GRAND CANYON

Longitude and Latitude:36.1000° N, 112.1000° W

Many people consider it to be one of the seven wonders of the natural world.

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 kilometres) in length.

At its widest point the Grand Canyon stretches 18 miles (29 kilometres) across.

STATUE OF LIBERTY

Longitude and Latitude:40.6892° N, 74.0444° W

It was dedicated on October 28, 1886.

The Statue of Liberty was designed by French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi.

The female form represented by the sculpture is based on Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty. She holds a torch and a tabula ansata (tablet) that has the date of the American Declaration of Independence inscribed in it (July 4, 1776).

WALL OF CHINA

Longitude and Latitude:40.6769° N, 117.2319° E

Rather than being one long continuous wall, the Great Wall of China is made up of a number of different sections. These sections were built by various dynasties over a long period of time from stone and other materials.

Its main purpose was protection against attacks and invasions from the north.

The Great Wall of China stretches around 6300 kilometers (3915 miles) in length. If you measure the length of all the different sections of wall, the distance is more like 22000 kilometers (13670 miles).

THE WHITE HOUSE

There are 132 rooms, 32 bathrooms, and 6 levels to accommodate all the people who live in, work in, and visit the White House. There are also 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 7 staircases, and 3 elevators.

At various times in history, the White House has been known as the "President's Palace," the "President's House," and the "Executive Mansion." President Theodore Roosevelt officially gave the White House its current name in 1901.

The White House receives approximately 6,000 visitors a day.

THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT

Longitude and Latitude:38.8895° N, 77.0352° W

No building in Washington D.C. is allowed to be taller than Washington Monument.

The original elevator ride to the top took 20 minutes. Only men were allowed in the elevator as it was thought to be unsafe. Women and Children had to climb all 897 stairs.

The monument is the tallest structure in Washington DC. Until the Eiffel Tower was built it was the tallest in the world.

THE OKC MEMORIAL

Longitude and Latitude:35.4728° N, 97.5169° W

Both McVeigh and Nichols were former U.S. Army soldiers and were associated with the extreme right-wing and militant Patriot Movement.

The Patriot Movement rejects the legitimacy of the federal government and law enforcement.

April 19 also marks two other anniversaries. Patriots' Day is the anniversary of the American rebellion against British authority at Lexington, Massachusetts, in 1775. It is also the date that federal agents raided the compound of a religious sect in Waco, Texas, in 1993. Over 80 members of the Branch Davidian sect died in a fire that began during the raid.

SMITHSONIAN

Longitude and Latitude:38.8888° N, 77.0260° W

The Museum is the largest of the Smithsonian's 19 museums and its Center for Earth and Planetary studies is one of the Institution's nine research centers.

More than eight million people a year visit the Museum's two locations, making it the most visited museum in the country. Since it opened in 1976, the Museum has welcomed 311 million visitors.

The Museum's collection encompasses some 60,000 objects ranging in size from Saturn V rockets to jetliners to gliders to space helmets to microchips. Fully one-third of the Museum's aircraft and spacecraft are one-of-a-kind or associated with a major milestone.

TAJ MAHAL

Longitude and Latitude:27°11′N 78°01′E.

The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, a city in the Uttar Pradesh region of northern India.

It was built as the final resting place for Mumtaz Mahal, the third wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

The name Taj Mahal means “crown of palaces”.

THE LOUVRE

Longitude and Latitude:48.8611° N, 2.3364° E

The Egyptian Antiquities Department housed in the oldest Sully Wing in the ground and first floors have artifacts like The Seated Scribe sculpture, a 4,000 year old Sphinx, and various jewelry, papyrus, musical instruments etc. dating back to the Pharaonic era.

In the Near Eastern Antiquities Department, you get transported back to the pre-Islamic times in Persia, Levant and the Mesopotamian region.

The department showcasing Islamic Art is the most recent in the Louvre displaying items from three continents and across 13 centuries!

EIFFEL TOWER

Longitude and Latitude:48.8582° N, 2.2945° E

Located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most well known structures in the world.

The Eiffel Tower was originally built as the entrance arch for the World's Fair in 1889.

It is named after Gustave Eiffel, whose company was in charge of the project.

GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

Longitude and Latitude:37.8197° N, 122.4786° W

1. The Golden Gate Bridge was completed on May 27, 1937. Over 200,000 people walked the entire length of the bridge, (1.7 miles!) to celebrate its grand opening.

2. The Golden Gate Bridge was built VERY strong. The bridge was built with millions of tons of concrete, so even strong winds coming from the Pacific Ocean couldn’t make this bridge collapse!

3. The cost for the Golden Gate Bridge was $27 million.

SAGRADA FAMILIA

Longitude and Latitude:41.4036° N, 2.1744° E

1. The conception and design of Sagrada Familia began in 1882. After about two years of work, Antoni Gaudi was hired to finish the project.

2. Gaudi died well before finishing the basilica. He is now buried in a crypt under Sagrada Familia.

3. After Gaudi’s death Domenech Suaranyes took over until the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War when construction was halted.

LONDON EYE

Longitude and Latitude:51.5033° N, 0.1197° W

. The London Eye is not a Ferris wheel. It’s the world’s tallest cantilevered observation wheel

COCA-COLA FACTORY

Longitude and Latitude:33.7628° N, 84.3928° W

3) If you placed all 8-ounce bottles of Coca-Cola ever produced together, end-to-end and made a chain out of it, this chain would reach the moon and back over 1000 times.

THE JELLY BELLY FACTORY

Very Cherry remained the most popular flavor of Jelly Belly beans for two decades until 1998, when Buttered Popcorn moved into first place. In 2003 Very Cherry moved back into top position by a mere 8 million beans.

Blueberry flavor was created for Ronald Reagan's presidential inauguration in 1981 when over three tons of Jelly Belly beans were consumed during the festivities.

ATLANTA AQUARIUM

Longitude and Latitude:33.7625° N, 84.3947° W

It houses more than 100,000 animals, representing 500 species, all of which reside in 10 million US gallons (38,000 m3) of marine and fresh water,

was the world's largest aquarium when it opened in 2005.

After visiting 56 aquariums in 13 countries with his wife Billi, he donated $250 million toward what was to become Georgia Aquarium.[7]

COLOSSEUM

Longitude and Latitude:41.8902° N, 12.4923° E

The Coliseum in Rome has over 80 entrances and can accommodate about 50,000 spectators.

The last gladiatorial fights took place in 435 AD

All Ancient Romans had free entry to the Colosseum for events, and was also fed throughout the show.

LEANING TOWER OF PISA

Longitude and Latitude:43.7231° N, 10.3964° E

In Italian the Leaning Tower of Pisa is Torre pendente di Pisa.

It was built as a freestanding bell tower for the cathedral in Pisa.

On the side where the tower is lower because of the lean it stands at 187.27 feet. On the high side of the tower it stands at 186 feet.

PARTHENON

Longitude and Latitude:37.9715° N, 23.7267° E

The origins of the sacred use of the great limestone rock rising from the Attic plain are unknown. They were forgotten long before the writing of the first recorded histories of Athens.

Neolithic remains discovered on the slopes of the Acropolis indicate a continuous settlement on the hill from at least 2800 BCE, well before the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures that later gave birth to the archaic Greek.

In the Mycenaean period (1600-1100 BCE) the summit was surrounded by a massive fortification wall, which protected the palace-temple of the Mycenaean priest-kings.

GREAT PYRAMIDS

The pyramid is estimated to have around 2,300,000 stone blocks that weigh from 2 to 30 tons each and there are even some blocks that weigh over 50 tons.

The Pyramid of Menkaure, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Great Pyramid of Khufu are precisely aligned with the Constellation of Orion.

The base of the pyramid covers 55,000 m2 (592,000 ft 2) with each side greater than 20,000 m2 (218,000 ft2) in area.

SISTINE CHAPEL

Longitude and Latitude:41.9031° N, 12.4544° E

Some 25,000 people a day, or five million people a year, visit the chapel.

Entry to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel costs €16, an annual revenue for the Vatican of around €80 million or £70 million a year.

Sisto’s chapel had the same dimensions, as described in the Old Testament, as the Temple of Solomon on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.

TREVI FOUNTAIN

Longitude and Latitude:41.9009° N, 12.4832° E

.) The Trevi Fountain is situated at the end of the Aqua Virgo, an aqueduct constructed in 19 BC by Agrippa, the son-in-law of Emperor Augustus.

2.) The Trevi Fountain, or Fontana di Trevi in Italian, is Italy’s largest and most famous Baroque fountain, standing 85 feet high and 65 feet across.

TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS

The Olympic Games were held every four years in honor of Zeus. Zeus was considered to be the ‘Father of gods and men'. He was the king of all the other gods.

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was about 42 feet tall.

The statue was made of a wooden frame and covered in ivory and gold panels.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

Longitude and Latitude:33.8587° S, 151.2140° E

The architect Jorn Utzon was initially rejected by three judges in a 1956 competition to design the Sydney Opera House, but his entry was picked out by the fourth judge, renowned American architect Eero Saarinen, who declared it outstanding. Mr Utzon beat 232 other entrants.

Mr Utzon had never visited the site of the Sydney Opera House before entering the design competition, but used his naval experience to study charts of the harbour
