Scholarship ReportsThree scholarships were presented in June of 2015, with the requirement that each recipient present a report on how the scholarship funds were used. Rhea Jensen and Patricia Kerek each received the Card/Alling Scholarship; Penny Lamnek received the Mildred Nelson Scholarship, and has submitted the following report.

How I Spent $1000.00 and more by Penny LamnekSomebody pinch me! I must be dream-ing! And what a dream….I was handed a cheque for $1000.00 and was told I HAD to spend it on my art. You have all seen the commercial “Start the Car! Start the Car!” I got to work on this as fast as I could before anyone could change their mind or I woke up.

My submission for the Mildred Nel-son Scholarship stated I was making attempts at learning how to use Acrylics and would like to pursue this further. I love the look of Mixed Media. I had taken a couple of workshops and was really struggling with the acrylic paint. I felt a week long course at someplace like Red Deer College Summer Series would be perfect to really submerse myself in this. Well, I could see the way the summer was shaping up and knew this would not happen and I did not want to wait another year.

First things first - with me anyway - is to buy some books. I purchased “Acryl-ic Solutions”, “Acrylic Revolution” and “Creative Collage Techniques” which totalled $94.00 plus GST.

I took in Samantha Williams Chalpesky’s free demo the EAC of-fered and this cost me about a gazillion dollars in the Golden Mediums buying frenzy that followed. I unpacked my hoard in my studio and stared at them blankly.

Our own Jan Fraser offered a “Play Date” where we could try our new toys and use her’s as well to get a hands on feel for them. I ended up buying ever more after that. They are SO MUCH FUN! And I had such great ideas. I

knew I could conquer this. But I still struggled with handling the paint itself. Deep Frustration was settling in with Despair hovering in the horizon.

What light through yonder window breaks? Why, it’s a workshop with BC artist David Langevin hosted by the Art Society of Strathcona County for about $225.00. The workshop is called “Mas-tering Acrylics” which he certainly has. He offered basic nuts and bolts infor-mation on acrylic paint. Now I have a better idea as to why my work looks like dark depressing blotches. They are still turning out like that but at least I know why. I would encourage you to look at his website as he has a lot of information on acrylics there. I bought some paint and medium from him for a little over a $100.00. All the gels, mediums and fancy stuff I had previously bought and none of it was what he recommended.

The ASSC offered another workshop in Acrylics by Terry Shaw, a member of the ASSC, resident of Sherwood Park and a real nice lady. This was for $90.00It was a lively fun class as Terry has a unique mixed media way of putting together her paintings that still come off in a relatively realistic way. I was quite pleased with what I was doing….until I got home and looked at them more objectively. They are very clumsy and super amateurish looking. But bet-ter than anything I had done before in acrylics. My watercolours are more sophisticated looking but I have been at that for years now. They did not come easy to me either; I had to work at it so I guess this is no different.

The total spending spree including brushes and canvas etc. would come to about $700.00. I will watch for another class and practice until then.

I would like to express my sincere thank you to the Scholarship Committee

for selecting me for the Mildred Nelson Scholarship. It is so much more than simply a nice sum of money. It opens doors and really does change your life. I am so sorry the downturn in our econ-omy put a temporary halt to the EAC’s ability to offer the Scholarships. I would love to see each member receive this and hopefully we will soon be able to offer it again.

Penny Lamnek

Thanks so much to Mohamed for sharing very interesting information on his summer of plein air painting as well as some

of his work samples. Notes from Mohamed follow.

Thanks!

The leader of the group that goes plein air painting every mid- August is Donna Miller [email protected]. Provide her with your name and email and ask her to put you on the list. She will provide you with the information.

Regarding the plein air setup: • If interested, first decide on the size you will be painting

and stick to that size because the equipment will be mostly specific to that size.

• Pochade box: Several on the market. Had bad experi-ence with Soltek. Also The French easel I bought was very tedious to set up and very heavy. Bought mine from http://alla-prima-pochade.myshopify.com .

• Sells several sizes. Mine is 11in X 14in (yellowstone U$389.00 + shipping +tax etc.) The only modification I made to mine was attaching a glass plate to the palate area.

• Tripod: need a heavy duty tripod and head as it suppors a lot of weight. Bought mine from McBain Camera. It is Manfrotto 190XB with heavy duty head and quick release plate (496RC2).

• Umbrella most suitable I found is Bestbrella from http://www.bestbrella.com. U$146.50 incl. shipping

• Found panels more useful than canvas because they are sturdy and compact, and light does not shine through when painting against the light. Panels fronm Delta.

• A proportional divider is also helpful $14.50 rom Delta

• A view catcher to figure out composition compare values etc is also helpful.

Talk to Mohamed if you want more information!
