FEAST OF APPARITION OF THE HOLY CROSSFEAST OF APPARITION OF THE HOLY CROSSFEAST OF APPARITION OF THE HOLY CROSS This feast is dedicated to the Apparition of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. At noon on May 19, 351, a bright, luminous cross appeared over the skies of Jerusalem, centered over an area spanning from the Mount of Olives (where Christ was betrayed and arrested) to Golgotha (where Christ was crucified). Awe-struck, the faithful of Jerusalem rush to church to give thanks and glorify the Lord. Bishop Cyril (later St. Cyril of Jerusalem) subsequently wrote a letter to Emperor Constantine of Byzan-tium wherein he describes the miraculous and beautiful scene. St. Cyril tells Constantine that the apparition is a true testimony of the orthodox faith of Christianity. Further, St. Cyril exhorts the Emperor that the appearance is a sign for him to remain steadfast in his faith, and to stop defend-ing the heretical movement of Arianism and its promulgators. The Armenian translation of the Bishop’s letter has been pre-served by the Church, and is read each year on the Feast of the Apparition of the Holy Cross. The Armenian Church celebrates this feast 28 days following Easter Sunday.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS The reading is from the First Letter of 1John (1:1-10) THE WORD OF LIFETHE WORD OF LIFETHE WORD OF LIFE We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us— we de-clare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. GOD IS LIGHTGOD IS LIGHTGOD IS LIGHT This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that GOD IS LIGHT AND IN GOD IS LIGHT AND IN GOD IS LIGHT AND IN HIM THERE IS NO DARKNESS AT ALLHIM THERE IS NO DARKNESS AT ALLHIM THERE IS NO DARKNESS AT ALL... If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one an-other, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. The reading is from the Holy Gospel according to John (7:14-23) About the middle of the festival Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach. The Jews were astonished at it, saying, “How does this man have such learning, when he has never been taught?” Then Jesus answered them: “My teaching is not mine but his who sent me. Anyone who resolves to do the will of God will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own. Those who speak on their own seek their own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and there is nothing false in him. “Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you looking for an opportunity to kill me?”

PASTORAL CARE: HOME AND HOSPITAL CLERGY VISIT Der Mesrob is always available and would like to visit homebound and hospitalized parishioners. If you or someone you know is ill or

hospitalized and would like to be visited, please call Der Hayr at (804) 405-9399 or the church office at (914) 428-2595. Please note:

when asked about religion at a hospital, patients should list them-selves as “Armenian Orthodox” or “Armenian” not “other:”

Today, please take a moment to remember in your prayers Lucine Adourian, Arshaluys Kaleli, Ani Karapetyan, Gale Perzigian, Catherine Papalian, Mary Aljalian,

Harry Nakashian, Mike Pisani as well as all the sick and recovering members

of our community. May God touch His faithful servants with His healing hand,

and grant them good health & recovery. Please inform Der Hayr if you have friends or family who are suffering any physi-

cal or spiritual distress and are in need of prayer, and he will add them to his prayer list where they will be remembered before “the Holy and Immortal Lamb of

God” during the Eucharist. We all need prayer – both to say for others and to be said for us.

Home Blessing /Dnorhnek/ is a beautiful tradition of the Armenian Church which is performed on several occasions: namely after the feasts of Holy Nativity and Holy Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, as well as on the occasion of moving to a new home. Schedule your Home Blessing during this Easter season with Der Hayr by calling the church office at (914) 428-2595 or (804) 405-9399 (cell).

The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?” Jesus answered them, “I performed one work, and all of you are astonished. Moses gave you circumcision (it is, of course, not from Moses, but from the patri-archs), and you circumcise a man on the sabbath. If a man receives circumcision on the sabbath in order that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I healed a man’s whole body on the sabbath?

Support Our Countrymen in Artsakh

Our joy in this hopeful season of Eastertide was shaken two weeks ago by painful reminders of the simmering danger to life in Armenia’s border regions. Armenians throughout the world have been moved by the terrible news that border towns in Nagorno-Karabagh (Artsakh) were shelled by the Azerbaijani army. The resumption of military operations against Nagorno-Karabagh has led to a loss of both 93 military and civilian lives in the small repub-lic. Casualties have mounted among men and women, children and the elderly; numerous civilians and soldiers have been wounded in the attacks. His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, has asked all churches to begin fundraising efforts to sup-port the Armenian families of Artsakh who are being victimized in the hostilities. All our parishes have started to hold a special plate col-lection for this cause. Today will be the last plate collection. (Contributions made out to our church or to the Diocese, Memo: “Artsakh Relief 2016,” should be sent to the Diocesan Center by April 30.) We offer our prayers to our Lord to have mercy on our countrymen in this desperate moment, to strengthen them in defense of their home-land, and to grant consolation to the suffering and grieving. In Artsakh today, despite the decades-long diplomatic effort to end the conflict, death and injury through unprovoked violence remains a heartbreaking reality for many of our countrymen. We offer prayers for those who have died, and for the safety of the Armenians who re-main vulnerable to attacks like the ones this week. We pray, too, for the brave soldiers of the Armenian armed forces, who defend their borders at the risk-and too often at the cost-of their own precious lives.
