LETTER FROM THE CHIEF

Dear Collectors,

Welcome to the last edition of Fascination for 2017. The year has certainly gone by very fast and we have accomplished a lot with the issuance of so many great United Nations stamps.

I just returned from the China International Collection Expo in Nanjing, China. It was nice to see and meet many of UNPA’s collectors there. It was a very successful event.

For the last stamp issue of the year, UNPA will release six stamps for World Food Day. This special day which is celebrated on 16 October of each year, demonstrates the United Nations commitment in reaching SDG Goal #2 – which is to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030. These stamps were illustrated by Helen Dardik and the designs represent the various food groups.

UNPA is also issuing some very exciting special event sheets. For the UN Expo’17 to be held in Bellefonte, PA from 27-28 October, UNPA is issuing a 3-stamp mini-sheet to commemorate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The sheet features an image of Eleanor Roosevelt holding one of the original declarations. The stamps in the denominations of $1.15, CHF 2,00 and € 1,70 are printed in a micro-printing technique with each stamp containing the entire text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in English, French, and German. This sheet is creating a lot of interest among collectors, as this may be the most number of words ever printed on a single stamp.

For the CNEP Salon d’automme Paris, UNPA will also issue a special event 3-stamp mini-sheet. The sheet features hexachrome andink and metallic foil.

WORLD FOOD DAY

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the UN celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Organization in 1945. Events in over 150 countries are held annually to promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all. The slogan for World Food Day 2017 is “Change the future of migration. Invest in food security and rural development”.

World Food Day is a chance to show our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 – to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030. It’s also a day for us to celebrate the progress we have already made towards reaching #ZeroHunger.

Why should we care about World Food Day and #ZeroHunger? The right to food is a basic human right. Investing in sustainable food systems and rural development means addressing some of the major global challenges — from feeding the world’s growing population to protecting the global climate, and tackling some of the root causes of migration and displacement. Achieving the 17 SDGs cannot happen without ending hunger, and without having sustainable and resilient, climate-compatible agriculture and food systems that deliver for the people and the planet.

THE ARTISTHelen Dardik is a professional illustrator and a surface pattern designer based in Canada. Vibrant, folksy, playful toomuchery is a perfect way to describe her style. Born by the Black Sea, Helen lived in Siberia for a time and then moved to Israel, where she studied art and design. In the early nineties, she relocated to Canada, where she got a graphic design degree and found work as a designer and illustrator. Helen mainly works in vector using the magic of imagination combined with the magic of Adobe illustrator... but, often, watercolor, oil, gouache, embroidery and vinyl find their way into her repertoire. Finding inspiration in her childhood, her 3 little girls, nature, vintage books and midcentury design, Helen is determined to make her life into the most creative experience.

UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS UN EXPO ‘17

On 27 October 2017, UNPA will issue a new special event three-stamp mini-sheet to commemorate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The stamp sheet features an iconic picture of Eleanor Roosevelt holding one of the original versions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The stamps in the denominations of $1.15, CHF 2,00 and € 1,70 each contain the entire text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its pre-amble in the three languages of English, French and German. The stamps were printed in offset with a micro-printing technique and silver-foil by Joh. Enschedé Stamps Security Printers B.V. (Netherlands). The sheet was designed by Rorie Katz (United Nations).

The image in the selvage reproduces a photo taken 1 November,1949 during Roosevelt’s visit to the UN headquarters, which at the time was in the former Sperry Gyroscope factory in Lake Success (Long Island), New York.

The stamps will be released at the UNExpo’17 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania on 27-28 October 2017. A special first day ceremony is set for 1 p.m. on 27 October.

The stamps are of great interest to collectors as this may be the most number of words ever printed on a stamp.

On 9 November 2017, UNPA will issue a new special event three-stamp mini-sheet to commemorate the CNEP – Salon d’automme Paris stamp show. The stamps in the denominations of $1.15, CHF 2,00 and € 1,70 feature metallic iand hexachrome ink. The sheet was designed by Sergio Baradat (United Nations). The stamps were printed by Joh. Enschedé Stamps Security Printers B.V. (Netherlands).

Note: Customers with standing order requirements for special event mini-sheets will automatically receive these items through their accounts. All other customers can purchase these special event sheets in either mint or cancelled condition by using the order form attached to this Fascination.

2017 ANNUAL COLLECTION FOLDERS

The New York, Geneva and Vienna annual collection folders of single mint stamps issued in 2017 will be released on 16 October 2017. The folders are printed in full colour, and they provide information about each issue in English, French and German. The mint stamps are not affixed inside the albums, as mounts are provided for this purpose.

It should be noted that the 2017 Flag Series and 2017 Endangered Species series WILL NOT be included in the individual New York, Geneva or Vienna annual collection folders. They are contained in their own separate folder.

The last day of sale of the 2015 New York, Geneva and Vienna annual collection folders will be 16 October 2017.

UNPA COMMEMORATES BRASÍLIA 2017 STAMP EXHIBITION WITH SPECIAL OVERPRINTED STAMP SHEET

On 24 October 2017, UNPA will issue a special overprinted stamp sheet to commemorate its participation at the Brasília 2017 stamp show from 24-27 October 2017. The sheet featured is the € 0,68 Samba from the 2017 UNPA International Dance Series. The overprint consists of the Brasília 2017 show logo and the dates of the show.

Although we do not consider this to be a new issue, we understand some customers would like to have it as part of their collection. As a result, we are making it available as a miscellaneous item for those collectors who are interested.

This special stamp sheet can be purchased by using the order form attached to this Fascination. Customers with standing order requirements for Vienna miscellaneous items (724) will automatically receive this sheet through their accounts.
