The following instructions reference component item numbers found on drawing D-102-2181-X00.

SECTION 1 – DESCRIPTION

Milton Roy’s high performance diaphragm (HPD) liquid end overcomes the net positive suction head (NPSH)restrictions associated with conventional disc diaphragm metering pumps. This is accomplished by a patentedmechanically actuated refill system (MARS) that eliminates the process side support plate.

The MARS also does away with the need for field adjustment of the refill mechanism by automaticallycompensating for process liquid modifications. This, combined with removable check valves, makes the HPD anideal choice for any process in which downtime is critical. The HPD features a performed, PTFE Diaphragm thatis compatible with a wide range of process liquids and chemicals. The convoluted design of the diaphragm alsooffers extended life over conventional designs.

The HPD liquid end is particularly suitable for pumping costly, aggressive or hazardous liquids without leakage.

SECTION 2 - INSTALLATION

UNPACKING

Pumps are shipped f.o.b. from the factory and the title passes to the customer when the carrier signs for receiptof it. The customer, therefore, must file damage claims with the carrier.

The shipping crate should be carefully examined upon receipt from the carrier to be sure there is no obviousdamage to the contents. Open the crate carefully, as there are sometimes accessory items fastened to the insideof the crate that may be lost or damaged. Examine all material inside crate and check against the packing list tobe sure that all items are accounted for and undamaged.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

When installing, operating, and maintaining an HPD pump, keep safety considerations foremost. Use propertools, protective clothing, and eye protection when working on the equipment and install the equipment with aview toward ensuring safe operation. Follow the instructions in this manual and take additional safety measuresappropriate to the liquid being pumped. Be extremely careful in the presence of hazardous substances, (e.g.corrosives, toxics, solvents, acids, caustics, flammables, etc.).

MOUNTING

The HPD liquid end is shipped already mounted to the appropriate pump. Mounting, therefore, is simply a matterof securing the pump to a safe, level surface. For further information on proper pump mounting, see theappropriate pump instruction manual.

PIPING CONNECTIONSGeneralGeneral piping instructions are given in the pump drive instruction manual. No reciprocating plunger pump canbe expected to perform satisfactorily unless those recommendations are followed. Pay particular attention toplastic liquid ends, as these units are relatively fragile and can be damaged by the installation. For best results,avoid straining the liquid end by installing a very short section of flexible tubing between rigid, fixed piping andsuction and discharge cartridges on plastic liquid ends.

NOTE: Maximum safety and reliability may be ensured by protecting liquid ends and pipingwith an external relief valve installed in the system discharge line.

NPSH Considerations

The HPD liquid end is far superior to conventional diaphragm liquid ends for suction lift and many other NPSHcritical applications. Its patented diaphragm and advanced design refill mechanism give this liquid end truly highperformance in these applications.

For more NPSH information, refer to the Practical Handbook for NPSH, bulletin 220, but apply a 3 psia limitationand contour plate loss (instead of 9 psia) in evaluating applications for this liquid end.

TYPICAL PIPING

In order to adjust the HPD relief valve, it is necessary to have a pressure gauge and a shut off valve installed inthe discharge line. The pressure gauge must have a higher range than the desired pump relief pressure, and

should be installed as close to the pump discharge connection as possible. The shut off valve should be installeddownstream of the pressure gauge. These items are not required for normal operation, but for ease of pumpmaintenance and adjustment, it is suggested that they be permanently piped into the line.

Be sure to see the instructions in the appropriate pump instruction manual for additional typical pipinginstructions.

CONVERSION PROCEDURE

The following is the procedure for converting from a packed plunger or disc diaphragm liquid end to the low flowHPD liquid end on a Milroyal B pump. The procedure assumed that a preassembled liquid end is being installed.

1. Remove packed plunger, or disc diaphragm liquid end assembly from pump (see pump drive disassemblyinstructions in Instruction Manual (339-0007-000). Remove plunger adapter, gland cap, gland studs or boltsand funnel.

2. Place lip-type seal (330) over crosshead and position seal flush with original seal in crosshead bore. Becareful not to damage seal lip during installation. Also, note that seal is installed with lip extending towardspump liquid end (back to back with seal already in place).

3. Place a length of 2 ½” O.D. Schedule 40 pipe over crosshead and against seal. Using a soft mallet, strike thepipe to drive seal into crosshead bore until new seal is flush with casing face.

4. Drill a ¼” diameter hole off the vertical center line 2 ½” below top machined edge of the pump casing wall inwhich seals are installed. (Lay a cloth in casing to catch chips while drilling.)

5. Flush out all dirt, chips, and debris from pump casing. Clean liquid end mounting face on pump casing.

6. Loosely install plunger adapter (2020) in crosshead.

7. Depending on the type of housing, the adapter and ‘O’ ring may be required. If the front end of the pumphousing has 6 boltholes, then the adapter and ‘O’ ring will not be required. Use the gasket with 5 holes. Ifthe front end of the pump housing has only two boltholes, then use the adapter ring and O-ring and gasketwith the matching ‘ears’. Carefully fit liquid end assembly into casing bore while guiding plunger assemblyinto hole in plunger adapter.

8. Thread bolts (2050) into displacement chamber from inside pump catchall and tighten securely.

9. Bottom plunger firmly in plunger adapter against crosshead and then tighten adapter securely.

10. Install plastic elbow tubing connector (3000) into side of pump casing as shown on drawing. Install tubing(3010) between relief valve fitting and plastic connector.

11. Install pipe plug (340) in bottom of catchall.

12. Proceed to start-up instructions in operations section.

SECTION 3 - OPERATION

INITIAL START-UP

After installing the pump and the HPD liquid end, perform the following operations before placing the pump intoservice. Numbers refer to part numbers shown in assembly drawings included with this manual.

1. Disconnect outlet tube from relief valve (3010) and remove relief valve from liquid end. Make sure the O-ringbetween displacement chamber and relief valve does not get lost or damaged, and that the opening in thedisplacement chamber is clean.

2. Make sure that the capacity adjustment (hand knob or automatic control) is set at 100.

3. Rotate motor coupling until the piston and crosshead are in the full forward position (closest to pump liquidend).

4. Fill the opening in the displacement chamber (630) through the port uncovered by removal of the relief valvein step 1 with the hydraulic oil furnished with the pump, or with the oil listed in the chart below. Fill thechamber slowly, allowing air bubbles to escape, until the oil level reaches the very top.

5. Replace the relief valve, making sure that the O-ring is properly seated. Install the (2) relief valve mountingbolts into the relief valve mounting collar and tighten the bolts evenly and securely.

6. Remove the small square cover over the front chamber of the pump and fill the chamber with hydraulic oil(same oil as used in step 4) to a level equal to the top of the oil seal which surrounds the crosshead.

7. Replace the relief valve outlet tube and the front chamber cover.

8. The pump liquid end hydraulic oil servicing is now complete.

9. Before placing pump into operation, please refer to the instruction manual furnished along with this manual,which covers the lubrication instructions for the pump gear box, the instructions for bleeding all air from thesuction piping and pump head, and for proper direction of motor rotation.

10. Do not start up pump drive motor before filling gearbox with oil or serious damage will occur.

RELIEF VALVE ADJUSTMENT

All HPD liquid ends have a built in relief valve that allows hydraulic fluid to return to the hydraulic fluid reservoir ifexcessive pressure builds up in the discharge line. This effectively stops the pump from pumping, since theforward stroke of the piston will not displace the hydraulic fluid and force the diaphragm to flex. Please read the“Principle of Operation” and see Figures 1 and 2 for more information.

The HPD liquid end relief valve may be adjusted to operating conditions by the following procedure. Adjust therelief valve after first installing the pump and after any maintenance procedures.

WARNING:The pressure relief valve (1040) is factory set to open at a pressure slightly above the pumpmaximum operating discharge pressure; never set the valve at any greater pressure.

1. A pressure gauge and shut off valve must be installed in the discharge line to complete this procedure. If thenecessary equipment is not installed, refer to the “Typical Piping” instructions in Section 2.

2. Make sure shut off valve is open. Start pump and pump process liquid to drain or other safe point toestablish proper pumping action.

3. Set capacity control at 30%.

4. Close shut off valve (“dead head” the pump) and closely watch the pressure increase on the pressure gauge.If pressure exceeds desired value, quickly open shut off valve to relieve pressure in line.

WARNING: Keep hands away from reciprocating plunger and crosshead.

WARNING: Do not leave pump operating unattended with shut off valve closed! Excessive pressurecan build quickly, possibly causing severe damage to pump and/or piping. Since therelief valve is not yet properly adjusted, it can not be relied on to limit excessivepressure build-up. Be sure to watch pressure gauge very carefully and open shut offvalve immediately if excessive pressure develops.

5. With shut off valve still closed, loosen relief valve adjusting screw located on top of valve until the maximumpressure gauge reading reaches and maintains the relief valve pressure setting desired.

6. After setting relief valve, make sure shut off valve is fully open. Remove pressure gauge from line or leave inplace, as desired, and place pump in routine service.

7. The low flow diaphragm head is equipped with an air bleed purge valve built in just below the discharge port.(Item 1070). The purpose of this device is to vent entrapped air from the diaphragm head during primingand start-up. This end of this fitting will accept a ¼” inside diameter flexible tubing in order to pipe off thesolution to a non-hazardous location. Immediately after priming, the fitting should be tightened.

WARNING - Never open this valve during pressurized pump operation!

SECTION 4 - MAINTENANCE

DIAPHRAGM REPLACEMENT

The low flow HPD diaphragm is extremely durable and often lasts for many years of service. As a preventivemeasure, however, Milton Roy Company recommends that the diaphragm be replaced yearly to coincide withannual check valve replacement. The following is the diaphragm replacement procedure:

1. Stop pump and relieve all pressure from system. Isolate the liquid end from all sources of process liquid withappropriate valving and purge liquid end of all process fluid.

2. Disconnect both the suction inlet and discharge outlet from the piping system.

3. Remove the catchall cover and drain catchall of hydraulic oil by removing pipe plug (340) at bottom of casing.(Note: Approximately one pint of oil will still be present in the contour plate area which will be released whenthe diaphragm is removed. Prepare your work area accordingly.)

4. Remove the diaphragm head bolts that hold the head to the displacement chamber and remove diaphragmhead.

5. Remove the diaphragm. Clean all sealing surfaces.

6. When replacing diaphragm, make sure that contour plate assembly (650) is installed so that orientation pinon back of contour plate fits into mating hold in displacement chamber.

7. The formed diaphragm should be installed so that its shape conforms to the contour plate and thecontainment ‘O’ ring should also be replaced, if so equipped.

8. Reinstall head on displacement chamber making sure that directional arrows on check valve bodies arepointing up. Lubricate head bolts with pump gear oil or equivalent prior to reassembly. Torque bolts in acrisscross sequence to 50ft-lb. Repeat crisscross sequence torquing bolts to final torque of 90/100 ft.-lb.

9. Reconnect suction inlet and discharge outlet to piping system.

10. Fill the liquid end with hydraulic oil (refer to above “INITIAL START-UP” procedure).

HYDRAULIC OIL REPLACEMENT

Inspect and replace hydraulic oil on same schedule as the pumps gear drive lubricant (or whenever diaphragm isreplaced). Annual replacement is recommended. While replacing the hydraulic oil, it is also recommended thatthe hydraulic oil strainer be replaced. The strainer, (990) which screws into the displacement chamber canbecome fouled or clogged over time.

MARS REFILL VALVE (640)

The MARS refill valve assembly (640) requires no periodic maintenance. Clean hydraulic oil is critical for properoperation. These valves can be removed from the displacement chamber using a wrench on the hex. Do notattempt removal by prying.To reinstall the valve, replace the O-ring. Lubricate the ring and displacement chamber liberally with oil.Screw the valve back into the chamber. If the valve is damaged or broken, replace the entire assembly.

RECOMMENDED SPARE PARTS To avoid delays in repairs, the following spare parts should be ordered for each pump:

1 Routine Preventive Maintenance Kit

Parts orders must include the following information:

1. Quantity required2. Part number3. Part description4. Serial number (found on nameplate)5. Model number (found on nameplate)

Always include the serial and model numbers in all correspondence regarding the unit.

RETURNING UNITS TO THE FACTORY

Pumps will not be accepted for repair without a Return Material Authorization, available from the factory or otherauthorized Customer Service Department. Pumps returned to the factory for repairs should be clearly labeled toindicate the liquid being pumped. Process liquid should be flushed from the pump liquid end before the pump isshipped.

NOTE: Federal law prohibits handling of equipment that is not accompanied by an OSHA MaterialSafety Data Sheet (MSDS). A completed MSDS must be packed in the shipping crate withany pump returned to the factory. These safety precautions will aid the troubleshooting andrepair procedure and preclude serious injury to repair personnel from hazardous residue inpump liquid end. A Material Safety Data Sheet must accompany all returns.

ROUTINE PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

WARNING: Before any maintenance, relieve all pressure from system, isolate liquid end from allsources of process liquid with appropriate valving, and purge liquid end of all processliquid.

HYDRAULIC OIL REPLACEMENT

Inspect and replace hydraulic oil on the same schedule as the pump’s gear drive lubricant (see the appropriatepump drive instruction manual for this information). Semiannual replacement is recommended, and can bescheduled to coincide with season oil changes.

To replace the hydraulic oil:

1. Remove the catchall cover by unscrewing the four screws which hold it on.

2. Place a container under the pump catchall to catch the oil and unscrew the catchall drain plug (340).

3. When oil has finished draining, make sure that the area around the drain hold is clean. Screw drain plugback in securely.

4. Fill the catchall to the top of the oil seal that surrounds the crosshead with new, clean oil. Use hydraulic oilor any good quality type A automobile transmission fluid.

5. Replace the catchall cover the screw firmly in place.

NOTE: It is not necessary to purge the liquid end displacement chamber of oil during annual oilreplacement.

6. Dispose of oil according to federal, state, or local codes that may apply.

CHECK VALVE MAINTENANCE

HPD check valves are modular in design and can be serviced without disconnecting them from the piping system.At the user’s option, they can be supplied as either single or double ball configuration.

Milton Roy recommends an annual tune up using a Routine Preventive Maintenance (RPM) Kit. RPM kits containreplacements for those parts which are subject to wear; specifically the ball checks, check valve seats, gaskets,and the strainer. Replacing these parts annually with an RPM kit can reduce the possibility of unexpecteddowntime and will help to extend pump life.

Disassembly

WARNING: Before performing any maintenance on the check valves, relive all pressure fromsystem, isolate liquid end from all sources of process liquid with appropriate valving, and purgeliquid end of all process fluid.

After insuring that all system pressure has been relieved and that all hazardous process liquids have been flushedfrom the liquid end, disconnect both the suction inlet and discharge outlet from the system piping. Loosen thefour retaining nuts (830) evenly, then remove. A slight force applied to the port connector (820) will providesufficient clearance to lift and slide out the ball guide (790), seat, ball, and gaskets (see the exploded drawing inthe RPM Kit brochure RPM 11.1 or RPM 11.2). Once disassembled, the gaskets (780) are not suitable for reuseand should be discarded.

Inspect the balls carefully. If they are smooth, round and free of deposits or pits, then they are suitable forcontinued use. Examine the check valve seats. The area of the seat where it meets the ball (the un-chamferedside) must be in near perfect condition for continued use. Any imperfection visible on the seating surface (pits,erosion, cracks, or a ball shaped contour greater than 0.030 deep) makes the seat unusable. If both the ballsand seats are in good condition, then the length of time between parts replacement may be lengthened. If theballs and seats are severely damaged, then the length of time between parts replacement should be shortened.

These PTFE gaskets fit between all mating components of the check valve stack, and are held in place withsealing grooves in the metallic or plastic parts. Inspect these grooves with a magnifying glass. If the groovesare deformed, dented, or damaged in any manner, the damaged part should be replaced to prevent leakage.Clean these grooves with s small, stiff brush prior to reassembly. Note that the port connections and ball cagesare not included with the RPM kit. If these parts are damaged, they must be ordered separately.

Reassembly

Replace the components in the orientation shown in the RPM Kit exploded drawing, using the new parts includedin the kit. Install an unused gasket between each set of thoroughly cleaned components. Tighten the stud nutsevenly by hand only, then rotate the components to insure that they are properly guided and mated. Snug up onthe nuts evenly to prevent cocking of the assembly and subsequent leakage of process liquid to surroundings.

CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE

Relief Valve Assembly

The relief valve assembly (1040) operates in filtered hydraulic oil and should require maintenance only if unusualcircumstances occur, such as if corrosive media contaminates the fluid. Assembly and disassembly isstraightforward. Field servicing should be limited to inspection and cleaning only. Repairs of this criticalcomponent should only be carried out by an authorized Milton Roy repair facility.
