3 ASSOCIATE PASTOR’S MESSAGE
his coming Tuesday is February 14th, a date that is known as Valentine’s Day in the United States and other countries. Valentine’s Day as a secular celebration fo-cuses on romantic or sentimental love. In Catholic grade school in California, we would exchange Valentine’s Day cards during class. Around this time of year, we often see advertisements for flowers, chocolate, and jewelry. Valentine’s Day has
gained a particular meaning in popular culture that is only loosely associated with the saint or saints that are the origin of the holiday. I think it will be good to learn about the saint or saints whose name has been adopted for this holiday.
Valentine (Valentinus in Latin) was a popular name at one time. It is derived from valens, a Latin word mean-ing strong or powerful. Historically, there are three saints with the name Valentine identified in early manuscripts linked with February 14th. All three were martyrs. Two seemed to have suffered martyrdom in the late third century: one was the bishop of Interamna (modern day Terni in central Italy) and the other was a priest at Rome. The third St. Valentine was martyred in Africa with some others. Nothing more seems to be known about this third St. Valentine. St. Valentine the priest was beaten and beheaded under the emperor Claudius Caesar in 268. St. Valentine the bishop was martyred in the late third century in relation to a visit to Rome. There isn’t much more that is known for certain about any of the saints bearing the name Valentine.
There are some pious legends told about St. Valentine, one of which may partly explain how the feast day of a martyr came to be associated with romantic love. One pious legend relates that St. Valentine was under the house ar-rest of a Roman judge. While St. Valentine was discussing his faith with the judge, the judge tested St. Valentine by bringing his adopted blind daughter to the saint. St. Valentine laid his hands on the girl and prayed over her; she re-gained her sight. The judge asked St. Valentine what he should do. The saint instructed the judge to destroy the idols around his home, fast for three days, and then be baptized. The judge did this as well as releasing St. Valentine and other Christians from custody. St. Valentine was arrested again for preaching the gospel and brought to the emperor Claudius. St. Valentine refused to renounce his faith and was then beaten and beheaded. Another pious legend presents St. Valentine ministering to Christian couples and witnessing marriages for them. According to this legend, it was for this reason he was beheaded.
The Church presents the saints to us as examples of faith. St. Valentine’s Day can be a day to commemorate love. But, if we are attentive to what is known about the real individuals who bore that name, it is love that is founded on the love of God beyond all other things, even earthly life.
St. Valentinus Pray for us.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd This week in the Atrium, one of the groups pondered the Scripture of the Growing Seed; one of the King-dom of God Parables Mark 4:26-29. • The mystery of the
Kingdom of God is the mystery of life itself.
• There is a movement from small to great through the process of growth and transfor-mation. The Kingdom of God often begins so small that there is no visible source or it is hidden.
• It is only the power of God that brings about this transformation. We cannot do it by our own effort.
The 5 year old group discussed: • A single seed, how to nurture the seed, and what is
needed to make the seed grow; children’s responses: good soil, water, the sun, Jesus, etc.
• When the seed is planted and nurtured, how it grows into a stalk (first the blade, then the ear, then the stalk with many seeds; one seed transforming into many seeds.
• Something that starts so small and grows to some-thing so GREAT!
• What is in the seed that helps is grow? Does the farmer make the seed grow? No, Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
• What is the power within the seed that makes it grow?

(Cfr. Catec. nos. 1114; 1640)
