In today’s second reading, Paul

states what seems to us to be obvious-if

Jesus did not rise from the dead, our

faith is in vain. What we need to

remember is that Paul wrote his first

letter to the Corinthians only 20 years

after Jesus’ Ascension. In addition, the

community was composed mostly of

gentile converts who knew little to

nothing about Judaism. While we

take a lot for granted, this message

was completely new to them.

For us, who have 1,980 more years

of experience with our faith than the

Corinthians, Paul’s message is just as

important. We can become

complacent, forgetting the incredible

riches offered to us through Christ’s

resurrection. May we always be

mindful and grateful for the eternal

life made possible for us through

Christ.

En la segunda lectura de hoy, Pablo afirma lo que nos parece obvio: si Jesús no se levantó de entre los muertos, nuestra fe es en vano. Lo que debemos recordar es que Pablo escribió su primera carta a los corintios solo 20 años después de la Ascensión de Jesús. Además, la comunidad estaba formada principalmente por gentiles convertidos que sabían poco o nada sobre el judaísmo. Mientras nosotros aceptamos, este mensaje era completamente nuevo para ellos. Para nosotros, que tenemos 1,980 años más de experiencia con nuestra fe que los corintios, el mensaje de Pablo es igual de importante. Podemos volvernos complacientes, olvidando las increíbles riquezas que se nos ofrecen a través de la resurrección de Cristo. Para que siempre estemos atentos y agradecidos por la vida eterna que es posible para nosotros a través de Cristo.
