The client needed a structure to divide the living room from the dining room in their new house.

The house is situated on the La Prairie Riviere in Laval, Quebec. The fast waters of the river are just yards from the bank of windows at the back

of the house.
The sculptured wall needed to house a see-through gas fireplace and on the living room side an entertainment unit that included a large television.
The maritime theme applies to the geography as well as the client’s interests and business.

The structure is a stylized sculpture of a ship. The steel at the bottom suggests a hull, the glass fins on the

side suggest the shape of the boat and on the floor surrounding the structure, the gunnels shape, in glass, is inserted in the oak. The floor insert is under lit with sidewall fiber optic cable.

I chose an Ontario stone that I admire as the main material for the piece, the vein cut limestone with its horizontal lines worked in sympathy with the moving waters of the river. The stone and glass have a metaphysical relationship; the glass also comments on thefluidity of the water and creates an interesting dialogue between both sides of the rooms.

The dark
stained Walnut is a wonderful contrast to the stone.
Natural light adds interesting highlights through the glass inserts in the stone.
