V. Measurable Course Objectives The student who successfully completes the course should be able to:1. Demonstrate knowledge of college level Spanish Grammar issues

The student's level of proficiency in this area will be measured via the electronic workbook assignments, and the chapter tests.

2. Demonstrate an understanding of spoken Spanish The student's level of proficiency in this area will be measured via the acceptable completion of the electronic workbook, the oral portion of the tests, and participation in classroom discussions.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of Latin American history and culture The student's level of proficiency in this area will be measured viaparticipation in classroom discussions and the successful completion of the Spanish presentation assignment.

VI. Support SystemsLanguage learning can be difficult and even frustrating. I want to help you

succeed. If you should experience difficulty with your Spanish study, there is a three-step process that I would suggest.

1. First of all, you should be sure that you have studied everything that your text and lecture notes have to say on the area where you are having difficulty.

2. If that does not clear up your confusion, then you should consult the helps available to you in the Lab located on campus. This is a free service of the college where you can find help.

3. If you are still having trouble understanding a certain issue, I can be contacted via Email at the Email address listed above. I will be glad to either help you via the Internet or set up an appointment where we can discuss your question. Of course, catching me during break or before/after class is fine too.

VII. Evaluation/Grading1. Attendance will account for 5% of the course grade. Aside from being required to actively participate in class and be a positive influence on the rest of the students, you will be graded on your attendance in the following manner:

0-1 absence = 100% for the attendance grade2 absences = 50% for the attendance grade3-3+ absences = 00% for the attendance grade

Three partial attendances count as an absence. A partial attendance is defined as arriving tardy, leaving early, or not being an active participant in the class session. Leaving after a test counts as two partial attendances. There are no excused absences from my class in the sense that all absences count toward the above attendance limits. I reserve the right to withdraw or fail a student due to excessive absences, normally viewed as 4 or more. Students missing the first class session are subject to withdrawal as “no shows.”

2. The in-class Conversation will count as 10% of the course grade. Students will be randomly paired and given a prompt to initiate the conversation the week prior to the conversation. A copy of the conversation will need to be turned in at the time of the presentation. Students will not be able to use notes or aids during the conversation. Due to the group nature of the assignment, no make-ups will be allowed. Please plan your schedule accordingly.

3. The Online assignments in http://vhlcentral.com will account for 15% of the course grade. The corresponding workbook exercises are to be completed before class time on the day you are tested over any given section. In other words, the workbook assignments covering the material that you are being tested on that day are due. However, I will accept them until the date listed on the course calendar. Please complete at least 20 assignments for chapters 1-5. No more than 20 exercises will be counted toward your grade from each chapter. Other activities are optional.

The grade is a completion grade. In my judgment, if you complete:Amount Completed Grade

85 to 100 100%65 to 84 75%50 to 64 50%0 to 49 0%

4. A 300 word Written Presentation read to the class during the assigned session will account for 20% of the course grade. The paper and the presentation are to be in Spanish. The read presentation will be graded according to the Spanish. The Presentation Assessment Sheet is included with this syllabus. Due to the group nature of the assignment, no make-ups will be allowed. Please plan your schedule accordingly.

The presentation/paper must have the following characteristics:●The paper must be typed, double spaced, with a separate title page ●The paper must contain references for all materials used as sources ●The paper may not contain quotes or phrases generated by a translator●The first section will be a 75 – 100 word introduction of you and your family●The second section will be a 200 to 225 word description a Spanish-speaking

Country that will be assigned during the early part of the semester● Bring two copies of the presentation to class on the night of the presentations

One for me to grade and one for you to read●The text of the paper is to be exactly 300 words

5. The five Exams will together account for 50% of the course grade. The tests are given the first 45 minutes of the class session on the test day. Please be sure to arrive on time and to budget your time while taking the test.

VIII. General Policies

Grading ScaleA - 100% - 90% D - 69% - 60%B - 89% - 80% F - 59% and belowC - 79% - 70%¬No “+” or “-” grades are recorded on Valencia transcripts

Make-up Tests1. Make every effort to take the test when it is offered.

2. Oral sections may not be made up if you miss the test. The value of the section will count against your grade for the test.

3. Tests are to be made up prior to the subsequent class in the Testing Center in Building 4, Room 248.

4. I will not permit a test to be made up after a subsequent class. Any exception to this policy will only be made in a case where there are extreme circumstances surrounding the situation. Exceptions are typically based on documented medical or active military related absences. I will make the decision as to whether or not the test will be given. I will also determine if the test grade will be lowered by up to one letter grade (10 points).

In summation:1. Do everything that you can do to take the test when it is scheduled.2. If you must miss a test, be sure to make it up prior to the next class.

Extra Credit and/or Dropping the Lowest GradeI do not drop the lowest grade or give extra credit. However, you may write “mercy” at the top of one test and I will count each wrong answer at half of its value. In other words, a two-point answer would be one point off. Use it wisely, once you have used it, it cannot be taken back. The mercy rule is only valid on tests taken in class, only one time per semester, and “Mercy” must be written at the top of the test at the time it is turned in.

Academic DishonestyAcademic Dishonesty (cheating) will result in consequences that may include failing the given assignment and/or failing the course. I follow the Academic Dishonesty Policy as outlined in the Student Handbook and the Catalog. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with this policy.

AttendanceA student who withdraws from class before the established deadline for a particular term will receive a grade of “W.” A student is not permitted to withdraw after the withdrawal deadline. A faculty member may withdraw a student up to the beginning of the final exam period for violation of the class attendance policy. A student who is withdrawn by faculty for violation of the class attendance policy will receive a grade of “W.”

NotificationStudents with a diagnosed learning disability are encouraged to see me to arrange the appropriate learning/testing accommodations.

Course RigorThis course presumes that you have no previous experience with Spanish. The course will be taught from this perspective. Students of all levels of experience are welcome in the course. However, if you have had previous experience with Spanish beyond this level, I would encourage you to speak with me concerning other options to allow you to make better use of your time.

Test ReviewsWe will go over what will be on the test the class prior to when the test is offered. I will give helpful information during that review. The grade box to the right represents how your test will be scored.

Mobile Communication DevicesI understand there are many good reasons to have laptops, mobile phones, and other wireless communication devices. Many of us have work and family responsibilities that sometimes cannot wait until the end of class. Recognizing that it may be necessary on occasion to communicate with others during class, please do not text, email, surf, talk, or anything else while class is in session. Feel free to leave the classroom for a moment to take care of any necessary communications. Florida is a “two consent” state concerning recording conversations.  Students do not have permission record classroom interaction and/or individual conversations.

Student Assistance ProgramValencia College is interested in making sure all our students have a rewarding and successful college experience.  To that purpose, Valencia students can get immediate help with issues dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, substance abuse, time management as well as relationship problems dealing with school, home or work.  BayCare Behavioral Health Student Assistance Program (SAP) services are free to all Valencia students and available 24 hours a day by calling (800) 878-5470. Free face-to-face counseling is also available.

Disclaimer The schedule, procedures, and assignments are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances. However, any such change will be clearly announced. Such changes are designed to deal with unforeseen circumstances that arise during the course. The changes will be intended to benefit the student and will not significantly add to the rigor of the course.
