ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Data mining (DM) or knowledge discovery in data-bases (KDD) is an interdisciplinary area that inte-grates techniques from several fields including ma-chine learning, statistics, and database systems, forthe analysis of large volumes of data.

Orange is a general purpose machine learning anddata mining tool featuring a visual programming front-end for explorative data analysis and visualization, andPython bindings and libraries for scripting. It includesa set of components for data preprocessing, featurescoring and filtering, modeling, model evaluation, andexploration techniques.

R is an open source package for Data mining. It isavailable as a stand - alone application for Data Analy-sis and as a Data mining engine for the integrationinto own products. R provides a wide variety of sta-tistical and graphical techniques, including linear andnonlinear modeling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, and others

On completion of the course the faculty will be ableto Understand the theoretical underpinnings of themain data-mining algorithms.

Assess raw input data, and process it appropriatelyto provide suitable input for a range of data miningtools in R and Orange.

Critically evaluate and select appropriate data-mining tool (algorithm, model) and be able to applythem, interpret and report the output appropriately.

Apply the ideas from the workshop to proceed inthe right direction for their research work usingbenchmark synthetic datasets from UCI, IBM & alsoon Real time datasets.
