ICAL Master’s Program and ICAL Alumni

Association

For fifteen years Stockholm University has been offering world-

class advance training in arbitration through its master

program in International Commercial Arbitration Law (ICAL).

Led by Dr. Patricia Shaughnessy, the ICAL program has

achieved top rankings in global studies of LL.M programs. The

program has also been instrumental in spreading the

knowledge about Swedish arbitration law and Sweden as a

leading arbitration seat around the world.

The ICAL Alumni Association is a non-profit organization

established in 2013. The Association functions as a global

network for ICAL graduates. It also works to promote the study

and practice of international arbitration, by organizing and

hosting educational events and conferences in Stockholm and

abroad. Today, the network unites over 400 ICAL graduates

from over 80 countries, many of them working in international

arbitration or related fields.

The FDI Moot and ICAL 15th Anniversary

Conference Stockholm University and the ICAL Alumni Association are co-

hosting a major international arbitration event in Stockholm,

the Global Orals of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Moot

Competition on 8-11 November 2018.

In conjunction with the FDI Moot, the ICAL Alumni

Association is also organizing ICAL Master’s Program 15th

Anniversary Conference. The conference will take place in

Stockholm on 7 November 2018. The conference aims at

exploring new developments in the field of international

arbitration and at promoting the research and practice in the

field.

The combination of the FDI Moot Competition and the ICAL

Anniversary Conference will attract a large number of

arbitration practitioners, in-house counsel, academics,

government representatives and students from all over the

world.

The panel will discuss the latest controversies, breaking news and trends taking place in international arbitration.

11:00 – 11:30 Networking refreshments break 11:30 – 12:45 Session 2 – Public interests in international

arbitration

An increased number of commercial and investment arbitration involve to some extent an evaluation of a public interest. The panel will address whether international commercial and investment arbitration has the requisite capacity to address these concerns: “public purpose” or “police powers” exception, Public-Private contracts and partnerships, access to arbitration for other stakeholders than the parties and much more.

12:45 – 14:00 Networking lunch 14:00 – 15:15 Session 3 – Shareholder’s rights in arbitration

The claimant of today is no longer just a single corporate entity, it is a group of companies with innumerable shareholders. The law governing private corporations of national jurisdictions or

governing provisions in an investment treaty context dictate very different outcomes for the status of shareholders in arbitration as well as the admissibility and recoverability of their claims.

15:15 – 15:45 Networking refreshments break 15:45 – 17:00 Session 4 – How to handle parallel proceedings

As arbitral disputes become more complex, parties in arbitration are sometimes faced with the challenge of navigating parallel proceedings under multiple instruments in multiple fora. This panel will address a myriad of issues related to parallel proceedings, including the interrelationship between national courts and arbitral tribunals, the effect of national court judgments on issues of liability and quantum in an arbitration, as well as exploring general principles of lis pendens and res judicata in international arbitration.

A confirmation must be received from the ICAL Alumni

Terms & Conditions The following terms and conditions (“Terms and Conditions”) apply

to any sponsorship.

Sponsor Registration and Payment

Sponsors must complete the Sponsorship Booking Application Form

and receive a confirmation from the ICAL Alumni Association in order

for a sponsorship to be accepted. The Association reserves the right to

reject any request for sponsorship in its sole discretion. Contributions

by sponsors shall be paid upon receipt of confirmation from the ICAL

Alumni Association. Paid contributions are non-refundable and will be

reimbursed only in the event of termination of the sponsorship by the

Association.

Termination

The Association may terminate a sponsorship at any time and for any

reason in its sole discretion by returning any contribution paid by such

sponsor.

Miscellaneous

These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by Swedish substantive

law, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. Each of the Association

and the sponsor hereby submits to the exclusive jurisdiction of District

Court of Stockholm.

In the event of any inconsistency between these Terms and Conditions

and any other communication or correspondence with the sponsor

concerning the event, these Terms and Conditions shall prevail. These

Terms and Conditions may only be modified in writing by an

authorized representative of the ICAL Alumni Association.
