    DIFFERENTLEVELSOFFASTING

    ImamAbuHamidAlGhazalimentions inhis IhyaUlumuddin that fastinghasmany

    levels:9

It should be known that there are three grades of fasting: ordinary, special and

    extraspecial.

    OrdinaryFastingmeansabstainingfromfood,drinkandsexualsatisfaction.

    SpecialFastingmeanskeepingoneseyes,ears,tongue,handsandfeetandallother

    organs,freefromsin.

Extraspecial Fasting means fasting of the heart from unworthy concerns and

    worldlythoughts,intotaldisregardineverythingbutAllah,GreatandGloriousisHe.

This kind of fast is broken by thinking of anything other than Allah, Great and

    LAYLATULQADR

    In themonthofRamadan, certainnightshavegreater significanceandholdmore

barakah (blessings) than others. One such night is Laylatul Qadr (The Night of

    Power).

    Allah,

    the

    Exalted,

    has

    described

thatMuslimsmay seek it and their keenness forworshipmay grow and all their

nights during the concluding part of themonth be spent in prayer and seeking

    forgiveness.28

However, many scholars are of theopinion that themost likely date for Laylatul

    Qadris

    the

    night

    of

    the

    twenty

    seventh

    of

    Ramadan.

    Ibn

    twentyseventh[night].(AbuDawudandAhmad)

Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleasedwith him, was among those who were of the

    opinionthatLaylatulQadrfallsonthetwentyseventhnightofRamadan.

Although there isamultitudeofevidence tosubstantiate thisopinion, there isno

absolute surety that LaylatulQadr falls on the twenty seventh night.Hence, it is

advisable to seek this blessed night in the odd nights of the last ten days of

    Ramadan.
