I’m showing my age: when I was in high school one of our cheers was, “Victory, victory is our cry. V-I-C-T-O-R-Y.” No matter how the game was going we clung to our chant as if it would dictate the game’s outcome.

We have the same cheer at FCA. The difference is that we know we have victory in Christ: We are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37). Today we are still in the middle of the game. One day in the future we will raise our voices as our enemy is trampled in defeat.

The Toss UpFrom August to May, French Camp Academy is in full throttle. Good opportunities run next to sordid temptations. Good relation-ships wrestle with self-centered desires. The forward moves of a Christ-centered life are blocked by past mistakes. Just when victory seems to be one basket away, the ball is knocked out of the court.

Some days all our students need is an easy, loosely supervised game of kick-ball in the backyard. However, most of the time they need fair, consistent rules lovingly enforced. These bound-aries provide stability and security in lives that have been tossed about by abuse, neglect, dishonesty and fear.

Go for the GlorySo goes life at FCA. We have to be prepared for whatever comes next, offensively and defensively. Our students depend on us to stand firm and be strong, and the Lord makes us bold as lions but gentle as doves. No one sits on the bench for long as we go for the glory—God’s glory.

Our opponent has his own set of tricks designed to defeat us. Many students come to us believing lies: No one loves me; I’m ugly; I’m stupid; People just want to use me; I deserve to be hit; Jesus is a fairytale—and so it goes. The at-tack is endless to control the mind, heart and spirit of our young ones. So, we stand up for them, cheer them on, speak life to them and pick them up when they fall—all for the glory—God’s glory.

Our defense and offense are rolled up into one ball: This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith (1 John 5:4). As we coach and train our students we rely on the Word for our instruction and theirs. Satan wants to defeat them and us. He came to steal, kill and destroy. Jesus came that we might have life, so we show them the difference between life and death through faith in Christ Jesus—for God’s glory.

Passing the BallThe school year ended. The seniors graduated on May 25. Celebration resounded across cam-pus as parents, grandparents and other family members hugged and congratulated the new graduates. Tears mixed with smiles as students said good-bye to classmates and staff members.

How did we do this year? Was it a winning or losing season? The answer will come with time when we hear from alumni with their tales of joy, success, fear and loss. We have toned, trained and strength-ened them by God’s Word to be champions, but the choice is theirs. We pray for them to continue in what [they] have learned and how...[they] have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make [them] wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:14-15).

A New RosterThe 2012-13 season is over and the transition to the new season is bitter-sweet. Veteran members of the FCA team will not return (we will miss them!) and rookies will find their spots among returnees. We will all be challenged to con-tinue in faith as our opponent works against us. However, we know we have the victory; we are champions—I know that my defender lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth (Job 19:25).

For all of our French Camp students—past, present and fu-ture—we will be their cham-pions as we continue to live by faith, stand by faith, defend by faith and conquer by faith. u

ACADEMY

We have all been there, feeling like we are victims of some sort or another. Either we have felt wronged by a colleague, friend or family member. And let’s be honest, sometimes we even have felt that God has let us down.

Feeling like you have been wronged is a not a good feeling, in fact it can lead to all sorts of other emotions that usually are not helpful or godly. If left unchecked, these feelings can spiral out of control and end up leaving us empty, discouraged and depressed.

I have learned that self-pity, (when our thoughts are self-centered) is actually pride masked in its reverse form. I have also found that I tend to be this way when I forget who I am in Jesus. In other words, I get down and feel like a victim of circumstances when I forget that I am a son of the King. As a son, I am afforded some wonderful gifts.

The Bible describes many of those gifts given to the believer, (too many to name here) such as the fruits of the spirit: peace, patience, kindness, etc. as well as security for not only today, but for everyday through eternity. We are also blessed with the gift of mercy, compassion, justice, and love. To me the greatest gift though, is simply the gift of His presence (Himself ). He will never leave me, nor forsake me. He will always love me, even when I do not love Him as I should.

Many of our young people at French Camp come not knowing their identity. Whether it be from the loss of a parent to death, prison or absence, they often find themselves in the struggle to know who they are. This struggle is often revealed through their victim mentality. They believe the world is out to get them and that there is no hope of ever being successful or having a life full of meaning.

Fortunately, this is not French Camp’s first rodeo. We have seen this type of thinking and behavior before, unfortunately many times, in many, many young lives. However, we have an answer: Jesus.

God in His great mercy has used and continues to use this ground for His Holy and unique purposes. Words cannot express the deep sense of privilege that all of our French Camp team share in working for the King, who sets the cap-tives free. Jesus makes all the difference in a life. Jesus makes all things new. He gives order to cluttered minds, peace to

anxious spirits, and healing to broken hearts. And He does that here, at One Fine Place.

Maybe today you feel like a victim, or your thoughts are centered on your own situation. I encourage you to give your thinking to Jesus, give your situ-ation to Jesus, give your heart to Jesus. He will and does make all things new.

Thank you for your partnership in the gospel of Jesus Christ. You are mak-ing a difference not only in these young lives for today, but also for eternity.

Christus Victor!

Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. Kradeidra Lanae Cork, daughter of An-gela & Mark Miller of French Camp, has attended FCE/FCA for 13 years. She plans to attend MS State University (MSU) and major in broadcasting.

Presley Cousar (graduating ju-nior), daughter of Jeffrey and Katrina Cousar of Oxford, MS, has attended FCA for one year.

Amber Ann Dawn Cox, daugh-ter of Connie Cox, has attended FCA for 3 years. She plans to go to college.

David Lee Edwards, nephew of Tammy Fortenberry of Bran-don, MS, has attended FCA for 2 ½ years. He planning to at-tend Hinds CC and join the Army National Guard.

*Devin Andre Fong, son of Ma-mie Fong of Kenner, LA, has at-tended FCA for 1 year. He plans to join the U S Navy.

*Benjamin Hosket, son of Bruce & Kim Hosket of French Camp, has attended FCE/FCA for 13 years. He plans to attend college.

Elexus Capree Hughes, daugh-ter of Sheria Winters of Weir & Kenneth Winters, has attended FCE/FCA for 10 years. She plans to attend Belhaven Uni-versity (BU) and study physical therapy.

Samuel Lucas Jones, son of Doug and Janice Jones of Stew-art, MS, has attended FCA for 4 years.

Lake Chalmers Koenig, son of Jen-nifer Koenig of Gore Springs, MS, has attended FCA for 4 years. He plans to attend The University of MS (UM).

*Christopher Mark May, son of Steve & Monica May of Eupora, MS-, has attended FCA for two years. He plans to attend Holmes CC, University of Southern MS and establish a career in the en-tertainment industry.

*D’Erra McClure-Carter, daugh ter of Linda Rose McClure of Port Gibson, MS, has attended FCA for 3 years. She plans to attend Hinds Community Col-lege.

*Sonyae Danielle McGee-Walker, daughter of Marcus & Paula Smith of Corinth, MS, has at-tended FCE/FCA for 6 years. She plans to major in nursing.

Brianna Michelle Murphy, daughter of James & Alesia Murphy of Weir, MS, has attended FCA for three years. She plans to attend It-tawamba CC and MSU, major-ing in physical therapy.

2013 GraduatesValedictorian: Daniel Lewis WardDanny may be first in his class, but he’s not the first in his family to graduate from FCA. The legacy goes back to 1938 when his grandfa-ther, Lewis Ward, graduat-ed. In 1971, his father, Tommy, graduated. Danny’s sister, Kathy, finished in 2003 and his brother, Al-len, in 2006.

French Camp is Danny’s home and he began his school career 13 years ago at French Camp Elemen-tary. While in high school he has been hard to miss. During the football season he donned the FCA mascot gear, the Blue Panther, and kept the fans on their toes. He was on the honor roll President’s List all four years and was vice-president of the Beta Club his senior year. He was on the yearbook staff, acted in 2 plays and sang in the chorus and Sons and Daughters traveling choir

His plan for the future takes him to Mississippi State University next year, where he plans to ma-jor in Computer Engineering and minor in theater production.

One of Danny’s favorite verses is John 3:16—For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Salutatorian: Virginia Grace OvertonGracie is the daughter of Terry & Judy Overton of French Camp and follows her brother, Billy (‘11), in graduating from FCA.She has been at FCA since

her freshman year, been an honor roll student and received the President’s Academic Award all four years. As Star Student this year, she selected Sarah Brannan, biology teacher, as her Star Teacher.

Gracie’s activities have been Beta Club, yearbook staff and mission trips. She has been part of the mis-sion group to Beautiful Feet in Texas for four years and to Wales, Great Britain, for three years.

As a student at Mississippi State University next year, she plans to major in Biology in preparation for medical school. One of her favorite Bible verses is Jeremiah 20:9—But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed I cannot.

Board Member Toxey Hall, IIIToxey Hall, III, has served on the French Camp Academy Board of Trustees since May 1984. Currently he is Chairman of the Board and of the Audit and Investment Committee. His past appointments include Vice Chairman, Chairman of the WFCA committee, Chamberlain-Hunt committee, and Board Secretary.

Toxey graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1962. From ’62 – ’64 he served in Korea as a U. S. Army Captain.

He and his wife, Karon, live in Canton, MS, and are members of First Presbyterian Church, where Toxey has served on the Session and taught Sunday School for around 40 years. Their daughter, Lisa, lives in Madison, MS.

FCA is truly blessed by Toxey Hall’s faithful service through the years. His commitment to French Camp’s mission and growth has been a sustaining encouragement. u

Spring Track and FieldOnce again, the FCA Track and Field team took honors at the 2013 South State Track Meet and the Mississippi State Track Meet.South State results:Pole vault—Chelsea McDaniel, 2nd; 4x2 girls, 4th; 200 boys—Joey Storment, 1st; Alex Perilloux, 3rd; 1600 girls—Alexis Davis, 1st; 1600 boys—J. TennisThe Panther tennis team played against very talented teams this year, includ-ing the state cham-pions from last year. With a num-ber of beginners added this year, the years ahead look promising. Even though our district play did

not take us to state, we had a 6-1 record against larger schools outside of the district. Team members showed enthusiasm and put forth A-1 effort in all their matches. With that kind of winning attitude, next year’s team should take the court by storm.

BaseballThe FCA baseball team had a great year, playing close games with 1A – 4A teams. The Panthers finished the season12-9, with a 9-1 record in dis-trict play. The team came one game from winning the district champion-ship, losing the last game of district play to two time state champs Nanih Waiya after defeating them 3-0 earlier in the year. u

Competitive events are a crucible in which sportsmanship—observance of the rules of fair play, respect for others, graciousness in winning and losing—can be exemplified by coach and athletes.**from Hugh Long’s philosophy for cross-country and track and field at FCA.

French Camp Academy is blessed with coaches and an athletic staff who fear and obey God, hold high standards for athletes on field and off, strive to achieve worthwhile goals, and maximize the team’s potential without neglecting indi-vidual talents and needs.

Hugh Long is just one example of the many which are called to serve as coaches at FCA. He has received Coach of the Year Awards in Boys Cross-Country and Track in 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2012. He has coached at FCA for 41 years. Hugh is pictured (right) with the 2012 Coach of the Year Award for Mississippi in the sport of Boys Cross Country. It was pre-sented to him by the National Federa-tion of State High School Associations on April 11 at a meeting of the MS High School Activities Association in Clinton, MS.

Abok Nebk wins first place in the Run for the Son’s female student category. Over 122 people registered for The Run which was sponsored by Camp of the Rising Son. Other winners were Joe Watkins, overall male, Karen Whitney, overall female, and male student, Tyler Peters. An open house followed with guests touring the CRS campus and participating in activities such as the climbing tower, leather crafts, canoeing, and horseback riding.

Brilliant Observation: Rainwater Star GazeBy Sylvia Dickson

Despite early rain and clouds, folks at the 2013 Midsouth Star Gaze were treated to some good solid days of clear, beautiful skies. Telescopes dotted the hillside at Rainwater Observatory where novice and seasoned astrono-mers gathered to take a close up look at the heavens above. Day and night observing, engaging lectures, planetarium programs, and tales from far and wide all made for an interesting, informative experience.

Star Gaze is an annual event at French Camp Academy’s Rainwater Observatory. Profes-sional research astronomers are always part of the program. This year featured galaxy re-searcher, Dr. William Keel from the Univer-sity of Alabama, comet researcher Dr. Donna Pierce and exoplanet researcher Dr. Angelle Tanner from Mississippi State University, as well as Jarrod Marsh and David Teske.

Thanks to the many staff members at FCA and Star Gaze volunteers, the 2013 Star Gaze ran smoothly. Next year’s event is scheduled for March 26-29, 2014. So mark your calendars now to come to one of the biggest, most brilliant, star-studded events under some of the darkest skies in the south-eastern United States. u

Mission to MexicoTeam Members

On March 12, a team of eleven from seven church-es left FCA for the spring break mission trip to Mexico. The next day they crossed the border and moved into accommodations at Getsémani Retreat Center in Acuña, Mexico.

For the next few days the team provided VBS programs for children in the morn-ings and afternoons at several sites and at night they spent time with the youth group. The Lord provided 35-50 children plus adults at each ministry site.

Our VBS program was done in Spanish and consisted of puppets, music, skits, clowning, Bible verse memorization, crafts, gospel illusions and balloon ani-mals. We made use of a portable puppet stage, sound system with wireless mics and recorded music.

In addition to the VBS program, team members helped with construction, plumbing and electrical work at the Acuña min-istry sites, as well as a monetary gift for the work. Plans are to return next year during March and to take some workers to do construction in addition to the VBS team.

This year’s team consisted of Sarah Brannan, Susanna Daven-port, Hannah McKnight, Emily Breese, Tyler Peters, Hunt-er McKnight, Anne Claire McKnight, Doug Herring, Tami McKnight, Tim and Leslie Comings.

The FCA yearbook has been known by several names through the decades including The Bell, The Bulldog, The White Panther and The Panther. In 1959, the name Lux Vitae, Latin for Light of Life, was adopted. The 2013 issue will be the 55th

by this name.

This spring, our yearbook staff and spon-sor attended the spring con-vention of The Mississippi Scholastic Press Association at Ole Miss. The MSPA exists to support, pro-mote and nurture journalism in a high school setting through workshops, competitions, conventions and online aids and advice.

At the convention, FCA competed with 13 1A-4A schools and received the following five awards for the 2011-12 Yearbook: First in photography, first in copy, second in theme, second in general excellence and second in art.

Tough Game: True CallingBy Sylvia Dickson

Josie Cooke attended French Camp Academy from 1987–1993, gradu-ated salutatorian of her class and is a FCA Hall of Fame member. While at FCA she played basketball, ran track and was a cheerleader.

Josie received a dual B.A. in Psychol-ogy and Visual Arts from Loyola University New Orleans and a Mas-ters in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern Missis-sippi. In 2010, she earned a Doctor-ate from Colorado State University, followed by a postdoctoral fellow-ship at the Counseling and Wellness Center at the University of Florida with an emphasis in Sport Psychol-ogy.

Josie is a Licensed Counseling and Sport Psychologist, an Association for Applied Sport Psychology certi-fied sport psychology consultant and a clinical hypnotherapist. Presently, she is the Counseling and Sport Psychologist for The University of Mississippi Athletic Department. Also, she has earned a place on the U.S. Olympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry to work with Olympic teams and athletes.

Josie had this to say about FCA: FCA made me strong, in-dependent, and able to take care of myself…being in a dorm with so many girls developed in me the fervent curiosity about people and relationships that led me into psy-chology. The sports I played there

were an awesome outlet and I was able to continue that throughout my life. My coach, Lynn Stegall, instilled in me a value for mental toughness and the mental side of athletics. I learned the importance of commitment and perseverance in academics and I was able to apply the strong work ethic I had learned to obtain my doctorate as well as ongoing certifications and specialty skills.

Coach McKnight encouraged me that life circumstances never have to dic-tate my dedication, motivation, or focus on my studies or pursuit of my goals. I also remember Mr. Lawson and Mrs. Hill encouraging me to use writing as an outlet and I not only still journal consistently but I encourage clients to use writing to help them learn more about themselves.

FCA provided a safe place for me to grow and without a doubt God used my time there to help prepare me for the work He has given me the oppor-tunity to do.  u

Josie and her husband, Steven, mar-ried in 2010. Steven is from Booneville, Mississippi and is an area manager for a large staffing company. They have two wonderful dogs and reside in Oxford, MS.

I’m not sure why but I have been unbelievably blessed with an incredibly rich life by God and I am so grateful.

The sun was shining brightly on Saturday, May 4, as FCA alumni gathered at the King Auditorium. Former students from near and far waved, hugged and chattered away as they savored Miss Annie’s cinnamon rolls and hot coffee.

The business meeting was short and sweet. Lance Ragsdale, Administrator of Alumni Affairs, opened the meeting with prayer. New officers were announced by Lisa Ed-wards Henning, outgoing president and Panther fanatic. Alumni then made their way to the dining hall for a satisfying barbeque lunch.

First Presbyterian Church Starkville Men of the Church provided and grilled the sumptuous chicken. Southern Flair gospel bluegrass band provided entertainment

during the luncheon. The new Queen (Presi-dent) of the Alumni Association, Tonya Bar-low, made her first appearance and presented Sarah Skidmore with the Young Alumnus of the Year Award and Tony Thomas presented the Alumnus of the Year to Larry Hipp.

Sarah Roberts Skidmore, class of 2000, is the daughter of Terry and Mary Rob-erts. She is married to Josh Skidmore, FCA graduate of 1997. They have two chil-dren Jillian (8) and Josiah (3). Sarah works as the registrar at Camp of the Rising Son.

Larry Hipp, graduate of 1965, returns to FCA each year with his wife Josie to attend the Early ‘60s Reunion on Friday evening and Alumni Day on Saturday. He and Josie have two sons and two grandsons. Larry worked at Scott Paper & Kimber-ly Clark for 35 years, and he is a deacon at Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile Alabama.

FCA Adds Middle SchoolBy Sylvia Dickson

When 7th and 8th graders return to FCA in August, they will no longer walk across campus to the public elementary school. Instead their classes will be officially a part of the French Camp Academy academic program.

The OpportunitySince its inception, FCA has offered private Christian education for grades 9 – 12. Begin-ning with the 2013-14 school year, FCA will also operate its own middle school. Grades seven through twelve, boarding and community students, will be under one roof.

For years French Camp Academy has worked in partnership with the public grammar school, French Camp Elementary to educate our first – eighth grade boarding students. Due to a court order restructuring the Choctaw County public schools, the 7th and 8th

grades will close in the French Camp public school. FCE will continue to serve our 1st – 6th grade board-ing students.

The NeedAs with any endeavor worth doing, this wonderful opportunity creates a need. And not just a need, but a pressing need! The new changes take effect in Au-gust, so your help is needed now in preparation for this transition.

As we step up to the challenge of building a middle school program in the space of 3 months, we must hire additional teachers, supply books and classroom materials, and find additional classroom space to accommodate two new grades.

Will you help us this first year with a financial gift? God is giving us a great opportu-nity to extend our ministry into another area. We gladly accept the challenge, and hope you will join with us as we serve young people and their families for the glory of God.
