The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) was founded in 1972. During the two years previous to the GLIAC’s founding, several attempts were made to create a new NCAA Col-

lege Division conference. In 1971, the Great Lakes Athletic Conference was formed, but plans for the new conference were put on hold and several of the participating schools subsequently withdrew their support.

However, the idea for a new conference did not die, and since 1972-73 the GLIAC has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of inter-collegiate athletics for men and women.

The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University and Saginaw Valley State University.

Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oak-land University in 1974. Hillsdale College and Northern Michigan University were accepted as members in 1975, while Wayne State University joined in 1976. In 1977, the conference lost its fi rst member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Tech University fi lled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980.

After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was re-placed by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992.

After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990.

After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school.

The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to 1995-96, all member institutions of the GLIAC were located in the state of Michigan. On December 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pa. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995.

On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. Findlay replaced Oakland University, which with-drew from the conference after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status.

Westminster College, located in New Wilmington, Pa., became the 14th member of the GLIAC when it accepted its expansion offer in May of 1997. On June 30, 2000 Westminster left the conference as it changed its affi liation to NCAA Division III.

Tiffi n University, located in Tiffi n, Ohio accepted an offer to join the GLIAC in June of 2007. The two Erie, Pa. schools (Gannon and Mercyhurst) left the conference at the conclusion of the 2007-08 academic year to join the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

Overall the GLIAC conducts championships in 21 sports, 11 for men and 10 for women. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Executive Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member in-stitution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. Final approval of all GLIAC legislation is required by the Council of GLIAC Presidents.

As GLIAC commissioner, Dell Robinson is responsible for all confer-ence administration. He is beginning his fi rst season as the conference’s sixth commissioner.

More information about the GLIAC, its teams and staff members, is located at www.gliac.org.

2009 Outlook

The Wildcats are poised to take a leap in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Confer-ence (GLIAC) standings this season. Many

of the key components are in place to make this happen. NMU should be a better team than last year with all the new pieces and experience com-ing together. The Northern Michigan University football team is coming off a disappointing 2-8 campaign in 2008. The season began well for the Wildcats as they defeated Northwood in the fi rst game of the season (30-7) in the Superior Dome, but then dropped the next six games. NMU would not pick up its second win of the season until Oct. 25 when the ’Cats defeated Findlay (29-21). Bernie Anderson returns for his fourth year directing the ’Cats. Last year many youngsters found their way onto the fi eld for some quality playing time. That should provide the foundation to bounce back in 2009. Many of the key person-nel will be seniors as they want to go out with a successful season.

According Anderson, the 2008 squad learned from experience. “Last year was a tough year for us,” said Anderson. “We learned valuable lessons that will carry forward into the 2009 season.” Both of NMU’s two victories last season came at home. Anderson feels that the ’Cats are improved in three areas: the offseason program, the summer preparation and depth in personnel.

NMU fi nished 2008 tied for ninth in the GLIAC with Northwood. The ’Cats were eighth in the GLIAC in scoring offense (20.8 avg/g) and 11th in scoring defense (32.0 avg/g). In total offense, NMU averaged a little over 330 yards a game (330.5 avg/g) for eighth while on the other side of the ball the team yielded 400.0 yards of total defense to fi nish ninth in the conference. The ’Cats rushing and passing offenses were both eighth in the conference (141.0 yds/g rushing and 189.5 yds/g passing). Defensively NMU must improve on rushing defense as the ’Cats were 11th (194.2 yds/g). NMU was seventh in pass defense (205.8 yds/g).

Entering last season the question mark was who was going to take over for Buddy Rivera. Three quarterbacks saw the majority of the time with Carter Kopach appearing in all 10 games. He ended the season with 1,190 yards passing on 124-225-11 with nine touchdowns. Ben Hempel threw for 593 yards on 30-50-1 with six touchdowns. Matt Blanchard appeared in eight games and had 75 yards in the air on 4-8-0. Carter and Hempel return for the 2009 season. A dark horse in the quarterback race could come from junior college transfer Brad McClellen.

“We return most everybody on offense. We lost a couple of receivers, but we have some good people returning,” said Anderson. “The offensive line depth is a concern.”

Two of the top three receivers from last year return for the ’Cats. Zach Nichols led the 2008 team with 45 catches, 438 yards and four touch-downs. Dustin Brancheau was third on the team with 27 receptions for 271 yards. Anderson feels both Nichols and Brancheau are impact players.

Gone from last year is Dan Elmore who had

34 receptions for a team-high 492 yards and a team-leading six touchdowns. Four of the top fi ve receivers had 20 or more receptions in 2008.

Mark Bossuah was the leading ground gainer for the ’Cats in 2008. He had 660 yards on 124 carries in an injury-fi lled year. Two years ago he was second in the GLIAC with 1,285 yards. Brennan VanEffen, who saw time towards the end of the season last year, was second on the team with 237 yards on 44 carries. VanEffen rushed for a career-high 133 yards on 29 carries in the fi nal game of the year at Indianapolis. In the last two games, VanEffen accounted for 37 of his carries and 217 yards.

Three seniors will anchor the offensive line for Northern. Jack Rustman at center, Nicholas Owens at one of the guard spots and Jonathan Otto at a tackle are the main fi xtures. The other positions along the line could be fi lled by Blake Crider, Mike Levy, Jason Dumont and Luke Carl-son. “The offensive line is solid with starters,” said Anderson.

Nathan Yelk returns to direct the defense. He was a second-team all-GLIAC selection last year and led the ’Cats with 98 total tackles (61 solo and 37 assisted). Yelk was named to the Consensus Draft Services Preseason 2009 DII all-american team and was also selected NMU’s 2008 MVP. He registered six tackles-for-loss (-29 yards), two sacks (-14 yards) and an interception last year.

The ’Cats went out and added to the defense with transfers to fi ll some holes. NMU brought in linebackers and safeties. Added to the linebacking group were Anthony Echols, Demitri Stewart and Eric Wells. The defensive backfi eld now includes junior college transfer Junior Michel. ‘We will have more depth and experience coming out of there than we did last season,” said Anderson.

The defensive line fi nds returning Daniel Catalano and Jacob Reimer at tackles and Matt Forward at nose guard. Catalano ended the 2008 campaign with 22 total tackles (13 solo and nine assisted) while Reimer had 32 (15 solo and 17

assisted) and Forward 15 (eight solo and seven assisted).

John Blessing and Scott Avery are back man-ning the defensive end spots. Blessing had 41 total tackles (24 solo and 17 assisted). He also had six tackles-for-loss (-22 yards). Avery chipped in with 34 total tackles last year (25 solo and nine as-sisted). He had team-highs with six tackles-for-loss (-44 yards) and a three sacks (-29 yards). Ricky Neaves saw time defensively and recorded 23 total tackles (12 solo and 11 assisted) with three tackles-for-loss (-14 yards). Zach Gauthier, who missed some time because of injuries last year, is expected back. He tallied 45 total tackles (23 solo and 22 assisted).

Roaming the linebacking area with Yelk is returnee Mike Boren. He had 17 total tackles in 2008 (14 solo and three assisted). Edwin Knob-lock also saw time with the linebacking corps. He had 19 total tackles (eight solo and 11 assisted).

The ’Cats will have to fi ll two spots in the defensive backfi eld. Returning starters are Andrew Strobel (free safety) and Marcus Tribble (corner back). Strobel was second on the team last year in total tackles with 67 (48 solo and 19 assisted). Tribble was fourth on the team in total tackles with 48 (37 solo and 11 assisted) and he had fi ve tackles-for-loss (-10 yards). DJ Oke and Nicholas Devault both saw time in the backfi eld and could fi nd their way into the mix this year.

The defensive unit picked off eight passes last year. Gauthier led the way with two picks while six others had one each. The ’Cats should be improved on the defensive side of the ball as they enter the second year under the system brought in by defensive coordinator Randy Awrey.

Special teams could play an important part in the success of the ’Cats in 2009. Garrett Peck handled all the punting chores last year and aver-aged almost 39 yards a boot (38.6 avg). Anderson feels he was one of the better punters in the GLIAC. Anthony Leandri and Jon Laue took care of the extra point and fi eld goal duties. Leandri was 3-7 in fi eld goal with his longest being from 40 yards against Findlay. He was also 16-18 in extra points. Laue was 2-3 in fi eld goals with his longest being from 24 yards at Wayne State. He con-nected on fi ve of his seven extra point attempts. Laue handled the majority of the kickoff duties and averaged 58.0 yards a kick. Rockne Belmonte, a transfer from Eastern Michigan, could also get some playing time.

“This was another part of the game that needed to improve a little bit,” said Anderson. “I think that we have the people to do it now.”

It looks like as Grand Valley State is the team Northern and the other GLIAC schools will have to catch for the top spot. Ashland, Michigan Tech, Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State all fi nished in the upper half of the conference race last year.

The ’Cats hope to be the team that surprises everyone in 2009.

Nathan Yelk (#47), a preseason all-American, led the ’Cats with 98 total tackles in 2008.

Head Coach

Head Coach Bernie Anderson

Bernie Anderson enters his fourth season at Northern Michigan University. Anderson picked up his 100th collegiate victory in 2007 with a 27-23 win over Gannon.

He comes to NMU from Michigan Technological University where he had been the head coach of the MTU football pro-gram for 19 years (1987-05). He is MTU’s all-time winningest gridiron mentor with 93 wins (93-96).

Anderson led the Huskies to their fi rst-ever NCAA playoff tournament in 2004, and his 1999 and 2004 squads both completed the season rated among the Top 10 teams in NCAA Division II rankings.

“I was very happy during my tenure at Michigan Tech, but rebuilding the NMU program holds a special appeal for me as an alum and as a native of [nearby] Ishpeming,” said Anderson. “Michigan Tech was great to me, but I feel that if I was ever going to make a career change… The NMU position was one of few that would motivate me to leave Tech.”

“Bernie stayed in touch with the NMU program. He is an experienced, successful, and well-respected coach. He also under-stands NMU’s strong football tradition, and he is someone we believe can lead us back to the level of play we are committed to as an institution,” said Ken Godfrey, NMU athletic director.

As a prep player, Anderson was a standout in football, track and wrestling at Ishpeming High School. In wrestling, he was a three-time Upper Peninsula champion who compiled a 78-5-1 record. He was also a two-time all-conference football player.

As an NMU collegian, Anderson earned NCAA All-America honors as a Wildcat wrestler in the 132-pound weight division in 1976. He was 72-30-2 during his four-year career.

He graduated from Northern in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. In 1984, he completed a master’s degree at NMU.

Following his undergraduate years, An-derson began a teaching career at his prep alma mater where he served as defensive coordinator for a football program that went 11-1 and won the 1979 Michigan State High School Championship.

He was then head coach at Three Lakes, (Wis.) High School where he posted a 25-8 mark. His 1982 squad went 13-1 and was the Wisconsin State High School playoff runner-up.

Anderson began his collegiate coaching career in 1983 as an assistant at Western Michigan University. In 1984, he joined

the MTU staff in the same capacity. Three years later, he was named the Huskies’ head coach.

Anderson and wife, Vikki, have fi ve children: Brook Spindler (husband Brad), Brad, Vanessa, Benjamin and Bailey. Vikki at-tended and played basketball at NMU. Brad was a member of the NMU football team as a running back from 2005-07.

NMU Profile

Life on Campus

The University: A regional public, coeducational university founded in 1899, Northern offers learning opportunities to approximately

9,400 undergraduate and graduate students. Each full-time student is issued a notebook computer as part of tuition and fees.

Location: NMU is located in an environment unrivaled by any other, on the south shore of Lake Superior in Marquette, Michigan, voted one of “America’s Most Livable Communities,” with breathtaking vistas and 20,000 lucky residents.

Campus: Named one of the “Most Unwired” campuses in the United States, we’re completely connected with the latest technology. We’re

large enough to offer scenic spaces and 50 quality facilities. There are high-end specialty com-puter labs, a learning resource center, a theater, a speech and hearing clinic, a student art gallery and university art museum, a student radio station, public radio and TV stations, the Jacobetti Center

for technical programs, an ice rink, a swimming pool and diving tank, a rock climbing wall, an all-events center and the Superior Dome, an 8,000 seat stadium (the largest wooden dome in the world). But we’re still small enough to keep everything within walking distance, which is especially nice in the winter.

Faculty: NMU has talented faculty members and a low student-to-faculty ratio of 22-to-1. Our average class size is 23, our average lab size is 16 and our average seminar size is 10. Of all entry-level courses, 70 percent are taught by career faculty.

The Superior Edge: Learn to live a life that matters. Other universities have leadership programs, but NMU is the only university in the country that packs leadership, community engagement, diversity awareness and real-world experience into one life-changing program. In the Superior Edge, students design their own volunteer, work and learning activities (up to 400 hours). Any NMU student regardless of class status or major is eligible to participate for free. Each Superior Edge graduate receives

a student achievement transcript along with their academic tran-script. NMU grads with proven experience, initiative, ethics, integ-rity, multicultural awareness and motivation to make a difference gain an edge in the job market and admission to grad schools.

Residence Halls: NMU’S 10 residence halls are organized into living groups called “houses,” which include 40-45 students who actively shape their own living environments. Four students share a suite (two bedrooms and a bath-room) and all residence halls have great locations within fi ve minutes of eating, learning and studying areas.

Extracurricular: There are about 300 clubs and organizations on cam-pus, including academic, service, social, professional, religious and special interest groups. We also have a full program of club and intramural athletics.

Intercollegiate Athletics: NMU is a member of the National Col-legiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Varsity teams for women include basketball, cross country, Nordic skiing, soccer, swimming and diving, track and fi eld and volleyball. Varsity teams for men include basketball, football, golf, hockey and Nordic skiing. All sports are NCAA Division II, except men’s ice hockey, which is Division I.

Northern Michigan University made NCAA history when the Wildcats swept the top three places in both women’s cross country events at the 2007 NCAA Skiing Championship.

Marquette is 450 miles from the state’s largest and best-known city, Detroit, and

it’s truly worlds away. This vibrant but easy-going community

of 20,000 (which grows to nearly 30,000 with the return of NMU students each fall) is located on the shore of Lake Superior, sur-rounded by miles of recreational forestland in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

A winter paradise for skiers, snowmo-bilers and ice-fi shers, the region receives an average of 170 inches of snow each year, with a record of 319 inches.

In the warmer months, residents enjoy pristine Lake Superior beaches, hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, sailing, kayaking, scuba diving and fi shing on the big lake or on numerous rivers and inland lakes.

Marquette is a Mecca for athletic events. The city and surrounding communities host the annual U.P. 200 dogsled race, a qualifi er for the Alaska Iditarod, and the Noquemanon Cross-Country Ski Marathon. Both events at-tract top-notch competitors from around the world. The Superior Bike Fest, Ore-to-Shore Mountain Bike Epic race, Superior Shore Run,

Continental Cup Ski Jumping Tour-nament, occasional Olympic-qualifying competitions and weekly NMU Wildcat games also keep the local lifestyle active and involved.

Cultural, art, music and food festivals as well as numerous trade shows provide even more fun throughout the year.

Among the many accolades Marquette has received include:• All-America County• Most Livable City• 100 Best Communities for Young People• Michigan Cool City• 5 Best Places to Live and Ride (Bike

Magazine)• Top 10 Global Summer Vacation

Destinations (Sherman’s Travel) • 100 Best Art Towns• Top 7 Places to Build a Vacation Home

(Men’s Journal)• Top 10 New Courses: Greywalls (Golf

Digest)Beyond Marquette, the Upper Peninsula

has much to offer, too. Nestled between three Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan and Huron) the 384-mile long, 233 mile-wide U.P. has no shortage of splendor: from wildlife to waterfalls and lighthouses to lingering sunsets.

Its rich history of mining and forestry is still a visible and current economic force. Tourism, education and health-care are other major players in the region’s employment.

Some U.P. highlights include:• U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame (Ishpeming)• National park (Isle Royale), national

lakeshore (Pictured Rocks, Munising) and national historic park (Keweenaw)

• Longest running competitive ski jumping tournament and largest artifi cial ski jump-ing hill in the world (Pine Mountain Ski Jump, Iron Mountain)

• Longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere (Mackinac Bridge, St. Ignace)

• The two longest river locks in the world (Soo Locks, Sault Ste. Marie)

• The only ski fl ying hill in the western hemisphere (Copper Peak, Ironwood)

Marquette and the Upper Peninsula

Olympic Education Center: NMU is designated as the only United States Olympic Education Center by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Olympic athletes in fi ve sports train for elite international competitions while pursuing their edu-cations at NMU and Marquette Senior High School.

Accreditation: NMU is accredited by the Northern Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (30

North LaSalle Street, Number 2400, Chicago, Illinois, 60602; 312-263-0456). More than 20 academic programs are accredited by additional professional agencies.

NMU Profile

The Olympic Training Center brings world-class sports events to the NMU campus. NMU hosts the U.S. Short Track Olympic Trials and the Samsung ISU World Cup in 2009.

Athletic FacilitiesNorthern Michigan University boasts one of the fi nest collec-tions of athletic facilities in NCAA Division II, if not the country. A connected unit of three fi rst-rate facilities - the Superior Dome, the Physical Education Instructional Facility (PEIF), and the Berry Events Center - are used by NMU for the majority of its athletic events.

Superior DomeThe Superior Dome has been home to the Wildcat football team since 1991 and is the fi nest football facility in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, if not all of NCAA Division II.

The Dome stands 14 stories high, and encompasses 5.1 acres under its roof. Constructed of 781 Douglas fi r beams and 108.5 miles of fi r decking, the Dome has a permanent seating capacity of 8,000, but the building can hold as many as 16,000 people. The facility features a diameter of 536 feet, and has the ability to withstand 60 pounds per square foot of snow and 80 mile per hour winds.

The Dome features a retractable artifi cial turf carpet, the largest of its kind in the world. When it is extended, the turf has the ability to accommodate football, soccer and fi eld hockey. Underneath the carpet is a synthetic playing surface that fea-tures three basketball/volleyball courts, two tennis courts and a 200-meter track. The carpet is extended over a cushion of air and takes 30 minutes to retract powered by 12 computerized winches. Full setup of the turf is completed in approximately two hours. A new artifi cial turf carpet was installed in the sum-mer of 2009.

Berry Events CenterThe home of the NMU hockey and basketball teams, the Berry Events Center opened its doors in October 1999. The facility provides individual seating for approximately 3,800 fans, in addition to 16 luxury boxes, which includes a president’s suite. Along the perimeter of the arena are four large conces-sion areas, as well as standing room for approximately 400 fans.

When used for hockey, the Berry has an Olympic-size ice sheet measuring 200 feet by 100 feet. When rigged for basket-ball, the court sits on a protective fl ooring, which is placed over the ice, and seating for 500 fans is available courtside. Conver-sion from hockey to basketball can be completed in approxi-mately fi ve hours.

The Berry also features locker rooms and support areas for the men’s and women’s basketball teams and the United States Olympic Education Center’s short track speedskating team along with four general-use locker rooms. In addition, skate rental and changing areas are located on the lower level of the complex.

The hockey area includes a weight room, athletic training room, meeting rooms, locker room and support area.

Also designed to host concerts and community events, the Berry Events Center is equipped with moveable theatrical rig-ging and lighting.

ski trails in nearby Ishpeming and the four 5K loops at Blueberry Ridge in Sands Township, a few miles south of Marquette.

GolfThe offi cial Wildcat course is the Greywalls course at the Mar-quette Golf Club. GolfWeek named Greywalls the second-best course you can play in Michigan and upon its opening in 2005; it was included in the Top Ten Best New Course listings of all major golf publications. The Wildcats will also utilize the NMU Golf Course, which was formerly known as Chocolay Downs. Its ninth hole is among the world’s largest putting green, measur-ing 29,000 square feet. Total yardage of the course is over 6,800 yards with a par of 72. The course contains water hazards, rolling terrain and beautiful wooded areas.

Physical Education Instructional FacilityThe PEIF, as it is more commonly called, was opened in 1976 and houses the PEIF Pool, home of NMU swimming and div-ing team, and Vandament Arena, where the Wildcat volleyball team plays.

The PEIF pool features eight lanes and a diving tank with one- and three-meter springboards, as well as a 20-meter platform.

Vandament Arena, opened in 1995, is a 1,500-seat volleyball-only facility, one of the fi nest in Division II.

The facility houses an auxiliary gymnasium that the Wild-cat men’s and women’s basketball teams use for practice.

The PEIF also houses a two-level Recreation Center, which was opened in December 1999. It is complete with a climbing wall, weight room, cardiovascular area, two basket-ball courts, a tennis court, two lounge areas and a conference room. Also located in the PEIF are seven racquetball courts, a dance studio, athletic training facilities, locker rooms, class-rooms and staff offi ces.

Other FacilitiesSoccer fi eldsFour fi elds are located behind the Superior Dome, along Lake Superior.

Two are home to the NMU women’s soccer team; the other two are practice fi elds for the NMU football team. They are equipped with bleachers and a scoreboard.

Cross county skiingNorthern’s men’s and women’s teams have two designated practice locations, with lighted trails: the Al Quaal 3K and 5K

Wildcats in the Weight RoomThe Wildcats have excellent weight and conditioning training areas in the Superior Dome, Berry Events Center and PEIF. Each has specifi c training times, but players also have individual access to conditioning areas, as arranged by NMU’s strength and conditioning staff.
