Purpose of this Overview -

This overview is a tool for sharing how to jump start a local Father’s Auxiliary (FA). It is intended to be used as a guideline with recommended ways to get the men active and engaged.

Why is the Father’s Auxiliary Important?

Men whom are active in the lives of their children represent fatherhood at its best. In Jack and Jill, the FA is an ideal way for dads to be engaged with their children.

Through the Fathers’ Auxiliary, the men of Jack and Jill, can support Mothers in their endeavors to educate and teach our children our culture, civic responsibilities and the importance of obtaining an education

Through the Fathers’ Auxiliary, the men of Jack and Jill, can serve as role models for all of our children being involved in their lives as they transform from kids to youth to adults.

Although Jack and Jill is historically a mothers and children organization, the Fathers’ Auxiliary offers the support and encouragement from the men which thereby compliments the mission of Jack and Jill.

The mothers of Jack and Jill develop excellent programming for our children – involvement from the fathers only makes it better (teamwork makes the dream work)!

Fathers’ Auxiliary

Starting in 1986 with the introduction of the Beautillion, Fathers came and wanted to be involved in supporting the mothers with the educating and teaching of our youth.

The Fathers’ Auxiliary is an outgrowth of all the efforts that the fathers have made all over the country.

In 1997 Jack and Jill officially kicked off its Fathers' Auxiliary with the appointment of National Chair Fitzroy Younge.

The role of the Fathers in Jack and Jill was defined as being twofold:

Primarily, to support the Mothers in their endeavors to educate and teach our young kids and teenage youth about our culture, civic responsibilities and the importance of obtaining an education

Secondarily, to serve as role models for our young children by being involved in their lives as they transform from kids to youth to adults.

FATHERS’ AUXILIARY HISTORY

The Fathers’ Auxiliary Mission Statement was composed by the seven original Regional Dads to outline the purpose of the Fathers’ Auxiliary.

Its simplicity is intentional.

MISSION STATEMENT:The role of the Dads at all levels is to help the Mothers make Jack and Jill a family organization. The primary effort is at the local chapter level. Without the Dads participating at the chapter level, the Fathers’ Auxiliary will not be as effective. To get the Fathers involved, it is a necessary for Mothers to encourage the Fathers to participate in planned activities. Without encouragement and cooperation, it will be almost impossible for the Fathers to start an auxiliary.

MISSION STATEMENT

1. The Fathers’ Auxiliary is a support group of active members’ spouses.

2. The purpose of the Fathers’ Auxiliary is to support the local, regional and national programs and activities of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated mothers, teens and children.

3. The Fathers’ Auxiliary is governed by the Bylaws of the local chapter, the regional and the national organization.

4. The local chapter Father Auxiliary chair is appointed and guided by the local chapter President.

5. The Regional Fathers’ Auxiliary chair is appointed by the Regional Director and the National Officer and directed by the Regional Director. The National Corresponding Secretary is the Liaison to the Regional Fathers’ Auxiliary Chairs.

6. The National Fathers’ Auxiliary Chair is the Regional Father of the region hosting the upcoming national convention.

7. Spouses (fathers) are encouraged to participate in the Fathers’ Auxiliary.

FATHERS’ AUXILIARY FACTS

1. Fathers do not hold membership in Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, they do support the mothers and the organization through the Fathers’ Auxiliary Groups.

2. Associate dads can also be members of the Fathers’ Auxiliary (if their wife is an active associate member).

3. At death, fathers are given the “Memorial Service for Departed Father” if their wife is active as a member or an associate. (Memorial Service for Departed Father is documented in the Official Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated Manual).

4. Upon initiation of the wife, some chapters also have a new members initiation ceremony for the father. (New Members Initiation Ceremony for Fathers is documented in the Official Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated Manual).

5. One Jack and Jill father representative is appointed to the Jack and Jill of America Foundation Board of Trustees. He, along with the other board members, attends the following…

• Executive Committee• 2 to 3 times a year• July each even year at the National Convention

• Full Board• April of each year

6. Fathers’ groups cannot have separate checking accounts, bylaws, or officers.

FATHERS’ AUXILIARY FACTS(Continued)

1. Chapter President appoints the local Fathers’ Auxiliary Chair.

2. The chapter approves the appointment by a majority vote of the local chapter membership.

3. Fathers’ Auxiliary Chair surveys the membership for possible auxiliary members.

4. Chapter President should meet in consultation with the Fathers’ Auxiliary Chairperson for initial Auxiliary meeting.

5. Organizational meeting announcement should be sent to all eligible members and their spouses advising of the first meeting of the Auxiliary.

6. Fathers’ Auxiliary workshop should be conducted by the Regional Fathers’ Auxiliary Chair and the local Chapter President.

The following are guidelines that should be followed when organizing a Fathers’ Auxiliary Group in the local chapter:

ORGANIZING THE LOCAL FATHERS’ AUXILIARY

Father’s Chair should become acquainted with the goals and objectives of the regional and national auxiliary as well as the local chapter’s programming agenda.

The Auxiliary should select sub-committee chairs to handle meeting notification correspondence, and social, recreational, cultural, civic, and educational activities.

Father’s Auxiliary should channel through the Chairperson to the President all correspondence and concerns, issues, needs, and program goals to the local, regional and national mother’s organization.

Fathers’ Auxiliary should meet only for the support of goals of the local, regional and national organization.

Local Fathers’ Auxiliary Chair should forward to the local chapter Executive Board the names, addresses, phone numbers of all auxiliary members along with the goals, objectives, and proposed program support.

The following are the formal guidelines that should be followed when organizing a Fathers’ Auxiliary Group in the local chapter:

Has demonstrated his commitment in supporting local chapter events

Starting the Local Fathers Auxiliary (Chair’s responsibility)

FA Chair Organize a meeting with the fathers

Obtain a listing of all families and father’s contact information (cell phone and email)

Send Fathers a meeting announcement w/ an agenda Host meeting and keep minutes

Hold meetings at a member’s home or other place conducive to holding a meeting and with refreshments

Organize an event to welcome the new fathers into local

TAX EXEMPT STATUS

JACK AND JILL OF AMERICA, INCORPORATED

As of October 12, 1964, Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated (Group# 1684) was classified as a tax exempt organization, as described in section 501 (c) (4) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954.

Under this classification Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated is exempt from federal and local income tax. However, chapters must pay local sales tax and they are not eligible for nonprofit postal privileges. Also, under this status, contributions made to Jack and Jill of America, Inc. are not tax deductible.

JACK AND JILL OF AMERICA FOUNDATION

As of January 30, 1968 Jack and Jill of America Foundation (certificate #6862 in the State of Illinois) was classified as a tax exempt corporation, as described in section 501 (c) (3) and 509 (a) (1) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954.

Contributions made are therefore tax deductible.

Code numbers beside each organization indicate the type of organization and limitation on deductibility. Organizations with no code numbers are considered public charity with 50% deductibility limitation, i.e., up to 50% of one’s adjusted gross income could be deducted for charity. Jack and Jill of America Foundation has “no code” classification.

FRAMEWORK OF THE FATHERS’ AUXILIARY

Organized in 1997

The Jack and Jill Fathers’ Auxiliary is now over nine years old and both the Mothers and the Fathers have become more comfortable and understand the benefits with the Fathers being involved in Jack and Jill activities. Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated is moving towards becoming an organization where the entire family can participate. This can only have a positive effect on our children as they observe the Dads supporting the Mothers.

The Fathers’ Auxiliary is continuing to mature. In the summer of 1997, the Charter Regional Representatives met and developed a mission statement. The mission statement laid the foundation for how the Fathers would support the Mothers of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated. The Fathers’ Auxiliary is divided into three levels of support; the chapter, the regional and national levels.

The primary emphasis and support for Jack and Jill is at the chapter level. It is here where most of the activities occur and the “rubber meets the road.” Each Chapter President should select a dad to be a local representative and organize the Fathers into a group or act as a point of contact to disseminate information. The chapter mothers should then outline the support they would like from the Fathers based on the selected activities for the year. Most of the planning for the Father’s involvement should be done at the chapter level because each chapter has different needs. Because of these differences, it would be difficult to establish a national or regional approach that would meet the needs of each chapter. It is up to the Mothers of each chapter to encourage the Dads to get involved and it is up to the Dads to show that they want to be involved.

At the Regional level, the Regional Director selects the Regional Fathers’ Representative. His primary function is to encourage chapter Dads to get involved and assist them in organizing. He would also gather and pass on helpful information from other chapters and regions. During regional activities, the Regional Representative would support the Regional Director and her team. It would be up to the Regional Team to determine what support they need from the Fathers, and it would be up to the Regional Representative to coordinate the Fathers in support of the activities.
