. Fire

Fighter’s last emergency response was to the crash of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River on January 15, 2009. That famous disaster had a happy ending, as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger successfully landed the distressed plane on the Hudson River with no casualties. The dramatic incident became known as “The Miracle on the Hudson,” and was the topic of the 2016 biographical film “Sully.” Fire Fighter was designed by naval architect William Francis Gibbs and built in 1938 during the Great Depression. “She is the epitome of early 20th century engineering and the “can do” American attitude of the time,” Ritchie said. But she was in rough shape after being decommissioned in 2010 and languished for a few years at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. A group of

volunteers took on the task of fundraising and doing extensive renovations. At first, Ritchie said, the group struggled to find the right home port for the boat, but eventually came to Greenport. The boat looked so bedraggled that initial community response was mixed, but the group soon proved that they were determined to restore it and turn it into an asset and source of pride for the Village. They more than delivered. “Being in Greenport has allowed us to work on the vessel, draw visitors from all over the world, forge close ties with the fire fighter community, and be an attraction that is free to all,” said Ritchie. Now, after six years, Fire Fighter has been fully restored and gleams with fresh paint in its original 1938 colors. In celebration of the vessel’s 80th

birthday, from August 26th through Maritime Festival weekend, the museum will be open for extended hours, and will host guest speakers and put on water displays. Regular tour hours are Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All tours are free, but donations are appreciated and merchandise is on sale. Schedules and more information can be found at www.americasfireboat.org.

  • 42 ON GREENPORT — 2018

ON Greenport editor Gwen Groocock talks with chalk artist Kara Hoblin, owner, manager and curator of the new and exciting North Fork Art Collective (northforkartcollective.com) at 15 Front Street, in the heart of Greenport Village, whose 2018 members include multimedia artist and photographer Dalton Portella, draftsperson Kelly Franké, photographer Sarah Prescott, environmental artist Cindy Pease Roe, painter Emma Ballou, photographer Madison Fender, painter Verona Penalba, and multimedia artist Scott Bluedorn. Kara: “First, I must say that I really rely on the skills and expertise of the other annual members to make the collective a success. Community is incredibly important to me, and the collective’s focus of being a community-driven creative space for working artists to grow and collaborate stems from that key value in my life. Emma Ballou and Scott Bluedorn play a large role in curation, vision, and administrative work. Madison Fender and Kelly Franké help out with local support and activities, since they both live in Greenport. We’re excited to be working with some new members and can’t wait to see how their unique skills and talents will elevate the collective.”

    THE NORTH FORK ART COLLECTIVE

    By Gwen Groocock

So, what is the philosophy of the collective? Kara: “The space acts as a studio for the artists and a place to exhibit. It’s meant to be a platform for artists to grow and learn. It’s different for every artist and how it will affect their practice. The idea is kind of like an “incubator concept;” once the collective has served its purpose for an artist, a new artist can rotate into the annual membership. This will be our first full year and everything is a learning process for us, and we’re open to experimentation. I like to

think of it as a symbiotic relationship between the artist and the collective similar to how the clownfish finds safety in a sea anemone, and in turn the anemone is protected by the clownfish. As well as protecting each other, we are forcing each other to grow in a positive direction and

inspiring each other to keep creating.”

Can you tell us about when and how the collective formed? Kara: “This has been a dream of mine for many years. It manifested itself differently than I expected, but I couldn’t be happier that it’s a reality now. We had our first physical space after Rena Wilhelm from The Weathered Barn reached out to me when a space next door was unexpectedly vacated in the middle of the summer (2017); she said it might be the perfect place for an art collective. After speaking with the landlord, I spoke to like-minded artist

friends who are also community driven and serious about their art careers, and thus the collective was born.”

What kind of reception have you gotten so far from the Greenport community? Kara: “An incredibly positive reception! We have been welcomed with open arms. Honestly, that’s what really made it clear we had to continue. The positive feedback and encouragement was only eclipsed by the outpouring of support for the collective to reopen in a new space. It’s wonderful how our community has stated its desire and need for a local artist collective. We definitely wouldn’t be here without our community!” How do you all decide who gets to join? Kara: “It’s an evolving process, but everything we do has a level of calculated curation, including input from our annual members. All of our artists are dedicated to their practice and are serious about their commitment to their art.”

And giving back? Kara: “I think the best part for us is the impact we’ve had on our community. The collective’s structure for this season is to focus on our artists’ specific interests,

skills, and schedules. We believe this will make a real impact on our small organization and through a variety of partnerships we already have lined up for this year, it will also benefit our community.”

So, what’s on the schedule for this season? Kara: “Although we are not an event space, we’ll be hosting openings mostly correlating with the Greenport BID Gallery Walk.* We will have three community shows this year and also host art classes. The collective also has many local partners and will be working on events throughout the North Fork and South Fork. We love collaborating and are always looking for new ways to grow the arts in our community!” * The Greenport Gallery Walk is the first Friday of the month, June 1 through December 9. Participating galleries stay open late; The Siren’s Song, Nova Constellata, Gallery M, South Street Gallery, Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. Gallery, Olive Studio, VSOP Projects, Hector deCordova Studio and the North Fork Art Collective.
