After three epic encounters what new thrills does the fourth episode of the FC Barcelona v Chelsea FC heavyweightduel hold in store? In another eagerly-awaited confrontation the Spanish side hold a 2-1 advantage but with thesetwo outstanding teams nothing can be predicted with any great certainty.

Two own-goals• At Stamford Bridge on Matchday 7, Chelsea made light of their numerical disadvantage to take the lead through anown goal. That was swiftly wiped out as John Terry glanced a Ronaldinho free-kick into his own net before a tumultuousclimax ensued with the visitors pressing hard for a winner. Lionel Messi hit the bar and Terry twice cleared off the linebefore Samuel Eto'o had the travelling supporters dancing with delight as a late far-post header divided the teams.

Another 2-1 lead• Twelve months ago Barcelona had also ended the first leg of the first knockout round tie with a 2-1 lead but thedifference was that they then had to go away to defend that advantage. This time the second game is at Camp Nouand Frank Rijkaard's team will be confident of gaining revenge for their 5-4 aggregate defeat last time.

Eto'o's a winner• It was Eto’o who had also been responsible for their lead at the halfway stage 12 months before. Two weeks agothere were echoes of what had taken place then in the fact that Chelsea lost a man before half-time to a red card –Didier Drogba in Barcelona, Asier Del Horno in London – and also in the occurrence of own goals. Last year JulianoBelletti was the fall-guy in the first game as Chelsea took a surprise lead. Then substitute Maxi López inspired afightback, scoring the equaliser and laying on Eto'o's winner.

One win apiece• Aside from this season and last, the teams were drawn together in the 1999/00 UEFA Champions Leaguequarter-finals, with Barcelona coming out on top. On that occasion a 5-1 victory at Camp Nou with two extra-timegoals scored by Rivaldo and Patrick Kluivert earned them a 6-4 aggregate victory. The defeat remains Chelsea'sbiggest in 97 matches in UEFA club competition.

Formidable at home• The result also strengthened Barcelona’s home record against English visitors. In 20 matches they have only onceconceded ground, in the 1975/76 UEFA Cup semi-final when Liverpool FC won 1-0. Since losing 2-1 to Juventus inthe Camp Nou in the 2002/03 quarter-final second leg they have won six and drawn one of seven UEFA ChampionsLeague home games.

Impressive statistics• Three of those wins came in the group stage of this season’s competition. It was a comfortable passage for theSpanish champions as they finished with a nine-point advantage in Group C, their 16 goals establishing them as themost free-scoring team in the initial phase. At home they scored four against Udinese Calcio, five against PanathinaikosFC and three against Werder Bremen.

Last-eight regulars• If Chelsea go out it will be the first time in four seasons of UEFA Champions League combat that they have failedto reach the quarter-final stage. Last year they progressed to the semi-finals for the second successive year, losingto eventual winners Liverpool by a single goal on aggregate.

• This season the English rivals faced each other again after they were paired together in Group G. Two goallessdraws ensued but it was Liverpool who won the group with Chelsea finishing as runners-up, a single point behind. That was largely down to a 1-0 defeat in Spain, their last visit to the country, against Real Betis Balompié on Matchday3.

Poor away• Recent away games in the competition give the London side cause for concern in the Camp Nou, in a match thatwill be their 50th in the European Champion Clubs' Cup.

• They have won only one of their last seven - five of which have ended in defeat – which came on this season'sMatchday 5, a 2-0 victory at RSC Anderlecht.

Only win in Spain• And their record in Spain is not of great comfort either. Before this season's visit to face Betis they had played fivegames and lost all but one. Their only success was against Betis in the quarter-finals of the 1997/98 UEFA CupWinners' Cup when they recorded a 2-1 victory.

Knockout format• Clubs play two matches against each other on a home and away basis, with the team scoring the greater aggregateof goals qualifying for the next round. In the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team whichscores more goals away qualifies. If this proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played afterthe second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, the away goals count double (ie.the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks.

• In total, Barça have appeared in four European Champion Clubs' Cup finals, winning the 1991/92 competition againstUC Sampdoria thanks to a 112th-minute Ronald Koeman free-kick. Previously, Barça lost on penalties to CSA SteauaBucuresti in the 1985/86 season and 3-2 to SL Benfica in the 1960/61 season.

• In the 2004/05 domestic season, Barça won the Spanish Primera División by four points from Real Madrid CF.Villarreal CF and Real Betis Balompié followed in third and fourth place, 19 and 22 points behind the championsrespectively. By then, the match was delicately poised as Dado Pršo had given Monaco the lead after 17 minutesonly for Hernán Crespo to equalise five minutes later. Although Chelsea were then expected to make their numericadvantage count, it was Monaco who scored two goals in the last 12 minutes through Fernando Morientes (78) andShabani Nonda (83). It took Chelsea 44 minutes of the return leg to rectify the situation thanks to goals from JesperGronkjær (22) and Frank Lampard (44), but once more the English side failed to capitalise as Monaco grabbed a goalin first half added time through Hugo Ibarra before Morientes equalised on the hour mark.

• Then, last season, Chelsea again came up short, on this occasion against the eventual winners, Liverpool FC. Thetwo sides shared a tense scoreless draw at Stamford Bridge in the opening leg before Liverpool made home advantagepay with a fourth-minute goal from Luis García that proved enough to book their place in the final.

Head coach profiles

Frank RijkaardIf Frank Rijkaard's second season at FC Barcelona was anything to go by – a Spanish title and some memorableperformances in the UEFA Champions League – there is no reason why he cannot steer one of Europe's grandestclubs to even greater glory.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that his mentor as a youngster was Johan Cruyff. The Dutch legend groomed Rijkaardat AFC Ajax in 1979 where the defender progressed so quickly that he was pulling on the Netherlands shirt aged just19. In 1987, Rijkaard left the Amsterdam club and had brief spells in Portugal and Spain before committing the keyyears of his career to AC Milan with whom he twice won the European Champion Clubs' Cup. Highly versatile, Rijkaardplayed in midfield for Milan but in central defence for his country as they lifted the 1988 UEFA European Championship.

He returned to Ajax in 1993 and helped them, ironically, defeat Milan in the 1995 UEFA Champions League final inVienna. When he eventually hung up his boots, heads turned as Rijkaard was appointed coach of his country beforeUEFA EURO 2000™. A semi-final place followed but Rijkaard left his post to pursue a career in club management. His first stint ended poorly, as he resigned from Sparta Rotterdam in May 2002 when they were relegated from theDutch Eredivisie for the first time, although Barça were not put off and have since seen their faith repaid handsomely.

José MourinhoTactically astute and a superb motivator, José Mourinho has rapidly emerged to carve a reputation as the best andmost scientific young coach in Europe. In 2005 he was declared a high officer of the Order of Infante Dom Henriqueby Portuguese president Jorge Sampaio. The Order is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a Portuguesecitizen, recognising his achievements as manager of FC Porto and Chelsea FC.

Born in 1963, Mourinho started his working life as a teacher before being lured into football by Sir Bobby Robson aspart of his staff at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Porto and FC Barcelona. After a brief nine-game spell at SL Benficaand a highly successful tenure at UD Leiria he became Porto coach in January 2002 and immediately transformedthe club's fortunes. In his first full season at the Estádio das Antas, 2002/03, he won the UEFA Cup and a domesticdouble. The next year Porto retained their league title and sensationally scooped the UEFA Champions League bydefeating AS Monaco FC 3-0 in Gelsenkirchen.

Identified by Chelsea as the man to replace Claudio Ranieri, Mourinho moved to Stamford Bridge on 2 June 2004and went on to mastermind the club's first domestic title in 50 years with a record points total and just one Premiershiploss, adding the League Cup with a final victory against Liverpool FC.The Portuguese agreed a new five-year contractin May 2005.

Domestic news

Despite victories for FC Barcelona and Chelsea FC in their most recent domestic engagements, both coaches havethings to ponder ahead of their teams' meeting at Camp Nou on Tuesday.

FC Barcelona 3-2 RC Deportivo La CoruñaRonaldinho's brilliant free-kick after just two minutes gave the home side the lead, but Frank Rijkaard's team paiddearly for losing concentration as defensive lapses allowed Deportivo to turn the match on its head and lead 2-1.Swedish striker Henrik Larsson quickly headed in a Ronaldinho corner to equalise, however, and after the break yetanother Ronaldinho set-piece led to Barça's third goal as Samuel Eto'o converted his corner. Rijkaard decided to restLionel Messi after the teenager played the full 90 minutes for Argentina during the week. Gabri García was alsomissing from the squad having pulled his right calf muscle while Xavi Hernández is still recovering from a knee ligamentinjury, although Ronaldinho had fully recovered from the ankle problem which prevented him from playing for Brazilin the week.

Rijkaard said: "It was a curious match because all the goals came from set-pieces. I congratulate the players becausethe second half was much better and we deserved to win. It's an important victory but we do have to pay attention toa few things." The previous week Rijkaard's team had settled a score with Real Zaragoza, the team that eliminatedthem from the Copa del Rey, with a 2-0 victory that consolidated their position at the top of the table.

West Bromwich Albion FC 1-2 Chelsea FCThe English champions warmed up for their visit to the Camp Nou with an away victory against West Brom on Saturday.Second-half goals from Didier Drogba and Joe Cole set Chelsea on their way despite the loss of Arjen Robben to ared card, with Nwankwo Kanu's late goal insufficient to deny the visitors three points. The victory, in José Mourinho's100th game in charge, was preceded by a minute's silence for former Chelsea striker Peter Osgood who died on 1March. Defender John Terry admitted his side had ground out the result, saying: "We got a bit of a telling-off athalf-time, it was what we needed."

The win was Chelsea's second since the first leg against Barcelona following a 2-0 home victory against PortsmouthFC on 25 February. Since then a number of Chelsea players have been in international action, with Cole creatingone and scoring another for England in their win against Uruguay and Damien Duff on target for the Republic ofIreland. English international Frank Lampard, who sat out the trip to West Brom with a hamstring injury, has declaredhis fitness while French defender William Gallas returned to the lineup on Saturday and is likely to play at left-backin Barcelona as Asier Del Horno is suspended.

General competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA ChampionsLeague will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go tothe 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA forEuropean football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match.Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teamsplaying in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the foursemi-finalists €2.6m.The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m.This means thata total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to€18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

UEFA information

A new UEFA Champions League trophy will make its first public appearance at the traditional handover ceremony inParis on Friday.

The new trophy – engraved with the names of the 50 previous winners – will be presented by Real Madrid CF'sFrancisco 'Paco' Gento, a member of the first team to lift the European Champion Clubs' Cup. Madrid's 4-3 victoryagainst Stade de Reims Champagne - also in Paris, at the Parc des Princes in 1956 - was the first of the Spanishside's nine triumphs, with Gento playing a part in six of them. The ceremony will take place from 12.00CET in theSalle des Fêtes at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris.

Gento will be joined on stage by Steven Gerrard, the last captain to claim the old trophy after Liverpool FC's thrillingvictory against AC Milan last season. The silverware in Liverpool’s permanent possession was, fittingly, the fifth modelto be cast in the competition’s history. The original was awarded to Real Madrid CF following their sixth victory in1966. Other multiple-winners Milan (six), FC Bayern München and AFC Ajax (both four) own the other trophies.

Gerrard and Gento, embracing the competition's half-century, will then present the new cup to UEFA Chief ExecutiveLars-Christer Olsson, who will in turn hand it to the Lord Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, for safekeeping and displayto the public until this season's final at the Stade de France on 17 May - maintaining a tradition dating back to the1997 showpiece in Munich.

After the ceremony, the draws for the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be made in the host city of a final for the firsttime. No teams will be seeded, and sides from the same country may play each other.
