Reflections of Father Michael Troy October 1, 1917—March 19, 2010

Father Michael Troy. A Spiritans Priest for more than 60 years. A teacher and a chaplain, here at St. Joseph High School, for more than 50 years, had passed away on March 19, 2010. The namesake of our basketball tournament believed in living your faith through the art of sport. Father Troy, of course, played a huge role in all of the 27 tourna-ments he was a part of. In this, the 37th annual basket-ball classic, he will be sadly missed. His legacy will live on in future tournaments and his words will continue to ring throughout the hallways, here at his beloved St. Joseph High School. “The best is never over. Father Michael Troy Tournament On Oct. 2, 1881, a small group of men met in the basement of St. Mary’s Church on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut. Called together by their 29-year-old parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, these men formed a fraternal society that would one day become the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. They sought strength in solidarity, and security through unity of purpose and devotion to a holy cause: they vowed to be defenders of their country, their families and their faith. These men were bound together by the ideal of Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of the Americas, the one whose hand brought Christianity to the New World. Their efforts came to fruition with the incorporation of the Knights of Columbus on March 29, 1882. They were Knights of Columbus.

The Knights of Columbus remains headquartered in New Haven, but is now present with nearly 12,000 councils in the United States, Canada, the Philip-pines, Mexico, and several other countries.

A Message from our Principals

A warm welcome to all the players, coaches, family members and spectators who are participating in this 37th year of the Father Michael Troy Annual Basketball Classic. Father Michael Troy, the tournaments namesake, was a role model for all who had the good fortune to know him, be it as a student, a fellow teacher, a coach or a parent. He was especially known for his positive interactions and influence on our young athletes. Father Michael carried himself with vitality and a positive spirit and was steadfast in his support of athletes and their active participation in all endeavors. We hope over the course of this tournament that you will enjoy the competition, get a taste of the St. Joseph High School hospitality that Father Michael Troy modeled every day and take the time to meet new friends and watch excellent High School Basketball!

An Athlete’s Prayer

I thank you, O Lord, for giving me a body which is specially fit and strong, and for allowing me to use it well. In my training: Help me never to shirk the disci-pline which I know is necessary and beneficial for me. When I compete with others: Help me, win or lose, to compete fairly. When I am fortunate enough to be the victor, keep me from boasting, or gloating; when I lose, or finish something less than 1st. pre-vent me from sulking or making poor excuses….to myself, my teammates and coaches. Above all else, do not allow me to become conceit-ed with this gift of strength and expertise which is in my body; but rather aid me to express my thankfulness for this gift in all areas of my life. Give me Lord the wisdom to understand that my talent as an athlete is something which can and will fade with the passage of time….and then moti-vate me to cherish these days and years as a dis-tinct blessing from you. A Coach’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, be with my young athletes as they test their physical skills. Let them play well, but fairly. Let competition make them strong, but never hos-tile. Grant them the strength to best their opponent, and lead them to always help the opponent up. Grant them moments to rejoice, but not in the ad-versity of others. Help them stay safe from injury, both physical and emotional. Help them to learn something that matters once the game is over. Help them remember that sports are just games. If they know victory, allow them to be happy. If they are denied, keep them from envy. If through athletics, they set an example, let it be a good one. In the name of Your Son, Jesus. Athlete’s Credo God, Our Father, Creator and Referee of the greatest game of all, the game of Life. I enjoy all kinds of sports where athletes of equal skill and determination are pitted against one another, be it on a football field, a hockey rink, a basketball court or a down hill ski slope even a little game of shinny! I know that sports is one of your greatest gifts to us human be-ings and I thank You that in a world of frequent strife and vio-lence, people at play is always a world at peace. Help me and my peers to use our years in sports intelligently. Help me and them to see that along with the passing excitement of the present contest, its ecstasy of winning or losing, its joy or pain today can be a treasured memory for a life time. Help me to see this higher value of sport for sport’s sake (not for money) is the fullest development of our God given natural gifts of mind and body skills through discipline, mastery and practice. Whether I participate in sports today as a player, coach, referee, fan or organizer or even only watch a game on T.V. help me use sports not as an escape from reality and the real world but as a great means to a higher, more meaningful life style, the fullest development of my total self in the greatest game of all, the Game of Life, where the supreme award and prize is always the glory of God in men and women fully alive. The History of the Father Michael Troy

Annual Basketball Classic

This tournament which began in 1984, is named for a friend, teacher, coach, and padre of innumer-able SAINTS. He came to St. Joseph High School in 1969. Born in Ireland and reborn a Canadian in 1958, he came to Toronto to found the Neil McNeil High School. Father Troy held degrees , including a Ph.D., from three universities (Dublin, Fribourg and Toronto). Always interested in sports, Father Troy held an impressive record at St. Joseph as Senior Soccer Coach, having missed only two city finals in the 14 years that he coached. Father Troy, 6’1” and a National High School High Jump Champion, proved useful around the hoop in his basketball days. He also played in the Na-tional Football League (Ireland) and the European University Soccer Conference. In Canada, he founded the Neil McNeil Maroons Junior A Hockey Club (Toronto) and Knights of Columbus Soccer Club (Edmonton). Father Michael Troy considered the association of his name with this tournament one of the greatest honors in his lifetime of sport.
