Out and About: Ethel M Chocolate Factory

ethel M Chocolate Factory and botanical Cactus Gardens Take a break from the Las vegas Strip, and see chocolate

making at ethel M. Located on the southeast side of town, ethel M Chocolate Factory and botanical Cactus Garden is only a 15-minute drive from the Strip. Forrest Mars Sr. opened the location in 1981. This is the only ethel M factory in the world. He named the brand after his mother ethel, who made chocolates from scratch in her own kitchen.

The factory follows the same traditions of ethel’s kitchen. The recipe for the chocolate never changed. To this day, chocolates are still hand-packed into boxes. While you’re touring the facility, see chocolate in the making through the factory’s windows. In addition to chocolate, the factory also creates pecan brittle, peanut butter and caramel.

At the ethel M Chocolate Factory, visitors witness the time and effort it takes to create that perfect chocolate morsel. After seeing and smelling the rich aroma of these sweets, you get a sample of your favorite chocolate in the retail area.

There are plenty of chocolates to choose from. Select from white chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate with fillings like fruit, caramel or nuts. The store offers festive flavors and box packag-ing during valentine’s Day, easter and Christmas. If you’re purchasing chocolate during the summer, you’ll be given an ice pack so your treats won’t melt. Since the chocolates are preservative-free, the freshness of each package only lasts two weeks.

And there’s more. Just next door is the unique, three-acre botanical Cactus Garden. It features more than 300 types of cactus. Wind your way through more than 600,000 sparkling lights during the Holi-day Cactus Garden as ethel M Chocolates presents its 20th Annual Holiday Cactus Garden, Novem-ber 13 through January 1 from 5-10 p.m. Free and open to the public, there will be live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays as well as photos with Santa on Fridays through Sundays.

ethel M Chocolate Factory and botanical Cactus Gardens2 Cactus Garden Drive Henderson, Nv 89014www.ethelm.comHours of operation: open daily, 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Live chocolate production hours vary, but are generally Monday - Friday until 4:30 p.m.

It all started with an intriguing ad in an inflight magazine that caught David Boyarski’s eye. The ad encouraged people to come

to Mesquite for a golf vacation. Jane and Dave Boyarski visited mes-quite after a long, cold winter in Colorado Springs in which Dave felt particularly housebound. They didn’t actually play golf on that trip to Mesquite; this “casual” visit resulted in their new Sun City home, purchased in only three days. As Jane said, “it was the quickest life-time decision we ever made.” Dave was born in the Philippines and came to the U.S. In 1973. He joined the Air Force after college and spent twenty-four years in that career—eleven of them on active duty. He was a Transport Pilot, and then worked in a Classified Space Field that he still doesn’t talk about. Later, he was an executive with Lockheed-Martin.

Jane was born in Louisiana, but her family moved from there as an infant. She met Dave in Colorado Springs. Since Jane’s father was also in the military her later life with Dave in many locations wasn’t a big surprise. She felt lucky to get to be a stay at home mom to son, Daniel. In Mesquite, the initial plan was to be snowbirds, but after spending two winters here, they went back to Colorado Springs and sold their home and assumed full time residency here—just over two months ago. Jane and Dave both enjoy Tai-Chi at the Pioneer Center. An amateur photographer, Dave likes to walk most mornings, and takes his camera with him. Outdoor scenes and wildlife are his preferences, but he also helps out in Sun City, acting as a resident photographer for many of the events at the Pioneer Center. Jane is delighted with her quilt group friends—now about 30 members strong, with beginners and very talented experts. She is also a “voracious” reader. The Boyarskis plan a major trip each year. It was Maui for whale watching this year, next year it will be Ecuador, staying in the Amazon and Galapagos. Watch for Dave’s travel and wildlife photography presentation on November 18. He will also discuss different photo options, putting slide and photo shows together with music, and many innovations.

If you’re bored here at Sun City Mesquite, you’re not looking in the right places! Although there is a plethora of events, tours, hikes, con-certs, parties, dinner etc., etc., etc. available here in Sun City, there are also a few things happening at the local casinos that you may not know about that are fun and mostly free!

First, almost everyone knows about the free comedy show at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings at the Casa blanca, in their beautiful showroom.

There are two comedians performing and the show lasts about an hour. The Show of Shows is a one hour variety show at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, again in the showroom of the

Casa blanca. This show always includes music with various entertainers ranging from comedians to singers and magicians. There is a $5.00 fee, however if you show your players card (available for free at any rewards desk), the $5.00 fee is refunded in free play on your card.

The Skydome Lounge at the Casa blanca showcases John brooks, an elvis impersonator every Tuesday evening from 7:00 – 11:00 p.m., free.

occasionally, the Casa blanca also presents different musical groups at their Casapalooza events on Fridays in the pool area. Most of these are during summer.

At the virgin river, rio Caliente is scheduled every Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. in the river Lounge. Pop and rock in a Spanish theme. Free

Not free, but of note, is the 50% off bowling games and shoes at the virgin river for seniors 55+. bowling and shoes for about $2.00 every Sunday and Monday.

The newly redecorated and recently opened Seasons Lounge at the eureka has an indoor patio which is gorgeous, as well as a new sound system and larger seating area. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Free.

Get out and get busy, there’s a lot to do here at little or no cost.

Conestoga update 2013
