Modbury Hospital is an acute care teaching hospital that provides inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services to a population of nearly 200,000 people living primarily in Adelaide’s north-eastern suburbs. Modbury Hospital opened in 1973, with the Education Centre built in 1979, followed by the Woodleigh House mental health unit in 1980. In 1995, Modbury Hospital management was transferred from the public sector to the private organisation Healthscope, and was later transferred back to public sector management on 1 July 2007. Committed to working in collaboration and partnership, Modbury Hospital is affiliated with the University of Adelaide and enjoys a close relationship with the general practitioners in its catchment area. Developments at Modbury Hospital include: A new $1.3 million Surgicentre facility, consisting of a procedure room, decontamination area, storage area, upgrade and extension to existing day stay recovery area. A new $46 million redevelopment project is being planned to expand and renovate the existing Emergency Department and build a new 36 single-room rehabilitation ward with associated rehabilitation facilities. Building work is expected to begin on this project in late 2011.

Did you know?The hospital’s volunteer service works in partnership with hospital staff and departments for the benefit of both parties and the wider hospital community. More than 100 volunteers provide comfort, support, companionship and assistance to both community-based and hospital patients and their families.

Woodleigh House is a 20-bed, acute-care mental health facility for adults. Although situated on the hospital grounds, the unit is a separate entity operated by the Mental Health Directorate.

The GP Plus Super Clinic Modbury is located a short walk from Modbury Hospital. The Super Clinic operates from two sites, 77 Smart Road Modbury and Gilles Crescent, Hillcrest. The Smart Road site will include a private general practice, private allied health and dental services as well as medical education and teaching facilities. The Gilles Crescent site will support chronic disease management and deliver health services for children and families, with a special focus on the local Aboriginal, refugee and socially disadvantaged communities. The Smart Road site Stage 1 is open with GP and some health prevention services. Construction has commenced on Stage 2 and the Gilles Crescent site. Both sites are expected to be providing full services by late 2011.
