PASTOR’S CORNER

I think we have all thought about the irony of Christmas presents.

By now you know what you have received for Christmas. So if you

were not surprised by the presents that you got, then you may not

be aware of Murphy’s Law about Christmas presents: “We always

get the most of what we need the least.” And maybe there is also

another one: We rarely get what we want. Nonetheless, it is still

quite exciting to tear away the wrappers and see what kind of gift

we’ve received, even though we may already know that it is a box

of chocolates, or a bottle of wine, or a shirt, or several pairs of

socks, etc.

Anyway, if you get your presents before Christmas Day, do you

wait for that day to open them? Some people are very pragmatic.

They always open up their presents before Christmas Day and

then see if they can “recycle” them a few days later. Why should

they wait another year to get what they really want?

But the spirit of Christmas is to give something precious, because

God gave us somebody who was precious in his heart. But we of-

ten act like a 5-year-old boy who tells his 3-year-old brother, “Let’s

play Christmas. I’ll be Santa Claus and you’ll be a present, and I’ll

give you away.” So much for giving away something precious …

To put it in a business-like way, the deadline for giving Christmas

presents is Christmas Day. Nonetheless, belated Christmas pre-

sents are still welcomed, but don’t wait till next Christmas.

DECEMBER 31, 2017

World Day of Migrants and Refugees The theme

announced by His Holiness Pope Francis for the 2018 is “Welcoming, Protecting, Promoting and Integrating Migrants and Refugees.” In his message, Pope Francis reminds us that “every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age.…” A special Mass commemorating the 104th World Day of Migrants and Refugees will be celebrated on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Chaldean Catholic Cathedral, located at 2 High Meadow Place in North York. Bishop Kirkpatrick will be the homilist for this liturgy. A reception will fol-low with a number of dignitaries in attendance. All are welcome to attend!
