WHERE TO EAT

It’s hard to find a place to eat which satisfies the whole family. 0 is not an easy thing to find when it comes to PERFECTrestaurants. I remember my parents taking me as a child to the most1 restaurant they could find. They didn’t think it was EXPENSEworth spending a lot of money on someone who had no table manners! Today the choice of restaurants is so great, however, that total 2 is rare. It’s difficult to explain exactly what I’m looking DISAPPOINTfor in a restaurant. It’s certainly not 3 surroundings, LUXURYalthough I must admit that I’m usually 4 to go into a WILLINGplace which looks dirty or dingy. In these days of fast food, it takes a lot of5 to persuade my own children that a bowl of salad is DETERMINEevery bit as tasty as a burger and chips! Some parents I know 6 taking their children to fast food restaurants, but I’ve LIKEalways made an effort to go and see just what’s available in those places. I can’t honestly say that some of the experiences were so good that they were7 , but at least I feel I have given the fast food chains a try. FORGETI would like to be able to say that we go out to dinner once a week.8 , this is not the case. We either seem to be too busy, or FORTUNATEdecide that it’s more 9 to have a family meal at home, SATISFYwhich is probably for the best! But one thing is certain, I am still as10 about food as I ever was, and intend to remain so! ENTHUSIASM

We had had a family day out in the mountains. My brother,5 was about ten years old at the time, and I enjoyed going toa lake where you could hire a boat and row out across the water.6 had once been a village in the valley, but the valley hadbeen flooded in order 7 create a reservoir for a city manymiles away. When the water was clear, you could still make out the top of thechurch spire and the walls of houses. 8 we were returninghome that night, my father discovered that he had lost his treasured fountainpen. About two weeks later, he announced that in spite 9 thegloomy weather, we were going back to the lake for the day. We were surprised, but said nothing. We set 10 about nine in the morning, andas 11 as we arrived at the lake, we headed12 the spot where we had had our picnic on the previousoccasion. As we were deciding whether to hire a boat for the afternoon or13 , my father gave a shout. There, lying on the ground, wasa pen. There was 14 doubt at all in my mind that15 was the pen he had lost two weeks beforehand.

GHOST STORY

One of my favourite stories is called The 6.15 from Paddington Station. It’s about a man called Gregory, who tried 0 to make a SUCCESSliving as an artist. When he finally realised that he was never going to make ends meet, he decided to find a job which seemed less 1 , CHALLENGEand he became a ticket inspector on commuter trains. One night he boarded a rather empty train and noticed an oddly dressed couple sitting in one of the carriages. It was difficult to work out what the 2 between RELATIONthe couple might be – they could have been mother and son. They were both reading newspapers written in a strange language 3 to RECOGNISEGregory. When he asked them if they were in 4 of a valid POSSESSticket, he received no reply. Gregory became very 5 . He couldn’t understand why they paid no attention to him. He knew that he was a very 6 man, and his friends often commented on his outgoing 7 . Perhaps there was something about him they had taken a dislike to? Suddenly and 8 , the train screeched to a halt. A glance out of the window revealed that they were in the middle of nowhere. Something was 9 wrong. Gregory glanced quickly towards the odd couple but they were no longer sitting in their seats. All he could see was their newspapers, dated, much to Gregory’s10 , a hundred years ago to the very day!

ADVENTURE IN PERU

0 I’ve just been to see a film is called Touching the Void. It’s00 about two climbers who decided to go climbing in the mountains1 in Peru. It took them two days to reach the mountain they2 had been decided to climb because it was in such a remote place.3 They left a companion and the most of their supplies at base camp,4 optimistically thinking about they would be back in a couple of5 days. After a difficult climb, they reached at the top of6 the mountain. It was then that everything started to go wrong.7 Because of one climber had broken his leg, he had to be8 lowered down the mountain by means of a rope. His leg it was so9 much painful that he couldn’t stand on it. After a very exciting bit

10 of the film, which I won’t describe, he found by himself alone11 at the bottom of a crevasse. He managed to climb out and eventually12 crawl to safety. The cold was so intense that he got frostbite in his hands,13 but he was carried on, dragging himself down a glacier and across rocks.14 When he arrived at the base camp, his friends were too amazed to see him.15 They couldn’t believe that in despite his broken leg, he had managed to

reach the camp.

SHOP TILL YOU DROP!

Attitudes 0 shopping have changed dramatically over the last decade or so.There was a time when shopping was a means to an end, not an occupation in its ownright. Some people argue that we have become a society of big-time 1 , andthat nothing but spending money makes us happy. On the other 2 , anyonewho has worked hard to 3 money surely has the right to spend it4 whatever they wish. Provided that we are prepared to 5 enough ofour money for a rainy day, there seems little wrong with using the rest to6 for things that give us pleasure. For some people, however, spending moneyhas become a serious business. It will take more than a few home 7 to persuadethem that they should not do this. The delights of shopping are all too obvious. Attractivedisplays of food on supermarket 8 , and clothes which look fantastic on shopwindow models, tempt 9 to part with their money, even if they do not actuallyneed the 10 they are buying. The real question is: would we all be happier if wewere 11 ? The answer is probably that we can be just as happy with money aswe can without it. However, now that many companies are branching out 12 theteenage market, and selling to teenagers has 13 into a huge industry, we need tobe aware of the kind of pressures being 14 on parents and children alike.Perhaps what we should do is make an effort to return to the things that really matter in lifeand 15 what we have worked so hard to obtain with others less fortunate thanourselves.

SPONSORED WALK

Have you ever 0 on a sponsored walk? I went on1 when I was about eleven years old. Our teacher came up2 the idea. We would donate any money we raised to a localcharity and have a day out at the same time. I didn’t really understand what3 involved in a sponsored walk, but that didn’t make4 difference to me. It just seemed an exciting thing to do, andwe set 5 on our journey with enthusiasm. But the walkturned out to be even 6 exciting than I had expected.7 I didn’t realise was that it consisted of walking two miles toa small island 8 only means of access was across a causeway. The island, 9 is situated off the north-east coast of Britain, is aplace of outstanding natural beauty, but very remote. The first problem wecame up 10 was the sand. We had to put11 with it blowing in our faces and on our legs as westruggled across the causeway. Added to that, we knew that12 we did not return to the mainland in time, we would becut 13 by the incoming tide, and would have to spend thenight there! Well, we made it, and even managed to have a picnic there before itwas time to make our way back. You can imagine our relief when we arrived onthe mainland exhausted, but home 14 dry. I must admit that Ihaven’t done a sponsored walk 15 I went to the island. Butwho knows? One day I might do one again.

LUCKY ESCAPE

0 Last night the emergency services were called up out to investigate00 an explosion in a first-floor flat just off the High Road. Neighbours1 reported seeing a column of smoke coming from what was seemed to2 be a kitchen window. The first of thing they did was phone for3 help. For the almost ten minutes, fire-fighters attempted to gain4 entrance, but the door which was locked from inside. Eventually, they5 managed to break it down. They could hardly believe what had been6 happened inside. There, in the kitchen, was an old lady holding a7 gigantic water pistol. Apparently her iron had being caused8 a small fire. She realised that there was no fire extinguisher in the flat,9 but remembered a toy her grandson had left in the bathroom. She

10 had quickly filled the toy gun with water by which she used to put out11 the fire. She had managed to soak herself as too but was remarkably12 cheerful after her ordeal. She even made the would-be rescuers a cup of13 a tea. The fire-fighters left, but returned an hour or so later, bringing14 something for the old lady. It was a brand new fire extinguisher. She was pleased15 with the present but rather sadly commented on that it was a long time since

FASHION SHOW

While I was at art college, one of our projects was to organise a fashionshow. It was to be a 0 for students from differentdepartments, with prizes awarded for the most 1 designs. Apart from designing andmaking the clothes ourselves, there were 7 rehearsalswith friends we had persuaded to act as models. Some of them looked so8 in the outfits we had put together that we despairedof being taken seriously, let alone being awarded a prize. But luckily allour efforts proved 9 . Much to our surprise, weactually managed to win second prize. We couldn’t quite believe that wehad pulled it off. The best part of all, however, was 10 gazing at our designs in print. It was indeed one of the proudest momentsof my life!

AFFORDABLE CULTURE

0 Going to the theatre can be incredibly expensive, but, if you00 would have the time, there are some amazing bargains to be had.1 Many people do not know that reduced for rates are available 2 not only for students but also groups of more than ten adults. 3 For this reason, they prefer to the cinema, wrongly believing it4 to be much cheaper there. Whenever the subject is brought5 on up in conversation, it becomes increasingly obvious that not6 enough of people realise that cut price culture does exist if you7 know where to find it. For the example, teachers taking groups8 of students can obtain huge discounts if they wish enquire at the9 box office. It is true that the seats they find themselves in them

10 may be towards the back. However, although they may not11 like the look around of them at first, it is almost always possible to12 see yourselves and hear well enough to enjoy the show. It certainly13 isn’t necessary to be cut back on your spending for a theatre trip14 to be enjoyable. So next time you are in town, take a little extra time 15 to find the best deal that you can.

HOLIDAY CANCELLATION

There is nothing worse 0 having a holiday cancelled.Despite the fact that the government has brought 1 newlegislation to protect holiday-makers financially, it’s the disappointment whichis hard to bear. In most cases, some form of compensation2 offered, but often the alternatives are nowhere near3 exciting as the original destination. On second thoughts, perhaps 4 is something which is 5 littleworse than a cancelled holiday, and 6 is being stranded atyour holiday destination when a company goes bankrupt. In circumstanceslike these, many people wish they 7 never gone on holidayat all, and may think twice about going again. ‘If we’d known that this wasgoing to happen, we 8 never have considered spending somuch money on a holiday.’ ‘9 only we’d booked withsomeone else!’ they grumble to their friends when they get back home. Theirfriends try to change 10 subject, but quickly realise thatthe disappointed holiday makers are determined to have their say. It seemsuseless to point out that the main reason 11 having aholiday is to return home relaxed and stress-free. If the experience turns outto be even more stressful than normal everyday life, putting pressure12 the holiday-maker, then surely it is13 something to be repeated. Perhaps the best advice forthose 14 feel that they are not cut 15 forstressful holiday experiences is simply to stay at home!
