Arab Health 2011 11-15 Wales Pavilion Directory

This spring’s edition of the MediWales Review focuses on three special events, each promoting the innovations and expertise in the life science sectors in Wales: BioWales 2011, The Arab Health Exhibition 2011, and the MediWales Innovation Awards 2010.

BioWales 1-2 March 2011, The Vale Hotel, The Vale of Glamorgan

BioWales is one of the UK’s largest Bioscience Conferences and BioPartnering events held outside of London and has been running for 9 years. Held at The Vale Hotel near Cardiff, speakers include Wales’ Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor John Harries; Lesley Griffiths AM, Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation and Skills; and Prof. Paul J. Davis, Chief Scientific Officer for Mologic and founder of Unipath - the maker of the “Clearblue” pregnancy test. Last year almost 400 delegates attended BioWales, including companies and academics, with just short of 500 structured profile meetings taking place in the biopartnering event.

Arab Health 24 – 27 January 2011 – Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, UAE. The Welsh Pavillion: Hall 7.

The Arab Health exhibition is the premier healthcare event for the Middle East, hosting healthcare manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors. It provides these professionals with an arena in which to meet with some of the most important decision makers in the Arab world. With rapid year-on-year growth, Arab Health now has over 2,700 exhibitors from 60 countries including over 181 exhibitors from the UK. The show will attract over 60,000 healthcare professionals over the four-day event.

This year there will be 11 companies exhibiting from Wales. This is an exciting opportunity for Wales to demonstrate its global potential and build relationships with companies from across the world.

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) is the organiser of the Welsh Pavilion at Arab Health, acting as a driving force in establishing alliances between companies in Wales and their counterparts overseas. WAG also actively

encourages inward investment from overseas companies looking to Europe and the UK as a preferred international business location. Exciting times are ahead with a new life sciences team in place this year.

MediWales Annual Innovation Awards 2010

Now in its fifth year, the annual MediWales Innovation Awards has become a landmark in the Welsh Life Science calendar. On the 1st December 2010 over 200 guests, including high profile representatives from the life science sector, came together to celebrate the achievements of 2010. During the fantastic evening at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff, nine awards were presented: six industry awards and three for NHS personnel.

Welsh Medical Technology

Wales, despite being one of the four nations within the United Kingdom, makes its mark by having a rich heritage in industrial innovation and achievement.

Over 330 companies are operating in the Welsh life science sectors, with a combined turnover of approximately £1.3bn, employing more than 15,000 workers. The sector is still in a state of growth despite the tough economic times.

MediWales is the industry-owned forum, established to service its members - the life science and support organisations in Wales. Part funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, over the last seven years MediWales has become the sector representative and central point of contact, influencing Welsh and UK sector development strategies.

MediWales works with academics, businesses and clinicians (ABC) to facilitate their collaboration, to improve the healthcare systems in Wales, and to advise government on industry led strategy for more success in the future. Acting as a signposting and business support service for its members, MediWales can assist international contacts in sourcing commercial and collaborative research and development partners in Wales, to build relationships both at home and abroad.

The power of three

Spanning two days, BioWales plays host to a range of activity: there are presentations from world-renowned speakers, a brokerage session with one-to-one meetings, seminars on dedicated topics, a dinner, and a trade-show exhibition running throughout.

This international conference showcases the successes of the Welsh life science sector but similarly appeals to national and international delegates, covering globally pertinent topics from speakers across Europe.

BioWales 2011 offers an opportunity for bioscience industry professionals, academics and clinicians to promote their efforts, learn about the latest trends and developments in the sector, and make valuable connections. Collaboration between industry, academic and support networks is an important component of the UK’s strength in life sciences. BioWales is the perfect platform to showcase these relationships in a vibrant and intellectual environment that encourages further partnerships.

This conference has experienced consecutive growth since its humble beginnings in 2002, and was recently

heralded by the First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, as “exceptionally significant to the country.” BioWales 2010 saw over 400 delegates from over 130 organisations gather at the Vale Hotel near Cardiff and

488 one-to-one meetings took place through the biopartnering event. This commendable matchmaking activity has resulted in many successful collaborations and deals.

Up-to-date figures about the UK life science sector’s growth signal an overriding resilience against the background of a global recession, giving BioWales 2011 lots to shout about. Since 2009, local government and support organisations UK-wide have collaborated to create the UK Government’s Bioscience and Health Technology Database. Updated in December 2010, this database and accompanying commentary include detailed information on UK companies active in the Medical Technology, Medical Biotechnology and Industrial Biotechnology sectors. This project not only provides a valuable source of sector intelligence to inform policy and encourage inward investment but is an example of successful collaborations between key stakeholders.

BioWales 2011The Welsh Life Science sector is inherently innovative and collaborative with a remarkable survival instinct. UK-wide, the sector is growing and shows no signs of slowing its pace. BioWales 2011, organised by the Welsh Assembly Government, aims to capture these strengths, reflected in a distinct and highly relevant line-up of presentations and seminars.

This database reveals the continued strength of the sectors, which currently totals over 4000 companies, spread across the UK, employing approximately 93,500 people and generating a turnover of nearly £19bn. Comparing data between 2009 and 2010, employment has increased by on average 3%, with medical biotechnology posting 18% growth in one year and medical technology achieving a 4% growth.

The Welsh statistics of this database were supplied by MediWales and the Welsh Assembly Government. This research highlighted Wales’s most pioneering sub-sectors – diagnostics, e-health, wound healing, and assisted living – greatly shaping this year’s BioWales speaker programme.

The speaker programme is being delivered for the third consecutive year by MediWales, the life science forum for Wales. Debbie Laubach,

MediWales’s Project Manager, discusses how the forum’s activities have influenced the presentation themes. ‘A large part of MediWales’s remit is to facilitate collaboration between academics, businesses and clinicians – what we’ve coined ABC. BioWales has in the past been very bio-focused but this year we also want to reflect the partnerships and best practice coming from collaborations within these groups in the MedTech sector.’

Presentations will cover five themes: e-health (including remote monitoring, electronic and biosensors): the launch of the e-health Industries Innovation Centre in Swansea sees Wales pioneering in e-health support. Presentations will discuss the benefits and issues concerned in using electronic processes and communication to deliver effective healthcare.

Diagnostics – another leading sub-sector in Wales. Companies in Wales such as Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, British Biocell International (BBI) and 3M are leading the way in producing in vitro and point-of-care diagnostic products that provide considerable patient and clinical benefits.

Clinical Access – this session will showcase successful collaborations between clinicians and industry. A speaker from NICE will discuss the singular evaluation pathway and calls for collaboration and support to bring products to market. The session will be structured partly as a showcase on what’s been done in Wales, and partly focused on UK-wide structures to support procuring innovations into and out of the NHS.

Finance – a BioWales favourite. This will largely focus on venture capital investment opportunities.

Future Watch – an introduction into what’s hot and new in life science today

Building on the introduction and success of seminars in 2010, BioWales 2011 will see the original three seminars increased to six. The inclusion of these new seminars promotes the support of both home-grown and UK-wide companies.

Seminars will include: Finance – led by Finance Wales

Procurement - led by Welsh Health Supplies

Innovation – led by Welsh Assembly Government DE&T’s Director of Innovation, Steve Cod

Clinical Access – led by Sue Bale, Assistant Nurse Director of Aneurin Bevan Health Board

KTN and TSB Support – led by Tony Bradshaw, Co-Director of the Health Technologies KTN

Register for these seminars online through the biowales.com website.

Amongst the confirmed speakers at BioWales 2011 are:

Prof. John Harries, Wales’ Chief Scientific Adviser; Lesley Griffiths AM, Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation and Skills; Mirella Marlow, Programme Director – Devices and Diagnostic Systems, NICE; and Professor Paul J Davis, Chief Scientific Officer, Mologic.

John Harries, upon accepting his invitation to present at BioWales 2011 commented, ‘Life sciences represent one of the priority sectors of the Welsh economy. The success of the sector in Wales relies on effective connections and collaborations between the private and public sector; and BioWales promotes and provides the platform for this vital networking year after year.’

The biopartnering portion of BioWales 2011 provides delegates with the opportunity to meet potential partners in pre-arranged, private one-to-one meetings to discuss potential collaborations and the take up of new technologies.

Meetings are arranged through an ‘accept and decline’ system. It begins with a call for interested parties via online registration that is linked to the EU Enterprise Europe Network (EEN). The EEN facilitates technology transfer throughout the UK and Europe, bringing together those seeking or offering technology opportunities, as well as supporting access to European-wide research funding frameworks.

Each registered organisation submits a technology profile into a catalogue. Registrants are asked to view the

catalogue and select other organisations that they’d like to meet with, which is then accepted or declined, ensuring every company only has a schedule that is 100% worthwhile to them.

BioWales 2011 will be welcoming Welsh and national successes but also the new life sciences team at The Welsh Assembly Government. This new team is the result of the Assembly’s new strategy document, Economic Renewal: a new direction – a plan that identifies the life science sector as one of six major economic drivers worthy of investment.

This renewed focus on life sciences, combined with current statistics validating the sector’s worth to the UK economy, is set to make BioWales 2011 a timely and celebratory conference.

The Innovation within the NHS Award was presented to the Respiratory Unit, Prince Philip Hospital and the CDM Team, Hywel Dda LHB. The winning project tested the feasibility and safety of home telemonitoring for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) using the Docobo™ and Doc@Home system to measure pulse oximetry and temperature in a semi-rural environment. A successful randomised controlled trial of 40 patients, funded by European E-ten monies was expanded into a larger study with Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) funding. This award was sponsored by Wynne-Jones, Lainé & James LLP.

The Psychiatry Department at University Hospital Wales, Cardiff and Vale University LHB, was awarded the NHS Partnership with Industry Award for their collaboration with the Healthcare Learning Company Ltd and the Manic Depression Fellowship in Wales. They have developed a novel internet-based educational treatment for bipolar disorder called “Beating Bipolar”. This is an innovative intervention which teaches patients with bipolar disorder to understand their illness and learn life-long skills for self-management. This project was funded by a National Institute of Health Research postdoctoral fellowship to Dr Smith (funding from the Welsh Assembly Government) and by the Big Lottery Fund’s Mental Health Matters programme. This award was sponsored by Urquhart-Dykes & Lord LLP.

The last award – the NHS Judges’ Award - was won by the Histopathology Department, Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Cwm Taff LHB for their ‘pro align’ model of a breast tissue specimen, developed to enhance training in tissue analysis as a result of breast screening. Many components of breast malignancy are not visible to the naked eye and so intense training is needed in order to correctly treat patients.

The model contains pre-assembled carcinoma (yellow) and DCIS (blue) (cancer and pre-cancer), replicating a typical specimen which can be serially sliced to show the natural architectural patterns of breast cancer in 3D. Tissue sampling of the “cancer” and excision margins can be practiced without using real tissue.

ScanTrainer’s unique ultrasound simulator provides a realistic, touch-enabled training experience, allowing sonography trainees to literally “feel” what they see on the computer screen in order to gain real life scanning experience in a more cost-effective way. The haptically-enabled computer training modules enable the trainees to develop the complex mix of cognitive skills and eye-hand movement coordination without the need for an ultrasound machine, a patient, or direct supervision by an expert. Trainees have the freedom to learn by trial and error at their own pace, and gain unlimited opportunities to practice prior to exposure to patients – ensuring greater competency when interactive training with patients begins and significantly reducing the amount of direct supervision required.ScanTrainer’s first system is the Transvaginal Simulator and is available with both gynecology and obstetrics ultrasound training modules, as well as a range a pathology modules.
