YVES SAINT LAURENT... TODAY

During the 1998 - 1999 seasons, Alber Elbaz designed three ready-to-wear collections. In 1999, the Gucci Group purchased the YSL brand, fired Elbaz and asked Tom Ford to design the ready-to-wear collection while Saint-Laurent continued to design the haute couture collection. Unfortunately, due to years of poor health caused by drug abuse, depression and alcoholism; Saint-Laurent retired the couture house of YSL in 2002, announcing that no one will ever design a couture piece under the house after him. After Ford's departure in 2004, Stefano Pilati took direction of the ready-to-wear line; his style more French, more comparable to that of Saint-Laurent's than the sexy image that Tom Ford portrayed. After eight years of direction, Stefano Pilati was dismissed from his position at the house in February of 2012 and it was announced that Hedi Slimane would act as the new creative head. It was announced in June 2012, that under the new directorship of Slimane, the Yves Saint Laurent ready-to-wear collection will be re-branded as Saint Laurent Paris (SLP.)

BIOGRAPHY: ALBER ELBAZ

Alber Elbaz is a Moroccan-born Israeli fashion designer. He studied at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan. In 1985, Elbaz moved to New York City, spent two years working for a manufacturer then working for Geoffrey Beene for seven years. In 1997, he left Beene and was hired by the firm of Guy Laroche where he worked for a year. In 1998, he began designing ready-to-wear women's clothing for Yves Saint Laurent because Saint-Laurent withdrew from designing the Rive Gauche label. In 1999, the Gucci Group purchased the YSL brand; fired Elbaz and Tom Ford stepped in as the creative designer at the prêt-à-porter label. He then began

working for Krizia in Italy and designed for the brand until October 2001 where Elbaz was appointed as the artistic director of Lanvin in Paris. He has since become "every woman's darling" with a CDFA award and Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur under his belt and was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2007.

BIOGRAPHY: TOM FORD

Tom ford is an American fashion designer and film director. He studied at Parsons The New School for Design and graduated with a degree in architecture. Before his final year in at Parsons, Ford spent a year and a half in Paris as an intern in Chloe's press office. Starting his career, he concealed that he graduated in architecture and ended up getting a job with American designer Cathy Hardwick. In 1988, Ford moved to Perry Ellis where he worked for two years

and was then given an opportunity to enter European fashion as Gucci's chief women's ready-to-wear designer in 1990. In 1994, he was promoted to creative director. He gained international time for his time spent with Gucci and the turnaround he gave the company from being almost bankrupt to the time that he left the brand in 1999 being valued at $4.3 billion. When the Gucci Group acquired the YSL Rive Gauche brand in 2000, Ford dismissed Alber Elbaz from the creative director position and became the creative director of the prêt-à-porter label. In 2004, Ford parted ways with the Gucci Group because he failed to agree with the PPR bosses over artistic control of the Group. Sine his departure, Ford has acted as the creative director of his signature label, Tom Ford. His achievements also include numerous awards; including various CFDA awards and directing the Oscar nominated film, A Single Man.

BIOGRAPHY: STEFANO PILATI

Stefano Pilati is an Italian Fashion designer. Instead of becoming a land surveyor, Pilati dropped his course to take on an internship with Nino Cerruti at age 17. His first job in fashion was at a velvet manufacturer and within months of working there, he was designing the company's entire collections and presenting them to the European market. In 1993, he was hired by Giorgio Armani as a menswear design assistant but left after two years to become the head of research and development at Prada. He then moved to Miu Miu in 1998 where he was promoted to assisted designer and worked on both the menswear and womenʼs wear collections. Yves Saint Laurent named him design director in 2000 and Pilati worked under Tom Ford for four years before being appointed creative director following Ford's departure in 2004. Like Saint-Laurent and the 'le smoking' look, Pilati has contributed other trademarks for YSL, most popular the Muse bag that he designed in 2005. Pilati's designs are time and again questioned, and then latterly copied, proving his credentials as an incredibly talented and innovative designer working today. On February 27th, 2012 Pilati announced that he was stepping down from his role as Yves Saint Laurent's creative director.
