History Of The Parish

St. Stanislaus Parish is the Mother Church of all the Polish Churches in Pitt-sburgh. At the present time, there are four flourishing parishes that were for-med from the original Church. These are: the Immaculate Heart, founded inJuly 1897. Holy Family in October, 1902. Saint Hyacinth on August 10, 1916.and Saint Cyprian on March 25, 1920. As far back as 1872 many Polishfamilies were scattered throughout the area. Some of these attended servicesat St. Wencelaus' Church on the North Side, others were members of St.Michael's Parish on the South Side. It was at St. Michael's that the first Polishmissionary priest. Father Stanislaus of the Passiomst Monastery, resided. Itwas he who took care of the spiritual needs of the Polish people in Pittsburgh. .

In 1873. St. Stanislaus Beneficial Society was established. This organizationwas instrumental in bringing Father Klawiter to Pittsburgh. They originally invited him to hear the Easter Confessions of the members. On August 15. 1875the Bishop appointed Father Klawiter to organize the parish. He purchased theold Presbyterian Church on 15th Street and Penn Avenue in Oct. 1875. TheChurch was dedicated m November of that same year. St. Stanislaus Kostka

was named Patron of the Parish. Classes were conducted in the casement orthe Church, with lay teachers doing the instructing. Father Klawiter remainedhere until 1877. He was succeeded by Father Bratkiewicz. and in 1879, FatherGratza became pastor. In 1880. the parish was entrusted to Father Parzych.O.S.B.. Father Stanislaus and other Passiomsts from South Side. In 1881. Fr.Hyacinth Lanz. O.S.B. was made pastor, assisted by Father Constantm. O.S.B.and Father Ephrem. O.S.B. In 1885. the Benedictines gave up the Parish. Fr.Parzych from North Side again helped out. In 1885 during May and June,Father Jaworski. C.S.Sp. was collecting in Pittsburgh for the Polish Seminaryin Detroit, now Orchard Lake, and helping in the parish. From 1885 to 1886,Father Lebiecki, Thomas O. S.B.. Lauth C.S.C. and Carolus O.M.Cap. were incharge. Then on December 19, 1886 the Bishop appointed Father AnthonyJaworski. C.S.Sp., Pastor. Fr. Jaworski proved to be a very diligent worker. Heworked indefatigable for God's glory and for the salvation of the people con-fided to his care, until he was stricken with paralysis and had to resign in1898.

On July 10, 1887. Bishop Phelen administered Confirmation for the first timein the 15th St. Church. In 1887, the Church on Penn Avenue wa$ sold to theKnights of St. George. Lots were purchased on the corner of 22nd andSmallman Streets for S16.000.00, for a school and convent. A two and halfstory building was also acquired to serve as the rectory. On April 15, 1888,Bishop Phelan dedicated the new school and convent in honor of St.Stanislaus Kostka.

On April 21, 1888 the First High Mass was celebrated in the school hall onthe third floor, used for the time being for church purposes.

On July 1. 1888. the St. Casimir Society for young men was organized.On Sept. 9, 1888, the congregation of the Children of Mary was officially

established.On the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost in 1888, the Way of the Cross was

canonically erected. Five Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo from Silesia tookcharge of the parochial school. The first attendance consisted of 300 pupils.

On May 19, 1889 and again on March 27, 1890. Confirmation was given byBishop Phelan in the school Church on the third floor.

On April 12, 1891. thirteen acres of land were purchased for S5.200.00 for acemetery in Shaler Township.

In 1891. a lot on 21st and Smallman Streets was bought forS17.000.00 foranew church.

On the twelfth Sunday after Pentecost in the year 1891, the corner stone ofThe church was laid by Bishop Phelan. Father John T. Murphy, C.S.Sp., laterAffrican Bishop, preached the sermon in English, and Fr. R. Wieder in Polish.

On July 31st, 1892. the new Church was dedicated. Bishop Kneianpreached and Father John Otten was celebrant.

Because of the increasing demand for a more general use of the Polishlanguage the Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo thought it advisable to leave thiswork and hand it over to another congregation. They were succeeded by thesisters of Nazareth (Holy Family).

Father A. Jawcrski was assisted in 1887 by Father Gross. C.S.Sp.. in 1889by Father Weckel. C.S.Sp.. in 1890 by Father Griffin. C.S.Sp.. in 1891 byFather Szwarcrok, C.S.Sp.. in 1892 by Father Ryldewski. C.S.Sp.. in 1896 byFather Tomaszewski. C.S.Sp.. in 1897 by Father Strzelczak. C.S.Sp., and in1889 by Father Alachniewtcz. C.S.Sp.

In 1911. Father Jaworski died at the seminary of the Holy Ghost Fathers inNorwalk, Conn. His death was a saintly one. He was a picture of great suf-fering and resignation to the will of God. Father Jawcrski's nurse becameBrother Vincent in the Congregation of the Holy Ghost.

When the people learned of his death they offered Masses for his eternalrest. The money was collected for these Masses by the school children andgiven to Sister Superior. Bringing the money to Father Kwapulinski she said. "1had a dream and in the dream a certain person said, 'Give this money not forme. but for my enemies. They need it more than I!" The Sister glanced at thepicture on the wall and exclaimed, "That's the person who spoke to me. whois he?" "It is Father Jaworski," he answered. "Yes. brotherly love does exist inthe other world."

In 1898, Father Tomaszewski became pastor. He was a great orator with amagnetic personality. The people flocked from everywhere to hear himpreach. Many of his proverbs were quoted at home and on the street. He wasthe peoples' beloved Fr. Tomaszewski, their leader.

Father Tomaszewski wanted to accomplish three things: he desired toestablish a Polish newspaper, and orphanage, and a home for the aged. Hestarted in 1899. The newspaper (Wieiko-polanin) was established that year,but no longer exists. The orphanage was founded the next year. The house forthe aged was his unfinished business. The orphanage proved to be a difficult

task until Fr. Francis Retka, C.S.Sp., a great financier and dear friend of Fr.Tomaszewski, put it on a sound basis. However, Fr. Tomaszewski was con-sidered then, and is so considered now, as the rightful founder of the Institu-tion.

During Fr. Tomaszewski's time, the interior of the church was beautifullyfrescoed. In 1900. a new rectory was built. The assistants to Fr. Tomaszewskiaere Fr. Alachmewicz. C.S.Sp., 1898, Fr. Kwapulinski, C.S.Sp.". 1900. Fr.Rachwalski, C.S.Sp.. 1902 and Fr. M. Retka. C.S.Sp. in 1903.

When Fr. Michael Retka was an assistant, his brother, Francis, came to visithim. Young Francis, then a student of the priesthood, met Fr. Tomaszewski.Father took a liking to the young man and gave him a twenty dollar gold piece.Then and there was born a strong friendship between the two great mindswhich lasted until death.

On September 1. 1907. Fr. Paul Kwapulinski. C.S.Sp. was installed aspastor. It was almost impossible to replace such a famous figure as Fr. Tomas-zewski. but Fr. Kwapulinski was a patient man of God. and he succeeded inhis task.

During Dr. Kwapulmski's administration the cheuch structure was almostcompletely renovated, the roof was repaired, new concrete foundations laid,the interior was frescoed, a new organ was installed, the school and conventwere repaired and painted, eleven acres of additional ground for the cemeterywere purchased, ahd a new dwelling for the caretaker of the cemetery waserected. The Golden Jubilee of the Parish was celebrated on November 25,1925.
