As well as a busy programme of special services, exhibitions and events we look forward to welcoming Diocese of Durham pilgrimages throughout the year. Step inside the cathedral to see breath-taking installations including LIGHT by Chris Levine from 20 March, and Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram in the autumn. Meanwhile coming this summer is a fascinating exhibition on the history of pilgrimage at Durham in Open Treasure, the cathedral’s award-winning interactive museum for all ages.

This focus on pilgrimage ties in with a national year of pilgrimage celebration by cathedrals across the country, plus Cathedrals at Night, a series of evening openings with a specific emphasis on pilgrimage. We hope you, regardless of your faith, take the chance to experience Durham Cathedral as a pilgrim this year.

YEAR OF PILGRIMAGEThis year join in the celebrations for Durham’s Year of Pilgrimage, an ambitious project to accompany the launch of six new Northern Saints Trails to Durham Cathedral. These long-distance walking routes are inspired by ancient pilgrimage routes and the stories of our much loved northern saints: Aidan, Cuthbert, Oswald, Hild and Bede, and are the result of years of work by partners all around the region.

Durham Cathedral is rooted within the communities it serves, imparting in people a deep love and proud ownership of its Norman grandeur. From the tombs of Northern saints to celebrations of mining heritage and the daily practice of faith, the cathedral holds a special place in the hearts of those near and far.

The challenge facing the cathedral today, which does not receive regular external funding, is to cover day-to-day costs and enable us to respond quickly to conservation needs.

It costs around £15 per minute to run the cathedral, but from just £5 per month you can provide vital support for our work by becoming a patron.

We would love your support. Talk to Matthew Mills, the Relationship & Development Manager: [email protected] 0191 374 4055
